Shoreline Historical Museum Trillium award winners revealed

Sunday, November 16, 2014

“Trillium Award Winners 2014” From left: Kyle Roquet of Crista Ministries
with the Trillium Award for a Shoreline building; Betsy Piano and son Josh Piano,
recipients of the Lake Forest Park award; and Pastor David Ness,
holding the North Seattle Trillium Heritage Award.

As part of its Preservation Recognition Program, the Shoreline Historical Museum today, November 15, 2014, gave its 9th Annual Trillium Heritage Awards to three deserving contestants in North Seattle, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline.

All of the award winners have worked to keep the historical integrity of their buildings intact, giving their surrounding communities depth and meaning that might otherwise have been lost.

North Seattle
The award for North Seattle went to the North Seattle Church of the Nazarene, represented by Pastor David Ness, for their historic Higgins Manor House at 13130 5th Ave. NE. At one time the spacious grounds included fruit trees and densely wooded areas over ten acres of property on the southwest edge of Jackson Park Golf Course. The beautiful home was built in 1929 by James and Sara Mae Higgins, who had moved to Seattle in 1921 and were Seattle business financiers. The Higgins won several years of the Seattle Times outdoor Christmas decorations award for the north end. Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Hochfield purchased the house in 1948, and in 1955 Franklin Clinton of Clinton Motors purchased the house.

Lake Forest Park
Accepting the award for a historic building in Lake Forest Park were Betsy Piano and son Josh, who, along with Betsy’s husband George, are the owners and restorers of the 1931 Shippen Art Tile House in the Trafford Park Tracts at 19004 - Lago Pl. NE. There were very few other places nearby when the home was built in what is now the western reaches of Lake Forest Park, and the property must have felt quite secluded. The house was built and decorated by tile magnate Tom Shippen owner of Shippen Tile Contractors. Several families have resided there, including the the Shippens (1931-1938), the Personeus family (1938-1948) and florist Henry Hedberg who purchased the home in 1948.

The Firland Tuberculosis Sanatorium
Walter Henry Administration Building,
now the Martin Center, was built in 1913,
and is the winner of the Shoreline Trillium Heritage Award.

Shoreline
The Trillium Heritage Award for the Shoreline area was presented to CRISTA Ministries, represented by Kyle Roquet, Vice President of Facilities and Construction Management, for the iconic 1913 Walter Henry Administration Building, now known as the Martin Center, at 19303 Fremont Ave. N. The building has served the community well over the last 100 years, from being the hub of the Firland Tuberculosis Sanatorium to its multiple purposes for CRISTA Ministries. The building has also been nominated for inclusion on the Washington State Heritage Register.

The Shoreline Historical Museum’s Trillium Heritage Awards raise awareness of the community’s roots, and encourages excellence in the maintenance and perpetuation of historic buildings in accordance with their original style. Congratulations to the 2014 winners.

Old Roads, Tuberculosis and Murder Saturday at Museum - as well as old racing cars

Race cars at Shoreline Museum

The Shoreline Historical Museum will conduct a walking tour of the historic Hillwood - Richmond Highlands area on Saturday, June 14 as part of their Golden Wheels Day, which goes from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Golden Wheels Racing Pathfinders will hold a One-Day Exhibit of Playland Race Cars and other Historic Vehicles on Saturday, June 14 from 1-3pm where you can see the vehicles and talk to the drivers and owners.

People should meet at the Museum at 1:00pm for the Walk. “The Hillwood History Walk and Brickwalk Talk” will cover the Firlands Way-to-Fremont Avenue-to-185th (or vice versa) part of historic Richmond Highlands and features Old Roads, Tuberculosis and Murder!

The city renamed this neighborhood, but it is part of the original Richmond Highlands area.

Museum Director Vicki Stiles says that "Some people even have birth certificates that say they were born in Richmond Highlands – and they lived on Firlands Way."

The walk takes about an hour and 15 minutes. The route is generally flat, but with some tree roots and uneven pavement, on-street walking in several areas is not suitable for wheelchairs.

The Shoreline Historical Museum is located at the corner of N 185th and Linden Ave N, 18501 Linden Avenue North.

They are available for purchase, just in time for the holidays. Pick yours up at the Museum on the corner of N 185th and Linden Ave N, or call 206-542-7111 for more information.

The award for North Seattle went to recipients Jerry and Mercy Gipson, and daughter Virginia Mallary, owners of what was once the Rest View Sanitarium at 12510 - 6th NW. Built in 1919 on 6th Avenue NW and NW 125th Street in Broadview, the manor took up five acres on the northeast corner. The home was built as a retreat from the cares of the city, and was owned by Dr. and Mrs. Pearl Eugene McCoy from 1922 to 1950.  It became the Rest View University of Chiropractic in the 1930’s.

Accepting the award for a historic building in Lake Forest Park were Ronda and Ray Holmdahl, owners of the 1930 Dutch Colonial in the Seattle Suburban Home Tracts at 14531 - 37th Avenue NE. There were very few other places nearby when the home was built in what is now the very southern reaches of Lake Forest Park, and must have felt very secluded. Several families have resided there, including the A. J. Van Skyhawkes, and it is said that General Lacey Murrow was associated with the house.

The Trillium Heritage Award for the Shoreline area was accepted by Chris Purdy and son Ollie for the iconic Fish family farmhouse at the Queen City Poultry Ranch, at 15710 - Greenwood Avenue N. Built in about 1903, it was the only settled place on Greenwood. Nearly the whole Fish family from “back east” took up residence in the surrounding area. They had one of largest and most modern chicken farms in the Northwest, and people came from everywhere to see the operations. The house was beautifully restored several years ago by Martha Rose Construction, and the Purdy-Strand family was delighted to find a home with such character and history. Several of the Fish family members were on hand to witness the presentation of the award.

The Shoreline Historical Museum’s Trillium Heritage Awards raise awareness of the community’s roots, and encourages excellence in the maintenance and perpetuation of historic buildings in accordance with their original style. Congratulations to the 2013 winners.

Help your young student make a memory at the Shoreline Historical Museum Saturday

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Make an autograph book at the
Shoreline Historical Museum

How do you make a memory?

Today, in our digital world, material objects that remind us of good times are sometimes given short shrift. But a good way to make a lasting memory is to create something tangible that can be shared with others, and then kept throughout a lifetime!

Autograph books, once used by every school child at the end of the school year, are a great way to remember friends.

Come to the Museum on May 25th and let your young student craft their very own end-of-the-school-year autograph book. Long after digital photos and texting have disappeared into the ether-world, they’ll be able to cherish their autograph book forever.

Free activity - take home what you make.

Saturday May 25, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm,
Shoreline Historical Museum, 18501 - Linden Ave N, Shoreline. 206-542-7111

New Exhibit Opening at the Shoreline Historical Museum

Saturday, April 27, 2013

Shoreline Historical Museum

Shoreline Historical Museum
N 185th and Linden Ave N.
May 4th at 1pm
Connections:  Surface Water, Piped Water, Wastewater

Throughout the history of humankind, water has been, and continues to be, a most important topic.

Where do we get it?  How do we deal with it when we have too much? Where do we put it when it's "used?" What can we do when we have too little?

We have to have water, but water can also make us crazy. The rules of water are very black and white: it always finds the path of least resistance, and it always runs downhill! Lifetimes have been spent trying to change those rules, or at least fight them.

Join us at the Museum on Saturday May 4th at 1:00pm for a fun and informative pictorial look at the history of water in northwest King County. Water, and other light refreshments, will be served!

Memories of Mrs. McGinnis' Goat

Sunday, March 31, 2013

Mrs. McGinnis’ Goat, 1912 (Richmond Highlands), Photo #SHM 554
Courtesy of Shoreline Historical Museum

The photo of a goat which ran in last Thursday's SAN (Diggin' Shoreline is Dishing the Dirt) from the Shoreline Historical Museum prompted this recollection from Sandra Reynolds, historian for Ronald United Methodist Church.

The picture of the goat was taken on the old Ronald Methodist Church porch. The goat belonged to a Mrs. McGinnis and it spent a good deal of its time on the church porch.
One day the teachers at Ronald School across the street left the front door open because it was a warm day. The goat went into the cloak room and ate all of the children's lunches. Mrs. McGinnis had to make soup for the whole school that day.

Shoreline student participating in Phase One of the Washington Aerospace Scholars Program at The Museum of Flight

Friday, February 15, 2013

Phase One class poses with space trainer
at The Museum of Flight
The class includes Olivia Hume of Shorewood

Now in its seventh year, The Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) is pleased to announce that Olivia Humes of Shorewood High School is a current participant in Phase One of the 2012-13 program.

The WAS program is a free, competitive, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education program for high school juniors from across Washington State and is affiliated with NASA Johnson Space Center’s National High School Aerospace Scholars program and with the University of Washington’s Department of Earth and Space Science.

WAS Phase One participants have the option to receive five University of Washington credits in Space and Space Travel (ESS 102) upon on their successful completion of the online WAS curriculum and this course will satisfy the Natural World area of knowledge requirement for graduation from the University of Washington.

The program’s primary goal is to excite and prepare student to pursue careers pathways in STEM fields because the statistics for STEM education in Washington state are grim: Washington ranks 4th in the nation for technology-based corporations and yet 46th for participation in science and engineering graduate programs.

By using a distance-learning curriculum designed in partnership with NASA and the University of Washington, WAS gives students the opportunity to explore topics such as the history of human spaceflight and the impacts of space weather on future human exploration of the universe.

Since 2006, over 1,700 juniors, representing every Washington state legislative district, have participated in the online distance learning curriculum offered by WAS, and over 860 have completed a six-day Summer Residency held at The Museum of Flight. Our Summer Residency alumni association tracks scholars after they graduate high school and over 70% of WAS alumni are pursuing a college degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) field.

Olivia was one of 285 student applicants from 117 different public, private and home-school organizations who applied in fall of 2012 to participate, and is now one of the 218 students still participating in the program.

Having already completed five online lessons, Olivia will spend the next three months continuing to compete for one of the 160 slots available in a Summer Residency session held at The Museum of Flight this June and July. To qualify for the Summer Residency, students must satisfactorily complete ten online lessons, consisting of research essays, space-related math problems, and detailed graphics that illustrate their ideas. If Olivia moves on to the summer residency experience, they will collaborate with other student participants on the design of a human mission to Mars guided by professional engineers, scientists, university students and certified educators.

There is no cost to students to participate in the WAS program thanks to the continuing support from Governor Chris Gregoire, The Boeing Company, The Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium, The GenCorp Foundation, BAE Systems and many individual donors. The Museum of Flight partners with WAS to host both the program administration and the Summer Residency sessions.

Washington Aerospace Scholars applications for the 2013-14 program cycle will be available late summer 2013 at www.museumofflight.org/was.

WAS participants must be high school juniors, United States citizens and Washington State residents with a 3.0 minimum grade-point-average.
