Shoreline man wins lottery, buys a new car for first time

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

A longtime Lottery player from Shoreline won $230,000 from a Hit 5 drawing on November 12. The winning ticket was purchased earlier that day from the Shoreline Fred Meyer (18325 Aurora Ave N). The man said, “I always knew I would win. If you don’t play, you can’t win.”

The winner and his family were most excited about the new car they were able to buy.

He told Lottery officials at the Everett regional office, “I haven’t owned a new car since ‘91. I already bought a Toyota RAV-4 from a local dealership.” He added, “We will also be able to make some timely home improvements just in time for the holidays. I will be re-doing all of the windows in my house – double pane windows, baby!”

The winner said he has been playing Washington’s Lottery for about 6 years using the same numbers. “They’re just random numbers that I feel are right,” said the winner.

When someone in Washington wins a Hit 5 jackpot, others in the state benefit, too. The Fred Meyer that sold the winning ticket will receive a $2,300 selling bonus.

Additionally, proceeds from Washington’s Lottery benefit the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account, providing grants to college students statewide. To learn more about Washington’s Lottery, its beneficiaries and to review all up-to-date winning numbers, visit the website,

Lake Forest Park man involved in head on collision in Edmonds

Saturday, June 14, 2014

According to our news partner My Edmonds News, a Lake Forest Park man was involved in a head on accident in Edmonds after being struck by a driver in a stolen van. The accident occurred in the 22100 block of Highway 99 just after 8pm Friday night, and sent the LFP man and his passenger to Harborview Medical Center.

According to Edmonds police spokesman Sgt. Mark Marsh, the truck was southbound on Highway 99, stopped in the two-way left turn lane waiting to make a turn, when it was struck by the van, which was headed northbound after veering into the two-way lane.

The driver of the van, which turned out to be stolen out of Lynnwood, attempted to flee the scene on foot. “Witnesses to the accident chased the man down, catching him by Edmonds Furniture and held him down until police arrived,” Marsh said.

The truck’s driver, a 48-year-old Lake Forest Park man, and his passenger, a 63-year-old Brier woman, were both taken to Harborview. The van driver was transported to Swedish/Edmonds for treatment and investigation of hit-and-run with injuries and possession of stolen property, among other possible charges, Marsh said, adding he will be booked into the Snohomish County Jail.

The northbound lanes of Hwy 99 were closed for the investigation, with traffic being detoured around the accident scene. The condition of the driver and passenger of the victim vehicle will be updated when more information is known, Marsh added.

For Sale: Colacurcio house in Lake Forest Park

Saturday, May 31, 2014

For less than a million dollars, you can own the home of deceased organized crime boss, Frank Colacurcio.

Colacurcio, who died in 2010, was the owner of strip clubs Sugar's in Shoreline and Rick's in Lake Forest Park.

From The Seattle Times:
In June 2008, the FBI, IRS and local police raided the then-90-year-old Colacurcio’s home and other properties, after a two-year undercover investigation built a federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) case against him and his associates.
A year later, a grand jury indicted Colacurcio; his son, Frank Colacurcio Jr.; and four associates involved in operating four Western Washington strip clubs. The indictments alleged Colacurcio Sr. and the others conspired to use the clubs as fronts for prostitution and money laundering.
Authorities pursued the case, in part, to dismantle Colacurcio’s syndicate — a target of law enforcement for decades — by seizing his clubs: Rick’s in Seattle; Fox’s in Parkland, Pierce County; Honey’s in Everett; and Sugar’s in Shoreline.

His home in Sheridan Beach escaped the forfeitures, and is on the market.

Sale of the Colacurcio home will mark the end of an era. It’s the last among three prominent Colacurcio-owned properties along a stretch of Highway 522 between Lake City and Lake Forest Park that marked senior’s latter-day stomping grounds.
Rick’s strip club still operates, but under different ownership, and the building that for years housed Colacurcio’s Talents West administrative offices is now home to a medical-marijuana dispensary.

The Sugar's property was bought by a well-respected Shoreline businessman.

Monday, May 19, 2014

Danford Grant, the Seattle attorney who pled guilty to rape and burglary in attacks on massage therapists, including one case in Shoreline, was given 25 years. The number of cases against him was reduced in a plea deal where he pled guilty and avoided a trial.

According to our news partner KING5.com,

Danford Grant could be released on parole after 15 years. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
Prosecutors said Grant’s victims were so traumatized, they didn’t want to face him in court at his sentencing. Prosecutors say he intimidated the Asian immigrants into sex thinking they wouldn’t go to police because of shame or their history in the sex trade. In at least one case, prosecutors say Grant brandished a knife.

Updated: Car accident on Meridian snaps telephone pole

Wednesday, April 16, 2014

Shoreline Area News Contributor A J took a snapshot of a vehicle that just slammed into a power pole, snapping it off at the base, along Meridian Ave North on the east side of the road in the grass between North 200th and North 195th Street around 6:10pm Wednesday evening.

The photo looks southbound on Meridian Ave N. The 2000 Blue Mercedes ML320 was already in the position you see in the photo with its horn stuck in the on position blaring constantly.

AJ says, "It seemed quite more serious than normal with both the horn stuck on and a severed telephone pole. While I was talking to the 911 dispatcher I saw three Shoreline Police vehicles speeding north towards the accident with full sirens and lights."

No other vehicles were involved. The driver was alone in the car and suffered no apparent serious injuries.

From our news partner The Seattle Times:

The former office manager of the Lake Forest Park Water District was sentenced Tuesday to 27 months in prison for embezzling more that $350,000 and using it to purchase personal items and pay college tuition for her children, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Seattle.
