Walking with Mary and Joseph in labyrinth at Church of the Redeemer

Sunday, December 2, 2018

You are invited to walk the labyrinth at Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore on Tuesday December 11, 2018. "Walking with Mary and Joseph" begins at 7:00pm.

If you would like to help with set up, arrive a bit early, like 6:30pm. If you have questions, contact Bee Jay Mar at labyrinth@redeemer-kenmore.org.

Church of the Redeemer is at 6210 Northeast 181st St, Kenmore, 425-486-3777.

The main labyrinth at Church of the Redeemer is an original design by Dan Niven. It is installed on the floor of the parish hall as a gaffer tape, semi-permanent labyrinth. Dan has designed and installed many labyrinths in the Puget Sound region.

His description follows:

Over the past fifteen-plus years, I’ve created many circular designs, and am also drawn to patterns which emerge out of a series of nested polygons. A common medieval labyrinth shape was octagonal with a flat base–imagine a stop sign–occasionally rotated 22.5 degrees to create on “on-point” look.
I use this motif often, sometimes increasing the number of sides to twelve, creating the dodecagonal shape employed in this cruciform five-circuit design. Paths are wide enough for those using a walker. The middle is 3.5 circuits wide or about quarter of the overall width, a common ratio for labyrinths with an expanded center.

Our labyrinth is named “The Twelve Apostles,” reminding us of all the adventures Jesus’ original core group experienced, walking in the footsteps of Jesus and the Old Testament wanderers.

We also have a variety of table-top labyrinths for walking with a finger or with a stylus.

Church of the Redeemer is at 6210 Northeast 181st St in Kenmore. The campus is a short distance north of Bothell Way, near the Burke-Gilman Trail. The entrance looks like a gravel driveway. The campus is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. And, we managed to hide a large building on the side of a hill that is not easily seen from the street.

Community life at Redeemer centers on worship in the Episcopal tradition. Art and music vitally deepen this worship. Our faith expresses itself with service to people, locally to internationally.

The Episcopal Church welcomes you.

Meditation in Hamlin Park Saturday

Thursday, August 9, 2018

City Meditation Crew
in Hamlin Park Saturday
Meditation, the practice of focusing solely on the present moment and pushing the clutter of the mind aside, appears to have an increasing number of health benefits.

Anne Beffel, professor of visual and performing arts at Michigan Tech and director of the Studio Here Now, intentionally looks for ways to create space for mindfulness within public art.

Beffel will lead a guided walk with performance art group City Meditation Crew on Saturday August 11, 2018 at Hamlin Park in Shoreline.

“Meditation Circuit is a series of meditation stations along a pathway marked by public art work,” Beffel says.
“Each station offers a mindfulness-oriented activity intended to support well-being. Meditation Circuits demonstrate the power of meditation and the value of public art.”

Beffel was in Shoreline last year, leading a meditation and photography walk called Many Shades of Green which she created for David Francis, Public Art Coordinator for Shoreline.

Read Beffel's thoughts on art and meditation in the Michigan Tech article about her work: Meditation Circuit Combines Mindfulness, Public Art

Members of the nationally-recognized performance art group “City Meditation Crew” (CMC) will lead two 45-minute walks in the urban forest of Hamlin Park in Shoreline on Saturday, August 11 (2:30 – 3:15pm and 3:30 – 4:15pm, immediately followed by a reception); rain date August 12.

An RSVP is requested through advanced registration with the Shoreline Walks Program (mjohnson@shorelinewa.gov, 206-801-2638).

The hike is short but there are several steep inclines. The meeting point is at the park’s east side parking lot entrance on the SW corner of 25th Ave NE and NE 160th St in Shoreline 98155.

An imaginary city department complete with its own uniforms, CMC workers have inspired pedestrians to explore innovative mindfulness practices since 2009 in cities from New York to Seattle.

Partially based on the images gathered by participants in 2017, CMC has developed Meditation Circuit, a short walking loop featuring a series of meditation stations marked by colorful artwork.

Each station offers a different mindfulness-based activity intended to support well-being: listening; walking; even using cell phones as tools for meditating on the many colors of green in the park.

More on the project can be found online. After the August 11 event, the Circuit and artwork will remain in place for up to a year.

Funding for Meditation Circuit is made possible with support from the City of Shoreline Parks Recreation, and Cultural Services department, Shoreline Walks Program, 4Culture Tech Specific Grant, Michigan Technological University, and private donors.
