Seattle Labor Chorus fundraising concert May 7, 2022

Tuesday, April 19, 2022

In the glorious, centuries-old tradition of labor movement music, the Seattle Labor Chorus offers an evening concert with inspirational stories of workers struggling for power to bring about social, economic, racial, and environmental justice.

Register to join this live-streamed event and make a financial contribution to keep the Labor Chorus on the move! If public health conditions allow, we will have room for a small live audience. Seating will be limited.

We have a goal of $17k this year and we are already at $5,000! Suggested donation: $20

During the registration process you can specify if you want to attend in-person. All people who would like to attend in person will need to wear a mask and have proof of vaccination. We will notify you by phone or email on May 1, 2022 if in-person is possible! Again, registration can be found here, https://buytickets.at/seattlelaborchorus/682445

We welcome everyone, no matter the amount donated. Contribute whatever you can. If you can give more than $20, that would be a great help to keep the Labor Chorus strong. Once you have registered, you will receive a Zoom link to join the concert.

The Labor Chorus is a non-profit, membership organization. All singers pay dues and contribute in other ways as well. Annual donations from unions and other labor organizations also enable us to support workers’ struggles at picket lines and rallies.

Financial support from our fans and supporters in the community is essential to cover expenses so we can keep singing for justice, safety, peace, and power for all working people. Our fundraising goal for this event is $17,000.

Come immerse yourself in an hour of music in a serene and welcoming setting, where you can feel the organ’s vibrations through your body as you look through the windows to old growth evergreens. This concert is appropriate for music lovers of all ages.

Masks will be required for everyone in attendance. Free will offering requested.

Naomi Shiga is a frequent performer of organ recitals, most recently playing in Switzerland at the historic Bellelay Abbey and the Church of the Holy Spirit, Bern.

She has served on the faculty of North Harris College where she taught music theory and class piano, has worked at a number of churches across the country, including St. John the Evangelist, Boston, the Old West Church, Boston, and First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Houston.

In addition to performing and teaching, she is also a translator of books on music and is active as a composer. Her most recent commission was for Hymn Accompaniments for the Hymnal of Nippon Sei Ko Kai published for the Anglican Church in Japan by the St. Paul University Institute of Sacred Music Press.

Ms. Shiga began her organ studies at Ferris Women’s University, Yokohama before moving to the United States where she received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Organ Performance with the award of Distinguished Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She also undertook post-graduate studies in organ at the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston.

Ms. Shiga is a former Dean of the Tacoma Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and is Music Director and Organist at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Tacoma.

The Ortloff Organ Company Opus 2 was installed at St. Dunstan’s Church in 2021.

He is a former Dean of the Tacoma Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, is the Director of Music at Trinity Lutheran Church, Tacoma, and is a member of the contingent faculty at Pacific Lutheran University where he has served as Visiting University Organist.

In addition, he is Artist-in-Residence on the Paul Fritts and Co. organ (opus 13) at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Tacoma, playing on and helping to organize the church’s concert series and providing educational opportunities about the organ and its repertoire.

Dr. Wohlers has performed with the Houston Bach Society, Ars Lyrica Houston, and the Seattle Bach Choir, and has written notes for the Boston Early Music Festival and Loft Recordings.

He holds degrees with honors from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, from the New England Conservatory of Music in performance and musicology, and from Southern Adventist University, and has engaged in extensive research on fugues in the early seventeenth century.

Seattle Symphony marks the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066

Friday, February 11, 2022

Executive Order 9066
The Seattle Symphony marks the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 with a week-long digital broadcast of the EO9066 program on Seattle Symphony Live

Issued on February 19, 1942, Executive Order 9066 authorized the relocation and incarceration of over 100,000 innocent Japanese American citizens during World War II.

Over the course of several months, Japanese American men, women and children were removed from their homes and held at internment camps without due process.

The executive order indelibly changed their lives and the history of the Puget Sound region, with many lingering effects still felt today.

The EO9066 program will be available to stream on Seattle Symphony Live for one week, beginning Thursday, February 17, 2022 and run through February 24.

On February 19th, the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, the performance will be available to stream for free.

In this powerful concert, the orchestra showcases two works inspired by the executive order — first, the world premiere performance of of Paul Chihara’s Beyond the Hills, a Seattle Symphony commission; then the musicians are joined on stage by Seattle-born Kishi Bashi for his own Improvisations on EO9066; Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 rounds out the program.

Shoreline classical music promoter Mary Ransdell bringing local, international talent together in ‘Seattle Series’

Wednesday, February 2, 2022

By Joshua Lee

Some of the world's best classical musicians reside in Seattle, but Shoreline resident Mary Ransdell fears too few locals are aware of that.

In an effort to find unique, one-night-only combinations of performers while capturing the magic of live music, Ransdell organized The Seattle Series, a collaborative classical music event held at the Women’s University Club in Seattle featuring both local musicians and guests of their choosing from across the world.

“The Seattle area is just blessed with really high-level classical musicians and most of the population doesn't know it,” Ransdell said.

Ransdell, who moved to Shoreline in 2016, is a prominent figure of Seattle’s classical music scene, starting with her experience promoting the long-running Highlands Concert Series in The Highlands neighborhood of Shoreline. Held in the Florence Henry Memorial Chapel, the Highlands Concert Series also focuses on classical chamber music, offering everything from soloists to quintet ensembles.

“The Seattle Series is a direct outgrowth of that programming experience,” Ransdell said in an email.

It was there where Ransdell met many of the musical guests featured in The Seattle Series.

“Before joining the Highlands series, I had taken a professional detour from music into the world of theoretical economics, followed some years later by architecture,” Ransdell said in an email.
“After having studied music seriously for many years, I ran headlong into two obstacles — musical perfectionism coupled with outside intellectual interests … The battle between artistry and intellectual pursuits raged on, finally back to my first love: classical music.”

The first show, taking place February 18, 2022 features Efe Baltacigil, the Seattle City Orchestra’s award-winning principal cellist, and Anna Polonsky, an acclaimed New York solo and chamber pianist.

“[Ransdell and I have] known each other for close to eight years or so,” Baltacigil said. “I played in her previous series, the Highlands … So that's how we met first, and she's been a big supporter of the orchestra. She’s a wonderful, supportive figure, and every musician dreams to have a friend like that.”

Following the February show, there are two more performances:

March 10  will feature Noah Geller, Concertmaster of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra; Meeka Quan DiLorenzo, Associate Principal Cello, Seattle Symphony Orchestra; Amy Yang, Philadelphia-based pianist.

May 6 will be the final performance of the season, featuring Demarre McGill, principal flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, and an as-of-yet unannounced collaborator.

All three shows will take place at the Grand Ballroom of the Women’s University Club in downtown Seattle.

“There are so many reasons to come and see live music — especially now,” DiLorenzo said in an email.
“I think we are all particularly starved for the community and transcendence that only live music can offer. Returning from COVID has given me newfound humility and gratitude for a live audience and the exchange of humanity offered in a musical performance.”

In light of the continuing pandemic, masks will be required for both musicians and attendees in the performance space, with N-95 masks being provided. Additionally, separate areas for eating and drinking will be provided during the post-show reception.

“Full vaccination or when vaccination is not possible, a negative PCR test within the last 48 hours or antigen test within the last 24 hours, will be required for admittance,” Ransdell said in an email.

Ransdell is already in talks with Seattle Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Noah Geller for next season.

“I just think Mary is a terrific person, an exemplary arts lover,” Geller said. “I see her in the audience every week without fail at the Seattle Symphony. And nothing to me shows a person's love of music and support of us as artists and individuals like coming to our concerts.”

Tickets for The Seattle Series are available here. Tickets start at $40, but season subscriptions are available as well.

“For those who don't attend [concerts] and are not familiar with the genre, what I would say is … the beauty, the energy, the passion, it can surprise you,” Ransdell said.
“What we're attempting to do, and I think we will successfully do, is create an intimate atmosphere … A way to experience [music] that isn't simply just ‘go in, hear it and leave.’”

Update: Performers for the March show have been changed.

So whether you’re heading back for something you saw last time or looking for something new, you’ll find it at the market on Sunday!

And you definitely won’t want to miss the LFP Farmers Market, which can always be counted on to have the freshest and best in Washington grown and produced fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, wines, baked goods, and more.

Many of your favorite regular season vendors will be there to help you stock up for your feasts with friends and family over the holidays.

Friday, December 3, 2021

Weekend Music at Third Place Commons is officially moving back to evenings in December. Head to the Commons every Friday and Saturday night from 7-9pm through Saturday, December 18, 2021 for the best in local live music.

Here’s the line-up:
  • Friday, December 3rd – Honky Tonk Sweethearts

After that, Weekend Music will take a couple weeks off for the holidays, but will return in 2022!

Per state and county mandates, masks remain required inside the Commons at all times when attending performances (except when actively eating or drinking) and vaccination verification will be required to sit in the enclosed seating area near the stage.

Unfortunately, dancing – a high contact, high exertion, and close proximity activity – is still not something that can be safely managed in the Commons space. Therefore, dancing is not permitted at this time in the interest of public health and for the protection of Commons staff and performers.

But great music is still great music, and this line-up can’t be beat! So mark your calendar and make a plan to join the fun every weekend through December 18th!

Check the Third Place Commons online calendar for more info on the December bands, as well as other upcoming events including the LFP Holiday Farmers Market and Crafts Fair on Sunday, December 19th!
