Rob Oxford: Rest in Peace, Mr. Allen

Tuesday, October 16, 2018

Paul G. Allen
Photo from Vulcan Inc
Sitting in my office Monday afternoon, my eldest son came in and shared what I had thought initially to be a hoax. He said the NFL Network was reporting that Seahawks owner Paul Allen had died.

I immediately began searching the internet and all I could find were links to a supposed celebrity death hoax that had been circulating earlier in the month. How someone can find joy in creating viruses and spreading such rumors is beyond me and perhaps an article for a different day.

It was no secret that Mr. Allen had been dealing with complications from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but because of his desire for privacy, I don't think the media was even aware of the severity of his illness. Sadly, what I had hoped would indeed be a hoax was soon confirmed by several local news affiliates and Paul's sister Jody.

Paul Allen's story is one Seahawk fans know all too well. Not only as co-founder of Microsoft, owner of the Portland Trailblazers and co-owner of the Seattle Sounders, but in 1996 when the most hated man in Seattle (before Clay Bennett stole our Sonics) Ken Behring threatened to move our beloved Seahawks to Southern California, Paul Allen stepped in and offered to purchase the team.

As anyone living in the area at the time can attest, there were plenty of stipulations that needed to be met before a deal could get done. For starters, Mr. Allen wanted an open-air stadium. That meant the Kingdome had to be imploded and a new stadium built.

After much discussion and not all of it favorable, the proposed $430 million project would be put to a statewide vote. Mr. Allen would be responsible for $130 million dollars of the overall tab, while the public via various taxes and lottery sales would have to pony up the remaining $300 million. For football fans, losing the Seahawks was not an option. However, not everyone in the state was a football fan. At least not yet.

When it was all over, the measure for a new stadium and exhibition hall narrowly passed by 51 percent. Paul Allen had saved our Hawks!

Under his ownership, the Seahawks made eight playoff appearances, have won 52 percent of their games overall and have played in 3 Super Bowls. The parade downtown to celebrate winning Super Bowl XLVIII 43 - 8 over longtime AFC division rival Denver is a day very few residents will soon forget.

As Co-founder of Microsoft, Chairman and Founder of Vulcan Inc., owner of the Seahawks, Sounders and Trailblazers, Founder of the Allen Institute for Brain Science, Allen Institute for Cell Science, Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence and his various philanthropic endeavors, as well as establishing KEXP Radio, MoPop (formerly EMP) and the Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Museum at Paine Field, Mr. Allen will long be remembered as a favorite son of Seattle.

For undeniably selfish reasons however, I will admire him most for providing me with the opportunity to spend quality time with my wife and sons on Sunday afternoons.

From a forever grateful 12, may you rest in peace Mr. Allen.

Thank you,
Rob Oxford

Longtime Shoreline resident and Paramount School Park walker dies at 101

Friday, August 24, 2018

Sara Erickson 1916-2018
100th birthday
Sara Erickson passed away at her home in Shoreline after a short illness, at the age of 101. Sara was well known at the Paramount School Park where she walked three miles a day in all weather, except snow and ice.

Sara was born in 1916 on the prairie of Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. She was the second child born to Scottish parents, Donald and Katherine Grant MacDonald. They lived on the family homestead for a couple of years until sister Ellen was about 2 years old. Life on the prairie was cold and difficult.

In 1917, the family moved to Bellingham, Washington, where Sara’s mother had been a school teacher. They purchased a small farm and settled in Laurel, just halfway between Bellingham and
Lynden. Their life revolved around family, neighbors, friends and work on the farm. Sara often commented that their life was similar to the popular TV show “The Waltons”.

Sara Erickson and daughter Rita Clark
at a garden tour in 2017
Sara and “John Boy” graduated from High School in 1934. Both Sara and her sister Ellen graduated from the Bellingham Normal School with Teaching certificates. After several years of teaching, both Ellen and Sara married and had two children each.

In 1958, Sara’s husband, Ralph Hackett, was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was sent to the Firland Sanatorium in Shoreline. After three years as a patient, Ralph was discharged and offered a full-time job, in the machine shop at Firlands, where they manufactured parts for Boeing.

Sara obtained a job at the University of Washington Library system’s Catalog Division where she worked until retirement in 1982. Ralph passed away in 1973 after complications from his tuberculosis.

Upon retirement, Sara enjoyed traveling, gardening, family and friends. She especially enjoyed ballroom dancing at all of the local Senior Centers. She met her second husband, Carl Erickson, at the Senior Center dances. They married in 1997 when she was 80 and he was 85. He passed away in 2002.

Sara Erickson walking in Paramount School Park
Sara was always active and had walked her dog on the sidewalks of Shoreline, but when the Paramount School Park opened she felt it was a safer and easier place to walk.

She became a fixture and was easily recognized by her Tilley hat. As Sara aged and began to slow her walking, she could be found resting on a bench and visiting with the many friends that she made through the years.

If she had two words of advice to everyone, it would be to “Keep walking”.  It’s good for body and soul.

Tom Hamilton
Hamilton, Thomas Blakely
Shoreline, WA

Thomas Blakely Hamilton, age 81, passed away at his home in Shoreline, surrounded by his wife and children, on Tuesday, July 10, 2018. He was born on June 7, 1937 in Seattle, Washington to Thomas Blakeley and Winifred Jean (Beeson) Hamilton.

Tom spent most of his childhood in Seattle, attending Christ the King, Seattle Preparatory, and graduating from Lincoln High. He went on to attend college at Seattle University where he received his bachelor's in Psychology in 1961, and then to the University of Portland where he received his master's in Psychology in 1964. He was an Assistant Professor at Seattle University for 13 years, where he taught a variety of classes including psychology, statistics, and experimental design.

Tom moved to Shoreline in 1975 and married Kathleen Diane Barrett in 1976. Together they raised their children and survived many road trips, camping across the Western US and visiting National Parks.

He loved to travel with his wife Kathi and they went on countless cruises and adventures. Some favorite ones included the 2006 World Cup in Germany, cruising to Australia in 2011, riding elephants in Thailand in 2017, and numerous Disney and Harry Potter theme trips with his children and grandchildren.

Tom and Kathi shared a passion for the arts with their season tickets to the 5th Avenue and ACT theaters. They supported local sports as season ticket holders for both the Seattle Mariners and the Seattle Sounders. Tom loved reading and going to movies, especially science fiction, and enjoyed genealogy and researching family history. He loved to watch his grandchildren's sporting, theater and musical events and was always up for trying out the latest brewpub with friends and family, where you could find his signature Edgar Martinez Mariners logo'd PT Cruiser parked outside.

Tom and Kathi raised their family at Richmond Beach Congregational Church (RBCC) where Tom fulfilled many roles as an officer and on committees, participated in men's groups, and managed the church sound system where he trained younger generations on the sound board, including two of his grandchildren.

Despite his own musical challenges, he loved music. He was in many church plays and musicals as an original member of the RBCC Players, starting with a dramatic stage death as the captain in the Poor of New York. He enjoyed playing the grandfather in You Can’t Take It with You and sang courageously as Mr. Macy in Miracle at Macy’s. He also attempted piano lessons and had a brief stint in the church hand bell choir. As a founding member of PFJ (Pints for Jesus), he sampled many local pints north of the Ship Canal.

In addition to his work at a Seattle University, his varied career included brief stints as a cab driver, bartender, real estate agent, and home computer salesman for Texas Instruments until he found his calling in technical publications for the Boeing Company, from where he retired at age 60.

Throughout his life, Tom gave back to his community in many ways, including volunteering as a court appointed special advocate. Post retirement he also served as both Treasurer and President for the Seattle Genealogical Society, and as a volunteer tour guide at the Museum of Pop Culture.

Fishing vessel named in honor of Shorecrest graduate Spencer Brewer

Wednesday, May 9, 2018

T/V Spencer Brewer Naknek, AK

From Laura T. Brewer

I want to share an update with you. My son, Spencer Brewer (Shorecrest High School Class of 2014), lost his life on June 29, 2016 doing a job he loved. He loved being at sea. He told me once that "getting underway made his heart soar".

On March 31, 2018, my son Zach and I had the privilege to be in Homer, AK to help christen the T/V Spencer Brewer, home port of Naknek, Alaska, formerly the Cross Point home port of Dillingham, Alaska.

This was Spencer’s favorite boat to work on. With a crew of eight, this vessel transports all of the frozen and canned salmon from the shallow ports of Bristol Bay to the Naknek City dock where it then gets loaded onto mainline barges to Seattle.

Spencer made a lasting impression on everyone he worked with while in Alaska.

In Spencer's 20 years with us, he lived life to its fullest. He always wanted to know about your day, gave hugs freely and was always ready to lend a hand. He is greatly missed.

We are thankful for all the work it took to make this happen and our hearts are full to know the "SPENCER BREWER" will always be at sea.

Spencer Vaugh Brewer
5-29-1996 ~ 6-29-2016

May the seas come up to meet you,
And the wind always be at your back.

At times, he was simultaneously working with private programs at Studio East Performing Arts, Dandylyon Drama, and Youth Theatre Northwest. Known as “Dan the Man” by his casts and students, he was patient, kind, respectful and unfailing in his belief in them.

Yet, when asked for what he wanted to be remembered, his response was “that I was a good grandfather”.

George Robert Webster
1937-2018
George Robert Webster, born January 5, 1937, passed away peacefully at his home in Shoreline on April 2, 2018, after a courageous struggle against pancreatic cancer.

George was born at Providence Hospital in Everett, Washington on January 5, 1937. He grew up in Snohomish, WA, son of Clyde Robert Webster and Letha Hope (Eckert) Webster. George graduated from Snohomish High School and went on to the University of Washington, graduating in 1960 with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering.

George met his wife of 57 years, Velma M. (Romine) Webster on a blind date during his senior year of college and they married at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Snohomish, WA on February 4, 1961.

After college, George worked for Scott Paper Mill in Everett, WA where he developed several environmental patents. George was next employed by the Public Health Service who sent him back to the University of Washington to get his Masters degree in Sanitary Engineering. Upon completing his masters’ studies, George loaded his young family into his 1953 Ford and drove to Washington DC taking a job with the EPA.

His experiences there included two years as Technical Representative to OECD in Paris, France, while working ten years as a GS-15 Senior Environmental Engineer.

Honors included being a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers with expertise in Water and Wastewater. After a brief employment with Marsh McLennan in Bloomfield, Michigan, George and his family were able to move back to “God’s country”, the Pacific Northwest, where he started his first company, Ekistics, and later Webster’s Inc., specializing in asbestos inspections and abatement management for WSU, UW and ten local school districts, and leaking underground storage tank clean-up.

George was a licensed Professional Engineer with over 45 years experience and loved every minute of it. He continued as a consultant to local environmental firms up until the time of his death.

George was most proud of his elected position as Commissioner on the Ronald Wastewater District for which he served the Shoreline community for almost five years, until his illness required him to retire.

George was an experienced traveler, having traveled extensively throughout the United States and internationally including Sweden, Denmark, France, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, and Thailand.

George will be remembered for his love of card and board games, especially hearts, and his uncanny ability to “shoot the moon”, and his love for all things Lord of the Rings, inspiring his nickname Gandalf the White and his car Shadowfax.

George was a gold enthusiast and loved to go mining for nuggets. George had a wacky sense of humor which had him loving Stewart, the one eyed minion, and other quirky gag gifts.

George is survived by his wife Velma, son Robert George Webster; daughter Robin Kay (Webster) Rayfield; son-in- law Brian M. Rayfield and grandchildren, Allison K. Webster, Christopher R. Webster, Phillip J. Webster, Grant A. Rayfield and Jacqueline G. Rayfield.
