Karaoke Night at Drumlin, Saturday 8pm

Saturday, July 30, 2022

"Wouldn't it be funny if Drumlin turned into a Karaoke bar for April Fool's Day?" It started off as a joke, but soon took on a life of its own. Shoreline residents let their voices be heard that night, and it was clear: this has to happen again. Round 2 is set for Saturday!

This time Drumlin will be hosting Baby Ketten Karaoke, which possesses one of the most expansive online song libraries available. It hails from Portland, Oregon and the Baby Ketten Klub, open 7 nights a week. Nestled in southeast Portland, the club offers private karaoke rooms and a vegan menu. (Go Portland!)

Lucky for Seattle-area residents, Baby Ketten has now expanded into Washington.

Karaoke translates from Japanese as "kara" (empty) "oke" (orchestra). Empty Orchestra. It's the stripping away of vocals from a track, and allowing the music to stand on its own. What makes Baby Ketten's style interesting is how songs are deconstructed, allowing him to layer in his own instrumentation.

The end result is a completely unique song selection. Additionally, patrons will be able to download the Baby Ketten app, and peruse the immense song catalogue.

It will be getting started around 8pm, this Saturday July 30, 2022 at 522 NE 165th in the Ridgecrest neighborhood. People are encouraged to show up early to secure a seat.

Maracujá grew to an established act that regularly played some of Seattle's top venues, regional festivals, tours the Pacific Northwest and Mountain West, and is sought after for corporate events, academic performances, and private events.

To step into the soundscape of Birch Pereira and the Gin Joints is to have your fingers on a veritable radio dial.

With deep sonic roots in virtually every style of mid-20th century American music – from americana to blues to jazz, soul and vintage rock ’n’ roll – the versatile Seattle-based band offers a rangy dial’s worth of songs for audiences who want to sock-hop in poodle skirts one minute, rock out to hot guitar licks the next and later hug their honeys under the stars as a car stereo plays into the night.

Birch Pereira and the Gin Joints are a popular Northwest band who perform extensively on the West Coasts of the US and Canada with recurring gigs in New York City, New Orleans and Los Angeles as well. In 2016 their first album, Dream Man, won Earshot Jazz Society’s “Northwest Jazz Recording of the Year” and in 2017 and 2018 Birch was nominated as “Vocalist of the Year”.

Their second album “Western Soul,” which features western-tinged jazz and soul originals, was released in March 2018 and received enthusiastic reviews from No Depression, PopMatters, JazzIs and steady airplay on a diverse array of stations in the Northwest and beyond, including KEXP, KNKX KBCS, WVPR, KBOO and many others.

Featuring front man Birch Pereira’s “old soul” tenor voice and his skilled bass playing, the Gin Joints offer captivating arrangements of well-crafted originals and well-chosen covers. The band features skilled and versatile musicians who share the same love of the American song traditions and the desire to offer fresh interpretations. Whether as a trio or with the addition of a pulsating horn section, the band will take you on a sonic tour of great music. Tune in, fasten your seatbelts and prepare to be transported.

Music scene: King Youngblood, headed by Shorecrest grad, releases new album to rave reviews

Friday, May 20, 2022

Cameron Lavi Jones by Babi Photography

King Youngblood has proven themselves the definition of “thunderous alt rock for a new generation” (Under the Radar). King Youngblood’s new LP BIG THANK can be heard everywhere now.

Alternative Press calls King Youngblood “Seattle’s Alt Rock Princes” - they sure got that right. What started with University of Washington house shows and became a favorite at Seattle’s underage venue Vera Project has built undeniable momentum; major 2022 festivals are already on the books, from Treefort to Capitol Hill Block Party to Brodie Nation Festival to Punk Black Fest.

King Youngblood photo by Caean Couto

BIG THANK is the writing/producing collaboration of Shorecrest High alum Cameron Lavi-Jones, front man and founder of King Youngblood, and Producer/Artist Eric Lilavois (known for his work with Ayron Jones), one of the owners of the historic London Bridge Studios in Shoreline, WA.

“Cameron is a young man with an old soul, it’s exhilarating to work with him, and the positive, focused light he brings to our sessions” says Lilavois.
Cover art by KYB2

Says Lavi-Jones,

“BIG THANK is the most authentic representation of who King Youngblood is right now. If I'm being honest, this is really the first time we've released a body of work that I have felt this level of pride about.
"I know it comes from the focus on intentionality that we've been able to apply to this album. There is so much catharsis, so much vulnerability, and yet we are still finding a way to either poke fun at the negatives or downright reclaim our power from them.”

For this Band of Brothers, there is nothing but pure unwavering commitment, gratitude and a whole lot of Rock Music. The band is “Exhibit A” that rock and roll never dies – it just changes form.

There is a Rock revolution happening in 2022, led by a new breed of young BIPOC artists. King Youngblood, with their cathartic live shows and exquisitely produced recorded music, are at the vanguard; unapologetically burning the house down.

This concert is appropriate for music lovers of all ages.

Masks will be required for everyone in attendance.

Susanna Valleau, organist
Susanna Valleau began studying piano at age seven and could hardly walk past the piano without sitting down to play. Ten years later, however, the organ stole her affections when she heard Widor’s Toccata for the first time, and she went on to earn degrees in organ performance from Lawrence University (Bachelor of Music) and the University of Washington (Master of Music).

She has earned top prizes in multiple nationwide organ competitions. Susanna serves as music director of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Shoreline, WA and is on faculty with the Seattle Girls’ Choir as accompanist to two of their groups.

She also gives solo recitals across the country, maintains an active piano studio, and collaborates regularly as an accompanist and in chamber music settings on piano, harpsichord, and organ.

Here's a sample of recitalist Susanna Valleau playing Bach - but you'll have to come to the concert for the full experience!

World Renowned Pianist / Composer Hwaen Ch’uqi
with String Virtuosi to play Vaughan Williams’ Quintet
and a World Premiere

Saturday, May 7th at 6pm at Cascadia Art Museum

Cascadia Art Museum continues their well-loved classical chamber music concert series with the lush romantic Quintet in C minor for Piano and Strings by Ralph Vaughan Williams featuring international pianist/composer Hwaen Ch’uqi, with acclaimed musicians Brandon Vance (violin), Pamela Liu (viola), Erika Pierson (cello) and Anna Doak (bass).

The concert also includes the world premiere of Élégie-Berceuse, a beautiful and evocative new composition by Hwaen Ch’uqi.

Mr. Ch’uqi has thrilled audiences with his virtuosity throughout the United States, and in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Bulgaria, Taiwan and Japan, as a fellow at Tanglewood for 3 years, and concertizing at Seiji Ozawa Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.

Internationally acclaimed violinist/composer Brandon Vance is the recipient of Scotland's 2017 Royal National Mòd "Sutherland Cup" in Scottish Fiddle, as well as being the youngest to win the U.S. National Open Scottish Fiddling Championship.

Violist/violinist Pamela Liu has recorded and performed internationally. She was a member of the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra in Taipei, Taiwan, and currently she plays with the Yakima Symphony and in the violin-guitar duo Tutti Dolce, with husband Chris Liu.

Cellist Erika Pierson has performed as a solo artist and chamber musician in the U.S., England, Germany and Spain.

Bassist Anna Doak is a member of Northwest Sinfonietta and has played with the Seattle Symphony, Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra and on numerous recording projects.

“We are very honored to present these outstanding international musicians and the world premiere of a heartfelt and lyrical piece by a major composer at Cascadia Art Museum,” said museum volunteer Cal Lewin.
“It’s wonderful to be able to hear such great musicians close-up and personal, as chamber music was originally meant to be experienced.”

The concert will be in the museum’s main gallery, surrounded by Northwest art.

Each month the museum features outstanding chamber ensembles, soloists and opera singers. The concerts are about one-hour in length, leaving you time to dine out after.

Concert tickets include admission to all the museum galleries, so you can arrive early to see the current exhibits.
