Get Your Mother’s Day Flowers at the LFP Farmers Market - Sunday, May 9th

Tuesday, May 4, 2021

The ever popular Lake Forest Park Farmers Market opens this Sunday, May 9, 2021 (10am to 2pm), and it will once again be chock-full of your favorite market fresh foods and flowers.

For many folks, it just wouldn’t be Mother’s Day without a spectacular bouquet from the market for every mom in your life. And you can count on the LFP Farmers Market to be overflowing with glorious arrangements of spring flowers for every taste!

Of course, the market is also the go-to destination for farm-fresh produce, meat, and eggs as well as fish, baked goods, wine, and loads of fabulous, locally produced goodies.

In addition to all the longtime flower vendors, other returning vendors include:

Alvarez Organic Farms (organic row crops)
Bautista Farm (row crops)
Beekeepers Secret (honey)
Cha New Life Garden (row crops/ flowers)
Doll House Baked Goods
Garden Treasures (row crops)
Greenwood Cider (hard cider)
La Pasta LLC (pasta and sauces)
Lopez Island Vineyards
Martin Family Orchard (orchard fruit)
Mollie Bear Farm (lamb and chicken)
Patty Pan (frozen tamales)
Seattle Pops
Shen Zen Tea (kombucha and teas)
Sidhu Farms (tomato plants/ frozen berries)
Well Fed Farm (row crops, pork, chicken, eggs)
Wilson Fish Markets (fresh and smoked salmon, fish)

The market will also welcome some new additions to the line-up like Pop’s Kettle Corn (take out only, no onsite eating) and Tin Dog Brewery.

Meanwhile, other favorite vendors will be at the market this year under new names. Cascade Valley Farm is the new name for Rainier Salsa, but don’t worry, they’ll still have that delicious salsa and chips, as well hummus and other new items. And Sua Yang Flowers is now Long Farm – new name, same beautiful flowers!

Of course, some of the most popular vendors for berries, row crops, and stone fruits don’t join the market until later in the season. So until then, you can also shop the market for some wonderful garden art from guest vendors including Forest Green Enterprises, Metalwings Studio, Lady Belle Creations, and Finches and Feathers.

Check out pre-order information and the full list of vendors here
And don’t forget to GiveBIG this week for the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market and Third Place Commons. The farmers market is the largest program of Third Place Commons, a community-supported nonprofit, and is only made possible through the generous support of donors like you.

Take the Shopper Oath before the LFP Farmers Market Sunday

Thursday, May 7, 2020

The ever popular Lake Forest Park Farmers Market opens this Sunday, May 10th (10 AM to 3 PM), and it will once again be chock-full of your favorite market fresh foods and Mother’s Day flowers.

However, there will also be some big changes as the market evolves to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that the market is safe for everyone. Here are some of the ways the market will be different this year.

This year, the market must shift away from being a community event to being your quick in-and-out destination for essential food shopping. As the market evolves, the way the community shops must change, too.

Everyone must act together to reduce the spread of COVID-19 through strict social distancing, routine sanitation, and other measures designed to minimize risks for everyone. This is vital to the safety and health of shoppers, farmers, volunteers, and staff. Health and safety are paramount for all.

In addition, if the market doesn’t maintain social distancing and other commitments, it could be closed again. So before you head to the market this Sunday, please take the Market Shopper Oath to help ensure the safety and success of the market.

THE SHOPPER OATH

As a responsible market shopper, I will:
  • STAY HOME if I am sick or if I have been in contact with someone who is sick.
  • Make a shopping list before visiting the market.
  • Pre-order and prepay vendors whenever possible. (Pre-order info here.)
  • Designate one shopper per household.
  • Leave my pet at home unless it is a service animal.
  • Wear a face covering to the market and know that I will not be discriminated against for this choice.
  • Pay attention to modifications and signs and adhere to them.
  • Not touch products, but instead ask a vendor for what I would like.
  • Maintain 6 feet of space at all times. I will look for physical cues like tape, chalk, and signs to help remind me.
  • Shop quickly and efficiently. I won't loiter for chats with my favorite vendors - I will offer them a smile (behind my mask) and a wave.
  • Use the provided hand sanitizer and hand wash stations at the market.
  • Avoid touching my eyes, nose, mouth, and face in general.
  • Cover my cough or sneeze with a tissue, then dispose of it. Then wash my hands.
  • Set an example for all by being the most responsible shopper I can possibly be!

Also, if you are at risk (65+, underlying conditions, immunosuppressed, or pregnant), please consider staying home and sending someone else to do your shopping.

Thank you for supporting the LFP Farmers Market and its vendors – and for shopping responsibly!

The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market opens Sunday, May 10

Monday, May 4, 2020

Ready for some great news (at last)? The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is ready to open on schedule on Sunday, May 10th from 10am to 3pm!

In the Coronavirus era, farmers markets have been declared by Governor Inslee as essential businesses like grocery stores. However, the market must undergo many changes to ensure the safety of all shoppers, vendors, volunteers, and staff before it can open.

After working closely with partners at the state, county, and local levels, the market has been redesigned in a new pared down format where physical distancing and a high level of sanitation can be maintained for everyone. The number one goal is to make sure the market is a safe place for you to do your weekly food shopping.

The great news is you’ll still be able to get all your farm-fresh produce, protein, and other favorite specialty items from your favorite market vendors! And yes, you can get your Mother’s Day flowers, too!

As of May 1st, both the State of Washington and King County have given the greenlight to flowers, just in time for Mother’s Day! (But please note, there will be pre-arranged bouquets only.)

The LFP Farmers Market is a program of Third Place Commons and it is your support that makes it possible. This week is a week of giving with #GivingTuesdayNow and GiveBIG back-to-back, the perfect chance to show your support for the market and your Commons community. If you love the market, please consider making a gift today here or at ThirdPlaceCommons.org.

When the market opens, expect it to look and feel very different. For the time being, the market must shift away from a community gathering space to the place where you do your quick in-and-out shopping.

A few of the changes you can expect to see:

  • Fewer vendors will be at the market so that those who are there can spread out with more physical distance between them – and between shoppers.
  • Many vendors will be offering pre-orders to minimize your time at the market. Check the Third Place Commons website for details. (A list will be uploaded and updated as details become available.)
  • There will be a designated entrance and exit, and shopper entry will be controlled to eliminate crowding.
  • Vendors and staff will be required to wear masks or face coverings. Shoppers will also be asked to wear face coverings.
  • Social distancing will be enforced for all participants.
  • Handwashing and hand sanitizer will be available.

There will be many more updates on the market – including what will be asked of market shoppers – as opening day approaches. Please be sure to stay tuned for further important updates.

In this difficult, topsy-turvy time, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is a welcome source of sunshine, providing the community access to fresh, healthy market foods (including great organic options) while supporting the many wonderful farmers and vendors who rely on the market each year.

Their continued success this season will help ensure they survive this very difficult year and enable both vendors and market alike to come back, hopefully stronger than ever, in years to come.

In a time when many are struggling more than ever, the market also continues to support low-income neighbors through the locally funded Market Bucks food assistance program. (You can make a gift to support Market Bucks here.)

The market also gladly accepts WIC and Senior Vouchers, SNAP benefits, and is now participating in the statewide SNAP Market Match program, providing SNAP recipients with a dollar-for-dollar match for their SNAP benefits up to $10 daily.

So grab your shopping list (and face covering!) and come on down to the market this Sunday, 10-3!

Sunday is Mothers' Day

Sunday, May 12, 2019

For everyone who has had a part in raising a child - whether the child is with you on this day or not.

Mothers - stepmothers - adoptive mothers - bereaved mothers - mothers who gave up their babies but never forgot them - grandmothers and great-grandmothers and aunts and friends who babysat or read or took them to parks and museums. Relatives who managed to maintain contact even though the parents split up.

This is your day. Know that we honor and appreciate you all.

A special Mother's Day

From My Heart to Yours

Conceived in love
Though not by plan
The heart of a woman
The heart of a man

Empty arms
Hearts torn in two
Selfless love
Took me from you

Missing piece
Of a mother’s heart
Daughter’s secret treasure
Through all the years apart

Prayers and yearning
Loved ones found
Two hearts restored
Love knows no bound

~Baby Girl Parsons March 24, 2019

50 plus years ago, Baby Girl Parsons was born and adopted. Her Birth father was only identified as 'Bob' while his mother was 'Mrs. N'. The Birth Mom was fully named.

WARM  (Washington Adoption Reunion Movement) was called in to help.

Even with extensive documentation from the adoption agency, a few WARM Confidential Intermediaries (CI) were baffled as to why we could find Birth Mom's parents, siblings, and extended family but the Mom was seemingly nowhere to be found. Baby Girl Parsons' search/reunion took years of great patience and tenacity.

Search is a journey. It takes as long as it takes.

WARM's second lengthy search was to find Mrs. N's surname. We assumed that Bob was 'Robert'. Under closer scrutiny, while looking for ‘Bob’ we found the adoption agency had three different dates of birth for the birth father.

Only common sense was needed to weed out the erroneous two. Then, using public records through a year-plus of painstaking research, a possible surname was found, and a 'Robert'. Now, we needed a process to totally confirm our findings.

WARM approached the adoptee to have DNA testing. Her DNA test took place at a time before WARM had a DNA specialist (who now has miraculously found birth parents when no one has any names).

Months passed after the DNA test. Eventually, a distant DNA paternal relative contacted the adoptee. With the adoptee's permission, WARM assumed communication with a distant cousin in Sweden who assisted WARM in connecting her family members to Mrs. N and the birth father.

The search is now picking up speed and we need to stay focused as we sense reunion is fast approaching. The clues are arriving quickly, like the leaves that pop up on Ancestry.

Fleshing out the tree details uncovered that the Birth Father died in his 40s. The adoptee and WARM had their hopes dashed to obtain a reunion with 'Bob'. WARM becomes so enmeshed with a client's family, we also experience the joys and sorrows. Despite that disappointment, Baby Parsons has now reunited with a paternal half-sibling and extended family.

Simultaneously, while contacting one of the Birth Father’s adult sons to seek consent to reunion, we decided to contact one of the Birth Mom’s siblings as a last ditch effort to find Mom. This is not the usual process because WARM prefers to contact the Birth Mom directly to maintain her privacy. In this case, we knew the siblings were aware of the long-ago pregnancy but sibling contact is still not our first choice.

‘Mum’ was found! Mum didn’t disappear, she moved to Canada decades ago.

Mum and Baby Girl Parsons have met and for Mother’s Day the adoptee will bring her son north to meet grandma.

Baby Girl Parsons, Mum, and WARM wish you a wonderful Mother’s Day.

PS: there is more to the story!

Another cousin has contacted our reunited client due to the DNA testing. This new cousin is also an adoptee. At this point, our new DNA specialist enters the search.

Baby Girl Parsons and the new cousin share the same paternal grandparents and we have two possible birth fathers, one of which is more likely. WARM’s client will speak with her Mum to possibly find confirmation. Mum is not well but we have hope she will remember some rumors and clues.

~~~~~~~~
Here is some good advice from our DNA specialist, John, who worked to determine how this new cousin, H, is related to Baby Girl Parsons.
H’s case is an example of why people seeking to be reunited with their birth parents should be DNA tested. She had so many strong DNA matches, it was as though her birth parents were meant to be discovered. After reviewing the DNA matches and comparing those matches with her first cousin, it took only a few hours to accurately identify all of H's grandparents, both maternal and paternal. Most of the reunion cases that I encounter do not have the same abundance of DNA matching information that was found in this case.
Although the various DNA testing companies provide very thorough educational information and articles regarding the interpretation of DNA results, the analysis of DNA matches is not something that can be learned overnight or in one weekend. There are many ways that DNA matching results can easily be misinterpreted, even by people who are highly experienced.
In general, I would strongly advise anyone seeking reunion with their birth family to seek help from professionals like WARM. I have found that the WARM CI's are very professional, thorough, meticulous, and discrete, with very high focus on the protection of their client's privacy.
WARM thinks John is a gift and we appreciate his tenacity and assistance in solving some easy (for him) and some very difficult searches.
Pam Queen, Intermediary for WARM –Washington Adoption Reunion Movement
Local nurserywoman Mareen Kruckeberg first opened her private garden and nursery for a small plant sale on Mother’s Day weekend in 1987. Twenty-five years later, the annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale and Open House carries on as a historic, yet thriving community tradition at Shoreline’s Kruckeberg Botanic Garden.
Browsing at the 2011 Mother's Day Sale
Photo by Aden Heuser
The MsK Rare and Native Plant Nursery that Mareen founded continues the tradition with a family-friendly event on May 11-13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In 2012, local plant sales on Mother’s Day weekend abound, but that was not true 25 years ago. Don’t miss the original! The plant sale will feature hundreds of species, many hard-to-find, of native plants and unusual exotics that are well suited for Northwest gardens. Free family activities and garden tours will also be offered.
Mareen, who passed away in 2003, specialized in a wide selection of plants that were rarely available in nurseries at the time. She loved to make interesting plants available to Northwest gardeners. The annual Mother’s Day Sale quickly became a favorite community event, particularly for plant enthusiasts and connoisseurs.
In the years since it began, the Mother’s Day Sale has transitioned from a small open house at a private garden to a large fundraising event for a public botanic garden. The Nursery is located within the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, which was purchased from the Kruckeberg family by the City of Shoreline in 2008. All sale proceeds now support the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation, a nonprofit organization that operates the Garden in cooperation with the City. The Mother’s Day Sale is the Foundation’s largest fundraising event. Members of the Foundation are invited to shop early at the member’s only pre-sale event on May 10 from 3 pm to 7 pm. New members are welcome.
As a mother herself, Mareen enjoyed children and often sent them home from the sale with a free violet. The tradition continues at the Sale’s popular Sprout Spot, where families with young children can get their hands dirty with free educational activities, chose a plant to take home, and make a gift for Mom. The Foundation will also offer free garden tours on May 12 and 13. These tours will introduce visitors to the Garden’s highlights and help them to spot the not-to-miss plant specimens.
For more information, contact Sarah Baker at 206-546-1281 ext.5. The Garden and Nursery are located at 20312 15th Ave NW, Shoreline, WA. Regular open hours are Friday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
