Mountlake Terrace woman attacked in her home by intruder

Friday, April 20, 2018

MyEdmondsNews.com

Charging papers reveal brutal details about the Monday assault of a Mountlake Terrace woman in the 22400 block of 59th Pl W. (The border with Shoreline is 244th St W)

According to court documents, responding officers found the unresponsive victim, a 32-year-old Mountlake Terrace woman, on the living room floor of a residence with a badly beaten face.

She was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition. (Friends have set up a Go Fund Me page benefiting the victim’s family at this link.) Her 3-year-old daughter was inside the residence at the time of the incident.

Officers contacted 29-year-old Arlington resident Christopher Yacono, who was outside the residence. He told officers he “kicked the front door down and discovered” the victim, according to court documents. He was taken to the Mountlake Terrace police station.

Charging papers allege Yacono became “agitated” and was “yelling and wailing” while at the police department. He later told officers he went to his girlfriend’s house, which is near the victim’s house, to pick up his cell phone. He was sitting in his vehicle outside the victim’s house when “something told him to go into the house” so he knocked on the door. No one answered, so he kicked the door in.

“Yacono said that once in the house, he saw (the victim) in the living room and she screamed,” charging documents say. “Yacono said she began to ‘resist’ and he slammed her head into the wall. She fell to the floor and he slammed her head onto the hardwood floor twice.”

At that point, the victim was unconscious, Yacono said. He told police that he then took a beer from her refrigerator and threw it at her, and then took a cooking pot and hit her again.

Court documents say Yacono told officers he is schizophrenic and said he didn’t know why he did this. He had not been taking his medication.

On Sunday, the day before the incident, Yacono was also the subject of a disturbance call in Arlington at 10:50 p.m. Police records say he was threatening to attack the owner of a property in the 9800 block of Moran Road. The incident is listed as “settled by contact.” A disturbance was also reported at that address in Arlington around 12:30 p.m. Monday, when a man was yelling and kicking his car. He was no longer at the residence when Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived.

A fire killed one woman in a Mountlake Terrace mobile home early Monday morning.

Fire crews were dispatched at 3:28 a.m. to a fence fire in the 5500 block of 242nd St SW. When crews arrived, they discovered a mobile home on fire on the other side of the fence. 244th SW is Snohomish - King county line and the border between Mountlake Terrace and Shoreline.

More trucks were dispatched, and the fire was contained to a bedroom. Damage to the mobile home is estimated at $75,000. The fire did not spread to neighboring mobile homes, according to South Snohomish Fire spokeswoman Leslie Hynes.

“Firefighters located one person inside the mobile home and treated the patient at the scene. The patient died at the scene,” Hynes said. “A cat also died in the fire.”

The victim was described as a woman in her 50s.

Fire investigators believe the woman lived alone in the mobile home. Their work was interrupted after they uncovered what appeared to be an explosive device while sifting through fire debris, Hynes said. A bomb technician was called and determined the device was a hand grenade that had been disarmed and modified for use as a cigarette lighter.

Fire investigators resumed work Monday afternoon, but do not expect to have information on the cause of the fire until later in the week. The fire does not appear to be suspicious at this time. South Snohomish Fire investigators are working with Mountlake Terrace Police to determine the cause of the fire, which is standard for a fire death in the city, Hynes said.

Mountlake Terrace farmers market will not return next year

Sunday, October 28, 2012

According to our news partner the MLTNews, the Mountlake Terrace Business Association will discontinue its support of the MLT Farmers Market, which will not return next summer.

The market has been in operation for three years and was supported by grants from the business association.

According to MLTBA treasurer Danil Semenov, the main issue influencing the decision to close the market was funding. The MLTBA solely financed the market for three years with member dues, and while there was a core group of 200-300 regular customers, the base “did not grow beyond that point,” he said.

MLT City Council votes to extend city’s moratorium on medical marijuana collectives

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

From our News Partners at the MLT News in Mountlake Terrace

By Doug Petrowski

By a 5-0 vote, the Mountlake Terrace City Council Monday night renewed the city’s current moratorium on all medical marijuana collective activities, including collective gardens. The moratorium extends until Jan. 8, 2013 the prohibition on medical marijuana activities in Mountlake Terrace while city officials study how it may implement regulations in the future. Officials will also review how current litigation around the state and this fall’s Initiative 502 marijuana reform ballot measure may affect the issue.

City officials want more time “with the sincere intent and continuing work to find a solution, whatever it is, that would be supportable for the community and not create undo risk,” said Shane Hope, Director of Community and Economic Development.

“I believe we still need to gather facts for this,” Mayor Pro Tem Laura Sonmore said just before the vote on the moratorium.

Mountlake Terrace joins other cities in the state that currently have a moratorium on medical marijuana activities and collective gardens, including Redmond and Snohomish. Other cities have moved on allowing some storefront co-ops and/or collective gardens for the growing and/or distribution of medical marijuana, as allowed within restrictions under state law. Federal drug law does not allow the production, distribution or possession of any marijuana.

The City of Mountlake Terrace has had a moratorium on medical marijuana regulations since just before Gov. Christine Gregoire vetoed portions of SB 5073 while allowing some aspects of the legislation to become law in April 2011. Current state law contains provisions for collective gardens but not for dispensaries.

The City of Mountlake Terrace has renewed its moratorium on medical marijuana activities three times.

A number of Washington state cities are currently facing litigation over their respective handling of the medical marijuana issue, including Seattle and Kent. State voters will find Initiative 502, the regulation of marijuana production, distribution and possession of limited amounts of marijuana, on this November’s general election ballot.
