Music4Life delivered 13 ready-to-play musical instruments to Shoreline Schools in the 3rd quarter of 2023-24

Wednesday, July 17, 2024

During the third quarter of 2023-24 (March thru May) Music4Life delivered thirteen (13) ready-to-play musical instruments to Shoreline Public Schools.: Three alto saxophones; four clarinets; four flutes; and two 4/4 violins.

Thus, your total for the first three quarters of the year is eighteen (18) delivered instruments valued at $8,275. In that time, your Music4Life Chapter has raised $1,000 in financial donations. Instrument delivery numbers are being verified with Shoreline Public Schools.

Instrument deliveries have resumed at a more normal pace across all 13 of our Programs during the last quarter. (Recently added were Chapters for Lake Washington and Issaquah schools.) Even so, we are working to add new vendor/repair shops to help spread the opportunity among local businesses and continue to value quality repairs over quantity.

Every instrument we provide is “a loaner.” Because these instruments have an estimated remaining useful life of three to 15 years, several students are expected to experience the educational benefits from the use of many of them. Please feel free to share our progress with your team and anyone in the community as you wish.

In addition, there are other instruments in-process of repairs that should be delivered soon to Shoreline Schools and more are coming in. These will be reported to you in future months. For fairness, instruments are provided to participating public school districts on the basis of the relative financial productivity of each of their Chapters.

If you have an unused musical instrument that you could donate so that a student whose family cannot afford instrument rentals will have access to music in the schools, here is the information on where to donate.

How to donate an instrument

Click on the link below, download the Donor Form, fill it out and put it into the case with the instrument (one form per instrument, please!).

There are a number of donation drop-off locations to choose from at the bottom of the Donation Form, including the nearest Kennelly Keys Music, Hammond Ashley Violins in Issaquah, Ted Brown Music locations in Tacoma and Seattle, Guitar Center stores in Seattle and Tukwila and Rafael Carrabba Violins in Seattle.

Download Donation Form

Once we get the report from the repair shop, we’ll be glad to e-send you a thank you letter upon request that you also can use for your tax purposes.

Music4Life provides donated instruments to 11 school districts for children in need

Tuesday, October 3, 2023

Music4Life collects donated musical instruments, has them refurbished, and donates them to school districts so children whose families can't afford rentals can still have the benefit of music. If you have an instrument to give or money to donate, see the Music4Life webpage.

SEATTLE, Washington Music4Life reports delivering 258 full-sized ready-to-play musical instruments during the 2022-23 school year to its 11 participating public school districts.

The instruments are free-of-charge and intended for use by the students of families in-need.

Also provided were 1,375 recorders (the little flute-like instrument that sticks straight out of the mouth) for use by third- and fourth-graders in the Link-Up program with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

The youngsters get their recorders in the fall, learn to play them and are then invited to Benaroya Hall to play the instruments with the Seattle Symphony.

“The total value of instruments provided is $126,923 as determined by our independent vendor/repair experts,” says Music4Life C-Founder / CEO David Endicott.
“Need” is often demonstrated by a family’s participation in free-or-reduced lunch programs and determined at the teacher level, he adds.

Research shows that students who participate in school instrumental music activities do better in math, science, history, literature, international languages, reading and writing, even in computer science, in addition to what it teaches in terms of teamwork and self-discipline.

Not all children want to participate in instrumental music activities, of course.

“But for those who do and whose families cannot afford a musical instrument,” Endicott says, “they are effectively barred from getting the full basic education guaranteed to them by the Washington State Constitution.
"And the sad fact is that, in today’s pandemic-recovering economy, many families cannot even afford to rent a musical instrument. So Music4Life is just as much an education program as it is an instrumental music program.”
During this fiscal school year, Music4Life delivered ready-to-play musical instruments to Auburn, Bremerton, Edmonds, Everett, Highline, Kent, Marysville, Northshore, Riverview, Seattle and Shoreline Public Schools.

Several new public school districts are being considered and others are welcome to apply.

Ready-to-play musical instruments are provided to qualified students in these districts as long as they stay enrolled in that public school district.

“We figure that the more they use the instruments, the better they’ll get,” Endicott says. “If they leave the school district for any reason, such as graduation or the family moves, the instrument needs to be returned to the school district so another student of a family in-need can benefit from its use.”

Each instrument has a remaining useful life of three-to-15 years, meaning that multiple students may benefit from its use.

“Local enthusiasts who share our values of service to ‘kids,’ ‘instrumental music’ or ‘education’ are welcome to join one of our local Chapters,” Endicott says.

Music4Life.org provides donated-and-repaired musical instruments at no charge to public school districts for use by students in-need.

During the first half of 2022-23 (September through February) Music4Life delivered fifteen (15) ready-to-play musical instruments independently valued at $13,600 free of charge to Shoreline Public Schools.

Music4Life Reports annual progress

Sunday, November 22, 2020

Music4Life today reports delivering nearly as many musical instruments in the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 school year when compared with its previous 12-month period.

The western Washington-based non-profit delivered musical instruments worth $157,099 in 2019-20 compared with $157,221 of instruments delivered in 2018-19 to ten participating public school districts.

Each musical instrument receives a fair market value after repairs are completed as determined by independent vendor-experts.

Music4Life is a non-profit that provides donated and repaired musical instruments at no charge to ten local public school districts so all students may participate in school-based instrumental music activities. Music4Life mainly benefits students participating in free or reduced lunch programs.

“This really is an astonishing accomplishment,” says Music4Life Co-Founder and Chairman/CEO David Endicott, “especially when you realize that we basically did in just six months what had taken us the entire previous 12 months to do.”

The program delivered 240 ready-to-play musical instruments to Auburn, Bremerton, Edmonds, Everett, Highline, Kent, Marysville, Northshore, Seattle and Shoreline Public Schools

Each instrument has a remaining useful life of three-to-15 years, meaning that multiple students may benefit from its use.

"And the sad fact is that, in today’s pandemic economy, many families cannot even afford to rent a musical instrument. So Music4Life is just as much an equal opportunity program as it is an instrumental music program.”

Ready-to-play musical instruments are provided to these school districts for use by students in any musical activity they choose, as long as they stay enrolled in that public school district.

“We figure that the more they use them, the better they’ll get,” Endicott says. “If they leave the school district for any reason, such as graduation or the family moves, the instrument needs to be returned to the school district so another student can benefit from its use.”

“Local enthusiasts who share our values of service to ‘kids,’ ‘instrumental music’ or ‘education’ are welcome to join us,” Endicott says.

A bright side of Coronavirus

Saturday, June 6, 2020

Let’s look at the bright side (there’s not much) of this coronavirus health emergency.

One thing it’s doing for us is that it’s making quarantine time available to do some things that we wouldn’t have accomplished. Such as clean-up our garages, attics or closets.

In the process, you may have come upon a long-unused musical instrument that can be recycled and put to use by some student in our public schools.

These instruments can be made available to Music4Life™, the Puget Sound non-profit that acquires musical instruments from adults who no longer need them.

The organization gets the instruments repaired, if possible, and provides them to ten participating public school districts for use by elementary-aged students of low income families.

Music4Life operates programs supporting Auburn, Bremerton, Edmonds, Everett, Highline, Kent, Northshore, Seattle and Shoreline Public Schools. Instrument donors understand that the highest and best use of their musical instruments is to put them back into play.

Students attending Shoreline Public Schools need some of these instruments, whether trumpets, clarinet, violins, cellos or otherwise.

“We’ve been told we’re one of the best musical instrument recycling programs around,” says Ken Noreen, Chairman of the Shoreline Music4Life Booster Club.
“The reason this is so important is because research shows that students who participate in instrumental music programs do better in math, science, history, literature, computer science, international languages, reading, writing and other academic disciplines,” Noreen says.
“This is in addition to what they learn in terms of teamwork and self-discipline.”

“All this is true, unless their parents can’t afford to get them a musical instrument in the first place. And in today’s economy, many parents can’t afford to rent a musical instrument.
"To this extent, Music4Life is just as much an ‘education program’ as it is an instrumental music program.”

One recent national report found that half of all public school students are from income-eligible families that qualify for participation in the Free-and-Reduced-Lunch program. The Puget Sound area is no exception.

“Our hope is that adults who know about Shoreline Music4Life will donate their musical instruments to us now so we can get them repaired over the summertime,” Noreen says. “An instrument Donor Form that must accompany the instrument is available for downloading on our website.”

Music4Life™ is supported in part by grants from 4Culture (formerly the Seattle-King County Arts Commission); the Knossos Foundation; the Hazel Miller Foundation, various local Rotary clubs; the Auburn, Highline, Kent and Northshore Schools Foundations; as well as by the law firm of Preston Garvey; Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Theatre Group, Encore Media Group, Lamar Advertising (the billboard company), Classical KING FM 98.1, the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

Also Kennelly Keys Music stores, Ted Brown Music, Hammond Ashley Violins in Issaquah, Bigfoot Music in Arlington, the Guitar Center in Seattle’s U District and others.

For more information or to donate an instrument to Music4Life, contact DavidEndicott@Live.com , call 206-409-3275 or go to our website. Instrument donation forms are available online, as well as at designated instrument drop-off sites.

Shoreline Rotary to hear about Music4Life program - Wednesday on Zoom

Music4Life presentation at Shoreline Rotary Wednesday

Join in the fun of a Zoom Rotary Meeting Wednesday morning, April 15, 2020. The meeting starts at 7:30am with Andrew ringing the bell.

All Friends and Rotarians Welcome!

After club doings and the virtual Goose, we welcome David Endicott, the president of Music4Life, a District 5030-wide program begun by David, Ken Noreen and others who recognize the importance of fostering a love and understanding of music in young people.

Music4Life’s mission is to “provide donated and repaired musical instruments at no charge to public school districts for use by students in need.”
But it really is much more than that. As we have learned from our own experiences with music, and just as the Music4Life website states, “music education helps a person lead a richer, fuller, more meaningful life — and an arts-rich community is a more desirable place to live.”

David, a member and current president of the Puget Sound Passport Rotary Club, will give us an update on Music4Life projects. Here’s another great way that Rotary makes a difference in our community - come and see our friend, David, or meet him for the first time, virtually. See you Wednesday!

May Is “Music4Life Month” in King and Snohomish Counties

Thursday, May 9, 2019

May is “Music4Life Month” say County Executives Dow Constantine and Dave Somers, as well as the mayors and city councils of several cities in King and Snohomish Counties.

The program kicks-off a month-long effort to acquire “lovingly used” musical instruments that can be repaired and provided to nine public school districts for use by students in need.

Music4Life™ is the Seattle-based non-profit that acquires musical instruments from adults who no longer need them, gets them repaired and then provides them to participating public school districts for use by elementary-aged students of low income families.

Besides Seattle Public Schools, Music4Life also operates programs supporting Auburn, Central Kitsap, Edmonds, Everett, Highline, Kent, Northshore and Shoreline Public Schools. Instrument donors understand that their highest and best use is to put them back into play. With adequate resources, Music4Life also buys new musical instruments for school districts.

“Summer is when we have to focus on getting used musical instruments repaired and ready-to-play so that students this fall can start to use them as soon as they are enrolled in school,” says David Endicott, co-founder and president of Music4Life™

“We’re very grateful to Dow Constantine, Dave Somers and the mayors and city council members of our participating communities for their support in drawing attention to this critical educational need.”

Proclamations declaring city support for the Music4Life initiative have been enacted by Des Moines, Lake Forest Park, Kent and Shoreline in King County and by Edmonds, Everett and Mill Creek in Snohomish County.

Endicott expressed thanks to the mayors and city councils of those communities for supporting the initiative that’s coordinated with billboard (Lamar Advertising), radio (Classical KING FM 98.1) and major arts publications (Encore Media Group).

“The reason this is so important is because research shows that students who participate in instrumental music programs do better in math, science, history, literature, computer science, international languages, reading, writing and other academic disciplines,” Endicott says. “This is in addition to what they learn in terms of teamwork and self-discipline.

“Our hope is that adults who know of Music4Life will donate their musical instruments to us now so we can get them repaired over the summertime,” Endicott says.
“An instrument Donor Form that must accompany the instrument is available here."

Music4Life enjoys the support of notable music advocates and other community leaders. Gerard Schwarz, world-renowned conductor laureate of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, has endorsed the program, saying,

“This wonderful program begins with children in elementary school at a time when, if they’re interested and talented in any way, they have the greatest chance of success. Many people tell me of the impact that direct knowledge of instrumental music has had on their lives. We intend to give this advantage to all our children.”

Also by the law firm of Garvey Schubert Barer; Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Theatre Group, Encore Media Group, Lamar Advertising (the billboard company), Classical KING FM 98.1, the Edmonds Center for the Arts, Kennelly Keys Music stores, Ted Brown Music, Hammond Ashley Violins in Issaquah, the Guitar Center stores and others.

At the Shoreline Arts Festival on Saturday, June 25, David Endicott of Music4Life presented a flute and a new 4/4 (full sized) violin to music teacher Leann Rozema, Superintendent Miner’s representative to Music4Life.

And on Wednesday, June 28, he presented a very unusual convertible (slide/valve) trombone to Shoreline Schools that was accepted for Leann by Shorecrest Office Manager Marlys Pickrell.

Marlys Pickrell holds the covertable trombone
This brings the total of ready-to-play musical instruments delivered to Shoreline Public Schools since Sept. 1, 2016 to 34.  Their estimated fair market value is $17,059.

More are on the way before we close our year out on August 31st.  Our goal is to deliver as many instruments as possible to Shoreline and our other participating school districts before school starts.

During the Festival Endicott took in a trombone, an acoustic guitar, a violin, a flute, and numerous financial donations.

The money will be used to refurbish the instruments, which will then be donated to one of the school districts affiliated with Music4Life.

"We want every child to have a chance to play an instrument, regardless of their family's financial situation."

Endicott was interviewed by KING TV on Saturday as part of the Shoreline Arts Festival. The segment aired Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Donate used musical instruments at Folklife

Wednesday, May 24, 2017

The 2017 Folklife Festival will be your opportunity to put that musical instrument in your garage or attic back into play.

Donations of “lovingly used” instruments will be accepted by representatives of Music4Life™ at the Seattle Center event on Memorial Day weekend.

Music4Life provides musical instruments to participating schools for students in need. The Seattle-based non-profit acquires instruments from adults who no longer need them, gets them repaired (if possible) and then provides them to participating public school districts for use by students in need.

Besides Seattle Public Schools, Music4Life also operates programs supporting Edmonds, Everett, Highline, Mukilteo and Shoreline Public Schools. The program acquires used instruments from those who understand that their highest and best use is to put them back into play. Music4Life also accepts donations to help pay for instrument repairs.

“This Music4Life partnership with the Folklife Festival is a tremendous opportunity to connect with the musicians and audience attending Folklife,” says David Endicott, Music4Life Co-Founder and President/COO.
“If you have a clarinet, a violin or some other musical instrument stored somewhere, bring it to Folklife for donation to Music4Life.”

May 26-29, 2017 at Seattle Center.

CORRECTION: Music4Life has provided 24 instruments to Shoreline Schools this year

Thursday, May 18, 2017

Correction: In the original publication of this story, the headline said that eight instruments had been donated this year. Actually, 24 instruments have been donated in 2017, including the recent delivery of eight. Information in the story was correct.

David Endicott, Co-Founder and President/COO of Music4Life™reports that during the months of February, March and April, Music4Life™ delivered eight ready-to-play musical instruments to Shoreline Public Schools.

They included two violins, one double French horn, two keyboards (normally used to support choral groups), two electric guitars and one drum set.

Also delivered were four clarinet cases, three clarinet mouthpieces and four trumpet mouthpieces requested by the school district, which were counted for value but not counted as “musical instruments.”

This brings the total number of instruments delivered to Shoreline Public Schools since September 1, 2016 to 24, including an alto sax; a cello; three clarinets; four flutes; a trombone; three trumpets; two violins; two electric guitars with amplifiers; two double French horns; three keyboards and a drum set, all valued at $12,240.

Music4Life™collects donated musical instruments, has them refurbished, and donates them to school districts so kids whose families can't afford instruments can have the opportunity to participate in music programs.

They accept financial donations to help defray the cost of refurbishing instruments.

They have volunteer groups that work with six different school districts, including Shoreline.

To donate, see the webpage.

Music4Life™ is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Contributions to Music4Life™ are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Music4Life™'s tax identification number is 26-4733898.
