It's a gray day on the sound but work goes on. This is another research vessel, Seafreeze America. In the background is the little tug, Swinomish, is slowing taking logs from Everett to Tacoma. At less than 2 knots per hour, it will be a long journey.

Scene on the Sound: The Nimitz

Sunday, December 10, 2017

USS Nimitz

The Nimitz sailed through the Shoreline Sea Sunday morning. Nothing showed this time on the Marine Traffic app, but Jan Hansen, with her eyes on the Sound, got photos for us.

With her 3100 sailors, the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) will remain stationed at a maintenance facility in Bremerton through fiscal year 2019.

The Nimitz has been at sea for over six months, sailing the Pacific and Indian oceans.

Its aircraft flew more than 1,300 combat missions in Iraq and Syria, dropping more than 900 pieces of ordinance.

In November, the Nimitz was involved in an exercise involving three aircraft carrier strike groups.

The Nimitz is named after World War II United States Pacific Fleet commander Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the U.S. Navy's last fleet admiral.

According to information in Wikipedia, "With an overall length of 1,092 ft (333 m) and full-load displacement of over 100,000 long tons, [the Nimitz-class supercarriers] have been the largest warships built and in service."

Scene on the Sound: RV Thomas G. Thompson headed to BC and New Zealand

RV Thomas G. Thompson on the Shoreline Sea

By Jarred Swalwell

Since there have been several photos of the Thomas G. Thompson this week I thought I'd shed some light on what she's been up to. Over the last 18 months she has undergone a 25 year mid-life re-fit in the Vigor shipyard on the Duwamish/ Elliott Bay.

Repairs and improvements included:
  • All new diesel engine driven generators.
  • New electrical management system.
  • Rebuilt electric propulsion motors.
  • New engine room control room.
  • New bridge (control systems and electronics).
  • Replaced all the drain piping in the ship.
  • And a myriad of other things.

She has been performing sea trials over the last week or two (see article) and will continue to do so until the 15th of December as acceptance trials from the shipyard and for Coast Guard sign-off.

The Thompson is a UNOLS whole ocean capable vessel and normally operates between Seattle, the South Pacific and all the way up to the Arctic Ocean.

Her next cruise will be a student research cruise to Knight Inlet, B.C. and will then head south to New Zealand the beginning of next year.

Scene on the Sound: Guess which team they root for

Friday, December 8, 2017

Here's a clue: Check out the single letter in the center of the boat.

Ok - in all fairness, it's the research vessel used by the UW.
It may have nothing to do with sports...
but it's a little hard to root for science

Rah rah rah

Get that test tube and fight!

Ecology proposes ban on dumping raw sewage in Puget Sound

Saturday, October 14, 2017

To help protect shellfish beds, swimming beaches, and vulnerable natural areas, the Washington Department of Ecology has proposed a rule to protect the Puget Sound from vessels dumping raw or treated sewage into Puget Sound.

The draft rule is available for review and comment through Nov. 30, 2017.

The No Discharge Zone would prohibit the discharge of sewage across 2,300 square miles of marine waters in Puget Sound. This includes all marine waters east of New Dungeness Lighthouse and the Discovery Island Lighthouse to the Canadian border, and fresh waters of Lake Washington, Lake Union, and connecting waters between and to Puget Sound.

The rule comes after five years of stakeholder engagement and public outreach. Ecology gathered data on Puget Sound vessels, pump-out facilities, and the conditions of Puget Sound, as well as conducted boater surveys and research on other states with No Discharge Zones.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency evaluated and approved Ecology’s request earlier this year, determining that the Puget Sound meets the federal standards for a No Discharge Zone.

The no-discharge zone would be the first in Washington and the Northwest. EPA has established more than 90 such zones in 26 states.

Public hearings
Ecology is hosting two public hearings that those interested can join by online webinar.

Scene on the Sound: Invader on the Shoreline Sea

Monday, September 18, 2017

Our Scene on the Sound reporter, Jan Hansen says:

It was not difficult to spot one of the largest yachts in America as she passed by this afternoon. My marine app says that Invader left Seattle at 12:22pm headed for Port Sidney (BC).  Right now this super yacht is motoring at 12.6 knots. It was a real treat to watch this beauty “sail” by.

Said to be one of America's hundred largest yachts, the 163.7 foot Invader is out of the Bay Area and owned by broadcasting mogul Jim Gabbert.  Steel-hulled Invader was built by Codecasa in Italy. It sleeps 14 guests and a crew of 9. Top speed is 18 knots and it can go 5,000 miles without a stop.

Edmonds fishing pier reopens and Shoreline residents are there

Friday, September 2, 2016

Members of the Collins family are clearly enjoying themselves as they prepare their crab traps.

From My Edmonds News
Text and photos by Larry Vogel

“Rain? What rain?” exclaimed Josh Collins, clad in a yellow rain slicker with crab pot in hand. “We’ve been waiting months for this!”

Josh, along with dad Dave and grandfather Ken, were among a score of intrepid fisherfolk waiting in the driving rain to get out on the newly reopened Edmonds fishing pier as the construction barricades came down at 9am Friday morning.

Built in 1975, the pier draws an estimated 100,000 users annually. But time and weather had taken their toll on the structure, and after years of rust and oxidation the underlying support beams were badly in need of renovation.

Work began in March 2016, necessitating a complete closure of the pier. Crews soon found that the old structure required more extensive repairs than originally anticipated, which pushed the initial estimate of an early summer completion out to at least Labor Day. See earlier My Edmonds News coverage here.

Oblivious of the driving rain, intrepid pier fishers spread out along
the full length of the newly-reopened fishing pier Friday

“We still have some odds and ends to complete before our grand opening sometime around the third week of October,” said City Capital Projects Manager Henry Schroder, who has overseen the repair work.
“The biggest piece will be a two-day closure for sealing the concrete. We’ll also be adding shelters over the fish-cleaning stations, some signage, and additional railings and finish work, but these can be done by just roping off sections of the pier and won’t require a full closure.”

But to the folks fishing on the pier, it was a day for sunny smiles as they returned to their favorite pastimes of fishing, crabbing and reveling in the special ambiance of the Edmonds fishing pier.

Gilbert Campbell of Richmond Beach
untangles his crab trap line.

“Fishermen are as crazy as golfers, and I’m both,” said Gilbert Campbell of Richmond Beach as he untangled his crab trap line.

“I wore my golf clothes this morning, and as soon as I get these crab traps set, I’m off for a tee time.

"Talk about a perfect day — fishing in the morning, golf in the afternoon and fresh crab for dinner.

"It doesn’t get any better than this!”
