UFOs over Shoreline

Friday, January 31, 2014

Text and photos by Wayne Pridemore

Friday night, January 31, 2014 at 9:00pm a UFO suddenly appeared over the houses at Richmond Beach. When it was first sighted the UFO was at a very low altitude, no more than fifty feet. It flew very slowly southwest towards Puget Sound. It slowly gained height but seem to maintain a constant speed of ten miles an hour.

The object was a glowing orange in color and had a glob like shape. Not four minutes later a companion UFO followed the route of the first one.

When the third UFO appeared I ran to get my camera to document this Roswell like experience. Believe it or not at least fifteen UFOs were sighted. Several times three or four were visible at the same time. Man, what a night!

CORRECTION Woman rescued from burning car in Lake Forest Park on Sunday

Monday, January 6, 2014

Correction: the collision was on Sunday.

From kirotv.com

Two strangers and a police officer saved a woman trapped in a burning car, after she was hit by a semi-truck whose driver is now being investigated for driving under the influence of drugs.
Police and witnesses said that the woman was in her car on state Route 522 or Bothell Way, waiting for a turn signal at 170th Place. A semi-truck hit her car from behind, sending her car spinning into the intersection.
“There are some indications that he may have partially driven over the car. We do know the gas tank was ruptured which caused the fire," said Officer Morris Parrish of the Lake Forest Park Police Department.
Parrish said that the subsequent actions of the two citizens likely saved the woman’s life.
James Mehl, who had just run a mile on the Burke-Gilman trail, and Mark Vanderveen, out walking his dog, both rushed toward the burning car.

Joseph Cooley sentenced to 28 years for the shooting death of Shoreline resident Tiana Montgomery

Saturday, October 26, 2013

From our news partner, The Seattle Times

"King County Superior Court Judge Julia Garratt said she agreed to follow a joint recommendation from the state and defense because of Cooley’s lack of a criminal history and young age. She sentenced him to a prison term just shy of 28 years on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, the low end of the standard sentence range. Both charges carried firearms enhancements.
"Garratt said she was sure Cooley wishes he could go back to May 16, 2012, and make a different choice.
'It’s quite clear from everything I heard that the long-range, domino effect of the split-second decision you made has impacted a whole courtroom of people,' the judge said.
'I believe you when you say you’re remorseful,' Garratt continued. 'Unfortunately, that doesn’t bring back this beautiful young woman.'"

Man uses phone app to lure 12 year old Lake Forest Park girl

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Story from Q13 Fox

A cellphone app led to the sexual assault of a 12 year old Lake Forest Park girl

“Every single day a new app comes out on a phone and as parents we really need to be involved,” Lake Forest Park Police Chief Stephen Sutton said. “That was the cause of this.”
Adults may not have heard of many of the apps, but teens are increasingly using sites and apps like Ask.fm, Spraffl or Whisper, where they can remain anonymous and post secrets about themselves.
“Facebook is barely used anymore,” Leen, a junior at Shorecrest High School, said. “Because when you say something, you actually know who’s saying it.”
In the case of the 12-year-old, police said she was communicating with 21-year-old Ron Peterson via the app, Whisper. The app allows users to reveal secrets while staying secret, but there is also the option to see if other users are nearby and chat with them. In their conversations, the girl lied to Peterson and told him she was older.
Peterson told detectives he found the girl on the app, and eventually convinced her to climb out of her window at home and take off with him. He took her to a nearby motel where he told police he had sex with her.

Lake Forest Park woman being investigated for embezzlement

From our news partner, Capitol Hill Seattle Blog

Multiple trips to Disneyland and Hawaii, a new car, a pet retreat, and thousands of dollars in college tuition payments — all paid for by the director of a children’s after school program in Capitol Hill, allegedly using the Kids’ Club bank account.

According to the lawsuit and police report, recently obtained by CHS after a public records request, for three years ending in 2011, Cathy Reed stole more than $236,000 from her former employer, Kids’ Club at 18th Ave’s Stevens Elementary. According to the allegations, Reed used the Club’s money like it was her own personal bank account. The roster of alleged transactions runs more than 15 pages of the 24-page suit against her.

Kids’ Club runs before school and after school programs, as well as a summer camp, from the Steven’s Elementary School campus at 18th and Galer.

This is the first time the allegations against Reed have been revealed to the public.

Month by month the Kids’ Club civil suit, filed in April in King County, documents Reed’s alleged spending spree as she used the nonprofit’s checks and credit cards to buy everything from the lavish to the mundane. In some transactions, the complaint alleges she spent thousands of dollars of the nonprofit’s money on vacations and tuition fees at Washington State University, where her daughter attended. Other times, it was a few dollars for coffee and a purchase at the Wallingford toy store, Archie McPhee’s.

The allegations of Reed’s amazingly brazen embezzlement included giving herself unauthorized raises and bonuses totaling $62,500 and spending nearly $175,000 in unauthorized personal purchases. The director’s role was authorized for a salary of $42,000 a year when she took the job in 2007. The board authorized a raise to more than $45,000 in 2008. The next year, according to the lawsuit, Reed took matters into her own hands by increasing her salary to more than $50,000. The organization’s lawyers say, by that time, she had already begun abusing the Kids’ Club credit card and bank accounts starting with a March transaction:

In the beginning, the Kids’ Club and its board were apparently oblivious to the alleged embezzlement. While the suit says Reed allegedly began stealing thousands of dollars from Kids’ Club as early as 2008, only six months after she was hired, no one in the organization appears to have said anything until 2011. Current board president Kari Kaill told CHS she couldn’t comment on the previous board’s actions.

Kaill said she joined the volunteer board in September 2011, shortly before Reed was fired in December.

CHS attempted to contact Reed several times without success. At the Reed’s home in Lake Forest Park, a man who identified himself as her husband told CHS she was not home Tuesday evening and declined to comment further on the case. Calls to a number listed for the Reed household have gone unanswered.

In May, Kaill reported Reed’s alleged embezzlement to Seattle Police. The case is being handled by SPD’s fraud unit, according to the police report.

“We aren’t seeking attention with this,” Berntsen said, who is only representing Kids’ Club in the civil case. “[Kid's Club] just wants their money back.”

According to court documents, Reed allegedly stole at least $236,000 from the nonprofit program including these local expenditures:
  • September 2008 - Kids’ Club check for $21 check to Shorecrest High School.
  • October 2010 - $1,307 to the Shorecrest High School booster club.
  • November 2011 - Reed wrote a $3,800 Kids’ Club check made out to the City of Lake Forest Park, where she lives.

Shoreline Man wins $250,000 playing Mega Millions with Washington's Lottery

Friday, October 4, 2013

The 7-11 at 1232 North 185th Street in Shoreline
sold a $250,000 lottery ticket to a Shoreline man

A man from Shoreline recently won $250,000 playing Washington’s Lottery Mega Millions game.

He realized he won last week when he was checking his tickets at a local grocery store. At first glance, he thought the ticket reader revealed that he had won $250. He said, “I couldn’t see it very well, so I called the store-keeper over, and asked her to help. She said the ticket was worth $250,000!”

After claiming his prize from Washington’s Lottery Everett Regional Office last Friday, September 27, the Ward’s Cove Company retiree went out to dinner to celebrate. He plans to share some of his winnings with the woman who helped him in the store and invest some in stocks. He said, “I just feel lucky that I won and later on I’ll give some money away.”

This was the winner’s first time playing Mega Millions. He said, “I used my own numbers; whichever numbers came into my head.” He has purchased Washington’s Lottery tickets regularly in the past, and only recently got back into playing. The man previously won $500 on a Washington’s Lottery Scratch ticket, but recognizes this as his first big win.

Mega Millions is a multi-state jackpot game. If someone in Washington State wins a Mega Millions prize, others in Washington benefit, too. For example, the retail location that sold the winning ticket, the 7-Eleven at 1232 North 185th Street in Shoreline, will receive a $2,500 selling bonus.

Additionally, proceeds from Washington’s Lottery benefit the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account, providing scholarships to college students statewide. To learn more about Washington’s Lottery, its beneficiaries and to review all up-to-date winning numbers, visit WA Lottery.

The winner has chosen to remain anonymous.

However, according to our News Partner MyEdmondsNews, the noise was the sound of cannons being fired at the Madrona K-8 School in Edmonds. "The school received a visit from a group of Civil War re-enactors — their fourth visit in eight years — which involved the use of gun powder — but no ammunition — in demonstrating cannon use."

Car crashes into house in Kenmore, causes natural gas scare

Monday, September 23, 2013

According to the Bothell Reporter, when a car crashed into a home in Kenmore, it destroyed the gas meter and broke the gas line in the home.

The quick thinking and emergency training of the homeowner averted a possibly major explosion.

(Jeff) Fjelstul noticed the car destroyed his natural gas meter and gas began filling his home.
"I saw what I thought was smoke coming from the car," he said. "I envisioned a mushroom cloud over Kenmore.
"One specific lesson from his trauma class kicked in - secure the scene first.
"I ran inside and cut the power to the house and my wife called 911," he said.
That quick thinking may have saved his home, and possibly the neighborhood, as the uninterrupted gas line filled the cool night air with natural gas."

Judge says man who killed SCC professor is an extreme danger to the community

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

According to our news partner The Seattle Times:

A judge said Monday that Donnell D. Jackson is “an extreme danger to the community” and set his bail at $2 million in connection with the unprovoked knife attack Friday night in Pioneer Square that killed Shoreline Community College professor Troy Wolff and injured his girlfriend.
King County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Don Raz, who requested the high bail, noted that Jackson has “only been living in Seattle for two months,” is homeless and claims he’s been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Public defender Maureen McKee asked King County District Court Judge Arthur Chapman “to impose a reasonable amount of bail,” arguing Jackson, 44, “suffers from an extreme mental illness” and would benefit from mental-health treatment outside of jail.
Noting that may be true, Chapman said it was very likely Jackson would fail to appear in court for future hearings and “also very likely some other crime would occur if he were released.” He noted that Jackson appears to have a criminal history in California, including a conviction for a crime that was “tantamount to arson.”
“This case is beyond tragic,” said Chapman, who also said “whether he (Jackson) has a mental illness in fact is still open to question.”

LFP Police: Educate your child on stranger safety

Friday, September 13, 2013

From the Lake Forest Park Police Department

On 09/11/13 at approximately 0840am, a 9 year old child was walking to school south on Forest Park Drive in Lake Forest Park. At Ballinger Way NE, the child was contacted by a male who spoke both English and Spanish to him while walking him to the area of 35th Ave NE and Ballinger Way NE at the Lake Forest Park Elementary.

At approximately 3:30pm on the same date, the child left the elementary and as he was walking home, the same subject re-contacted the child a second time and walked with him almost to the child’s home in the area. During this second contact, the subject stated they could be friends and that he knew where the child lived. At some point, the subject also put on a pair of gloves.

The child told his mother who called 911. Lake Forest Park Police responded and it was determined that no crime took place. The following day, a subject was contacted by Lake Forest Park Police; however, they could not confirm that it was the same subject.

The Lake Forest Park Police want to remind parents that if their children walk to school without their parents or guardians, they should educate their children on stranger safety and to report all suspicious persons by calling 911. The Lake Forest Park Police Department will continue directed patrols at Lake Forest Park Elementary and Brookside Elementary and the areas surrounding both schools before and after school hours to enhance safety for the children who walk to and from school.

AOL pulls the plug on Patch

Friday, August 16, 2013

According to an article in GeekWire, AOL has pulled the plug on its hyperlocal blogs, called "Patch".

Rumors have been swirling for a year that Patch was failing to make money for its corporate sponsor and that its stories were not making goal on number of hits.

Some editors, including the local Patch editor, were fired in December, and Patch went to a model of multiple editions under one editor. Quality suffered as a result, as the editions relied on press releases and regional stories.

Friday, August 16, 2013, AOL pulled the plug on its entire Washington network. Most staff were laid off with just a small crew left until October 15 when the entire operation will shut down.

It is unknown what will happen to the sites.
