Shoreline Math Olympiad cancelled for 2023

2016 Math Olympiad photo by Amy Stapleton

A big shout out to the TWELVE volunteers that expressed an interest in joining our planning team to help make the 2023 event happen!

Sadly, we are short 12 additional planning team volunteers needed to make it all come together, so Steve and I are officially CANCELLING the proposed 2023 city wide competition.

We both have a very strong commitment to making Shoreline Math Olympiad come together yet again in the future for our students, so we'll for sure reach out to each of you to consider recruiting interest for a 2024 event - fingers crossed we can get the community support needed to do so!

For now, enjoy the upcoming holiday season with your family, stay warm, and continue what you do in encouraging our youth in our community in their academic challenges!

Go Mathletes!

Warmly,
Lisa McDonald and Steve Ruiter

Shoreline Math Olympiad cancels main gathering but making back up plans

Saturday, March 7, 2020

More than ten people
Shoreline Math Olympiad
Due to the current Coronavirus scare, we are officially CANCELLING the Shoreline Math Olympiad competition that was to take place Saturday March 14, 2020 on the campus of Shoreline Community College.

In moving forward, our plan is to reassess the situation over the next few weeks.

If schools are still in session in the weeks and months to come, our alternative plan is to offer the schools the opportunity to administer the tests to their students within their own school campuses, submit their students tests to us for scoring and tabulating, and then possibly hosting an awards ceremony to announce the winners before the end of the school year.

We will communicate this possible new scenario in the next few weeks after we see how the situation plays out.

Shoreline Math Olympiad is a go after worries about lack of volunteers

A few of the 500 kids excited about their medals
in the Math Olympiad

Coordinators for the Shoreline Math Olympiad sent out an urgent call for help when it appeared that they had important gaps in their volunteer team.

Coordinators were close to a decision point as to whether to move forward, or to cancel the event.

They sent out one last email, naming specific schools that did not have math coordinators on the planning team - and the volunteers stepped forward.

They have the planning team and school coordinators in place and will move forward.

This is a huge event, involving every public and private school in Shoreline / Lake Forest Park and they need a lot of volunteers. Check in with the math teachers or math coordinators at your local school to see how you can help.

Shoreline Councilmember Will Hall giving a medal
at the 2015 Shoreline Math Olympiad

The Shoreline Math Olympiad is an annual math competition event held each March on the Shoreline Community College campus. The date for 2016 is Saturday March 12. Each year it is held on the 2nd Saturday of March.

It is open to all 4th through 8th grade students who live in or go to school within the Shoreline school district boundaries.

This event has increased in popularity each year, with 2016 expecting close to 800 participants from 19 area school, including public, private, and home-schooled students.

The students descend upon the SCC campus ready for a challenging day of math! You can't miss them with their school t-shirts proudly being worn, and huge smiles as they make their way around the campus for the various day's happenings.

Students compete as individuals in two rounds of mental math and multiple choice question tests, as well as have the opportunity to work as a team of up to four students on two rounds of problem solving tests.

The day begins around 8:00am and the awards ceremony is usually concluded by 2:30pm.

All are invited to join us in the Shoreline Community College gymnasium for the entertainment and awards portion of the day. We suggest getting there BY noon to get a seat!

This event is made free of charge to all participants thanks to our generous event sponsors:

  • Shoreline Community College
  • Shoreline Public Schools Foundation
  • James Alan Salon
  • Chuck Olson Chevrolet/KIA
  • Smart Service Subaru
  • Shoreline Public Schools

Shoreline Math Olympiad takes place due to the committed group of 20 planning team members that coordinate all that is needed to make it all come together. During the event, we utilize 200+ adult and high school volunteers to adequately offer the coverage needed to make the day run smoothly. A HUGE thank you to all volunteers for making this event possible!

If you're interested in volunteering, or would like more information regarding the event, contact Lisa McDonald.

Preparations underway for Shoreline Math Olympiad March 8

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

The 16th annual Shoreline Math Olympiad will be held on Saturday, March 8 from 8:00am to 3:00pm at Shoreline Community College. The competition is for students in 4th to 8th grade and this year they are expecting over 750 students to complete from all of the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park public and private schools.

Testing occurs in the morning in classrooms all over campus, followed by lunch in the PUB #9000 building, and the awards ceremony at 1:00pm in the #3000 Gymnasium. 1,000 Mathletes, volunteers, parents and the community are expected to come to the awards ceremony.

Most school programs start meeting before or after school in the fall and conclude at the competitions held in the spring. These dedicated Mathletes are given extra math lessons, and have a quiz day at the end of each month to give the them a chance to use their skills to see how they stand amongst their peers. Schools use parents and teacher math coaches to work with students to solve challenging math problems at a higher grade level. Many participate in the National Math Olympiad program and compete against students from all over the country.

Highland Terrace students holding their trophy

Can any school beat Highland Terrace for the participation trophy? Since the award was started a few years ago Mark Owen’s students have won with an average of over 50% of the eligible students at the school participating in Shoreline Math Olympiad!

To register, students must be in 4th -8th grade and attend public or private school in Shoreline or Lake Forest Park. You do not need to be in a school math club to test, but you do need to register through your home school so please talk to your schools’ Math Coach.

Deadlines are fast approaching! The Organizing committee is still looking for high school and adult volunteers to be testing room proctors, help with concessions, score tests, data input, etc. For more information visit the Shoreline Math Olympiad website or contact Shelley Anderson, Volunteer Chair.

Shoreline Math Olympiad receives Community Recognition Award

Monday, May 20, 2013

Shoreline Math Olympiad was among those honored by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) at its Community Recognition Awards luncheon held May 17 at the Puget Sound Educational Service District in Renton. \

Each year, WASA 110, which includes Shoreline, holds a luncheon and an awards ceremony to honor community leaders nominated by their respective districts.

Representing Shoreline Math Olympiad at the event were Lisa McDonald, Suzanne Gugger, Jacqui Rublee, Amy Stapleton, Catherine Thompson, and Santosh Zachariach, along with Superintendent Sue Walker and Ellen Kaje, director of ELL, Title I, LAP, and Highly Capable Programs.

Every school in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park
participated in the 2013 Math Olympiad

For 15 years, Shoreline Math Olympiad has been bringing together students in grades 4 to 8 from Shoreline and Lake Forest Park for fun, friendly competition and learning. The event has grown steadily over the years.  The 2013 event, held on March 9 at Shoreline Community College, served over 700 "Mathletes” from every public and private school in the community. More than 150 volunteers assisted with the event.

The guiding force of Shoreline Math Olympiad for the past 10 years has been committee chair Lisa McDonald, a Shoreline Schools parent who has given thousands of hours of her time to this effort. Each year Lisa brings together her planning team of community volunteers and expertly manages the event, which begins at the school level with Math Olympiad clubs that encourage students to learn challenging, above grade-level math concepts.

Teachers and parent volunteers coordinate Math Clubs, which can range from small group work to full classroom settings. Students are presented with appropriate math problems that challenge each grade level. Shoreline Math Olympiad awards medals to the top 40 percent of the individuals participating, and the top 60 percent of teams participating.  Each year the gymnasium is filled with hundreds of parents and children as the medals and team trophies are awarded.

About 750 "mathathletes" along with coaches, teachers, family and friends descended on Shoreline College Saturday morning, March 9, for the 15th annual Shoreline Math Olympiad, cosponsored by Shoreline Community College, Shoreline School District, Shoreline Public Schools Foundation and James Alan Salon.

The crowd gathered in the PUB Cafeteria, then marched off to the gym for last-minute instructions before dispersing to classrooms across the campus for hours of doing math tests. Everyone reconvened after noon for lunch and a magician show while scores were tallied, followed by the  awards ceremony in the gym.

The competition for students in grades 4-8 includes students competing from all of the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park public and private schools. Notable additions this year were students from Parkwood Elementary, participating for the first time in the 15-year history of the event. In a special presentation, event organizers presented the school’s math club advisor with team t-shirts before going off to the first round of competition.

Some students may also participate in the Washington State Math Championships and the Math Is Cool regional and state competitions.

Shoreline Math Olympiad this Saturday with 750 students registered

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

The 15th annual Shoreline Math Olympiad will be held on Saturday, March 9 from 8:30am to 2:30pm at Shoreline Community College. The competition is for students in grades four through eight and this year we have students competing from all of the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park public and private schools.

Over 1,000 Mathletes and spectators attended the awards ceremony in 2012

More than 750 students have already registered to participate in the Math Olympiad this year.

Several Shoreline schools use parents and teacher math coaches to work with student "mathletes" to solve challenging math problems at a higher grade level.

in 2012, the 1st place team award went to Highland Terrace with 104 Mathletes,
53% of the school's 4th,5th & 6th grade students, participating in Shoreline Math Olympiad.
Second place team award went to St. Mark Catholic and Third Place trophy was awarded to Shoreline Christian.

Most school programs start meeting in the fall and conclude at the competitions held in the spring. Most programs give homework to the students during the week, and have a quiz day at the end of each month to give the kids a chance to use their skills to see how they stand amongst their peers.

The Shoreline Math Olympiad brings together all the Shoreline School District teams and area private schools for day of competition and entertainment. Some students will also participate in the Washington State Math Championships held in Blaine and Math Is Cool regional and state competitions. For more information visit the Shoreline Math Olympiad website

About Shoreline Math Olympiad:
This regional math competition is held annually in March for 4th-8th grade students attending public and private schools in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Several Shoreline school district schools host Math Clubs to encourage students to learn challenging, above grade level math concepts. These concepts are often presented in a fun way. Teachers and parent volunteers coordinate Math Clubs which can range from small group work to full classroom settings. Students are presented with appropriate math problems that challenge each grade level. Some schools that choose to participate in the National Math Olympiad program (MOEMS) also give their students five monthly contests from November to March that provide an incentive for students to intensify their study of math.
