Bike Works' mission is to promote the bicycle as a vehicle for change to empower youth and build resilient communities. Every year, they collect thousands of bicycle donations and prevent them from entering the Puget Sound's waste streams.

The bikes collected through the bike drive in partnership with the Richmond Beach Community Association will be:
  • used as tools for teaching bicycle maintenance through their free and sliding-scale education programs for both youth and adults,
  • given away as a means of healthy and reliable transportation and recreation for community members who cannot afford a bike of their own through their Bikes-for-All bike giveaway program,
  • sold at an affordable price as a means of earned income for Bike Works' programs in their social enterprise Bike Shop,
  • or recycled.

Phantoms are on the loose in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood

Tuesday, October 13, 2020

Thanks to Ridgecrest resident, Jorien, "Phantom" baskets of goodies are making their way around the neighborhood.

If you receive one, you are in luck.

The goodies and basket are yours to keep - but you are encouraged to make up a basket and pass it, along with a copy of the instructions, to someone else in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood.

You can start a Phantom on your own so that more Phantoms are working their way around the neighborhood.

Instructions to make a Phantom:

Cost-wise, the one pictured here is about $12 with items from the dollar store. Find a container: basket, flower pot, cooking pan... whatever... and fill it with goodies. Possible items to put in a basket: dish towels, Halloween stuff, non-perishable food items, deck of cards, pretty napkins, chocolates, games, facemasks - virtually anything!

Print or copy the instructions and include them in your basket. Make a surprise drop-off anywhere in Ridgecrest. Does not have to be a neighbor or someone you know. If you receive a Phantom, take a photo and post on their Facebook page.

Enjoy! And thank you Jorien for this fun idea!

Note: You can create Phantoms in any neighborhood!

Once each week, Devra Gartenstein cooked up creative one-dish meals in the Patty Pan kitchen which were then delivered by BNA officers Sarah Kaye and Jean Hilde.

Recipients included low-income senior and disabled residents of King County Housing Authority's Paramount House located in South Briarcrest.

For years, Patty Pan's tamale and quesadilla tent has been a welcome destination at local farmers markets.

During the pandemic, Patty Pan is now focusing on home delivery of local products through their New Day grocery home-delivery co-op.

You can place weekly orders online here: https://shop.rethinkinggroceries.coop/

Help 4-Corners fill the food shelves at Hopelink

Friday, October 9, 2020

4-Corners.org continues its fund raising drive to fill Hopelink’s shelves.

The need is great.

Many are out of work and the children need good nutrition to help them focus on their new experience of online school.

Hopelink gets more benefit from dollars than it does from food donations. They can buy exactly what they need and there is no waste. They can buy in bulk and receive discounts that we cannot. There is no need for a list of items needed.

Cash works and this is a safe, no contact way for you to help. Please join us in this effort to fill Hopelink’s shelves and defeat hunger.

Please, click the link and give today!

4-Corners Fundraiser for Hopelink

Sunday, October 4, 2020

4-Corners.org is announcing the kick off of a month long fundraising drive for Hopelink

Running for the month of October, this is a no contact replacement for our annual food drive held at QFC.

For the last several years we have held a highly successful food drive for Hopelink at the QFC on Richmond Beach Road.

We averaged more than 2000 pounds of goods each year, all donated by our generous neighbors.

Because of the pandemic it is not possible to safely repeat this performance.

To protect our neighbors and volunteers we have opted to have a virtual fund raising drive instead. We are using Hopelink’s own fundraising service and have set a goal of $5000.

Please consider giving to help fight hunger in this time of great stress and need. It is a safe and private way to contribute when other means of donating have become difficult to impossible.

4-Corners organization unveils utility box art honoring four neighborhoods

Thursday, August 27, 2020

A design company employee completes installation of the 4-Corners art work on the utility box located where the 4 neighborhoods meet. Photo by HannahJunePhotography.com

4-Corners has completed the utility box project to represent the four neighborhoods that touch at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and Third Avenue NW: Richmond Beach, Hillwood, Richmond Highlands and Innis Arden.

“We are so pleased with this artistic addition to all our neighborhoods,” said Ann Erickson of Hillwood.

The design was created by the committee with assistance from neighbor Leah Malmos.

Thanks to a committee headed up by George Buswell of Richmond Beach and representatives from all the neighborhoods, the job got done.

Thanks also to
  • David Francis, City of Shoreline Arts Coordinator
  • Shoreline Arts Council for technical and monetary assistance.
  • Shoreline Historical Museum for photos from their collection.
  • Leah Malmos of Richmond Beach assisted greatly with the graphic design.

This collaboration by the four neighborhoods proves that things can get done during a pandemic. It took six months, a lot of patience, more than two hundred emails and several zoom meetings and was accomplished without a single face to face meeting.

4-Corners.org is non-profit 501c3 collaboration of these four neighborhoods to encourage community and consolidate resources.

The kids showed their creativity while having fun in the process. The masks are made of t-shirt material and they are perfect for adding something colorful to brighten your spirits.

If you need a mask, please help yourself to one at the little free pantry, 14511 25th Ave NE

Masks are available at the SUMC Little Free Pantry

If there are no masks at the time you visit, call 206-363-3040 to determine if someone is available to restock, or return the next day. Feel free to leave a donation of food or take what you need from the shelves.

Prelude to construction in Ridgecrest: City Light moving light poles

Friday, June 5, 2020

City Light crews doing a private job in Ridgecrest

Story and photos by Patricia Hale

Arden Homes purchased a property in Ridgecrest at 16539 8th Ave NE with a single family home.

They are redeveloping the property and plan to demolish the existing house, clear-cut the trees and build 16 homes that will sell for $1 - 1.5 million each.

In order to create a central driveway to the homes, they had to hire Seattle City Light to move a light pole. SCL crews were hard at work on Tuesday, June 2, 2020.

The pole you see is the one to be relocated. The truck and its equipment are drilling the 10’ deep hole for the new pole.

They use a combination of drilling, suctioning and water power flushing to suck up the soil in the 10 foot deep hole being drilled. Everything goes into the contamination containment tanks on the back of the truck to be appropriately disposed of.

No idea at this point how deep they had gone. The had already been drilling for 1 - 1/2 hours. Soil conditions, how much rock, hard pan and soil compaction all affect how long this could take.

Once the hole is complete, big rigs come in to lift the new pole that is lying on the side of the road to perpendicular and lower it into the hole and secure it to stand alone. After a couple of days, when the pole is set, they will place cross beams and huge insulators.

Then specialized crews come in for the “high wire” act of transferring the high voltage lines from the old pole to the new one.

I am not sure if the voltage of these particular lines but have heard it is 15,000 Kv (kilo volts) of power or more. (A reader commented that it is 120,000 volts)

I imagine these guys know what they are doing, as Seattle City Light is the nation's 10th largest public power system and first carbon-neutral utility, serving more than 410,000 customers.

Arden has two projects on the same street and had to have poles moved for both projects. City Light crews worked on both projects at the same time. You can see the second crew in the background.

New pole is in place. Workers were getting the high tension lines ready to be transferred to the new pole when they return.

RBCA Garden Tour continues to blossom

Sunday, May 31, 2020

Holloway House

By Teresa Pape, Executive Director
Richmond Beach Community Association

Despite the thunder and lightning on Saturday, the Richmond Beach Community Association’s annual Garden Tour can still be experienced and you’ll stay warm and dry.

Kris water fountain

A few weeks ago, when the in-person Garden Tour scheduled for Saturday, May 30 had to be cancelled in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the RBCA began working on a way to bring the gardens to the community virtually.

“We really wanted to find a way to showcase the gardens scheduled to be part of this year’s tour and we decided to experiment with something new.” said Teresa Pape, Executive Director of the Richmond Beach Community Association.

Sculpture in Amundson garden

The RBCA created a YouTube channel called RichmondBeachTV (all one word). There you will be able to view videos of eight gardens. Each video is as unique as the garden itself but still gives you a snapshot of some of the beautiful plants and flowers growing in our community.

Schnall view

The RBCA is also asking the community if they have a picture from their garden to email it to Teresa Pape at execdirector@richmondbeachwa.org. The photos will be used to create a new video to add original content to the channel.

All photos were taken by Teresa Pape and are part of the tour.

Tom Petersen is once again the recipient of this award for all the generosity, enthusiasm, knowledge, and talent he shares with the Richmond Beach Community and RBCA. Most recently we want to acknowledge all his time and effort with the historic street sign installation project, funded by the RBCA. Petersen is a stellar RBCA board member and community advocate.

Richmond Beach Community Association’s annual events looking different this year

Saturday, May 9, 2020

Unfortunately, with the City of Shoreline’s recent announcement of the citywide cancellation of summer events in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Richmond Beach Community Association (RBCA) will be unable to host some of their summer events this year including the Sandcastle Contest, Food Trucks and National Night Out.

“It pains us to announce the cancellation of our beloved summer events.” said Teresa Pape, Executive Director of the Richmond Beach Community Association.
“Families come together during the summer to build sandcastles, enjoy food trucks and get to know neighbors. We must follow the lead of the City of Shoreline because the health and safety of our community is a priority at this time.”

The RBCA is dedicated to bringing the community together, now more than ever.

“Things just need to look a bit different this year and that’s okay.” commented Pape.

The RBCA is experimenting with new ways of hosting favorite events. For example, the Garden Tour is going virtual this year.

“We didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity to showcase the wonderful gardens in our community.” said Pape.

The RBCA Board has formed an event planning committee, ready to create new ways of bringing the community together.
“We’ve got some ideas in the works and we may even create a new family favorite event.” commented Pape enthusiastically.

The Richmond Beach Community Association presents 15 events a year including the Strawberry Festival, Halloween Carnival, Turkey Day Fun Run and the Community Tree Lighting, however it is the smaller sized events like the Garden Tour, Sandcastle Contest, Food Trucks and National Night Out that make the Richmond Beach community so unique.

“We are all living in this new world and learning to adapt. I believe Richmond Beach is resilient and we will find ways to continue building community together.” shared Pape.

You can support the RBCA by becoming a member, renewing your membership or making an additional financial donation. The cost for an annual individual membership is just $20. Or if you simply want to donate to help support the RBCA, you can do so online through their webpage or by sending a check to P.O. Box 60186 Richmond Beach, WA 98160.

Briarcrest artist renews local kiosk for community

Monday, May 4, 2020

Reane Joy Pagdilao repainted the bench in
the Briarcrest Neighborhood Kiosk

Story and photos by Bettelinn Brown

Reane Joy Pagdilao, Artist, recently completed painting of the neighborhood Kiosk in Briarcrest

Reane Joy Pagdilao, a talented artist and musician, grew up in the Briarcrest Neighborhood of Shoreline, Washington. She graduated from Briarcrest Elementary School, Kellogg Middle School, Shorecrest High School, and in June 2019 Reane earned an Associate of Fine Arts Degree from Shoreline Community College.

During her teen years she traveled overseas to Japan and to her parent’s homeland in the Philippines.  During her travels Reane absorbed the culture and the arts, gaining knowledge and inspiration which would later influence her craft.

In her studies of fine arts at Shoreline Community College, Reane truly developed artistic knowledge. She has spent the last few years passing down her skills to young artists. Her work experience as an art instructor includes employment at Young Art at Alderwood Mall, AL Kirkland Art Studio and Creative Hands in Mill Creek.

Reane Joy Pagdilao used her artistic skills
to benefit the community she grew up in

Reane focuses her work on two dimensional designs.

Inspiration comes mostly from the nature of our observable universe. Images vary from the simplicity of how sunlight slips between the branches of a tree to the complexity of the wrinkles from a loved one’s eyes when they smile.

She works in many different mediums, charcoal, acrylic paint, oil paint, pencil, sumi ink, oil pastel and soft pastel. As an artist beginning to make her way in the world, Reane is developing and adapting many different art styles in her creations.

The intent of Reane’s message, goal and statement is to pass on the techniques she has learned and to provide motivation for a new, younger generation so that they might become more skilled than she and create masterpieces to last generations.
