Bring me the moon

Friday, March 4, 2022

Jerry Picard took this in 2017 when the skies were full of wildfire smoke.
Tonight's moon looks like the missing piece from the smoke moon.

Right now it is 8:30pm on Friday, March 4, 2022. The moon is the tiniest sliver in the sky. I've never seen it so thin.

I would love to have a photo of it. I'm putting out a general appeal because I don't know who is available this minute or who is under that large dark cloud over Lake Forest Park.

If you can get a moon shot please email it to Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com

Thank you!

Photo: Super Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse

Thursday, May 27, 2021

By David Walton

The shot was at 4:23am when there was an ever so slight break in the clouds.

Typical northwest photo experience: clouds always a gamble, but this one has an interesting result.

Several folks pulled up to the entrance of the park right about the time of the full stage of the eclipse (presumably to see the full eclipse), but most folks turned away because the clouds fully hid the moon during most of the full phase.

Patience paid off for staying!

This was taken from Richmond Beach Park (with special event permit to be in the park).

Wolf moon

Saturday, January 30, 2021

Thanks to Shoreline resident Jo Simmons for going out in the cold to get this photo.

I like all the interesting names, but when did we start naming moons? I asked Mr. Google what a Wolf Moon is and this was the response:

The first full moon of January will blaze in the sky on Thursday, reaching its fullest point at 7.16pm that day. It's called the 'wolf moon' traditionally, due to the howling of wolves in midwinter when food is scarce. ... This is the length of time it takes for the moon to go through one whole lunar phase cycle.”

Maybe because we don't have any wolves here.

Full flower moon

Thursday, May 7, 2020

When did the moon get so many names? Full flower. Blood. Wolf, Super.

Space.com says:

The full moon of May, also called the Flower Moon, will occur the morning of Thursday, May 7, at 6:45 a.m. EDT (1045 GMT), according to NASA's SkyCal site. This full moon will come just two days after the moon reaches perigee, or the closest point to Earth in its orbit, making this a "supermoon," according to NASA.

Super moons

Wednesday, April 8, 2020

Tonight was the SuperMoon, coming closer to the earth than at any other time in 2020. Since I'm not technical, I call these shots by Mike Remarcke the Warm Moon and the Cold Moon.

The first one is dramatic and boldly colored against the dark trees and the night sky.

The Cold Moon shot just looks battered and bruised. All those craters where the poor thing got smacked around by asteroids. Thanks, Big Guy for taking it on the chin and deflecting those things away from us.

Or maybe the earth would look that bad, too, if it were naked. Let's not find out.

Photo: Super Worm moon

Tuesday, March 10, 2020

According to National Geographic.com

In the north, the March full moon is also known as the worm moon, because it coincides with the time of year when earthworms begin to emerge from the thawing soils. That's why this equinox supermoon is also being called a super worm moon.

This week has Daylight Saving followed by a Super Moon Worm Moon followed by Friday the 13th.

Photos: Spring Moon - Worm Moon

Wednesday, March 20, 2019

Spring begins Wednesday, with a full moon.

Here is a photo I took from my deck this evening, the Worm Moon, symbolizing the end of winter and beginning of spring when the earthworms emerge. It is usually the last full moon before the equinox, or the first day of spring. This year is fairly unique in that the last full moon of the winter happens on the equinox.

The spring equinox has had great cultural significance through the ages, and many cultures still celebrate the new beginnings of springtime. Another name for the March Full Moon is Lenten Moon, which is derived from Germanic languages and means spring, and has also given name to the Christian Lent period before the Easter celebrations.

Other names include the Crust Moon, after the crust which forms on top of snow as it melts and refreezes; the Crow Moon signifying the crows appearance at the end of winter: and the Sap Moon or Sugar Moon which mark the time for harvesting maple syrup from maple tree saps.
