Message from Lake Forest Park: disappointed about cancelling National Night Out

Wednesday, October 7, 2020

Dear Lake Forest Park residents,

Tonight would have been National Night Out here in LFP.

We at the Police Department are extremely disappointed this event had to be cancelled. We did not want to let this day go unacknowledged so I, along with your Mayor and City Administrator, got together and created a video message to all of you.

Know that our entire staff misses seeing all of you, and we are very much looking forward to next year.

National Night Out in Lake Forest Park 2019
2020 will certainly look different

National Night Out has been held annually on the first Tuesday in August.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lake Forest Park Police department is following the recommendation that all National Night Out 2020 areas celebrate on October 6th, the first Tuesday in October.

As we monitor the pandemic and steps taken by the governor, this could change. Stay tuned!

National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Build a Talent Bank for your neighborhood

Thursday, July 23, 2020

From the City of Shoreline

During emergencies (like a pandemic or an earthquake) sometimes the people you will rely on most live right in your neighborhood. In the last few months, you may have gotten to know your neighbors better than you did before.

On many Shoreline blocks, neighbors have reached out to help each other, offering to pick up groceries or check with people who live alone. They have helped build resilient neighborhoods, ones that can survive, adapt, and thrive in the face of change.

In years past, on the second Tuesday in August, Shoreline neighbors have come together to celebrate National Night Out. It is a time to block off streets, share food, and get to know each other better. Unfortunately, this year we won’t be able to do that. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t still work to build resilient neighborhoods.

To help neighborhoods become more resilient, we have created a Talent Bank Worksheet Template available at shorelinewa.gov/NNO. Work with your neighbors to create a talent bank to inventory your block’s combined skills and resources.

  • Is someone in your neighborhood a medical professional?
  • Is someone tech savvy or good with power tools?
  • Are there any CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) members on your block?
  • Are there people that can speak multiple languages that could help with interpretation or translations?

Continuing to maintain social distance, talk with your neighbors when you see them outside. Or, if you have contact information, invite them to join the talent bank. Not all your neighbors may want to share personal information or be involved. Please respect their choice.

The City supports building deeper connections at the neighborhood level to create a safer, more responsive community.

Once information is shared, make copies of the completed worksheet so every household can have one. These lists are confidential. They should not be distributed to anyone other than those who have agreed to participate.

City staff, police, fire, city council, neighborhood representatives spread out over Shoreline on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 to try to reach as many NNO parties as possible.

Chief Harden: National Night Out a great success in Lake Forest Park

LFP officers with talking points and handouts
prepare to attend NNO events in LFP

From LFP Police Chief Mike Harden

On Tuesday night, August 6, 2019 Lake Forest Park Police Department and our community celebrated National Night Out.

It was a great success and I want to extend my gratitude from the department, to those that attended any gatherings in your neighborhood. This year was the largest yet, and the feedback back from the police staff was very positive.

Talking points were given out to the officers for this event.

We had 38 neighborhood gatherings. I am very pleased to say that a police officer visited every gathering that made the request.

With a small staff serving a population of over 13,000 this is no small feat. According to the registrations, there were 938 adults, 141 teens, and 370 kids.

During the event, the officers did have four calls for service consisting of a drug related call, animal complaint, parking complaint, and a domestic violence call. Yet, the staff still attended all the NNO events. I am proud of our staff and how they represented the city.

As many spoke about last night, the City Staff, Public Works, the Fire Department and the Police Department work hard to keep this city’s character, charm, low crime rates, and excellent customer service.

We depend on our neighborhoods to be the eyes and ears for the police department. We also want our neighborhoods to work together to keep crime low and depend on our neighbors in times of emergency and crisis.

If you see an officer, thank them for the work they do. It does mean a lot to them because a large portion of their jobs can be demanding, stressful, and very critical.

I want to personally thank Sgt. Lehman, Det. Troxell, Becca Clinton, and Casey Krzyminski for coordinating this large event. I want to thank all the staff that made visits to the gatherings, Ofc. Parrish, Ofc. Coleman, Ofc. Carswell, Sgt. Becker, Ofc. Ward, Ofc. Benson, Sgt. Adams, Ofc. Wieghat, Ofc. Zelenock, Ofc. Teschlog, and Ofc. Beard. Thanks to the dayshift officers staying over and the night shift officers for coming in early.

Lastly, I want to thank Mayor Johnson and Phil Hill for attending the events with me last night. Great representatives from the city and we all had a great time.

In 2018, more than 75 block parties were held in Shoreline.

This year it is on Tuesday, August 6, 2019.

Whether this is already a long-standing tradition on your block, or if you have been thinking about getting to know your neighbors, we encourage you to participate this year.

NNO party in LFP
From LFP Police Chief Mike Harden

We are all excited about the National Night Out event and hopefully we have great weather.

NNO is a series of nationwide celebrations to give neighbors an opportunity to get together in a setting close to home.

NNO is also an opportunity for officers to interact with residents in a positive, relaxed and informal way.

Officers and residents often use NNO as an opportunity to communicate about neighborhood concerns and crime prevention tips.

There are many different types of NNO events - it all depends on the neighborhood. Some residents host block parties. Sometimes events are built around a barbecue, ice cream social or potluck dinner. Some simply gather in their cul-de-sac and socialize while their children play. Any gathering that gives neighbors a chance to step outside their homes and talk fits the bill!

Representatives from the LFP Police Department attend neighborhood events throughout the city to answer questions about law enforcement and share effective strategies for fighting crime in our neighborhoods. Officer involvement depends on availability.

For 2019, we have registered over 40 events. I have created an NNO map for our LFP community.

If you are thinking of joining a party, the contact information is listed. The title of the party gives the location details. So, find your house location and look for an event in the area. Come out and meet your neighbors.

We are a smaller police department, but we will do our best with the on-duty staff to visit many of these locations. Understand that if an officer does come to your party, they will be limited in time, as they will be visiting as many parties as possible.

Have a great Tuesday night!

Lake Forest Park Summertime Reflections: National Night Out

Neighbors were grateful for the air conditioning as well
as the potluck feast at the Kassover's home

Text and Photos by Donna Hawkey

August National Night Out is a favorite for many Lake Forest Park residents with 37 neighborhood get-togethers taking place on Tuesday, August 7, 2018.

Ken and Philippa Kassover host National Night Out at their home which sits on old Circle Drive but is now named 47th Ave.

Neighbors that have lived on this same street for over forty years recall the old name fondly and say they “wish we could change it back to Circle Drive.”

National Night Out host and Lake Forest Park City Council Member Phillippa Kassover chatting with neighbors.

Host Ken Kassover, right

New neighbors were warmly welcomed and some apologized for either their loud barking dogs or for building development noise taking place.

Getting to know something about the people who live on your street is empowering and especially in a time of need or emergency. These neighbors have a list called “Circle Drive Need” just in case of one.

Looks like the dog is enjoying the dinner, too.

Ken Kassover also reminded his neighbors about Crime Watch which is a service sponsored free by the LFP Police Department. Ken volunteers for Crime Watch and says that vacation house checking can be accessed by any property owner living in the City of LFP.

Captain Paul Armbrust of the LFP Police Department says that partnering on National Night Out helps make “Lake Forest Park one of the safest cities in the Puget Sound region. With the resident’s eyes and ears, it is an incredible force multiplier partnership with the police. Neighbors that know each other can work together very effectively when necessary.”

Photo Courtesy of Lake Forest Park Police Department

Over 37 National Neighborhood Night Out events were held throughout Lake Forest Park.

The police have a call to action. “If you see something, say something, and this will help us to continue to drive down crime in this great City,” says Captain Armbrust.

The police have always been an encouraging partner in National Night Out which began in 1984 with neighbors just turning on their porch lights and sitting in front of their houses.

According to the National Night Out website, "The first annual event involved 2.5 million neighbors across 400 communities. Today, 38 million neighbors in 16,000 communities across the nation take part in National Night Out which has transformed into many different types of community gatherings."
Information about scheduling a neighborhood Night Out Against Crime in LFP here.

This type of relationship building creates trust between residents and the police as everyone gains better understanding of the community and its needs.

37 Lake Forest Park block parties for National Night Out crime prevention

Thursday, August 9, 2018

Night Out parties in Lake Forest Park
By Steve Sutton, Chief LFP Police

National Night Out Against Crime Tuesday night was a great success!

There were 37 parties this year! The map of this year’s parties shows that we have the City covered.

Officers and City staff were able to make it to every party again this year.

We talked to the community about several topics:

Residential Burglaries are down 40% year to date. Keep calling in suspicious behavior, get an alarm, video surveillance equipment, and communicate with your neighbors when you gone. It works.

Mail and Package thefts are on the rise. Use Amazon Drop boxes in the area, have things shipped to a business, and get those packages off the porch ASAP.

The City has installed six active speed signs throughout the City as one component of the Safe Streets Project- we always hear about neighborhood speed issues, we are working on several traffic calming locations now. Staffing is a problem in the PD (we are three positions down), so be patient with us, we hear you.

City Administrator Phillip Hill and Mayor Jeff Johnson came out with us and passed out information regarding the Town Center Visioning project. That flyer is here, please read it and participate - your voice is needed.

Thank you LFP, your support has been great!

National Night Out is Tuesday

It's too late to close your street or get a fire truck but it's not too late to hold a potluck on your front lawn and invite all your neighbors.

There are a number of large National Night Out parties planned for Tuesday evening, but the real purpose of the event is crime prevention by knowing the neighbors on your street.

Photos: National Night Out gets bigger and better every year

Thursday, August 3, 2017

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Steven H. Robinson

There were 74 registered block parties in Shoreline for National Night Out on Tuesday, August 1. A few might have slipped through without registering, if they didn't want to close a street.

I didn't get a count, but Lake Forest Park has embraced NNO for years.

It's fun to see all the new groups forming. The Northridge neighborhood in Echo Lake did an all-neighborhood party for the first time. The well-established block parties, like the Ridgecrest group that Steve photographed, just seem to get bigger and better every year.

The gatherings are a great place for people who want to maintain contact. For example, the Ridgecrest party had firefighters with a truck, police officers, including Community Outreach Officer Paula Bates, politician Jill Brady, Schools Superintendent Rebecca Miner and her husband, and probably others I didn't see.

There were balloons, play tables for the little ones, lots of good food, and a casual, laid-back atmosphere where people talked and got to know each other.

And that's the whole point. If you know your neighbors, you know what is normal and usual. You know who lives in the house. You know if they are planning to move - so you call 911 when you see someone moving all the furniture out of the house. And if you are wrong and they are just getting new furniture, the police officers will be very courteous and let them know how lucky they are to have such caring neighbors.

Plan to have a block party next year. You don't have to do anything elaborate - just set up some tables and have a potluck on the street.

Host a block party for National Night Out - Tuesday, August 1

2016 National Night Out party in Shoreline

National Night Out is based on the concept that when neighbors know each other, the community is safer. Single blocks organize a potluck which is held on the street or a front yard on August 1 each year.

In Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, police and fire units do their best to visit every registered party, interacting with the neighbors and letting the kids see the fire trucks up close.

Whether this is already a long-standing tradition on your block, or if you have been thinking about getting to know your neighbors, consider participating this year.

Registering your party is easy and city staff will help you with the paperwork to close your street.

In Lake Forest Park, the police are the contact:

Registration Forms are available at the Police Department or online:
NNO Coordinator: Casey Krzyminski
Lake Forest Park Police Department
206-364-8216 x 523
Email: casey@ci.lake-forest-park.wa.us

In Shoreline, the Office of Neighborhoods is the contact:

Registration is required for all parties, including permitted events involving street closures. By registering, we count you in Shoreline's official Night Out Crime Prevention efforts and map your event. Whether you hold your event on the official Night Out evening or you choose a different date, these simple steps will make your registration process quick and easy.
  • A permit is usually required if you hold an activity in the street or close the street. The permit application for street closure on NNO is available online. Contact City of Shoreline Permit Services at 206-801-2500 regarding requirements.
  • Registration and permit applications must be received by Tuesday, July 18 for August 1 events. Meeting this deadline will also ensure you are in the drawing for either a police or fire crew visit, if possible.
For questions contact Constance Perenyi at 206-801-2253.

Night Out parties - fun, food, fire engines and talking to neighbors

Roads were closed so neighbors could meet
and children could play on National Night Out
153rd and Ashworth

The annual Night Out Against Crime block parties offer a lot to participants.

This little guy got to drive a fire truck
and his dad took pictures to prove it!
N 152nd and Densmore

At their core, the simple goal is for neighbors to meet each other. People who know each other are more likely to know when something is wrong on the street and more likely to tell the police their suspicions.

For one night, kids can play safely in the street
and neighbors talk to each other
N 161st and Stone

All that is usually required of neighbors is to bring a potluck dish, show up, eat, and talk to people.

Not everyone blocked off the street.
A front yard and driveway will do just as well.

Those who register their parties get visits from local leaders.

Neighbors are talking to each other -
and to the City Manager and Shoreline Police Chief
You never know who you'll meet at a NNO party
NE 158th and 11th

Steven H. Robinson got to half a dozen block parties Tuesday evening and managed to find a fire engine and crew, a city councilmember, a school board director, the city manager, chief of police, and superintendent of public schools!
