Guardian One to visit block parties for National Night Out

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

Shoreline Guardian One flight path for NNO

National Night Out Against Crime is tonight, Tuesday, August 4th.

Expect to see residential street closures, with picnic tables in the middle of the street, and groups of people gathering.

Police in both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park have vowed to try their best to visit every registered party and Fire won't be too far behind them.

King County Guardian One helicopter is scheduled to fly over every block party in Shoreline.

National Night Out is an opportunity for neighbors to meet each other. A street where people know each other is a place where it's easy to know when something is out of the normal. For example, if you know that your neighbor is not moving, you will be more likely to ask police to check when you see people emptying the contents of their house.

For tonight, it's about potato salad and a pleasant evening.

A Night Out brings neighbors together

Sunday, August 10, 2014

Shoreline Officer Steve Perry told
stories to the kids at Shoreline Park
All over the area on Tuesday evening, streets were closed, tables were set up on lawns, and neighbors gathered together for the National Night Out Against Crime.

The premise is simple. Neighbors who know each other watch out for each other. The event helps neighbors meet and get to know each other. This year’s focus was on burglary prevention, special events within the city, and communication.

Shoreline had 51 registered block parties and Lake Forest Park had 23. There may have been more - those who didn't need to close a street and didn't let the police know about their event.

Lake Forest Park Police made it to 22 of the 23 parties. Shoreline sent Police Officers, City staff members, and the Mayor and made it to all 51 parties.

National Night Out is a national campaign that brings neighbors together to talk about crime prevention within their neighborhoods and within the city.

Shoreline Officer Perry had a rapt audience of small children at the Shoreline Park party organized by Shawn Van Horn.

Echo Lake Board member Nan Colton reports that "He was informative and entertaining. Police car lights were flashing all the time, making the whole experience very real."

Ray Webber brought BBQ pork ribs with special sauce

One of the best-kept secrets of Night Out is just how good the food is. All the neighbor Foodies bring out their best stuff. If you are lucky enough to have a restaurant on your block, such as Patty Pan in Briarcrest, or a BBQ king like Ray Webber, so much the better.

For information about forming block watches and being prepared for next year's Night Out, contact your police department.

The Burke Ave Blockwatch got a permit
and had dinner in the street

The City of Shoreline says: Organize a block party, ice cream social or barbecue on your block!

National Night Out Against Crime is designed to generate participation in Block Watch and other crime prevention programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and watching out for each other.

The City of Shoreline supports residents organizing a National Night Out event in their neighborhood and wants to make it easy.

A right-of-way permit is required if you want to request a street closure for a Block Watch party or National Night Out event. The permit is free for events sponsored by formal neighborhood associations. Contact Shoreline Permit Services at 206-801-2523 regarding Right-of-Way Special Event Permit requirements or download a National Night Out/Block Party permit application. When you apply for a permit you will receive:

  • A free National Night Out giveaway item (while supplies last).
  • An event packet with basic information about Block Watch, emergency readiness and neighborhood associations.
  • Visits from a representative of Shoreline Police, City of Shoreline, or Emergency Management (availability dependent on emergency calls).

Events that don't require a street closure can register too, and organizers will receive an event packet and visits from City staff, police or fire. To register, call or email Shoreline Neighborhoods Coordinator Rosie O'Brien-Ochs at 206-801-2256.

Lake Forest Parks' Night Out Against Crime, Aug 6

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Join with us in celebration of National Night Out on August 6, 2013. National Night Out is “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” a coordinated effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie, and generally to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

This is the 30th anniversary of the event. In Lake Forest Park, neighbors have gathered for the last 16 years primarily to get to know each other and share ideas. Often it happens over a potluck dinner: sometimes at a house but more often in a block-party in the street.

Our Police Department encourages every neighborhood to have some sort of get-together in support of this national event, because knowing your neighbors is one of the strongest crime deterrents a neighborhood and community can have. This year, Police Chief Steve Sutton and his staff will attend as many events as possible.

If you are planning or want to have an event, contact Crime Prevention Coordinator Casey Krzyminski 206-957-2880. Registration forms and more information are available on the City web-site or at the police department. Additional information about the National Event.

Night out with the neighbors

One table at the large Wallingford Ave block watch party

By Diane Hettrick

The Night Out Against Crime block parties were all organized on the same idea - if neighbors know each other and know what is normal on the street, they will know when something doesn't seem right and call the police to check it out.

But the block watch parties were all different. Some seemed like a gathering of friends - neighbors who already knew each other and were enjoying the party. Others had 'getting to know you' conversations. I overheard phrases like "Now, which house is yours?" "Are those your children?" "Where do you pick up your mail?"

Some had fabulous food, others kept it simple with hot dogs and hamburgers.

Lisa Haynes of Blue Star with the Shoreline Bicycle patrol

Then there was the out and out party at Blue Star Construction, located on N 200th at the head of Echo Lake. They win the prize for the most number of extroverts, most apparently employees - but everyone was welcome. City staff, city council, Jazz Walk organizers, Shoreline Police, everybody showed up at Blue Star - except the fire department. "Where are they?" said Lisa, We had a fire truck here last year!"

Blue Star has only a driveway onto N 200th, but a view of most of Echo Lake Park and a sweeping view of Echo Lake.

When organizing block watches, police say, you don't have to follow the formal street block. Consider the line of sight from each house. If you have a section where five or six backyards meet, have a block watch with those homes, even if they are on four different streets. Belong to more than one block watch - one for your front yard, one for your back yard. Have a block watch for your apartment building, or one floor of condos. The point is to watch out for each other and prevent or stop crime before it happens.

Night Out Against Crime - Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Tuesday night, August 2, 2011, neighborhood block watches take back the streets - with neighborhood gatherings and potluck dinners on the street.

Many have obtained permits to close their street for their party and set up tables in the middle.

A 2010 event in the Echo Lake neighborhood of Shoreline
This National event is designed to foster the formation of block watches and to help people to know their neighbors. Neighbors who know each other and watch out for each other are the best crime deterrent there is. Neighbors can watch over vacant houses and be alert to unusual activity.

Shoreline Police Chief Dan Pingrey says "We can't have officers on every street. We depend on the community to let us know when something seems wrong - so we can check it out for them."

Lake Forest Park Police Chief Dennis Peterson and the Duty Officer are going to try to visit every block watch party in LFP.

The fire departments will be out, too, visiting block watches in Shoreline (Shoreline Fire) and LFP and Kenmore (Northshore Fire).

Night out against crime, Tuesday, August 3

Formal and informal Block Watches all over Shoreline and Lake Forest Park will be holding block parties on the evening of Tuesday, August 3 for the annual Night Out Against Crime. The parties are an opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other a little better. Neighbors who know each other are usually more pro-active about questioning the presence of strangers on the street and on their neighbors' property.

Lake Forest Park residents can still register their parties with the City and block off their street. If you are interested in hosting or organizing a party in your own neighborhood, contact Karen Howell, National Night Out Coordinator, for help in planning your event. 206-364-8216 x 547, Fax:206-361-8156, or email.

The registration form, special event permit to block off the street, as well as flyer and invitation templates are available on the city webpage.

Police Officers will be available to attend events upon request.

In Shoreline, it is too late to get a permit to block off the street, but parties can still be held on private property. Nora Smith, Neighborhood Coordinator, will help anyone with planning. She can be contacted at 206-801-2253 or email.
