"Mountains, Birds, and Dinosaurs" – Philharmonia Northwest Presents Children's Concert with KING FM's Lisa Bergman

Friday, March 17, 2023

KING FM announcer Lisa Bergman joins Philharmonia Northwest and Music Director Julia Tai for one of the orchestra’s most beloved traditions: their annual Children’s Concert.

This year’s program, titled Mountains, Birds, and Dinosaurs, takes place Sunday March 26, 2023 at 2pm at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center in Shoreline, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155.

Bergman will narrate The Mountain That Loved a Bird, a piece by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw based on the children’s book by author Alice McLerran and illustrator Eric Carle.

This beloved story balances messages about friendship and renewal, but also loss and trying to hold onto things that will inevitably change.

The program also includes Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky, an ode to Russian folklore and literature, and well-known for its appearance in Disney’s Fantasia; and music from John Williams’ score to Jurassic Park, a favorite among film buffs and dinosaur fans of all ages.

Lisa Bergman
Bergman, also an acclaimed pianist and teacher, is a veteran radio broadcaster, best known for hosting KING FM’s Explore Music series as well as her decade-long tenure at Leavenworth’s KOHO FM.

Her past appearances as narrator with Philharmonia Northwest include their 2017 performance of Peter and the Wolf, as well as the 2021 world premiere of The Goose Egg by Seattle composer Angelique Poteat.

Tickets are available online at philharmonianw.org – $30 adult, $20 for seniors/students, and $10 children under 18. They will also be for sale at the box office.

This is the fifth of six concerts in Philharmonia Northwest’s 2022-23 season. The final concert, Perspectives: Fauré and Hagen – a collaboration with Kirkland Choral Society – will take place April 23 at Edmonds Center for the Arts. (Please note, this concert has been rescheduled from April 22-23 at Bastyr University)

The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) is nearing its bi-annual conference this month in Bellevue.

These students participate in three days of rehearsals that are directed by nationally recognized conductors during the bi-annual NAfME All-Northwest Music Educator Convention in Bellevue, February 16-19, 2023.

This concert will include the consortium premiere of a trumpet concerto by JUNO Award-winning composer, Vivian Fung.

Mary launched a consortium where orchestras came together to hire composer Vivian Fung to write a trumpet concerto.

Philharmonia Northwest was one of the eight orchestras taking part in this project - so their consortium premiere is one of eight exclusive performances of this new work!

This concert will be held at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center on February 12th at 2:00pm, features soloist, Mary Elizabeth Bowden, and is conducted by Julia Tai.

SHORECREST PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 12 @ 2:00PM
Tickets and more information here

This February concert features the magnificent sounds of brass instruments. Made famous by cartoons and television shows, Gioachino Rossini‘s William Tell Overture is one of the composer’s most popular pieces on the concert stage.

Lauded as “One of today’s most eclectic composers” (NPR), Vivian Fung wrote her trumpet concerto for the virtuosic trumpeter, Mary Elizabeth Bowden that “stretches the imagination of what is possible for the instrument.”

The concert concludes with the lush and picturesque Third Symphony “Rheinish” by Robert Schumann.

Assad premiere

Program notes about Vivian Fung's Concerto:

"Trumpet Concerto is a virtuosic, tour de force work displaying the capabilities of the Eb, Flugelhorn, and Piccolo Trumpets and stretches the imagination to what is possible for the instruments.
'Written for trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden, the concerto originally was inspired by a conversation about Mary’s journey in her solo career in general, and as a woman in a male-dominated field. Ideas of striving, overcoming challenges, frustration, passion, and ultimately joy and celebration are all explored in this piece."

Classical Trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden has built an in-demand career as a soloist, praised for her “splendid, brilliant” playing (Gramophone Magazine) and her “pure, refined, and warm” tone (American Record Guide). A Gold Medal Global Music Award Winner, Opus Klassik Nominee, and Yamaha Performing Artist, she has also worked to establish a new repertoire for the trumpet through creative, collaborative commissioning projects and award-winning albums.

Local resident performs with Oberlin College and Conservatory at Carnegie Hall

Sunday, December 18, 2022

Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Ohio
OBERLIN, Ohio (December 16, 2022) – Matthew Walton of Lake Forest Park, WA, was among nearly 200 student musicians from Oberlin College and Conservatory to perform works spanning three centuries in the magnificent Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall December 2, 2022.

The private gala was held for the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations to honor the work of Csaba Kőrösi, president of the UN General Assembly, and diplomatic and UN staff communities around the world.

Under the direction of Raphael Jiménez, a professor of conducting and director of Oberlin Orchestras, the program included Adolphus Hailstork’s triumphal Fanfare on Amazing Grace; Sergei Rachmaninoff’s emotionally charged Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18 and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125—widely regarded as a celebration of irrepressible unity, with its iconic “Ode to Joy."

The evening signaled the symbolic launch of an innovative new partnership between Oberlin College and Conservatory, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, and the Global Foundation for the Performing Arts to improve access to education for students around the world and to enhance quality of life through education and the performing arts.

"We believe that espousing art and education is an embrace of our common humanity," said Oberlin President Carmen Twillie Ambar in an address to an audience of 1,800 diplomats and invited guests. "And this approach is a way to change the world."

Matthew is a 2018 Shorecrest graduate, son of David and Gina Walton of Shoreline.
