Seeking volunteers for Ballinger Neighborhood’s 3rd Annual Friendship Festival

Tuesday, August 22, 2023

Friendship Festival September 9, 2023 Brugger’s Bog Park 1:00pm – 5:00pm

Ballinger Neighborhood’s 3rd Annual Friendship Festival at Brugger’s Bog Park is coming soon! Save the date, mark your calendars and plan to spend an afternoon with your friends and family.

The music is incredible and free! So are the food, crafts and games. Bring your lawn chair, a blanket and some sunscreen. We’ll have hot buttered corn on the cob, plenty of bottled water, ice cold slushies, and more.

Featured performers include JHP Legacy, Filipiniana / FACES Dance Company, Peter Ali (Indigenous flutist), and Janet Rayor (Stilt Dancer).

Volunteering is a great way to enjoy the entertainment while helping at the event. We are especially seeking volunteers to help with kid’s crafts and games. All crafts are sustainable (using upcycled or recycled items) and the games are friendly old-fashioned fun.

Of course, we can always use help with set-up and clean-up, too. To help, sign up here, email us at ballingerneighborhood@gmail.com or contact Londa at 206-437-9118 to learn more.

Ballinger Neighborhood is privileged to count among its diverse friends and neighbors, a richness of world cultures. Through the multicultural sharing of music, food, and friendly conversation we grow in understanding and respect for one another. Come and share, learn something new, and make a new friend or two!

Brought to you by Ballinger Neighborhood Association with funding from the City of Shoreline Neighborhood Mini-Grant program. For more information on the festival, visit www.balna.org

By Chris Drake

The early arrival of pumpkin spice and pre-season Seahawks games can mean only one thing: Oktoberfest will soon be returning to Richmond Beach

In what has become a favorite annual tradition, your Richmond Beach Community Association is once again partnering with our friends at Vault 177 for the 3rd Annual Richmond Beach Oktoberfest.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, September 23, 2023 from noon to 5pm, and promises to be even bigger and better than ever.

This family- and pet-friendly event will once again be held outdoors with tents (rain or shine) in the parking lot of Spin Alley/Vault 177.

Authentic German sausages, potato salad, kraut, and a variety of locally produced and imported German beers will be available along with kids’ meals, music, and a variety of family-friendly activities for all ages.

All proceeds directly benefit RBCA and help support community events, the newspaper, and the mission of the RBCA -- to build and connect our wonderful community.

So dust off your lederhosen and dirndls and join us for food, fun, and festivities later this month! We can’t wait to see you there, raise a glass, and help ring in the fall season. Prost!

Beat the Heat Thursday - help pull cattails from Echo Lake

Tuesday, August 15, 2023

What better way to beat the heat than to wade in a nice, cool lake?

Volunteer with the ELNA neighborhood to pull invasive cattails that are choking the swimming beach at Echo Lake Park, 19901 Ashworth Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133.

This Thursday August 17, 2023 from 4 to 6pm.

Marla Tullio, project leader, reports that the cattails are very easy to pull. "Just reach into the water, grab a handful and pull them out." They come easily out of the soft peat on the lake bed.

Five volunteers filled 12 bins in a couple of hours at the last work party.

They would like to have some company, though. Everyone is welcome. "One Scout troop could probably clear the entire lake!"

Orca statue stolen from Richmond Beach Community Park

Wednesday, August 9, 2023

STOLEN!
From the Board of the Richmond Beach Community Association

Sometime during the weekend of August 5 - 6 one of our beloved Orca sculptures disappeared from its post at the Richmond Beach Community Park next to the library.

The individual(s) that made the decision to steal from our Richmond Beach community may be rethinking that decision in the light of day; and since this is a "small town" of caring and concerned neighbors who love to talk, it is unlikely that this theft will go unsolved for long.

Since these are considered a valuable piece of commissioned art, if the orcas are not returned, we will have no choice but to move forward with an investigation, police involvement and potential subsequent charges.

Before we start down that path, we would like to offer a “no-questions-asked” drop off of the missing orca regardless of its current condition.

Please deliver the orca to the Richmond Beach Library by Friday, August 11, 2023.

We have been overwhelmed by the community response to the orcas -- how much they are enjoyed, how everyone looks forward to their return in the spring and how protective folks are of them.

Let’s work together, hold out for someone to do the right thing again this time and keep our beloved Orcas from becoming an endangered species.

Please contact the RBCA Board at Board@RichmondBeachWA.org with any information relating to the missing orcas.

Look what a few good volunteers can do

Bins are full of cattails pulled from Echo Lake

Look what a few good volunteers can do!!!

The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association project to remove invasive cattails from the beach at Echo Lake Park had a setback when everything shut down for the pandemic.

But work parties have resumed and the one on July 27, 2023 was extremely productive.

Five volunteers = 12 compost bins of invasive cattails pulled from Echo Lake!

It was slightly hazardous, though. The lake has become very popular for fishing so you need to be careful where you step. Fish hooks and fishing line were everywhere.

Thank you to volunteers Marla and Matt Tullio, Pat Deagan and Claudia Meadows, Manuele Meyer.

New volunteers can still get in on the fun. Cattail pulling parties are scheduled for
  • Saturday 10am-noon
    • Aug 5th
  • Thursday 4-6pm
    • Aug 17th
    • Aug 31st
There are two kinds of cattails, so you don't have to pull every cattail in the lake. Meet by the beach in Echo Lake Park at N 200th and Ashworth Ave N and be prepared to get in the water.

Fire Wednesday in Northcrest Park reported by a runner

Friday, July 21, 2023

A fire Wednesday July 19, 2023 in Northcrest Park (827 NE 170th St, Shoreline, WA 98155) in the Ridgecrest neighborhood of Shoreline was apparently started by fireworks.

Fortunately, it was spotted almost immediately by neighbor Christopher Webb whose running route goes through the park. He called 911 and then stayed to direct Shoreline Fire Department to the location. He observed their work, took a photo -- and then continued his run!

The fire was located south of the play equipment.

Because of the immediate reporting, the fire was quickly extinguished.

Update: Runner / photographer Christopher Webb was the hero of the day.

Fierce competition for winners in Parkwood's Best in Shoreline pet show

Wednesday, July 19, 2023

Parkwood winners

The Parkwood Neighborhood Association hosted their first annual "Best in Shoreline" pet show on July 8, 2023 at Twin Ponds Park.

The event was open to all Shoreline residents and kicked off with the neighborhood association Board members serving free ice cream to neighbors.

The pet show drew an impressive crowd of spectators and over twenty dog contestants in six categories. The competition for each category was stiff. The judges awarded ribbons to the following dogs and pet handlers:

  • Most fashionable: Nami/Vinod
  • Best kid pet handler: Ashby/Mathis Christian
  • Best trained: Kira/Stephanie Henry
  • Best trick: Rosie/Nicole Iorio
  • Most free spirited: Juno/Zoe Good-Brummer
  • Most ridiculously good looking: Maia/Zaldy Rogero

Best in Show: Kira with handler Stephanie Henry

After intense deliberation, the judges awarded Best in Show to Kira and their handler Stephanie Henry.

Maia was a close second and awarded runner up.

Winners in each category received pet prizes/toys, and gift certificates to Doggo Self Wash, located in the Parkwood Shopping Plaza at 152nd and Aurora.

The Parkwood Neighborhood Association would also like to thank the Shoreline Central Animal Hospital for their donation of a flea and tick treatment, collapsible water bowls, and judges for the event. Ice cream and toppings were generously donated by Town and Country Market.

The Parkwood Neighborhood Association would like to thank all participants in this year's pet show and look forward to meeting more neighbors and their pets when they host Best in Shoreline again in 2024.

North City Neighborhood Association meets on Sunday at the Pump Station mini-park

Saturday, June 24, 2023

The City of Shoreline recently completed the reservoir lid on Pump Station 26. Located on the west side of 10th Ave NE, a few hundred feet south of NE 185th St, it's a great little park and gives us an excuse to celebrate the start of summer!

Sunday, June 25, 2023 from 1 - 3pm.

Join the North City Neighborhood Association (NCNA) to meet your neighbors. Learn about our plans for summer and beyond. We'll have Otter Pops for the young and young at heart.

John Featherstone and Christie Lovelace, Shoreline City staff, will be there to answer questions about the Pump Station upgrades and stormwater management.

The space was formerly a large, open retention pond which collected water runoff from the surrounding neighborhood. Now it's a space that the NCNA can use for gatherings.

After a rainy start, Ridgecrest parking lot yard sales have a wonderful day

Sunday, June 11, 2023

Canopies, plastic, and umbrellas were the order of the early morning

The Annual Tabernacle Baptist Church Parking Lot Sale in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood on Saturday, June 10, 2023 had a very drizzly start to their day. Some people had canopies and others were using large sheets of plastic to keep their ware dray.

Patty Hale was there with the Ridgecrest Neighborhood information booth.

Wet and cold while people were getting set up

She reports that "It drizzled and misted until almost noon. And while it was wet and folks tried keeping their wares dry by every means possible - it was a success.

"Shoppers were few the first hour or so, but as the morning wore on the turn out improved. By noon there were lots of them!

The skies cleared, the plastic came off, and the shoppers came to buy.

"Everyone I saw made a least one purchase. Some bought enough that they had to bring in a vehicle to pick up their merchandise. Sellers seemed happy - I was pleased to see how well they did by the end of the day.

A little sun and happy shoppers

"The Pastor of the Church, Tom Ruhlman, allowed them to stay for as long as they wanted to. The last were packed up by 3:30pm.

"Church volunteers barbecued and gave away hot dogs throughout the entire day."

Gordon Snyder: There are Good People in my Neighborhood

Saturday, May 20, 2023

The Horizon View Park photo
that Gordon sent to his friend
Story and photos by Gordon Snyder

There are Good People in my Neighborhood. Here’s my simple proof…

A few days ago Shoreline Area News published a photo i made at Horizon View Park. The photo is full of spring green colors, trees budding out and a picnic table.

After taking that photo, my dog Charlie and I walked up to that table and I sat on the bench. Charlie just sniffed around.

I wanted to send the Horizon View Park photo to my friend Steve in Anchorage because he was moaning that Spring hadn’t arrived there yet.

I took my cap and sunglasses off while I sat there editing the photo and the text sent. Then we wandered off thru the park.

When Charlie and I headed for a walk the next afternoon. I grabbed my cap but my sunglasses weren’t nearby. No Big deal. We wandered off to our adventures.

Gordon has been wearing these glasses for years.
Over the next week, I looked everywhere for my sunglasses. I’ve been wearing them for years. I looked in cars, around the house, my office, all my pockets and packs, etc. I thought maybe I lost them at Rite-Aid or Safeway.

After a week, I was convinced they were lost. Doesn’t everyone hate losing something? Argh!

Time to shop for another pair….

But, more importantly, time for Charlie and me to head out for a walk, so we headed to the Horizon View park.

Could it be the lost sunglasses?
Wandering along our usual park sniffing paths, I spotted something sitting on a picnic table.

Hmmm… As i walked closer, that something looked like sunglasses. Went over to check them out.

Unbelievable! My sunglasses were sitting there. Yep it was them.

It seems that over the week the sunglasses were lost in the park grass. The grass was mowed.

Yes!
But... someone had found the glasses before mowing and left them on that table for days until I spotted them.

Think about this... nobody took them while they sat on the table waiting for me to wander by and find them.

Unbelievable!

Thank You Neighbors for Making My Day.

Gordon Snyder
