Shoreline Trillium Heritage Awards: Doug Ito;
North Seattle Trillium Award:  Jenna Gearhart.

As part of its Preservation Recognition Program, on Saturday, November 10, 2018 the Shoreline Historical Museum gave its 13th Annual Trillium Heritage Awards to four deserving nominees in North Seattle, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline.

All of the award winners have worked to keep the historical integrity of their buildings intact, giving their surrounding communities a feeling of depth and meaning that might otherwise have been lost.

The award for North Seattle went to the La Ba Te Yah Youth Home at 9010 13th Ave. NW, owned by United Indians of All Tribes.

Program director Jenna Gearhart received the award on behalf of the organization. The La Ba Te Yah Youth Home was built in 1930 as the Lebanon House, a place for young women down on their luck.

Because of the Depression and lack of funds, ownership of the building changed and it went through several transitions over the years: it became a convalescent center, a psychiatric hospital, and an alcohol treatment center, finally coming full circle to its initial use as a safe place for young people in 1991.

Throughout all of the changes, the building itself has been maintained as an iconic neighborhood centerpiece, lending a real sense of historical character to the area.

Accepting the award for a 100 year-old historic building in Lake Forest Park was Tiffany Salerno, owner of the 1918 Cooper/Niles home at 3710 NE 189th Pl.

The home was once part of the 10 acre estate of the Hillandale School for Girls. Both buildings were built for Frank B. Cooper, Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools, and his wife Margaret, who opened the girl’s boarding school in the larger building on the grounds in about 1928.

Frank Cooper’s son is said to have lived in the smaller house, and may have taught at the boarding school for a time. The house was purchased in 1936 by the Niles, where they lived for 22 years.

The Trillium Heritage Award for the Shoreline area went to two side-by-side homes - one built in 1898, at 2531 NW 195th Pl., and one built in 1900 at 2525 NW 195th Pl. Both buildings began life as commercial structures: the earlier building was Richmond Beach’s first real post office, and the second building was the James Holloway Grocery.

These two buildings are just two of at least five structures that once existed on Market Street (NW 195th Pl.) that were built by John T. Holloway. This constitutes the core of the Holloway Historical District. The awards were accepted by owner Doug Ito for the post office building, and owner Lauren Caldwell for the grocery building. These dignified buildings continue to reflect the community’s historic nature as a commercial center.

The Shoreline Historical Museum’s Trillium Heritage Awards Program encourages excellence in the maintenance of historic buildings in keeping with their original style. Congratulations to the 2018 winners!

American Legion Post 227 visits the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum

Sunday, February 11, 2018

From left Jerry Pickard, Justin Spielmann, Larry Fischer.

Text and photos by Jerry Pickard

On Tuesday, January 23, 2018 Post Commander Larry Fischer and Post Historian Jerry Pickard traveled to Paine Field to meet Education Coordinator Justin Spielmann at the Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Museum.

Commander Fischer had met docent Paul Miller, a twenty year Air Force veteran, at a Veterans Day event in Edmonds.

Mr. Miller invited Cmdr. Fischer to visit the Flying Heritage Museum to tour the facility during his Friday shift and take information as a Post presenter of the museum.

Russian trainer bi-plane (restored)

Mr. Miller set up a meeting with Justin Spielmann, Education Coordinator at the Museum.

Pratt and Whitney R-2800-79. Cut away training engine.

We met Mr. Spielmann at the entrance to the Museum. Commander Fischer exchanged paperwork with Mr. Spielmann, who then gave a tour of the facility.

Japanese Type 95 Ha-Go Tank (battle Damaged)

We saw many beautifully restored aircraft and combat armor pieces, some restored to new condition and some showing battle damage.

FQ-1D Corsair Fighter aircraft. Navy and Marine Corps flew these
very successfully against the Japanese in the Pacific War

The tour was very interesting with many aircraft restored to flight status and flown during the summer airshows. Many more were on static display.

Bell UH-1B Iroquois Gunship commonly known as a "HUEY" to the troops.

I highly recommend a visit to the Museum if you have an interest in aircraft and armor. There are many related pieces of equipment on display in two buildings. It can take a few hours to see everything.

They are located at 3407 109th St SW, Everett 98204. Their web address is FlyingHeritage.com

As part of its Preservation Recognition Program, on Saturday, November 11, 2017, the Shoreline Historical Museum gave its 12th Annual Trillium Heritage Awards to three deserving contestants in North Seattle, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline.

All of the award winners have worked to keep the historical integrity of their buildings intact, giving their surrounding communities depth and meaning that might otherwise have been lost.

North Seattle winner: 3911 NE 135th St

The award for North Seattle went to Catherine Walker, owner of a 1928 home constructed with the generous portions of an English country cottage estate. Clifford and Frances Schonacker built the house and a poultry barn, and planted an orchard. The Walkers purchased it in 1965 and restored it to its original glory.

Accepting the award for a historic building in Lake Forest Park were Harry and Baiki Khurana, owners of the 1916 craftsman bungalow at 18211 Ballinger Way NE. One the first homes in Lake Forest Park, it is known as “the Raymond House,” where the family lived until the 1980s - first, Edward and Annabelle Raymond, and then their son Ernie and wife Thelma.

The Trillium Heritage Award for the Shoreline area went to the Steed family for the “Hauan House” located at 19822 15th Ave NW. Built possibly a little earlier than 1901, this treasure was the residence of one of the earliest families to settle in Richmond Beach. The Steeds are also related to the John L. Johnsons, who were neighbors of the Hauans. Leslie Steed has lovingly kept the house in its original condition, both inside and out.

The Shoreline Historical Museum’s Trillium Heritage Awards raise awareness of the community’s roots, and encourages excellence in the maintenance and perpetuation of historic buildings in accordance with their original style. Congratulations to the 2017 winners.

At the museum: 100th Anniversary of the Lowering of Lake Washington

Sunday, July 23, 2017

1915 before Lake Washington was lowered
Photo #1397: The Wurdemann and Rion homes present a stately picture on Bothell Way in 1915, before the lowering of the lake. The photographer is standing at the end of the ferry pier. At the time, the distance between the railroad tracks and the shore was too narrow for home construction.

When the Government Locks (aka Hiram Chittenden Locks or Ballard Locks) were cut through in 1916, and the ship canal between Lake Union and Lake Washington was completed, the water in Lake Washington cascaded into Lake Union, leaving its main drainage, the Black River, without a flow, and permanently baring shoreline that had never before seen the light of day.

The level of Lake Washington was lowered nine feet.

The Shoreline Historical Museum's exhibit “High and Dry: The 100th Anniversary of the Lowering of Lake Washington and its Effects” is on display now at the museum, 18501 Linden Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Come view amazing photos documenting this era in Lake Forest Park, one of the communities most affected by the lowering of the lake. Museum exhibits and programs are supported by 4Culture, the City of Shoreline and the members and partners of the Museum.

For some, it was a real estate dream come true; for others, it was the most tragic event to ever occur.

The Lake Forest Park Waterfront Addition was platted by Ole Hanson's North Seattle Improvement Company in 1917. However, it took a number of years after the lowering of the lake before the soggy property was usable.

Photo #764 courtesy Shoreline Historical Museum
In 1924, Hjalmer and Anna Johanson were the first to purchase property in that plat. The whole family posed for a picture, celebrating where their new home would be built, at 17368 Beach Drive NE. From left to right: Einar Johanson, Louisa Johanson, Hazel Johanson, Hjalmer, Bert Hilmo, and Anna and Helga Hilmo.

Local garden featured in Times article - and local tour this Saturday

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

The gardens of Paul and Claire Grace of Shoreline were featured in an article last weekend in The Seattle Times' Pacific Magazine. (A Shoreline garden provides a bounty of food, plus spaces for dining, strolling and artwork)

The article, by Valerie Easton, starts with this:

PAUL AND CLAIRE Grace’s potager (traditional kitchen garden) is so productive that the Shoreline couple shares at harvest time with neighbors and the local food bank. As bountiful as the potager is, peas, beans and tomatoes aren’t all that’s happening in the Grace garden. The half-acre property is divided into rooms, each with its own feel and uses, including spaces for dining, strolling and viewing artwork.

The article, while interesting, is worth viewing just for the photos.

The home in 1936

However, the house is worth seeing as well, which is why the Shoreline Historical Museum chose it for their Trillium Award House and Garden Tour.

The Shoreline Historical Museum is presenting, on Saturday September 17, a tour of the Trillium Heritage Award-winning Perkins/Haworth/Grace Estate, which includes both garden and historic home.

Discover the secrets of this 90 year-old beauty, nestled in the Richmond Highlands back when a few people saw this area as a hide-away from the city, and others saw it as an opportunity to realize the American Dream.

Tickets are on sale on the Shoreline Historical Museum website.

Go to the website or call 206-542-7111 for information. Advance ticket sales only; no day-of-event sales.

Light refreshments and complimentary champagne will be served in the garden - judging from the photos - well worth the price of the tour.

Shoreline Historical Museum Trillium Awards for Historic Buildings - deadline coming up

Friday, August 19, 2016

Richmond Masonic Hall
The Shoreline Historical Museum’s 11th annual Trillium Heritage Awards nominations are open until September 30, 2016.

The purpose of the awards is to raise awareness of the community’s past and recognize outstanding examples of historic architecture, as well as encourage excellence in maintenance and perpetuation of historic buildings.

These awards are presented by the Shoreline Historical Museum to property owners in Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and North Seattle. Each of these areas will receive one award for the home or structure that has been well-maintained and is best preserved in its original style of construction. The building must have been built before December 31, 1940.

Anyone may nominate a building for this award by completing the nomination form and submitting it to the Museum. The form is available online or directly from the Museum at 18501 Linden Ave N, Shoreline. Each nomination requires the signature of the owner of the property. The award does not affect property taxation or any other legal status.

In the past, awards have been made to a great variety of buildings, including a log cabin, a mansion, and a historic clubhouse. The awards are presented at the Annual Meeting of the Museum, in November.

Property owners are always thrilled to receive this recognition because maintaining the original style of a historic structure usually requires a lot of effort and extra expense. The presence of this built heritage in our community is a significant component of our interesting and diverse environment!

Preserving, renovating, and building veterans and heritage facilities in Shoreline and Kenmore

King County Councilmember
Rod Dembowski
King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski secures Building for Culture grants

Projects in Shoreline and Kenmore will receive funding to help build, maintain, and preserve arts, heritage, and cultural facilities in these communities.

“This was a unique opportunity to make game-changing investments in our arts and heritage organizations,” said Metropolitan King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski.
“Building for Culture dollars will make possible long desired capital investments in the Shoreline Historical Museum, fund completion of the Shoreline Veterans Memorial, help preserve the Richmond Masonic Center, and continue renovation of the Kenmore Community Club.
"These organizations have a tremendous impact on our community, and these grants will ensure they continue to serve our residents for years to come.”

Rod Dembowski and Dwight Stevens, Chair of the Shoreline Veterans Association, at the construction of the Shoreline Veterans Memorial Plaza, outside of Shoreline City Hall.

The funding to build, maintain, expand, preserve, and improve new and existing cultural facilities was allocated from the Building for Culture program and was unanimously approved by the County Council. Building for Culture is a partnership between King County and 4Culture, King County’s cultural services agency, using bonds backed by the hotel-motel tax.

“Thanks to Councilmember Dembowski’s continued advocacy, we are able to complete the Shoreline Veterans Memorial,” said Dwight Stevens, WWII Veteran and Chair of the Shoreline Veterans Association.
“The late Frank Moll and I conceived the idea for the Shoreline Veterans Memorial six years ago, as a way to honor the men and women who have served our country. It’s heartening to know that the $20,000 grant from King County will make this dream a reality.”

Dembowski has secured a total of $40,000 in County funding for the Shoreline Veterans Memorial.

Shoreline Historical Museum expansion plans
“The Shoreline Historical Museum is thrilled to receive a $250,000 grant – about 25 percent of our construction project budget – from King County,” said Vicki Stiles, Executive Director of the Shoreline Historical Museum.

“We thank Councilmember Rod Dembowski for supporting this critical funding. Our new building will allow us to continue our mission of preserving, recording, and interpreting the rich heritage of the Shoreline area.”

In addition to the funds supporting projects in District 1, Councilmember Dembowski worked to ensure a $200,000 grant for Seattle Repertory Theatre was included in the final project list.

“I would like to extend my appreciation to Councilmember Rod Dembowski and the entire County Council for their support of Seattle Repertory Theatre,” said Jeffrey Herrmann, Managing Director of Seattle Repertory Theatre. “The funds will go to needed renovations, that all of King County will be able to enjoy.”

will receive funds for renovation

The facilities receiving funding in District 1 are:

Agency/Government/Organization
Project
Grant Award
City of Shoreline Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services
Shoreline Veterans Recognition Plaza
$20,000
Kenmore Community Club
2016 Kenmore Community Club Interior Rehabilitation
$10,000
Richmond Masonic Center Association
Foundation and Kitchen Renovation
$14,000
Shoreline Historical Museum
New Collections Facility and Research Center
$250,000

The bonds supporting these projects are made possible by early retirement of the Kingdome debt. State law requires that hotel-motel tax revenues King County collects this year after repayment of the Kingdome debt be directed to arts and cultural programs.

“Trillium Award Winners 2015”

From left: Nancy and Carl Hansen holding the North Seattle Trillium Heritage Award; Robert Haig and Alison Haig, recipients of the Lake Forest Park Trillium Heritage Award; and Ken Callahan and Jerry Parton accepting the Trillium Heritage Award for the Shoreline Masonic Center.

As part of its Preservation Recognition Program, the Shoreline Historical Museum Saturday gave its 10th Annual Trillium Heritage Awards to three deserving contestants in North Seattle, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline. All of the award winners have worked to keep the historical integrity of their buildings intact, giving their surrounding communities depth and meaning that might otherwise have been lost. We congratulate the following award recipients:

The award for North Seattle went to Carl and Nancy Hansen for their historic Summer House at 14410 3rd Ave. NW, on the south side of the Seattle Golf Club. The beautiful tudor-style home was built in 1928 by Bessie and Charles Pye Burnett, who spared no expense in the details of the home, such as Batchelder art tiles in the floor, hardwood floors and elegant formal spaces, indoors and out.

Mr. Burnett was an important real estate broker, and the Burnetts were well-known in Seattle’s high society, attending fundraisers and gatherings. In 1932, their son, Charles Pye Burnett, Jr., an up-and-coming attorney, married Frances Green, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Green. While originally built as a get-away, it appears that the Burnetts eventually made the Summer House their permanent residence, preferring the quiet life “out in the country” near The Highlands, to that of Capital Hill, their previous area of residence.

Accepting the award for a historic building in Lake Forest Park were Alison Haig and Robert Haig, owners of the 1939 Lake House built by Albert and Claire Kollmorgan at 15028 - Beach Drive NE.

There were few other houses nearby when the cabin-style home was built in the southern reaches of Lake Forest Park. While Bothell Way was nearby, there were no roads to the properties along the lake in that area. Mrs. Kollmorgan told the Haig family, who are only the second owners of the house, that all of the building materials had to be barged in. The exterior rough-cut cedar planks, and interior details such as knotty pine walls, fir floors and blacksmith-forged latches and handles give the Lake House its character.

Mr. Kollmorgan was a tailor and part owner of Duncan McGregor fine men’s clothing in Seattle. But his life-long avocation was casting and fly fishing. He was on the board of the Seattle Casting Club and competed in many casting tournaments and fishing derbies. Perhaps building a house on the lake where he could practice casting was his dream.

The Trillium Heritage Award for the Shoreline area was presented to the Shoreline Masonic Center, represented by Jerry Parton and Ken Callahan, members of the Shoreline Lodge #248. The Masonic Center, at 753 - N 185th St. was built in 1922, and has been in continuous operation as a Masonic building since its construction.

The building has been a community gathering place from the beginning, not only for Masonic lodge members and lodge youth activities, but for dozens of community organizations and hundreds of community meetings over the last 93 years.

A good deal of work has gone into repairing and restoring the iconic structure, and Lodge members hope to have everything complete by 2022, when the organization will celebrate the building’s 100th anniversary. The building was awarded King County/Shoreline Landmark status in 2010.

The Shoreline Historical Museum’s Trillium Heritage Awards raise awareness of the community’s roots, and encourages excellence in the maintenance and perpetuation of historic buildings in accordance with their original style. Congratulations again to the 2015 Award recipients.
