Shoreline actress and singer Candace Vance is appearing in the Taproot production of Man of La Mancha, which opens July 7 and runs through August 7 at the Taproot Theatre, 204 N 85th St in Greenwood.

Candace has appeared locally in productions at Book-It Repertory, Seattle Children's, and Repertory Actors Theatre. She and her husband Sam co-founded a theatre conservatory as well as a theatre company in Madrid, Spain, which produced a national tour of Romeo and Juliet with Candace in the lead role.

In Shoreline, they are involved with the Shoreline Covenant Church, where they created a youth performing arts ministry, Called Out.

Adored for its characters, music and theatricality — the original production took place on a thrust stage like Taproot’s with very little scenery — Man of La Mancha’s story and themes resonate with today's audiences.

Taproot Theatre’s production takes this large, Broadway musical and re-imagines it to leverage the theatre’s intimate space.

Experience Don Quixote’s impossible dream like never before with Taproot Theatre’s intimate new staging of Man of La Mancha. Featuring the story and songs of an immortal classic, this Tony Award-winning musical comes to the Taproot stage with fresh, acoustic arrangements. Don Quixote is mad... mad enough to dream an impossible dream while tilting after windmills with his trusty sidekick, Sancho Panza. Quixote’s romantic quest is as crazy as he is. But is his impossible dream madness or vision?

For tickets contact Taproot Theatre’s box office at 206-781-9707.  Group rates are available. For groups, call 206-781-9708.

Ticket prices are $20-35. Ages 25 and under, $10. Student/senior discount, $3 off regular priced tickets (excludes previews).

Tickets for the pay-what-you-can performance on July 14 go on sale day of show at the box office only. Plus, a limited supply of $10 tickets will be offered from 12-5 pm for that evening’s performance. Limit 6 tickets per person from 12-5 p.m., and 4 tickets per person after 5 pm.

Taproot Theatre Company is a professional, non-profit theatre company with a multi-faceted production program. Founded in 1976, Taproot Theatre serves the Pacific Northwest with Mainstage Productions, Touring Productions and Acting Studio. Taproot exists to create theatre that explores the beauty and questions of life while bringing hope to our search for meaning. Seattle Musical Threatre to premier two original musicals

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Seattle Musical Theatre is excited to announce the launch of their Second Season: a series of original musicals.

While SMT is known for producing high quality productions of established Broadways shows, they realized that there are many talented individuals and groups who are writing exciting new works and looking for opportunities to produce their musicals. In keeping with their mission to provide opportunities for local artists to develop and perfect their crafts, SMT has dedicated their theatre and resources to help produce two new musicals:

The first show, Don Giovanni: A New Musical, is a completely re-envisioned musical theatre version of Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte’s opera by the same name and will run January 7 – 23, 2011. Written by Seattle native Jesse Smith, it features a brand new score that mixes contemporary music with theatrical and operatic influences. The show enjoyed a great reception when it was produced at Cornish College of the Arts last summer and SMT is excited to stage its first professional incarnation.

The second show is called The King’s Proposal or the Marriage of Princess Guido. With book and lyrics by Michael Govier and music by Northwest native Curtis Williams, it is the comic tale of an evil King who tries to marry his daughter to an unwanted suitor and involves mistaken identities, forced marriage, forced puppetry, forced cross-dressing, forced songs and swords. The King’s Proposal has been produced as a straight play in Chicago and will enjoy its first production as a musical at SMT. It will run March 20 – April 10, 2011.

Both shows will be fully produced , like any other SMT musical, with sets, costumes, lights, sound, props and a regular sized orchestra.

Main stage shows for SMT’s 2010-2011 season are Camelot, Chicago, The Drowsy Chaperone and Into the Woods.

Ticket prices for Second Season productions are $25-$30, $20 for students and seniors. All performances are at the Magnuson Park Theatre, 7400 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle. Great season ticket packages at steep discounts are still available.

He’s sure that the perfect girl is waiting for him, and until she makes herself known, he is content to amuse himself with the countless women who come to New York every day. Seattle Musical Theatre - quality entertainment close to home

Review - Diane Hettrick

Years ago, my husband and I had tickets to five theatre seasons a year. From our home near the Snohomish county line we could hop on the freeway and be at a Queen Anne theatre in 15 minutes. As time went by, travel time took longer, parking was more expensive and difficult, and the quality of the plays seemed to diminish. One by one, we dropped our season tickets.

Later, downtown Seattle opened theatres with touring companies of New York shows. The quality was excellent, but prices were high, parking expensive and difficult, and the commute was not any better, so we never got into the habit.

Now there is a local option, specializing in musical theatre - the Seattle Musical Theatre. The SMT began life in 1975 as the Civic Light Opera. After the first two seasons, they realized that their patrons wanted musicals rather than operettas. In 2006, they changed their name to reflect their productions.

In 2008, they signed a long-term lease with the Seattle Parks Department and the City of Seattle for a facility in Magnuson Park at 7400 Sand Point Way NE. It's a safe environment with ample free parking. It took us 15 minutes to get to the theatre from our home, and 15 minutes from the theatre to Lake Forest Park Commons for a cup of coffee after the show.

The theatre itself is a comfortable size, 425 seats, with a
sharply slanted floor so that all seats have clear sight lines. Acoustics and sound are excellent. It's very plain, but the SMT has a fund drive running for planned upgrades.

Their season runs September to May. There are two productions left this year. Company, a Stephen Sondheim musical, runs from February 12 - 28 and 100 in the shade runs May 7 - 23, 2010. For information and tickets call the box office at 206-363-2809 or visit them on the web.
