To Everything There is a Season

Monday, October 3, 2022

Winter
To everything there is a season
Photos by Doug Cerretti

The four seasons of the Pin Oak (Quercus palustris)
located at the Edmonds Veteran Plaza, 250 5th Ave N, Edmonds, WA 98020

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

Spring
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

Summer
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

Fall
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late
--
Song popularized by the Byrds (1965); written by Pete Seeger (1959) who adapted the lyrics from the Bible (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)

North City Bistro has new owners

Monday, September 26, 2022

Lee Oskar and Friends playing at The Bistro

Sharon and Ray Bloom have signed papers to sell the North City Bistro and Wine Shop to Taylor and Leah Park.

The Parks are currently in the labor-intensive process of obtaining a license from the State Liquor Control Board.

Ray says, "Taylor is a Very well known Chef with a Ton of experience, and Leah is a Pastry chef, so we are quite certain they will elevate our already delicious food."

Ray and Sharon Bloom
Ray and Sharon will continue to work with them for some weeks,

"until they are up to speed on our processes, including hosting live music, which they have committed to doing.
"That may change eventually, but if you all continue to support them and the live music, that will truly help insure that music will still flow from NCB!"

"Sharon and I can't express how peaceful and pleasant the whole negotiation process has been, and we feel our beloved Bistro is going to the Perfect people!!
"We hope you continue to support them as you have us over the past (nearly) 9 years!"

The Blooms are retiring to the south of France.

St. Dunstan's dedicates new organ with recital September 18 featuring Aaron David Miller

Friday, September 9, 2022

Aaron David Miller, organist
Join us on Sunday September 18, 2022 at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Shoreline, WA at 3pm as we celebrate the installation of our new organ with the long awaited - and twice postponed - Dedicatory Recital, presented by Aaron David Miller, a world-renowned organ recitalist and improviser.

Dr. Miller will play a thrilling program with repertoire spanning the centuries, will lead the audience in a rousing hymn, and will open and close his program with improvisations - including an improvised Organ Suite!

A reception will follow the concert where you can meet the artist and the organ's builders.

This concert is free and open to the community. It is underwritten and co-sponsored by the Seattle Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Two decades ago, Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church began raising money to replace their church organ.

In 2019, they launched the “Imagine the Ways” capital campaign to finish raising funds for the organ and make significant other capital improvements to the church facilities.

The sanctuary remodel by Deacon Construction was completed sooner than planned, and by late 2020 the installation of the Ortloff Organ Opus 2 was complete. However, the dedication concert was delayed due to continuing pandemic restrictions.

We are delighted that the dedication concert is happening on September 18, 2022, at 3:00pm.

St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church
722 North 145th Street Shoreline, WA 98133

For more information visit the Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church website’s concert page at https://www.sdchp.org/music-2/organ/ To let us know you’re coming, please RSVP on Event Brite.

French-Algerian classical guitarist to start his 2022 North American Tour in Lake Forest Park with concert and master class

Sunday, August 21, 2022

UPDATE: The concert venue has been changed from a house concert to the Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore. See updated article here.

After releasing ‘Azwan,’ an album about our oneness and interconnectivity in the midst of a unifying global crisis, world renowned French-Algerian acoustic guitar master, vocalist and composer, Pierre Bensusan, returns to the USA and Canada, on the second leg of his 2022 North American Tour.

His first stop will be in Lake Forest Park, Washington where on Thursday September 8, 2022 he will teach a workshop, then the following evening, Friday September 9th performs a concert.

Says Bensusan of this tour:
"Even if I loved staying at my home, near Paris, for two years; playing, writing, taking the time, stopping running, sometimes locked down in Heaven... I felt a real relief to be able to play live again.
'The first part of my North American tour, this Spring, left me with an immense feeling of gratitude for the public who came to the concerts.
'There is nothing stronger than getting together around the music played live, especially when many were walking into a concert hall for the first time in two years."

A DADGAD GUITAR WORKSHOP WITH PIERRE BENSUSAN
HOUSE CONCERT
Info for both events @ peter.pjahn@gmail.com or 425-791-8430

ABOUT PIERRE

If World Music means the fusion of traditional, contemporary, jazz, classical and pop music, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument.

Also called “The Prince of DADGAD” (open tuning),  it is on stage that this artist has earned his stripes: among others, the Rose d'Or of the Montreux Festival, and being elected Best Guitarist of World Music by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine!

His triple album "Encore" won the Grand Prix of the Independent Music Awards in the category Best Live Album...  Since his first performances in 1974 in France, the guitarist has sold half a million albums and given thousands of concerts around the globe, both solo and through numerous collaborations.

Born in French Algeria, Pierre Bensusan is an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost “sacred” music is an intimate and orchestral hymn, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning - a unique and transparent technique, under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim.

A concert, a competition, a community event for all age groups, a platform to nourish talent, this year's Battle of the Bands was all that and more. The highlights were many, including a beer garden sponsored by Monka Brewing Co., food trucks, and musician Q and A’s on stage with emcee Sasha Cousineau. Of course all of this was capped off with five wonderful performances by such talented local musicians. The future is bright!

Neighbors enjoying the night at Battle of the Bands

By Sally Yamasaki

There are moments in life where you feel such a high level of positivity in your community that you forget all about the woes of the world and just feel joy. That moment was Saturday night at the Shorelake Arts Battle of the Bands held in Lake Forest Park’s Animal Acres Park.

JAMN take their turn on stage
An audience of all ages, from young children, teenagers, young adults, and yes - us senior citizens -  gathered together in our local park to listen to Five Bands “battling” to win first prize.

It almost seemed a misnomer to call it a battle as all of the bands were grateful and supportive of each other as artists who all shared a common love of expressing themselves with music.

Children's dance-off photo by Sally Yamasaki

As I watched the children dancing with their unrestrained delight enveloping the audience with their exuberance, I felt grateful to ShoreLake Arts and the City of Lake Forest Park for providing us with this beautiful evening.

What a fun day! The band had a great time competing at the North Berwick Highland Games in Scotland. No prizes for us today, but everybody had a blast.

We got to explore the beautiful seaside village of N Berwick and listen to some incredible pipe bands from Scotland, Australia, Canada and the USA.

Everyone we met was friendly and welcoming - especially the mayor N Berwick!

Tomorrow we're off to the Bridge of Allan games for more fun and music
