Love is a delicious and vicious curse
Once you hit bliss – then you hit reverse

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change
Seattle Musical Theatre
April 27 to May 20, 2012
Magnuson Park
7120 62nd Ave NE
Seattle, WA 98115

Seattle Musical Theatre closes out their 11-12 “Musicals through the Decades” season with the 80’s and 90’s nostalgia piece, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Filled with the timeless hilarity of Mars vs. Venus dynamics, the production follows four actors playing more than 40 roles through the three stages of relationship: courtship, marriage and family life.

Running for 12 years Off-Broadway, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change has been described as “Seinfeld set to music”. The book and lyrics by Joe Dipietro and music by Jimmy Roberts have inspired marriage proposals from audience members across the country. Each vignette showcases characters ranging from 4 years old to over 80, ready to break into song about everything from knowing how to flirt (“A Stud and a Babe”), to grownup duties such as freezing leftovers (“Marriage Tango”). Director Noel Barbuto assures audience members that “we hit most of the iconic and epic moments in one’s life”. Seattle Musical Theatre’s production explores the whole relationship cycle with humor, emotion and insight that will leave you laughing out loud and wiping tears from your eyes.

The talented artistic team and cast is filled with local talented veterans and younger artists bringing an exciting energy to the production. I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change opens Friday April 27th and closes on May 20th. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm with a single Thursday evening performance on May 17th at 7:30. The production is rated PG-13.

Leapin’ Lizards! All Annie, All the Time - Broadway Bound production has local students in cast

Sunday, January 1, 2012

Young actors from across Seattle are currently in rehearsal for Broadway Bound Children’s Theatre’s production of Annie. Performances will run Friday, January 13 through Sunday, January 22 at the Broadway Performance Hall on Capitol Hill. Annie is a well-loved classic musical set in Depression-Era New York City.

Among the actors participating are several students from the Shoreline area
  • Anna Ostrem
  • siblings Jonah and Simone Beres
  • sisters Elizabeth and Madeleine Hickman
  • Charlotte Berkman

Broadway Bound is literally brimming with orphans. The fall season includes two incarnations: the full version of Annie and a slightly shortened version, Annie, Jr. Encompassing six casts and including two hundred young actors from age five to sixteen, this fall has truly been all Annie, all the time.

Broadway Bound will be the last Seattle-area theatre to present Annie before it makes its return to Broadway in late 2012, according to the Musical Theatre International website. Once it returns to Broadway, it will become unavailable to other theatres.
Themes present in Annie are especially poignant in the current social and political climate. Much like today, people in the 1930’s were struggling with unemployment, poverty, and homelessness. These struggles are emphasized in the play in the song entitled “We’d Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover.” The citizens of a “Hooverville” (a shanty-town named for Hoover) sarcastically express their appreciation to Herbert Hoover for their current situation.
Annie is supported by a phenomenal production staff. It is directed by Founder and Executive Artistic Director Jimmy Nixon. He is joined by Choreographer Danny Long, Musical Director Katherine Strohmaier, Lighting Designer Jesse Prince, and Scenic Designer Norm Spencer.

This marks the second production in Broadway Bound’s sixteenth season, which began in December with their remount of 13. The season will continue in February with the presentation of Annie, Jr. and culminate in June with performances of Seussical the Musical and RENT: School Edition.

Tickets to Annie are $17.50 and are available online or by phone at 1-800-838-3006. For more information about Annie and Broadway Bound, visit the website.

A dazzling love letter from the 1950s, Pajama Game kicks off the Seattle Musical Theatre's 34th Season

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

See if love can beat the odds in this dazzling love letter from the 1950s, presented by the Seattle Musical Theatre, (formerly Civic Light Opera) located in Magnuson Park, 7120 62nd Ave NE.

Opening September 9 and running through October 2, performances are Friday through Sunday, with one Thursday night offering. Tickets are $35-$40 with special rates for seniors, students and group sales. Tickets can be purchased online  or by calling the box office at 206-363-2809.

The Pajama Game originally showcased the talents of Jerome Robbins, George Abbott, Bob Fosse and Harold Prince - four of the greatest talents in the history of American musical theatre. Although at first glance a relatively straightforward, conventional musical comedy, The Pajama Game proved to be one of the best musicals of the '50s, establishing the Broadway careers of Prince, Fosse, and songwriters Richard Adler and Jerry Ross.

Under the initial direction of George Abbott and Jerome Robbins, The Pajama Game won the 1955 Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Choreographer. And the recent revival in 2006, highlighting Harry Connick Jr., took home the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical, proving the enduring appeal of this classic American musical.
Set in a Cedar Rapids, Iowa pajama factory, the musical follows the journey of Babe Williams and Sid Sorokin, two employees in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory. Babe, the head of the union’s Grievance Committee, and Sid, the factory’s new foreman, must negotiate a labor dispute and a burgeoning romantic relationship at the same time.
Add to this the antics of other wacky characters and a timeless score featuring such songs as “Steam Heat,” “Hey There,” and “Hernando’s Hideaway,” and you have a musical that presents a serious message about worker’s rights, livable wages and corporate greed while never forgetting to entertain. The Pajama Game is also a snapshot of the way women in the workplace were perceived in the 1950’s.

Destinations: Brigadoon opens at the Snoqualmie Falls Forest Theater

Friday, July 29, 2011

The Snoqualmie Falls Forest Theater becomes Brigadoon, the mythical Scottish village that comes to life only one day each century. The lush greenery and deep woods location of the theatre provide an ideal stage setting for Lerner and Loewe's classic musical.

Known for its colorful pageantry, swinging kilts, bonnie lasses, bagpipes, and Highland flings, it tells the story of two American travelers who stumble upon the quaint little town just as a wedding is about to start, bringing romantic and other more serious complications. The hauntingly beautiful score features such standards as, "Almost Like Being in Love."

Performances continue Saturdays at 2 and 7 pm, Sundays at 2 pm through August 28, 2011.  Order tickets on the web page. A limited number of show tickets are usually also available on show day at the box office, but reservations are strongly recommended.

They sell barbeque dinners, with some vegetarian entrees, right on site. It is necessary to reserve in advance - they rarely have leftovers.

The theatre is in a beautiful location in the woods at 36800 SE David Powell Road, Fall City, Washington

Musicals Through the Decades: Seattle Musical Theatre announces its 2011-2012 Season

Saturday, May 28, 2011

Coming off of a record season for audience attendance, Seattle Musical Theatre (SMT) is pleased to announce their 34th season. Capturing some of the best offerings from 20th century decades, SMT is offering a slate of shows sure to appeal to those who love the classics and clamor for family entertainment, as well as those who like to see something less well-known or a really hot dance show.

Pajama Game - September 9, 2011 to October 2, 2011
Beginning the season is a dazzling love letter from the 1950’s, the Tony Award Winning The Pajama Game. This classic has all the important musical theatre elements of romantic tensions, beautiful ballads and big dance numbers, including the unforgettable “Steam Heat” number. However, its theme of conflict between management and the union at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory is as relevant today as it was 60 years ago. The Pajama Game opens September 9th and plays each weekend through October 2nd.

Hairspray -  November 11, 2011 to December 11, 2011
Prepare yourself for some of the craziest dancing and biggest hair ever seen on the SMT stage in their second offering, Hairspray. Filled with the explosive energy of Baltimore in the 1960’s, this winner of eight Tony awards gives a hilarious and emotionally poignant tribute to the courage needed to break down the walls that separate us. Hairspray opens on that special date 11/11/11 and runs through December 11th, with no performances over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

A Chorus Line - February 10, 2012 to March 4, 2012
One of the longest running musicals of all time, A Chorus Line will captivate audiences as they experience the power of the human experience in our struggle to fulfill our dreams. In the 1970’s, A Chorus Line helped launched a new era of musical theatre by inviting the audience into the story of seventeen dancers personal lives through charismatic performances, passionate dancing and iconic songs. This “one singular sensation” won nine Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize. The number “What I Did for Love” has gone on to be a theme song for performing artists everywhere. A Chorus Line opens February 10th, 2012 and plays though March 4th.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change - April 27, 2012 to May 20, 2012
Relationships – in all of their humor, agony and those moments when its unclear whether to laugh or cry – inspired the closing show for the season, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. This production, infused with the style and music from the 1980’s, tackles the ridiculousness, terror and intimacy of dating and commitment with a truthfulness that will leave you rolling in the aisles with laughter and quietly wiping away tears. I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is an actor’s favorite for its challenging roles. While delighting audiences for years on the East Coast and California, this jewel has been a rare offering in the Puget Sound area. The SMT production plays April 27th through May 20th, 2012.

Plans for next season
SMT hopes to continue to enhance the audience experience after their current season which had subscribers commenting that shows were “outstanding”, “the best they had seen” and better than many productions they had seen in New York. The company will be investing over the summer in improving technical elements and enhancing the lobby. All artistic and technical talent hired for this season will continue SMT’s mission of providing opportunities for local artists to perfect their crafts. Many SMT performers have gone on to fruitful professional theatre careers.

Tickets
Seattle Musical Theatre (formerly Civic Light Opera) is conveniently located in Magnuson Park, at 7120 62nd Ave NE . Performances are Friday through Sunday, with one Thursday night offering on the closing weekends. Tickets are $35-$40 with special rates for seniors, students and group sales. The roaring 20s are back at the Seattle Musical Theatre

The Man in the Chair, with musical characters
Seattle Musical Theatre presents the first Seattle-based production of The Drowsy Chaperone, February 11 - March 5, at their theatre in Sandpoint Magnuson. Magnuson Park, 7210 62nd Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115. Friday-Saturdays at 7:30 pm, Sundays at 2 pm, Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 pm.

The Drowsy Chaperone is the tale of a modern day musical theater maven, known simply as "Man in Chair." To chase his blues away, he drops the needle on his favorite LP - the 1928 madcap musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. As his hi-fi crackles, the musical magically bursts to life on-stage. We learn the tale of the pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up showbiz to get hitched, and her producer's attempts to sabotage her impending nuptials. Hilarious antics ensue with her chaperone, the debonair groom, the dizzy chorus girl, the Latin lover and a pair of gangsters masquerading as pastry chefs. Man in Chair's love of The Drowsy Chaperone speaks to anyone who has ever been transported by the theater.

Starring as the central character, Man in Chair, is one of Seattle’s busiest actors, Jon Lutyens. With credits ranging from Theater Schmeater to ArtsWest to The 5th Avenue Theatre, Jon was seen this summer in Book-It’s Gregory Award-winning production of The Cider House Rules and is currently in Village Theatre’s Anne of Green Gables. Joining Jon will be a cast of established and up-and-coming Seattle musical theatre talent.

Directing the show will be Contemporary Classics Artistic Director and Gregory Award winner Brandon Ivie in his final Seattle directorial credit before relocating to New York City.

The Drowsy Chaperone got its start as an odd thing: a wedding present at a stag party. Bob Martin (who would later become the bookwriter and star as Man in Chair) received The Drowsy Chaperone as a wedding present for he and his wife, Janet Van De Graaf (both of whom are now characters in the musical). Their friends knew of Mr. Martin’s obsession with musicals and wrote him and his wife one.

It was such a hit that they remounted it at the Vancouver Fringe Festival. After transferring to a larger theatre in Canada, it was picked up by producer Roy Miller, went through rewrites, opened in Los Angeles and then transferred to Broadway. The original production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won five, including Best Book and Best Score, and played 674 performances.

Seattle Musical Theatre (formerly Civic Light Opera) is conveniently located in Magnuson Park, at 7120 62nd Ave NE . Parking is plentiful and free. Performances are Friday through Sunday, with one Thursday night offering. Tickets are $30-$40 with special rates for seniors, students and group sales. Tickets can be purchased at the website or by calling the box office at 206-363-2809.

Richmond Beach Lad Headlines in OLIVER! at Moore Theatre

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

A young Richmond Beach boy, Matthew Lewis, acts, sings and dances the principal role of Oliver when Seattle Theatre Group presents a Lyric Opera Northwest production of OLIVER! at the historic Moore Theatre in Seattle.

The show is one night only -- on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at 4:00 pm.

This “must see” musical is a full-throated production that will touch and thrill the whole family --- fully costumed, accompanied by a full orchestra conducted by David Spring, featuring 20 of the greater Seattle area’s most talented children, and including dancers and singers from both the Broadway and operatic traditions.

Matthew Lewis
Though still in elementary school, Matthew Lewis’ stage experience already includes Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the 5th Avenue Theatre and a recent performance in The Northwest Savoyards’ production of Annie. As a member of the Northwest Boy Choir, Matt performs in numerous venues throughout the Seattle area including Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony. Matt is a native of the Northwest and when not performing, he enjoys swimming, skiing, kayaking and studying aviation.

Gavin L
Younger brother, Gavin Lewis joins onstage for this production of Oliver! as one of the orphans and street urchins that are recruited by Fagin into his den of pickpockets. Although new to musical theatre, Gavin also sings with the Northwest Boychoir, where this summer he played the role of the beetle in a production of The Beetle’s Coat. Gavin is an avid skier, and a prolific and talented Lego builder. Cast members were amazed with the detailed Lego mock-up of a space shuttle he brought with him to a rehearsal.

Says fellow cast member and lyric tenor Kim Cooney (Dr. Grimswig in Oliver!) of Matthew: “This young boy is wise beyond his years. He has hundreds of lines. Yet he rehearses without fear or anxiety. If he trips over or forgets a few words, he simply calls out “line”, and moves ahead without skipping a beat. He is as comfortable conversing with his adult colleagues as he is his fellow orphans. He’s sensitive to how others are feeling. He’s bright yet selfless. As a singer, he stays spot on in pitch and rhythm, and he moves easily with the grace of a born dancer. Gavin is more shy, but terrific in his own right. The common denominator are parents who support without pushing.
Based on Charles Dickens’ immortal novel Oliver Twist and with music and lyrics by British pop composer Lionel Bart, Oliver! was a huge hit from its debut in 1960. It was the first British musical to transfer successfully to Broadway (2,618 performances in London and 774 on Broadway. In 1968 Oliver! was made into a film which won several Oscars, including Best Film.

OLIVER! is directed by the international soprano and baritone team of Pamela Casella Nim and Craig Heath Nim, founders of Lyric Opera Northwest. The choreographer is Pamela Turpen assisted by Jesse Stoddard.

Presented in association with the Seattle Theatre Group with whom Lyric Opera Northwest shares a commitment to nurturing young talent and perpetuating a love of theatre arts in all generations, OLIVER! is a visual and aural feast for those who might have missed this beloved favorite in the past and for those who have seen in again and again yet ask “Please sir, might I have more?”

Tickets may be ordered online or by calling 1-877-784-4849. Cost is $25 for adults, $20 for students. (There is a special discounted performance on Thursday, October 14 for school groups; contact Sara Wagner, 425-736-5848.

Broadway in Concert: A Gala fundraiser for Seattle Musical Theatre

Friday, July 30, 2010

Seattle Musical Theatre presents Broadway in Concert, a gala fundraiser featuring your favorite local talent singing your favorite musical theatre songs, on Saturday, August 14 at 3 pm and 7 pm.

Facing a slumping economy and stiff competition for grants, Seattle Musical Theatre is raising money towards production costs, replace aging equipment and make improvements to the space.

Installing a bathroom and running water in the dressing room would improve working conditions for actors, crew and musicians who currently have to use a single portable toilet during the run of a show and is high up on Seattle Musical Theatre’s wish list. However, it is often a challenge to cover staff and production costs and extra money is not readily available for this and other such projects.

A fantastic group of actors, who have all been involved with Seattle Musical Theatre (or Civic Light Opera, as they were known up until 5 years ago) at one time, are donating their time, energy and talents to sing a wide selection of musical theatre songs. There will be songs from past shows, current and future shows, as well as some numbers from wonderful musicals that will most likely never grace the SMT stage for one reason or another.

Resident Music Director Paul Linnes will provide accompaniment on the piano.
There will be two performances. One in the afternoon at 3 pm and one in the evening, at 7:30 pm. For the 3 pm performance kids under 12 are invited to attend for free (up to two kids per paying adult). Tickets are $20 per person.

The concerts are held at the Magnuson Park Theatre, 7250 62nd Ave NE, Seattle, WA, 98115. For reservations or information, call 206-363-2809 or visit the SMT webpage.
