King County Library System receives $133,252 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop a Climate Action Plan

Saturday, October 7, 2023

The King County Library System (KCLS) received a $133,252 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to develop a Climate Action Plan over the next two years under the Climate Smart Humanities Organizations program.

The KCLS Foundation will match the amount that NEH awarded by July 2024, for a total of $266,504 in grant funding.

NEH supports research, education, preservation and public programs in the humanities. The Climate Smart program is one of three new grant programs that NEH created under the agency’s American Tapestry: Weaving Together Past, Present and Future initiative, which leverages the humanities to strengthen our democracy, advance equity for all and address our changing climate.

The program enables cultural organizations — such as museums, libraries, archives and humanities centers — to develop strategic Climate Action Plans.

In this round of funding, NEH awarded $41.3 million in grants for 280 humanities projects across the country.

KCLS was the only library system in the nation to receive the NEH grant to produce a Climate Action Plan.

“The NEH grant funds will help KCLS do its part to preserve and protect the environment for current and future generations to come,” said KCLS Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum.
“We look forward to establishing and implementing our Climate Action Plan to further improve energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint.”

The Climate Action Plan will align with federal, tribal, state, and local climate goals and priorities. KCLS will work with technical consultants to assess current greenhouse gas emissions, water and energy usage, and establish a measurable plan to implement conservation strategies.

The grant funding from NEH and the KCLS Foundation will help supplement green efforts already underway at KCLS, which has long committed to environmental stewardship.

KCLS has been incorporating green building practices into library renovations and new construction for the past 15 years. In 2022, KCLS partnered with Puget Sound Energy to go carbon neutral at most library buildings.

And KCLS’ Capital Bond Building Program, made possible by a voter-approved bond measure in 2004, included eco-friendly building designs, green roofs, rain gardens and other features ranging from carpeting to plumbing.

“Our environment and our libraries are two precious resources that must be protected and cared for,” added KCLS Foundation Executive Director Lisa Yamasaki.
“The KCLS Foundation is looking forward to raising funds to match the NEH grant award. KCLS’ Climate Action Plan will benefit our communities for years to come and it's a privilege to be a part of that.”

Founded in 1942, the King County Library System (KCLS) is one of the busiest public library systems in the country. Supporting the communities of King County (outside the city of Seattle), KCLS has 50 libraries and serves nearly 1.6 million people.

King County Archives awarded grant to digitize 200 archival items

Friday, September 29, 2023

King County Archives building

The Washington Digital Heritage (WDH) grant program for the 2023-2024 federal fiscal year was developed to support public, tribal, special, and academic libraries in carrying out a variety of digital initiatives focused on archival and special collections.

Proposals receiving priority consideration for award included those demonstrating: broad accessibility of project outputs to the general public; a desire to develop sustainable local digital programs; and adoption and/or dissemination of regional standards and approaches to digitization.

Thirteen libraries received awards for 2023-2024. Progress on the grant projects will run through August 31, 2024.

This grant was awarded by the Office of the Secretary of State, Washington State Library Division, funded by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The King County Archives was awarded $14,495

King County Archives will digitize at least 200 selected archival items from its collections and create an online exhibit about the developments of disability rights and services in King County government.

The exhibit will highlight how issues of freedom, race, justice, equity, and economic opportunity impacted those with disabilities in King County and Washington state.

King County Archives will hire student assistants to help digitize materials, a social media and graphic design contractor to help with promotion, a writing and editing contractor for the exhibit narrative, and a specialist from the University of Washington’s Center for Technology and Disability Studies to audit the exhibit to ensure it meets web content accessibility guidelines.

Through the work in creating the exhibit, King County Archives will also develop a set of best practices for creating accessible online exhibits. The project will be shared through social media, OER commons, and announcements targeted to King County employees and other information professionals.

The archives is located at 1215 E Fir St, Seattle WA 98122

King County Library System (KCLS) Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum announces retirement November 30

Wednesday, July 26, 2023

Lisa Rosenblum to retire
as KCLS Executive Director
ISSAQUAH, WASH. — July 25, 2023 — King County Library System (KCLS) Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum has announced her retirement, effective November 30, 2023.

Rosenblum joined KCLS in January 2018. KCLS has won numerous awards for outstanding services and innovation during her tenure, including a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for three consecutive years.

This year, KCLS was also named a National Medal finalist by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for the first time.

Rosenblum demonstrated an unwavering commitment to patrons throughout the coronavirus pandemic. She brought innovative services and a sense of connection to communities by implementing new online programming, expanding digital collections, boosting Wi-Fi hotspots in library parking lots, and creating safe and convenient access to print materials through curbside service and 24/7 library lockers.

Furthermore, she established partnerships with Public Health—Seattle - King County to provide vaccine clinics, test kits and masks in libraries, and to help distribute personal protective equipment (PPE) to nonprofits across the county.

In 2019, she oversaw the completion of the 2004 Capitol Bond Building Program. The voter-approved $172 million Capital Bond funded the construction of 17 new libraries, 11 expanded libraries, 15 renovated libraries, a parking-lot expansion and a three-level garage.

Rosenblum also created and opened Makerspaces at the Bellevue and Federal Way Libraries in 2018 and 2022, respectively. Makerspaces provide free hands-on learning opportunities for people of all ages to explore emerging technologies.

In 2020, Rosenblum established a new diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) department, which has strengthened KCLS’ commitment to provide equitable services to its communities.

And this spring, she gained the KCLS Board of Trustees’ approval to remove late fines for overdue materials and to clear all late fine accruals from patron accounts. Removing late fines increases accessibility and encourages library use for all patrons.

A distinguished librarian, Rosenblum has spent the past 35 years working for public libraries. Prior to joining KCLS, she served as the director and chief librarian of the Brooklyn Public Library, as well as the director of multiple library systems in Silicon Valley.

The KCLS Board of Trustees is charged with hiring the new executive director. They will conduct a national search for the position with the support of an executive-level search firm.

"While the decision to retire was not an easy one, I am thankful that my nearly 20-year run as a library director will end at KCLS,” said KCLS Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum. “I have been honored to serve King County residents, and I am proud of the extraordinary work we continue to do to help our patrons grow, learn and thrive.”

About the King County Library System:

Founded in 1942, the King County Library System (KCLS) is one of the busiest public library systems in the country. Supporting the communities of King County (outside the city of Seattle), KCLS has 50 libraries and serves nearly 1.6 million people.

In 2022, residents checked out 7.9 million digital eBooks and audiobooks through OverDrive, making KCLS the second-highest digital circulating library system in the U.S. In 2011, KCLS was named Library of the Year by Gale/Library Journal.
