Mandarin in Shoreline Schools survives through Hua Zhang

Monday, July 3, 2023

Hua Zhang, a longtime Shoreline resident and Mandarin teacher
By Estelle Lee

In her 22 years of living in Shoreline, Hua Zhang has served the community as a dedicated teacher of Chinese Mandarin since 2006. That year, Hua started Shoreline School District’s first Mandarin program with classes and before and after-school clubs at Meridian Park Elementary School.

Since then, Hua has been key in expanding the education of Chinese language and culture to the rest of Shoreline. When Mandarin classes started at Shoreline middle and high schools in 2013, the district’s PIO Craig Degginger told Hua she “should be proud of the role [she] played in establishing [the interest in Mandarin] throughout the district.”

Hua presents at Ridgecrest Elementary School
Beyond schools, Hua has brought Mandarin to other community spaces for Shoreline area residents. For the King County Library System, Hua hosts weekly online Chinese story times (available here) that were in-person prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the last two years, she has also shared Lunar New Year presentations for King County libraries and City of Shoreline staff on Zoom, when she could no longer dance for celebrators in person.

Hua also adapted to the screen in Shorewood High School’s 2019-2020 Mandarin IV class. It was the last year of Shoreline’s secondary school Mandarin programs, canceled due to low enrollment.

Hua shares stories from behind her computer screen

Hua began teaching that year when two previous Mandarin teachers at Shorewood had left for different jobs. It was difficult for the district to find someone who would teach for one year at a canceled Mandarin program.

Luckily, Hua stepped in. “Over half Shorewood Mandarin IV students started Mandarin learning with me when they were [in elementary school],” she shared.

Thinking about her Shorewood students, Hua added: “The last Mandarin class for Mandarin IV students, I tried to smile at my students as [usual], but I teared like rain in front of students during the Zoom class. My heart was painful to say goodbye to those wonderful students … who have been so eager to learn more.”

Hua sends her Shorewood students a virtual message during online school
Unfortunately, similar online alternatives for Hua’s elementary before and after-school programs were difficult to replicate when COVID-19 sent students into lockdown. The children no longer had the face-to-face conversations necessary in practicing the complex language.

Hua teaching at Meridian Park pre-pandemic
With Shoreline’s programs stopped indefinitely at all levels, Hua began teaching Mandarin at North Seattle’s Lakeside School in 2022. There, she continued to incorporate her passion for Chinese culture — cooking dumplings, grinding ink from inkstone, making lanterns, parading under a dragon for Lunar New Year — into her curriculum.

Not only did Hua introduce Lakeside students to cultural events that most had never participated in before, she touched hearts and inspired a deeper love for Chinese culture.

One of her middle school students was unable to come to school for some time because of a sick relative. Still, a day after his loved one passed, he asked his mom to be rushed back to Seattle from out of town because he had been looking forward to Hua’s Lunar New Year dragon dance parade.

At Lakeside, Hua grew just as much as her students. She explained that she never felt like a teacher but “a freshman” with all that she learned.

“In the first few months, I woke up at 3am every morning to explore and try new instructional techniques and create new modules and new curriculums for class,” she remembered. At the end of her time at the school, Hua even created a memory book as a gift for her middle school students.

But this March, Hua’s popular Mandarin programs have finally returned to Shoreline -- at Meridian Park Elementary where her journey began.

Hua credits the school’s PTSA volunteers who have been dedicated to supporting Mandarin classes since the beginning.

“It has been my pleasure to work with Shoreline school kids again,” she said.

this year’s multicultural festival

With her Meridian Park programs back up and running, Hua has quickly immersed herself back into work with the elementary students.

Her dedication was evident in Meridian Park’s multicultural festival earlier this month.

Students sang and danced happily to Chinese rhymes and songs like “Two Tigers,” “Hello,” and “Listen to Me, Thank You!”

Besides Meridian Park’s principal and a class parent volunteer, Hua’s former student Liz Bennett stood by the end of the stage to congratulate the young performers. Liz found her passion for Mandarin in elementary school under Hua’s guidance when she did the same performance.

For the past three years, Liz has continued to learn Mandarin herself outside of school.

Liz is a testament to one of Hua’s chief teaching philosophies. Hua believes that students can better engage with Mandarin when introduced from a young age, during their most crucial period of language development. To encourage students toward a lifetime of learning Mandarin, Hua is currently thinking through an immersion Montessori Mandarin program for preschoolers.

Though Mandarin is no longer offered in Shoreline middle and high schools, Hua has not lost hope for older students. She is determined to fight for the language in the Shoreline School District, no matter how many setbacks she expects.

“I am like [the programs’] mother. I hope it survives the most,” Hua explained. “This is my persistent love and responsibility to Shoreline students, as well as the eternal belief and pursuit of sharing Chinese language, culture, and art in my heart. Even if there is only one child in Shoreline who wants to learn Mandarin, I will help.”

Juneteenth Freedom Festival to be held June 19, 2023 at Lynnwood's Cedar Valley Community School

Sunday, June 11, 2023

Juneteenth Freedom Festival, Monday June 19, 2023 from 10am to 3pm at Lynnwood’s Cedar Valley Community School.

“An effective way to inspire hope and courage in youth of color and the communities they live in is to remind them of the powerful legacy they have inherited and celebrate the culture of life that will sustain them. That is what Juneteenth is all about,” said Olympia Edwards, who is the host of the event.

Edwards is the founder and CEO of Project Girl Mentoring, a Lynnwood area nonprofit designed to create a safe place for young women of color to become better versions of themselves.

The celebration will be held at the Cedar Valley Community School, 19200 56th Ave W, Lynnwood, WA, and will feature a variety of celebration activities for children, families, and civic-minded citizens throughout every corner of the community.

Highlighted performances include Soul Jambalaya marching band, a drum circle, Daughters of Royalty Dance Drill and Dance Ensemble, VSP Step Team from Meadowdale, Umunezero Rwandan Dance troupe, Zumba, and Fitness Hula Hoop demonstrations.

Little Mermaid and Princess Tiana characters are expected to make an appearance for the young at heart.

Blood pressure, BMI, and cholesterol checks at the Mini Health Fair will also be available along with mental health care advocates to answer questions and provide supporting information.

“This is a festival for citizens of all ages and everyone is welcome,” said Edwards,  adding Mayors Christine Frizzell of Lynnwood, Mike Nelson of Edmonds, and Keith Scully of Shoreline will provide special remarks on behalf of their cities.

This year’s legal holiday of festivities is being jointly sponsored by Verdant Health Commission, Project Girl Mentoring Program, United Healthcare, City of Lynnwood, Edmonds School District and Lift Every Voice Legacy (LEVL).

Juneteenth – also known as Emancipation Day and Freedom Day – marks the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, and informed the last enslaved outpost of African Americans in the Confederate South that they were no longer under bondage.

Shoreline Community College receives federal grant to develop study abroad program in Bolivia for nursing students

Saturday, June 10, 2023

Shoreline Community College (SCC) is one of 34 U.S. colleges and universities in 28 U.S. states to be awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Program, which aims to develop and expand study abroad programs around the world.

“One of our goals is to better connect with our external and local international partners to best serve the diverse northern Seattle area.
"Opportunities like this not only support that goal but also provide wonderful learning opportunities for our faculty and students,” said SCC President Dr. Jack Kahn.

Of the 34 U.S. colleges and universities, eight are community colleges and 13 are minority-serving institutions. The selected proposals will develop new international partnerships, train faculty and staff, internationalize curriculum, engage diverse students in study abroad, broaden the destinations where U.S. students study, and create virtual and hybrid exchanges.

“Increasing and diversifying U.S. students going abroad for educational opportunities, as well as diversifying the places where they study, is a State Department priority,” said Lee Satterfield, Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs.

This IDEAS Program Award will allow Shoreline Community College to develop a new study abroad program for Washington community college nursing students.

The new program leverages a long-standing and successful study/service-learning abroad program in dental hygiene, led by SCC and our non-profit partner in Seattle and Bolivia, Smiles Forever.

“Study abroad programs have been particularly impacted by the pandemic and it is encouraging to see the federal government’s support in supporting their revival.
"U.S. students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, benefit tremendously from these opportunities,” said Samira Pardanani, Associate Vice President, International Education and Global Engagement.

This study abroad program will be unique among community college nursing programs, as study abroad experiences are largely inaccessible for nursing students.

Colleen Ferguson, Special Project Lead, International Engagement had this to say about the program,

“With the IDEAS Program Award, nursing faculty will be supported in developing a new service-learning program to Bolivia that will allow our nursing students the opportunity to practice their unique skills and gain valuable cross-cultural experience.”

The IDEAS Program is a program of the U.S Department of State with funding provided by the United States Government and supported in its implementation by World Learning.

Founded in 1964, Shoreline Community College offers more than 100 rigorous academic and professional/technical degrees and certificates to meet the lifelong learning needs of its diverse students and communities.

Duwamish Tribe Cultural Preservation Officer consults with Shoreline Historical Museum re the Miyawaki Urban Forest History Project

Saturday, March 11, 2023

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connected.
- Chief Seattle

The Shoreline Historical Museum is located at 18501 Linden Ave N, Shoreline WA

By Sally Yamasaki

The Shoreline Historical Museum is in the process of researching the feasibility of planting a Miyawaki Urban Forest in a portion of the open field adjacent to the museum’s buildings. This forest will become the “walls” for subsequent plans to incorporate local history. (see previous article)

Looking at the open field, one could think that the land belongs to the museum alone, however, just as Chief Seattle’s quote reminds us, nothing exists in isolation whether it be our environment or our history.

“If you are near a sacred site or an area where there is a medium to high probability of finding cultural artifacts, and the depth of excavation disturbs the ground in layers that contain peat or alluvium, then depending on the project, the Duwamish and other tribes might request an archaeological review or at least have an inadvertent discovery plan put in place for the earthwork contractor,” according to Nancy Sackman, Cultural Preservation Officer for the Duwamish Tribe.

Kenneth Doutt (Shoreline Historical Museum Executive Director), Nancy Sackman (Cultural Preservation Officer for the Duwamish Tribe), Sarah Phillips (Miyawaki Urban Forest History Project Volunteer).

Sackman came to the Shoreline Historical Museum for a site visit to help the museum learn about the impacts land disruption can have, and the steps it should take to make sure their Miyawaki Urban Forest History Project does not have a deleterious effect on the environment or history below the earth’s surface.

Sackman’s visit was a great reminder of the significance of the history of our past and how it is still very much present in our lives today.

The Shoreline Historical Museum is located at 18501 Linden Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133.

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö pays historic visit to Washington state

Wednesday, March 8, 2023

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Gov. Jay Inslee shake hands to conclude a joint media availability on March 6. The president encouraged Washingtonians and Americans to sustain their support for Ukraine, and to guard for threats to democracy at large. "You do not need to be afraid, but you must always be awake," he said.

His Excellency Sauli Niinistö, President of the Republic of Finland, visited the Washington State Capitol on Monday, March 6, 2023. His address to the Legislature was the first by a foreign head of state in Washington state history.

The president’s visit included a greeting with Gov. Jay Inslee, a performance of the Finnish and American national anthems by the Finnish Choral Society of Seattle, and his remarks to a joint session of the Legislature. Niinistö and Inslee also led a bilateral meeting and hosted a joint media availability.

After the address, Niinistö and Inslee and their delegations met in the governor’s office for the bilateral meeting. The president and governor agreed to deepen the cooperation in the areas of telecommunications, climate change, and port modernization.

Partnership between Finland and the state of Washington will continue, building on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in 2021.

Pilot project to strengthen regional Korean-owned small businesses: Bridging the Digital Divide

Sunday, February 19, 2023

Information session at Shoreline Library Sunday March 5 at 3:30pm
OneEastside SPARK and its partners today announced the launch of the Get Your Business Online Pilot Project targeted at strengthening Korean-owned small businesses in King County.

Funded by a grant from the Washington State Microenterprise Association (WSMA), the pilot project aims to increase the number of businesses with an online presence.

OneEastside SPARK is partnering with BigHug/Korean American Resource Center (KARC) and Restart Partners, including a team from the University of Washington’s Communication Leadership program on this community-driven project.

Surviving the effects of pandemic and current economic uncertainty requires the knowledge of, and access to, digital tools.

The “Get Your Business Online” Program will help business owners by empowering them to build sustainable digital marketing skills. Staff and volunteers are developing in-language, step-by-step, training modules that will be delivered in-person. A series of short, in-language instructional videos will also be produced and shared publicly on YouTube.

"Around 50% of the Korean-owned small businesses that we assisted in Washington state are closed because of COVID-19," said Lori Wada, Executive Director of BigHug/KARC.
“Many of these businesses were lacking or unaware of digital marketing tools that are readily available at no or low cost. Having a digital presence is vital to accessing today’s digitally savvy shoppers and strengthening their resiliency.”

“Our digital economy has created many barriers to business ownership and success, especially for non-English speaking entrepreneurs,” said WSMA Executive Director, Lisa Smith,

“WSMA is excited to support OneEastside SPARK and their collaborating partners on the Get Your Business Online pilot that helps businesses overcome these hurdles and thrive in this age of technology.”

Visit https://karc.bighug.org and https://oneeastside.org/spark for more information or sign up for the upcoming information sessions at https://bit.ly/get-online123.

Support for the Get Your Business Online pilot project was provided in part by the Washington State Microenterprise Association (WSMA), made possible by the Washington State Department of Commerce, and the OneEastside Foundation.
