Echo Lake Neighborhood Association (ELNA) meeting Tuesday - what do you think about the 1 Link light rail from Shoreline?

Sunday, September 15, 2024

ELNA meeting on Zoom, Tuesday September 17, 2024 from 7-9pm

Have you used the new light rail system, either to commute, shop, attend sporting events or even go to the airport?

Come to the ELNA meeting Tuesday to tell us about your experiences.

How did you get to the station? Walk? Take a bus? Try a Lime scooter?

Besides the obvious advantages of having a transit station that many of us can walk to, our neighborhood will be deeply affected by the 185th Station, in terms of traffic, safety of children taking school buses, and pedestrian safety.

Our guest speaker will be Jeff Raker, City of Shoreline Senior Transportation Planner.

Contact ELNA at ELNABoard@gmail.com to request the link for the meeting.

Hillwood Neighborhood Association project to restore Einstein Salmon now underway

Saturday, August 17, 2024

This explanatory poster is now attached to the vacant pole where the fiberglass salmon has been on the corner plaza at 3rd Ave NW & NW 195th St in Shoreline. The first salmon, the female Coho, will reappear there when it's restored. The male Coho will be next.

Hillwood Neighborhood Association (HNA) has begun the process of restoring the iconic fiberglass salmon installed on the corner plaza at Einstein Middle School at 3rd NW & NW 195th in Hillwood Neighborhood.

The fish are owned by Shoreline Schools who have given HNA permission to remove the fish and take them off-site for restoration work.

After safely moving the salmon to the work site, HNA board members Paul Lewing, Kim Brazell (with back to the camera), Jocelyn C. Asher and volunteer Rick Asher discuss the paint removal process. Photo by HannahJunePhotography

Research for this project began at the end of 2022.

In July of 2024, the City of Shoreline approved the funding for the restoration through a Neighborhood Mini-Grant. The project has now begun!

HNA board member Kim Brazell and volunteer Rick Asher transport the first salmon to a carefully cushioned van for the ride to where it will undergo cleaning, repairing, and painting.

Once the work is done, the salmon will be reinstalled and dedicated in a public ceremony in October 2024.

If you would like to help with the project, contact Hillwood at myHillwoodmail@gmail.com

The Hillwood webpage will be active later this month.

From the Museum: The Naming of North City

Monday, July 15, 2024

1940s View from North City SHM-1279

The Naming of North City

The business association, started by Tracy Owen and Russ Wacker et al, held a contest in about 1946 or ’47 to name the business district and surrounding community. People submitted names and the person who won was a waitress at the Dog House.

The grand prize was a radio, and the prize-winning name that she submitted was “North City,” as in a little city north of Seattle. Tracy Owen and Russ Wacker loved this - they realized that they could build a whole theme around this name.

These early organizers gave North City an identity and a flavor. It was little bit bawdy and a lot of fun and hard work - community members had to stick together and fight for what they wanted.

They got a Seafair parade going, a Seafair Princess, and a huge North City Sourdough Days carnival with a rodeo at the stables where St. Marks is today. They had fireman contests, 4H contests, dog show, and other activities that everyone could enjoy.

North City Neighborhood Association leads a successful community cleanup

Sunday, May 19, 2024

A little rain didn't stop these North City neighbors from cleaning up

This past weekend, the North City Neighborhood Association (NCNA) demonstrated the power of community spirit and stewardship with a highly successful neighborhood cleanup event.

Armed with gloves, litter bags, and enthusiasm, our volunteers tackled three designated zones within North City.

The result? Two large piles of collected refuse, neatly bagged and ready for the city's scheduled pickup on Monday. These piles stand not only as a testament to the trash removed but also as monuments to the collective effort of our dedicated community members.

The cleanup event was organized by the NCNA and supported by the city's provision of clean up kits.  The enthusiasm of the volunteers proved that when a community comes together, great things happen.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the City of Shoreline for their support, and most importantly, to every individual who contributed their time and energy. The success of this event has laid the foundation for future cleanups and has strengthened the ties within our neighborhood.

The NCNA is proud to foster such initiatives that enhance the quality of life in North City. We invite residents to stay engaged and to join us in future efforts to maintain the beauty of our neighborhood.

Where the sidewalks end on 180th street

Sunday, May 12, 2024

A photo by Kevin Atkinson, Treasurer, North City Neighborhood Association,
shows a pedestrian walking in the street where the sidewalk ends on 180th

By Oliver Moffat

On the 2nd Thursday of each month, the North City Neighborhood Association hosts a meetup at Monka Brewing Company to talk about local issues and make friends.

When the neighbors meet, one topic that is sure to come up is traffic safety. And the section of road that comes up most frequently is where the sidewalks end on 180th street in North City.

A map by Mark Notermann, Co-Chair of the North City Neighborhood Association, shows the location of apartments and condos (yellow), the light rail station (red), recently completed sidewalks (green), and unfunded sidewalk projects (blue)

Whether walking, biking, driving or taking the bus, 180th is the primary road residents of apartments in the neighborhood will take to reach the 185th street station.

There are two particularly troubling gaps in the sidewalk along NE 180th Street between 15th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE that force pedestrians to walk in the roadway.

A photo shows where pedestrians must use the road on 180th street

That section of 180th is on a hill with poor visibility. And that block of 180th is the location of a school bus stop, the fire station, and later this year Metro’s 348 will add frequent all-day and all-night service to the street.

A map shows the locations where the sidewalks end on 180th street
forcing pedestrians into the road

The city includes 180th in the estimated $80 million worth of road improvements for the 185th Street Multimodal Corridor Strategy.

But given staffing shortages and funding constraints, the city says it could be more than a decade before the 185th project would get the green light.

A map shows the five segments of the 185th Street Multimodal Corridor Strategy with estimated costs; North City residents have raised safety concerns about segment “E” - 180th between 15th and 10th

The city’s proposed Transportation Improvement Plan breaks the 185th project into five different segments labeled “A” through “E”.

Section “E” would build sidewalks on 180th between 10th and 15th and would cost about $5 million.

But the section that North City residents are most concerned about is between 12th and 15th - which might be much less expensive.

A photo by Kevin Atkinson, Treasurer, North City Neighborhood Association,
shows a wheelchair user on 180th

North City residents have asked the city to separate the west-side and east-side segments of the 185th project in the Transportation Improvement Plan.

Separating segments “D” and “E” would be consistent with the 145th and 175th corridor projects and would allow city engineers to consider the priority and costs of the North City segments separately from the west-side segments.

On May 20, 2024 the Shoreline city council will vote on adoption of the Six-Year Transportation Improvement Plan.
