Brookside Elementary on Lockout Friday while police searched for suspect

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

On Friday, January 26, 2018 Brookside Elementary parents were understandably concerned when they received a notice from the school that it was in Lockout because of police activity in the area.

The Lockout started at 3:11pm at the end of the school day.

In a Lockout no one is allowed in or out of the building but activities can continue inside because there is no direct threat to the school itself.

In a Lockdown, the threat is perceived to be to the school itself. Staff and students have to turn out the lights and hide.

In this case, according to LFP Police, a suspect ran from an officer, then crashed his car. He exited the car, which some bystanders said was in a creek, and ran.

The police told the school to go into Lockout, while a K9 unit and multiple officers searched the area. They searched for 45 minutes and determined that the suspect was not in the area.

The Lockout was lifted and school busses arrived at 5pm to take the kids home.

Police are reasonably certain they have identified the suspect, who is known to have outstanding arrest warrants. The investigation continues.

Brookside is at 17447 37th Ave NE, Lake Forest Park 98155.

Edmonds police pursuit into Shoreline ends in power outage for residents

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

By Diane Hettrick

According to Edmonds Police spokesperson Shane Hawley, it all started with a sandwich.

And it ended with 1200 Shoreline residents in the dark for nine hours.

Subway Sandwich at 238th Hwy 99 in Edmonds, is open 24 hours. A couple came in just before 3am on Tuesday and ordered sandwiches.

“Apparently, the two suspects were upset with how the clerk was making their sandwich, wanted something they were out of and jumped the counter to try and get it,” Hawley said.

The clerk, who was alone in the store and had been robbed the week before, started screaming. The couple left and the clerk grabbed the phone to call the police.

"The clerk was screaming and we didn’t know what was going on" said Hawley. "Two officers responded and as they were walking in, a black truck went speeding out of the parking lot from in front of the store."

An incoming officer located the truck on southbound 99 but they turned off the highway when they saw him. The officer caught up to the truck on 76th Ave W and tried to stop it. The truck continued southbound into Shoreline on Meridian.

At N 185th the driver lost control, jumped the sidewalk, and crashed into a parked car and a wooden utility pole on the southeast corner of Meridian.

The lights went out for 1200 households.

Both occupants refused medical treatment. Neither would claim to be the driver.

The male was booked for eluding a police vehicle. He also had a $35,000 warrant for a domestic violence charge. The female passenger was booked for threatening the clerk.

City Light registered the outage at 3:15am and dispatched a crew. 185th was closed from 1st Ave to Meridian. Buses were delayed and rerouted during the morning commute.

At noon, power was restored and the road was reopened.

All for chipotle sauce.

Toddler survives two story fall - the rest of the story

Sunday, August 20, 2017

The toddler fell into a planting bed like the ones
in this photo, directly across from the fire station

By Diane Hettrick

On Friday, August 11, 2017, a three year old boy named Michael fell out of a second story window from an apartment at the Arabella, 17763 15th Ave NE in the North City business district of Shoreline.

He survived with only minor injuries, although he was transported to Children's by a Medic unit to be checked out.

A close friend of the family provided the rest of the story.

Michael's mother has been in a very serious car crash. She has broken ribs, whiplash, and a concussion. Out of town family members are there are assisting her. She is in considerable pain.

Michael had been put to bed, tucked in, and given his last sip of water.

Family didn't realize the window was even opened. It's not their home so no one had any idea he would get up, let alone lean on the screen.

"The windows are super low, and there are no safety locks at all. The only ventilation is by opening a window. Unfortunately they can't just open it and lock it at a two inch space."

Michael leaned against the screen and it popped right out. He fell two stories.

Some of the Arabella windows are right over the sidewalk. His window is over a landing, filled with dirt and shrubbery, and that's what he landed on.

Not only that, the apartment is directly across from the North City fire station. Fire fighters actually saw him fall. They ran across the street and began attending to him immediately.

The very next day, the friend purchased and installed window locks to prevent this from happening again.

Fire departments often try to warn people about the dangers of windows. Screens are not built to resist weight. In this article from Safe Kids Snohomish County, they point out that every hardware store carries locks which can be easily installed to prevent windows from opening accidentally.

The friend wants people to know about this danger and the easy prevention of locks. "No child should be stuck in that situation again."

Update: Shoreline Fire has some window guards for free. They allow the window to open 4 inches and no more.

Reps. Kagi and Ryu respond to major fire at Fircrest facility

Statement by Rep. Ruth Kagi (D-32nd District)

“This morning there was a substantial fire at Fircrest. Fircrest is a vital part of our community and performs critical work taking care of individuals with serious developmental disabilities from around the state.

“We have consulted with the Department of Social and Health Services about the safety of clients and staff at Fircrest, damage caused by this fire, and what happens next.

“The Department has assured us that there is a plan for continuing operations in the short term and will address the fire damage in the long term.

“We will continue to work, as lawmakers and representatives of the district, to make sure that the people at Fircrest won’t see a disruption in their care.

“I appreciate that the staff at Fircrest and firefighters responded quickly and safely evacuated very vulnerable clients.”

Statement by Rep. Cindy Ryu (D-32nd District)

“This was a serious fire—and the response by Fircrest staff and firefighters to safely evacuate everyone was seriously heroic.

“If this building is a total loss, it needs to be rebuilt or its function restored elsewhere. Additionally, we need to address ongoing infrastructure problems at Fircrest. That would require funding in the state capital budget and we will work together for one that funds construction projects for Residential Habilitation Centers like Fircrest, schools, colleges, parks, community services, and the environment around the state.

“I want to thank the staff and firefighters for their stellar efforts in the face of what could have been a terrible tragedy and ask for community support during these difficult times for Fircrest staff and clients.”

Major fire at Fircrest

Building fire at Fircrest

A fire in a gas dryer at Fircrest has destroyed the entire building housing the laundry.

Fire crews from Woodinville, Bothell, Northshore, Kirkland, Snohomish, and Seattle are responding.

The fire spread rapidly in the old building and collapsed the roof.

Crews are attacking the fire from all sides to keep it from spreading.

North City Water is having no trouble delivering sufficient water to fight the fire, but fire crews are hampered in getting sufficient water to the fire because of the old, small pipes in the Fircrest site.

Because there were laundry chemicals in the building, the fire is being treated as a haz-mat. There has been an effort to keep media and bystanders out of the path of the smoke, which is traveling north.

Uncertain if the residents are being moved, but Shoreline Fire reports that "all evacuated."

Fircrest is a residential facility for severely disabled people. It is located at NE 155th and 15th NE in Shoreline.

This story will be updated as information is available.

Glass spill in Parkwood neighborhood Monday

Thursday, July 13, 2017

A big, big thanks to the City of Shoreline Customer Response Team, Steve from Shoreline Public Works and to area neighbors for their quick response to a major glass spill on 1st Ave NE Monday morning.

Shards of plate glass covered the entire roadway for about 20 feet, just north of NE 145th St on 1st Ave NE.

Neighbors called the Shoreline Customer Response Team and Steve showed up less than 15 minutes later with a street sweeper to clean up the mess.

It is suspected that the large amount of glass and other debris fell off a truck heading to the Shoreline transfer station but there were no witnesses. The photo does not fully portray just what a huge and dangerous mess this was.

Because of the fast response, no people, pets, or vehicles were harmed.

KING 5's Rhonda Lee at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park

Viewers of KING 5 News saw a familiar view for the weather reports at 4pm, 5p, and 6pm, as they were shot live at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park.

Meteorologist Rhonda Lee began her career in Louisiana, and joined KING late last winter after working at a station in the Denver area.

KING rarely does weather on location, but the sunny skies demanded a great view and Shoreline can provide it.

The crew used a drone as well as a standard television camera to get shots that were transmitted live from the park. The drone was piloted by one man while another operated the drone's camera.

Our photographer Wayne Pridemore was on the spot taking photographs of the personality and crew and getting the story.

Spartan Gym evacuated after gas leak

Wednesday, May 3, 2017

The Spartan Recreation Center closed Monday after a gas leak was discovered.

The fire department evacuated the gym facility while the leak was stopped, but there are some repairs that need to occur before the full heating system can be turned back on.

The fire department cleared the Center to reopen after about an hour. However, there is currently no heat in the locker rooms, the Olympic and Cascade rooms, and the lobby.

The rest of the building has heat and there is hot water. City staff are working diligently with the School District to get heat to the entire building as soon as possible.

They were talking to repair vendors on Tuesday to get an estimate on when the equipment would be fixed and the full facility would have heat.

Tree flattens car driven by Shoreline resident

Thursday, April 27, 2017

The vehicle flattened by a falling tree on I-5 near Fife was driven by a Shoreline woman.

According to TV reporting by KIRO 7, Mary Sabetto was in slow traffic on I-5, going to visit her sister in Tacoma, when the wind pressure caused a diseased tree to snap about ten feet off the ground and fall. As it fell it knocked down other trees, one of which fell directly on top of Sabetto's car, crushing it.

The tree, a cottonwood, fell across three lanes. It also hit another vehicle but that driver was not seriously injured and the car was able to be driven from the scene.

As far as Sabetto knows, she was driving down the freeway and woke up on a gurney at Harborview. She doesn't remember being removed from her car or being airlifted to Harborview.

She's in a collar with a broken rib and compression fractures. She'll be in a body cast for at least six weeks while she heals. She in in pain but was able to talk to a reporter. (See video)

KIRO 7 has a dash cam video of the tree falling.

Attention rumor mill: there was no ICE action in Shoreline

Friday, February 24, 2017

Generic Home Depot photo
Around 2:30pm on Wednesday, Shoreline police were investigating a report that three high school students had stolen a maintenance golf cart from an apartment complex near Aurora Village.

Officers located the students and chased them through the Aurora Village parking lot in the vicinity of Home Depot. At least one of them was captured.

Up the block at the corner of Aurora Village, Hispanic day laborers congregate to wait for jobs.

An eyewitness to the police chase put those facts together and posted this to her Facebook page:

This happened today!
"Went to Home Depot to buy some lumber. ICE agents were in the parking lot arresting guys stumping for work..."

Not ICE agents, said the Seattle ICE representative.

"Our deportation officers conduct targeted enforcement operations every day in locations around the country as part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to protect the nation, uphold public safety and protect the integrity of our immigration laws and border controls.
"These operations involve existing, established Fugitive Operations Teams.
"ICE does not conduct sweeps, checkpoints or raids that target aliens indiscriminately."

In other words, they would be looking for specific individuals, not doing random sweeps of day laborers.

Meanwhile, the Facebook post is being widely spread and embellished. People are giving each other advice about what to do when confronted by police.

The King County Sheriff's office is doing its best to dispel the rumors, releasing this statement to all media:

There was NO ICE or immigration related police activity at the Shoreline Home Depot earlier this week. We had a large police presence  related to a theft that occurred at a nearby apartment complex and the suspects were seen in the area of Home Depot!
