Missing Shoreline man is back home with his family

Tuesday, August 6, 2019

Frank Mina is at home now
Frank Mina left the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior, where he spends part of every day, at 2pm on Monday, August 5, 2019. When he didn't return home by evening, his family reported him missing and started looking for him.

Frank has been with his local family for a relatively short time, moving here from out of state. The family had then, very recently, moved out of Shoreline. The family was worried that he would not be able to find his way home.

Family members contacted Senior Center staff, who put the word out on the Senior Center Facebook page and every other social media site where they could post his story.

Tips received from the Facebook story paid off.

Around 2pm on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, he was located and returned to his family. He had been gone for 24 hours. He had eaten during that time but had not slept. He had been inside most of the time he was gone.

The family is greatly relieved and grateful to all the people who helped. The Senior Center, with all they learned from the experience, is writing a protocol for locating missing seniors.

Edmonds police seek answers to the missing hours of Shoreline woman's life

Edmonds police detectives are asking for the public’s help in piecing together what happened to a woman during a two-hour period early Sunday morning, July 14, 2019.

According to police, detectives are investigating the case involving a 28-year-old Shoreline woman who was visiting her fiancé’s family in the 8700 block of Bowdoin Way in Edmonds. The woman and her fiancé were leaving the home around 12:30am when he went back inside for a few minutes. When he came back outside, she was gone.

The family searched for her, then called 911 to report her missing. She was eventually found at 2am at a gas station in the 9700 block of Edmonds Way, by two people who had stopped for fuel. They called her family, who took her home.

“The only thing the woman remembers for certain is waking up in a ‘grass field’ with a man kneeling over her and a woman standing nearby,” Edmonds police spokesman Sgt. Shane Hawley said. “She also remembers running off into a wooden area prior to finding her way to the gas station.”

At some point during that time, the woman lost a pair of black, strapped sandals she was wearing, Hawley added. The woman also had cuts, scrapes and bruises when she was located.

Detectives are investigating, but details are sparse.

“Our goal is to determine where she went and how she was injured during the period she was missing,” Hawley said. While police initially indicated the case may have involved “sexual motivation,” they don’t know if that is correct, he added.

Anyone with information should contact the department at 425-771-0200 and ask for Detective Andy Mehl. He can also be emailed at Andrew.Mehl@Edmondswa.gov.

Sunday, September 30, 2018

The West Seattle Blog reports that 74 year old Jackie Dupras, missing for two weeks from her home in West Seattle, has been found, deceased.

Her body was found near the SW Spokane stairway between 60th and 61st [map], by a landscaper who was working in a steeply sloped back yard of a family who was away from home.

She was a well-known community activist in West Seattle.

Friends and family have been posting flyers, searching and following all leads since Dupras disappeared. One of the leads was that she had been spotted heading for a bus whose route ends at Shoreline Community College, so many people in Shoreline were watching for her.

Dupras, who had dementia, also went missing from the Folklife Festival at Seattle Center in May of this year, but she was quickly found that time.

Happy ending - Stolen goat returned to owner

Monday, May 21, 2018

Rescued kid
At 5am Monday, Seattle resident Jens Melin found a baby goat tied to a pole at a school near where he lives.

"It was shaking and terrified." He said the rope was long enough that it could graze but since the owner reported that it hadn't yet been weaned, that probably wasn't helpful.

Jens took it home, put it on his deck, and started asking friends on Facebook what he should do with a goat.

It didn't take long to discover our story.

Jens tried to call the number provided but it was blocked. So he and the goat got in the car.

"We only had the cross streets. When we got out to start knocking on doors the goat started yelling. The owner heard him and there was a satisfying reunion."

Missing dogs reunited with family

Wednesday, January 3, 2018

Foxy and Sissy are back at home
By Diane Hettrick

I am happy to report that the two little dogs, Foxy and Sissy, were reunited with their owner today. (See previous story).

I don't usually publish missing pet stories. Dogs are usually found right away. Cats either come back on their own or are never found.

This seemed different. The dogs were frightened by the fireworks on New Year's Eve.

In that case, dogs can run so far and so fast that they end up far away from home and can't find their way back. And these girls had been gone for several days.

I was assured that the owner and her family had contacted every group and followed every suggestion for finding lost pets.

These dogs were special for another reason. According to the owner's son, one of them had belonged to his grandfather. The other was his grandmother's dog - and his grandmother had died just a few months ago.

The family was distraught.

I was finished with the day's edition, but I added the story and asked readers to contact our Tips email.

The next day, I received an email from a reader who volunteers at PAWS in North Lynnwood. PAWS is the animal shelter for both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.
She said she had been there on Tuesday and thought she saw the dogs. Further, she said that PAWS only keeps strays for three days before they are put up for adoption - and this was the third day.

PAWS was closed for adoptions on Wednesday but open for owners looking for lost pets.

I sent the phone number - the owner called and got voicemail. I sent the address, Wednesday hours, maps, driving directions, and urged an immediate trip to PAWS.

PAWS has a contact form on their website. I included all the information I had. Linked to the published story. Attached the photo of the dogs.

Within an hour, I had a response, telling me they had made contact with the owner.

This afternoon, the owner's son told me that those were their dogs and they were safe and well at home.

Whew!
