The Olympics are always glorious

Especially with a fresh layer of snow and bright sunshine. The barge and ferry are just for fun.

Stunning Cascade sunrise

Monday, January 2, 2023

There are a lot of cameras trained on the Olympics - and a lot of residents with views. There are not so many good views to the east and the Cascades. You have to be on the North City ridge or have a rooftop view to really see the Cascades.

Fortunately, one of our regular reporters has such a view and sent in this gorgeous shot of sunrise on the Cascades.

Our Cascade range is also snow-covered. Here it gleams in the sun, stretching as far as the eye can see.

Snow on the mountains

Sunday, November 13, 2022

The Olympics have some snow - just not the thick cover of previous years. Hopefully there are storms to come that will land a lot of snow in all our mountains.

And now, from the east, more mountains

Tuesday, January 11, 2022

I told Mike Remarcke that he needed to uphold the honor of the east side and that other mountain range.

He said "Just happen to have..." and sent this shot of the Cascades glowing under a fresh snow pack.

We take it for granted that we live between two spectacular snow-capped mountain ranges. Every once in a while we need to pause and say "wow."

The mountains were out

Monday, January 10, 2022

It was a beautiful sunny day on Sunday, January 9, 2022. One intrepid sailor was out on Puget Sound, along with at least one motorized boat.

Mt. Baker, near Bellingham, looks like a dish of ice cream. It got a fair measure of recent snow. In spite of all the snow, Mt. Baker is the one volcano with active steam vents.

Olympics in sunshine

Friday, December 31, 2021

There are a lot of advantages to our snowy weather. We get sunshine, which is not normal at this time of year. No one is talking about the "Big Dark" or leaving porch lights on. The snow reflects so much light that there is some light even in the middle of the night (trust me on this).

The mountains are glorious and the photographers are turning in beautiful photos. I see people walking about with sleds, skis, and snowboards. Not sure where they are finding hills but I have heard about the Nile, Shoreview Park, a couple of schools with small hills, probably Motorcycle Hill, and I'm sure there are many other spots.

Enjoy it while it's here. When the snow is gone it will seem even darker than usual.

There are mountains above the clouds

The Brothers in the Olympics

We are under our winter cloud cover. There are daily glimpses of sunshine but chances are you looked away and missed it.

Just so you can remember - we have gorgeous mountains on each side of us. The Brothers are part of The Olympics, to the west across Puget Sound.

Tuesday was the Solstice. The days will add a few minutes of light every day and we'll begin to notice in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, don't be quick to take down your Christmas lights and leave your porch light on.

What's the phrase? "It's better to light one candle than to curse the darkness."

Mountains to the east with flying saucers

Tuesday, December 7, 2021

I feel a real sense of local pride that the conspiracy theory of flyer saucers comes from our very own Mt. Rainier. Scientists call these "lenticular clouds" but an alien invasion is far more fun.

This is an unusual double cloud. It looks like a collision with the lower cloud getting squashed. No doubt there will be spaceship debris all over the mountain and the government will have to shut it down.

Or JFK is flying the ship and people will gather to wait for him to land.
