Sun and moon and smoke

Good Night, Sun

After a day without sun, the sun made a brief appearance before it was buried in smoke.

Hello Moon!

The crescent moon was able to slice through to make an appearance - or perhaps the smoke is finally starting to dissipate.

Super Blue Moon in first light

Thursday, August 22, 2024

Photographer's notes:

Had to wait for first light to get a better detailed shot.

So odd to have a full moon AND first light in the sky.

Actually looked behind me to see exactly where the sun is.

Facing South, guessing it is behind to the left, and the full moon is from "over the top" of Earth.

Perfect angles to do both at the same time.

Strawberry Moon amid the clouds

Monday, June 24, 2024

Photos by Bruce Hill between 1:23 and 2:03am

The Strawberry Moon during the early morning hours of June 22, 2024 at Bitter Lake in north Seattle.

The Strawberry Moon played hide and seek behind a thinly remarkable layer of clouds, and then appeared between them for a full face view.

Just wonderful, were one to be up at these hours of the night.

Earthshine reveals the part of the moon not normally visible during phases.

I remember a fragment of a poem -

"the new moon with the old moon in its arms."

Half-moon sky

Thursday, October 26, 2023

Photo copyright Gloria Z. Nagler

Gloria says that she got out her bird lens for her moon shot. Clearly a bird's eye view of the moon.

The moon was visible tonight and it looked to be at 3/4, so I do need to publish moon photos as soon as I get them.

However, if we wait a few weeks, we'll be back to half-moon again.

Thanks, Gloria for this beautiful photo.

Autumn moon on the equinox

Sunday, September 24, 2023

The autumn moon on Friday night at the Autumn equinox - officially 11:50pm Friday, September 22, 2023.

The equinox occurs the moment that the sun is aligned with the Earth's equator. There are two equinoxes every year -- one in September and one in March -- and they occur at seasonal transition points, determining the first day of fall and the first day of spring.

Worm moon and the end of winter

Friday, March 10, 2023

Worm moon photo by Lee Wolfe

This was the Worm Moon on Tuesday morning, March 7, 2023.

“The Worm Moon is the moon for March, and for some, it takes its name from the fact that earthworms begin to reappear around this time of year, bringing birds back out to feed. It signals the end of winter and the start of regrowth in nature.”

Photographer Lee Wolfe says "I’m all for the end of winter!" So say we all.

Taco Moon

Barbara Twaddell thinks this pink shadowed moon looks like a taco.
No more unreasonable than green cheese.

Where did the green cheese thing start anyway?

Photo: The moon and Venus

The moon and Venus
Photo copyright Mike Remarcke

Mike managed to get this photo on an early morning on August 25, 2022. It was a brief respite between bouts of wildfire smoke. In the photo the smoke is thick over the Cascades, but the upper sky is clear.

I'm a little appalled that we have been dealing with wildfire smoke since August. It isn't as bad as previous years when we couldn't even see Lake Washington or Puget Sound, but it would be nice to be able to open windows again.

The photo is lovely, though.

No need for a night light - "Buck" Super moon lights the skies

Friday, July 15, 2022

We were treated to clear skies and a very bright super moon this week.

Photographer Bruce Hill said "I honestly thought I had left a light on when I woke up at 4am."

An article in CNN says there's a reason for that.

While there isn't a single definition of "supermoon," the term typically refers to a full moon that can stand out more than others because it is within 90% of its closest orbit to Earth. The buck moon is the supermoon that will come closest to Earth this year, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.
