King County Library System’s annual Summer Reading Program begins June 1

Sunday, May 28, 2023

The King County Library System (KCLS) invites King County residents of all ages to participate in its annual Summer Reading Program.

Participants are encouraged to track minutes spent reading from June 1 to August 31. Visit kcls.org/summer for more information, including reading recommendations and a list of events. The website will launch on June 1 when the program begins.

Program participants are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes per day, but they may set their own reading goals. They may read anything they choose to, and reading to someone else or listening to an audiobook counts toward reading minutes as well.

Starting June 1, patrons may pick up a reading log at a KCLS library to track their progress, or they may use the Beanstack app to log reading time online.

Participants may earn prizes for reaching their reading goals. Each time a patron meets their daily goal, they mark a shape on their reading or activity log.
  • When participants mark 25 shapes, they may receive a Halfway Prize;
  • When they mark 50 shapes, they may receive a Finisher Prize.
  • Prizes may be picked up beginning July 1 and are available while supplies last. Prizes are made possible by the King County Library System Foundation, and each category includes the following:
    • Halfway Prize - A KCLS Reader patch, with artwork from local artist Jenna Riggs.
    • The patron’s name posted on the Community Board at their library.
    • Finisher Prize - A journal that celebrates being a KCLS Reader, with artwork from local artist Jenna Riggs.
    • A sticker next to the patron’s name on the Community Board at their library.
Patrons may also participate in fun and educational activities all summer long, such as arts and crafts workshops, music and magic programs, outdoor StoryWalks, STEM learning opportunities and a variety of literary events.

“We are excited to kick off another summer of reading,” said KCLS Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum. “And with KCLS’ recently expanded hours of operation, our community of readers can enjoy even more time at their library to browse for books, read with friends and participate in events.”

Reading is important for all ages. Research shows that children and teens grow their reading skills when they choose their own books and read for enjoyment.

It is especially important to keep children’s minds active and engaged during the summer to prevent learning loss while students are out of school. Reading for pleasure also benefits adults. It improves brain health, reduces stress, and offers opportunities for learning and growth.

Founded in 1942, the King County Library System (KCLS) is one of the busiest public library systems in the country. Supporting the communities of King County (outside the city of Seattle), KCLS has 50 libraries and serves nearly 1.6 million people. In 2022, residents checked out 7.9 million digital eBooks and audiobooks through OverDrive, making KCLS the second-highest digital circulating library system in the U.S. In 2011, KCLS was named Library of the Year by Gale/Library Journal.

Comics and Cosplay at Shoreline Library for comic book fans

Browsers check out the offerings at Shoreline Library comic book day

According to Popverse.com, Free Comic Book Day was the brainchild of retailer Joe Field in 2001, inspired by Baskin-Robbins’ “Free Scoop Night” promotional efforts at his local ice cream parlor.

Darth Vader and R2D2 had a brief skirmish at the library

The first FCBD took place the next year, giving away more than two million comic books from just four publishers. It was such a success that it quickly became an annual event.

Time for a photo op with Captain America at the Shoreline Library

It is held the first Saturday in May, this year on May 6, 2023, at participating libraries and stores. Locally, the Shoreline Library and Arcane Comics in Shoreline can be counted on to participate.

Comic book day brings some interesting patrons to the library

The Shoreline Library welcomes cosplayers for the event, delighting fans and all library patrons with appearances by R2D2, Storm Troopers, and other characters.

Boxes of comics at Arcane Comics stretched across two storefronts

Arcane Comics, with less interior space than the library, put their offerings in a long row of boxes in front of the store so shoppers could browse at will.

Shoppers went inside the store as well to check out the offerings

Of course they have the distinct advantage of being open year-round! They are located in Parkwood Plaza at 15202 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133, across the street from Jersey's Great Food and Spirits.

King County Library System to discontinue late fines for overdue items

Sunday, April 30, 2023

Shoreline Library photo by Steven H. Robinson

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — April 27, 2023 — Beginning May 9, the King County Library System(KCLS) will stop charging late fines for library items that are overdue. They will also clear all late fine accruals from patron accounts. KCLS’ Board of Trustees approved these changes on April 26.

Last year, the Board asked staff to analyze the impact of late fines. KCLS staff gathered and reviewed relevant data for six months, and presented their findings to the board on March 29.

The presentation included the following highlights:
  1. Late fines worsen inequality and discourage library use. Individuals with low-income and limited access to transportation and technology are most impacted.
  2. Late fines generate little revenue. In recent years, fines made up less than 1% of KCLS’ operating budget.
  3. Late fine revenue continues to decrease over time. This trend correlates with patrons’ interest in more digital and fewer physical items. Digital titles return automatically and do not accrue late fines.
  4. Collecting fines from patrons also has costs. Associated expenses include staff time, payment processing fees, printing notices and more.
  5. A majority of peer libraries have eliminated late fines.
Local King county libraries: Richmond Beach, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore.

Replacement fees are different from late fines. If library materials are more than 60 days overdue, they are considered lost. KCLS must still charge replacement fees for lost, damaged and missing items, as required by state law.

Founded in 1942, the King County Library System (KCLS) is one of the busiest public library systems in the country. Supporting the communities of King County (outside the city of Seattle), KCLS has 50 libraries and serves nearly 1.6 million people.
