Shoreline Prop 1 would provide a park for the Briarcrest neighborhood

Sunday, April 4, 2021

Hamlin East / Briarcrest Park
Google Earth photo

In the Shoreline Parks Prop 1, there would be "Significant improvements at Brugger’s Bog, Hillwood, Richmond Highlands, Briarcrest (Hamlin East), and James Keough Parks."

By Diane Hettrick

As I recall, Briarcrest, which borders Lake Forest Park, was one of the last neighborhoods to be formed. When the Growth Management Act prompted Shoreline to incorporate, it also prompted Lake Forest Park to expand its borders.

In the no man's land between the two cities, decisions were being made by voting precinct and only the property owners could vote. Briarcrest ended up with a large section from 15th NE to Bothell Way at 145th. Going north, Briarcrest is only a few blocks wide.

Small but mighty, Briarcrest boasts an active neighborhood association.

Within a very short distance there are an elementary school, two high schools, and a middle school. There is a large, deeply forested park called South Woods, which was saved from development by Briarcrest activists.

The proposed park sits between Shorecrest to the south, Kellogg to the north, and Fircrest to the west.
Google Earth photo

But the only recreational space is a dogleg of Hamlin Park which lies between Shorecrest High School and Kellogg Middle School. There is no road and no parking. Access is through Shorecrest grounds.

There is a restroom and a couple of ballfields. Paths at the perimeter lead to 25th NE, Fircrest residential center, Shoreline Schools central kitchen and warehouse, and Kellogg.

Hamlin Park East / Briarcrest Park Planned improvements
  • Enhanced entrance from 25th Ave
  • New play area
  • New splash pad
  • New picnic shelter
  • New perimeter trail
  • Conversion of one of two ballfields into lawn

Prop 1 will be on the April 27 ballot in Shoreline.

The City estimates the annual property tax paid by the owner of a median valued home ($517,000) would be approximately $112 per year, or $9 per month. It would mean an increase of approximately $3 per month from the expiring park improvement bond.

Update: Added financial information

A map and a mural for the community

Wednesday, February 3, 2021

Erin Vikstrom

By Teresa Pape
Executive Director of the RBCA

It has become the talk of the town shared on various forms of social media, and now that the artist’s signature is in place, the Richmond Beach landmark map and mural are finished.

In December, the Richmond Beach Community Association (RBCA) Board began its search for an artist to decorate the panels around the Richmond Beach landmark map that was installed, at the old Wildhorse building located at the intersection of 20th NW and NW 195th Street, in the fall.

After advertising the project idea in the Richmond Beach Community Newspaper, local artist and Richmond Beach resident Erin Vikstrom was selected.

Erin began the process of priming and painting the wall in January. Erin said, some days it was very cold. She enjoyed meeting everyone who stopped to chat and inquire about the building.

Erin painted the mural with a design reminiscent of vintage National Park posters while incorporating bits of Native American art like the triangle pattern from the base of the welcome statue at the Saltwater Park.

She expressed that she feels lucky and honored to give back to the community. The mural has brought a new light to the forgotten corner. Students from King’s School were recently seen spending their community service day cleaning up around the building.

The landmark map and now accompanying mural has truly become a new way of bringing the community together.

Christmas Lights V - still in Ridgecrest

Monday, December 14, 2020

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Ok - for those of you who use recipes and work from lists - Steve has - to the best of his recollection - provided addresses for his photos, including for photos already published. (Hint: use the tag "christmas lights.")

For those of you who are a little more freeform - just go out after dark and drive around. I've never seen so many lavishly decorated houses as I have this year. It isn't just Ridgecrest.

It's a welcome push-back on what a very difficult year this continues to be.

What's the quote? Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. Thanks to all these people who are lighting lots of (virtual) candles!

Thursday, November 26, 2020

By Teresa Pape

On the Richmond Beach Community Association’s website, www.richmondbeachwa.org you can find a map of the traditional walking and running courses.

If outside exercise is not for you, jump on your treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike or stay cozy in bed and pick a route from the Richmond Beach TV YouTube Channel.

There are a few options to choose from. Experience walking the full route, walking the short cut, or have fun racing against our fast runner, Matthew. His GoPro views will make your head wobble as you gobble up the sights of Richmond Beach.

Thank you to the sponsors for this year’s event.

Help the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association continue their community work in spite of the pandemic

Please Donate! https://www.ridgecrestneighborhood.org/Donate

Every year the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association hosts several community-building events. This year they had none. These events are how they raise funds to be able to do good work in the community.

We do fun things like Outdoor Movie Night, the Ridgecrest Ice Cream Social and the Holiday Tree Lighting. But did you know we also pay off the school lunch debt at Ridgecrest Elementary, award scholarships to high school graduates and collect food donations for Hopelink?

Now they are doing a fund drive to be able to continue their good work.

We're 20% of the way to our goal after a very "distracting" week. But we're feeling optimistic now! Let's look forward to 2021 and think about what a difference we can make in our community - WORKING TOGETHER!

A member of the RNA board has stepped forward with a challenge gift of $2,500, and a business has stepped forward to do the same.

"This special gift is being made to help us continue operating beyond 2020, and even expand our work to help eliminate inequity in our neighborhood. Your support is needed to help us make a real difference in our neighborhood.

"For the next three weeks: every dollar you donate is worth 3X! Donate $25: RNA gets $75. Donate $50: Ridgecrest Neighborhood gets $150.

"We have three more weeks (end of November) to take advantage of the matches.

"Please donate now by going to: https://www.ridgecrestneighborhood.org/Donate

Week 5 of the 4-Corners fund raiser for Hopelink: sharing our good fortune with those that need help

Wednesday, November 4, 2020

Wow, we have been swept off our feet with the kindness and generosity of our neighbors.

People have stepped up with big hearted, unstinting donations to the 4-Corners fund raiser for Hopelink.
During the month of October we have received more than $12,000 dollars.

This is more than double the goal we set.

http://fundraise.hope-link.org/4Corners

This is a substantial amount to help distressed families in Shoreline. We are so proud to live here with such generous people.

There is still much need however, and we have decided to continue our fund drive through the holidays.

Hopelink’s shelves will need a lot more to see people through the dark months of winter and to help with holiday meals. Consider giving a small amount each month for a few months. It is a safe secure way to share our good fortune with those that need help now.

http://fundraise.hope-link.org/4Corners

This is a worthwhile endeavor and you can be part of it. Donate something, whatever you can, today.

4-Corners food drive triples goal - can you help them donate $15k to Hopelink?

Friday, October 23, 2020

4-Corners Hopelink Food Drive Week 4

We are pleased to report that we have doubled our original goal for the 4-Corners fundraiser for Hopelink. Our neighbors are giving so generously. What an impressive community we live in.

We have decided to try to reach triple our goal, or $15,000, by the end of October. Plus, we will leave this page open for donations through the holidays. If you haven’t helped yet, you can still help us reach our goal and fill Hopelink’s shelves this fall.

Click the link to give to Hopelink and help end food insecurity in Shoreline. The need is great as many are in reduced circumstances. Children need good nutrition to do well in school and you can help! This a safe and secure way to pitch in and contribute to a worthy cause.

This is a significant amount for us to donate and you can be part of it. Click the link and join in.

4-Corners.org is a 503c3 and a collaboration of the four neighborhoods whose corners meet at Richmond Beach Road and 8th Avenue NW:
  • Hillwood Neighborhood Association
  • Richmond Beach Community Association
  • Innis Arden Neighborhood
  • Richmond Highlands Neighborhood Association

4-Corners mission is to build community and support the neighborhoods.
