Christmas caroling, hot chocolate, and visits with Santa

On Saturday December 2, 2023 the 24th annual North City Tree Lighting took place hosted by Les Schwab in the North City Business District.

Around the Sound community band

Supported by the North City Neighborhood Association and the North City Business Association, attendees were entertained by the Around the Sound Community Band as they awaited Santa's arrival.

Santa arrived in the Antlermobile

Santa and his elves arrived by the traditional North City Water District "Antlermobile" and fun was had by all.

Glowing antlers and a beautiful blue tree shining over all

With a flip of his magic light switch, the tree was illuminated atop the water tower for all to enjoy throughout this Holiday season.

North City Business Association's 24th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Festival and Toy Drive December 2, 2023

Monday, November 27, 2023

We at North City Water District look forward to this special moment every year— when hundreds of colorful lights in the shape of a giant Christmas tree suddenly light up the night sky, installed by our crew on top of our 3.7 million gallon reservoir.

As always, this festival offers fun for the entire family, including live music, sing-along carols, warm beverages, tasty Christmas cookies, and photos with Santa Claus... but there's something extra this year:

The Center for Human Services is conducting a Toy Drive!

If you are able, consider bringing a new, unwrapped toy to donate on the night of the event.

Here are a few ideas:
  • Infants: plush animals, sensory and developmental toys
  • Children ages 3-10: books, science kits, Legos, puzzles, games, soccer balls or basketballs, art kits / supplies, dolls, plush animals
  • Teens: sports equipment, board games, science kits, art supplies, gift cards for clothing or music stores
We hope to see you all there!

Les Schwab at NE 180th St and 15th Ave NE in North City on Saturday December 2, 2023 starting at 6:30pm

Thank you to this year's generous Sponsors:

Fun Run photos

Runners are encouraged to wear appropriate costumes

All photos by Wayne Pridemore

On Thanksgiving morning, the Richmond Beach Community Association (RBCA) held its 17th annual 10k Fun Run.

The wind might have been blowing but everyone kept their hats on

And probably for the 17th year our photographer Wayne Pridemore was there to photograph it.

At the starting point, runners are reminded of the rules and the route.

And they're off!

And then they are turned loose. It's a fun run but runners get very competitive - after all, bragging rights are at stake.

Race walkers have more fun

There is a completely different course for walkers. They take time to smell the roses (there may be a few along the way) and to wave and smile at the cameraman.

Spirit of the Race

If this creature is not the race mascot, they certainly should be!

And so it is done for another year. It will be back, so mark your calendars and start working on your hats.

Ridgecrest Halloween Parade Saturday afternoon 3-5pm October 28, 2023

Tuesday, October 24, 2023

When Halloween rolled around during the pandemic in 2020, some Ridgecrest residents got very creative. They didn't want their kids to miss the fun of Halloween with the costumes and the candy but they certainly didn't want to risk COVID-19 for anyone.

So they created a parade. Participants - adults and children - would put on their costumes and walk on the streets, which would be closed, along a pre-set route. At the end of the route every child was given a bag of candy.

The parade was scheduled for daylight hours - 3-5pm - and everyone along the route was encouraged to set up lawn chairs and watch the parade.

It was a wild success. They did it again the next two years and no one wanted to give it up!

So this year, 2023, the parade is on again, scheduled as before on the Saturday before Halloween. from 3 - 5pm. Street closures are 2:30-5:30pm.

It starts at the corner of NE 165th and 8th NE in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood of Shoreline WA.

However, it is so successful that as of a day ago, organizers were short of candy. If you can, drop off some candy at the Drumlin,  522 NE 165th St, Shoreline, WA 98155 today through Thursday, 10-26-23.

Services for Briarcrest resident Afifi Durr Tuesday, September 5, 2023

Monday, September 4, 2023

Afifi Durr 1935-2023
Afifi Durr, beloved storyteller, peace activist, neighborhood leader and true force of nature, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 at her home at Crista Assisted Living Center on Friday, August 25. 2023.

Her memorial service, graveside service, and potluck reception will be held Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

She leaves behind three sons, George, William and Charlie, a sister and two brothers, along with many friends, students, and storytelling fans. She will be missed by the many who loved her.

Originally from Lebanon, Afifi was a passionate advocate for peace in the Middle East, which led her, along with her friend and mentor Kay Bullitt, to establish the Middle East Peace Camp for youth as well as the Arabic Festival in 2002.

Afifi remained active with both festivals until she moved into assisted living this past February.

Afifi was also passionate about storytelling and was a board member and Golden Circle inductee of the Seattle Storytellers Guild. Her very first public storytelling took place at Seattle's Folklife Festival!

She loved sharing stories about her own larger-than-life experiences at American embassies around the world where she worked as a translator in addition to being married to a diplomatic corps officer.

Afifi Durr, Seattle Storytellers Guild Golden Circle Award 2021
After settling down in Shoreline in 1980 with her three boys, Afifi started her own business providing translation and interpretation services to attorneys, courthouses, hospitals and businesses including Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks, and the Seattle school district.

She also became a leader in the Briarcrest Neighborhood Association with whom she sponsored a very popular every-other-month storytelling gathering for neighbors, a number of community-wide events featuring well-known storytellers and poets, and a day-long storytelling workshop which taught attendees how to tell their own tales.

Afifi lived in the Briarcrest neighborhood of Shoreline for over 40 years. In addition to being a single parent, Afifi cared for her aging mother, whom she had brought from Lebanon to the United States.

Afifi enjoyed cooking and gardening, chatting over mint tea and cookies with friends, watching Lebanese television, checking out new Mediterranean restaurants, and giving Arabic lessons to students of all ages.

She was a devout Christian who was a member of three different church families, including the congregation of the Carmelite Monastery located in her own neighborhood of Briarcrest.

A memorial service will be held at Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Avenue in Seattle, on Tuesday, September 5th starting at 10:00am.

The memorial will be followed at 12:00noon by a graveside service at Holyrood Cemetery, 205 NE 205th Street in Shoreline, and a potluck reception gathering at North Seattle Church of the Nazarene, 13130 5th Avenue NE in Seattle, at 1:00pm.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared here for the Durr family. Her formal obituary, written by her son George, can be seen here.

Donations in Afifi's honor may be made to the Middle East Peace Camp for Children (MEPC), c/o Kadima, PO Box 28455 Seattle, WA 98118

Briarcrest Neighborhood Picnic returns after a three year 'pandemic pause'

Thursday, August 31, 2023

A lovely day in Hamlin Park

Story by Jean Hilde
Photos by Jean Hilde and Sara Kaye

On August 27, 2023 the Briarcrest Neighborhood Picnic returned to Hamlin Park after a three-year "pandemic pause" and everyone had a wonderful time!

Hamlin Park is a beautiful setting for a picnic

Estimated guest count was between 60 and 70, loads of kids, and a very diverse crowd including new folks and returnees.

Fabulous food!

Guests enjoyed free hot dogs and burgers (beef and veggie options) provided by the Briarcrest Neighborhood Association and the City of Shoreline alongside a fabulous potluck of neighbor-shared favorites.

An Ice Cream Feed (thanks to Shoreline Christian Reformed Church) and the Celestial Cake Walk had lots of eager participants.

Guests viewed the design for the new Briarcrest Park, enjoyed a "Happy 75th Birthday, Briarcrest!" display complete with a history of the 'hood and original pics of many neighborhood homes from the 1940s.

History of the neighborhood

They chatted with City of Shoreline staff about the City's new Surface Water and Comprehensive Plans, and learned how to get earthquake-ready from the BNA's Emergency Prep team.

Hopscotch and other games

A great time was had by all! Hope to see everyone again next year!
