Follow-up: naked driver causes power outage in Shoreline

Friday, June 19, 2015

A 24 year old woman was driving the vehicle that collided with a utility pole around 1am Friday morning near the corner of NE 155th and 1st Ave NE in Shoreline. This is the intersection by Twin Ponds Park and virtually in front of Shoreline Fire Station 65.

Sergeant Klein of the Shoreline Police was on patrol in the Twin Ponds parking lot, heard the crash and was on the scene immediately. Shoreline Fire responded immediately. When they arrived, the car was draped in wires and the naked driver was unresponsive, going in and out of consciousness.

Although her injuries did not appear severe, she was transported to Harborview. A blood test was taken there which will be sent to the state crime lab for analysis.

The driver's city of residence is Tacoma.

Power was knocked out to over 4000 customers for several hours until City Light crews were able to repair the damage.

According to Shoreline Police, the Aegis facility on 1st Avenue NE had to call out their emergency staff due to the power outage for patients needing oxygen and other electronic monitoring.

Wednesday: you never want to make the evening news

The media discovers Shoreline
By Diane Hettrick

As I was following the media coverage of Wednesday's events, I kept remembering the phrase "you never want to see yourself in the evening news."

We were definitely in the evening news Wednesday. We were lucky that the apparent threat did not materialize, and our time in the media spotlight was short.

I have gotten only positive feedback about the performance of the schools and police. One person remarked that every time there is a disaster, everyone learns. It is clear that both schools and police have learned and made their preparations.

Emergency responders at Meridian Park Elementary

Lake Forest Park police recently conducted an "active shooter" scenario at Lake Forest Park Elementary. Shoreline Police conducted a full scale scenario a few years ago at Shoreline Christian with volunteer high school students as actors. The police were ready.

Shoreline Schools rebuilt their high schools with the capability to lock them down with the flip of a switch. They have learned how to manage the logistics of thousands of terrified parents trying to get to their children.

Advances in technology have helped everyone. Cell phones make it possible to reach all parents. Communication in the field is easier for emergency responders.

Representatives from both police departments, both cities, and the school district will be holding meetings to discuss the response. What went right, what went wrong, what could be improved. I will be very interested to hear their conclusions.

Trees vs houses - not quite as previously reported

Final stages of demolition

By Diane Hettrick

I got it wrong. In the previous story of Trees vs Houses, I reported that the tree fell and damaged the house, which had to be demolished.

Another neighbor has weighed in with what he saw, which was the tree coming down.

The back story: according to property records, it looks like the house was an inheritance. So no one was living in it. The heirs decided to demolish the house and obtained a City permit.

The demolition crew used the tree, which obviously they planned to take down anyway, to help demolish the house. They deliberately felled the tree so it sliced through the house.

This is one story that just gets stranger and stranger as details emerge. Any other neighbors care to report in?

Trees vs houses

Monday, December 22, 2014

See the update to this story

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Steven H. Robinson

When I first saw this house coming down, I thought it was something to do with the coming Sound Transit Station because it is on 5th NE next to I-5 in the heart of the 185th rezone. But no, it was not.

A chance conversation provided me with the answer, which actually was far more dramatic and elemental than the inexorable march of population growth.

Remember those wind storms and downed trees we experienced mid-November?

This house had a big tree fall on it.

According to a neighbor, the tree didn't just land on the roof. It sliced all the way through the house to the foundation. Owners had little choice but to tear the whole thing down.

We're checking, but so far there are no reports of injuries or anyone inside the house at the time.

The site is now just dirt - a bare, vacant lot, with tarps set up to protect the houses near it on lower ground.
