Ahead of the Curve - Washington Women, 1910-2020
Presented by John Hughes (Ahead of the Curve) and Legacy Washington.

Wednesday, September 30, 7-8pm

Washington has been Ahead of the Curve since it first granted women the right to vote in 1883.

In 1910, our state became the fifth to include women's suffrage in its constitution — a decade ahead of the nation. And Washington women keep blazing trails in fields from science to bridge building.

Discover the pioneering spirit of some larger-than-life women and little-known stories with big impacts on Washington, the nation and beyond.

Presented by John Hughes, Co-Author and Chief Historian Legacy Washington.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Island Library. In partnership with Mercer Island Historical Society.

Author Voices: Pramila Jayapal with Nick Licata

Wednesday, September 2, 2020

Author Voices: Pramila Jayapal
Tuesday, September 8, 7-8:30pm

Join us for a conversation about political engagement with U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, author of Use the Power You Have. Former Seattle City Councilmember Nick Licata will moderate.

A former Washington State Senator and a lifelong organizer for immigrant, civil and human rights, U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) was elected to Congress in 2016 where she now serves as the Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Born in India before coming to the United States alone at the age of 16, she was the first South Asian American woman elected to the House of Representatives and is one of only 14 immigrants serving in Congress. She currently serves on the Judiciary Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Education and Labor Committee.

Nick Licata is from a working-class family, where neither parent graduated from high school. Licata, who couldn’t read until the age of nine, was the first of his relatives to attend college.

He led the local chapter of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) at Bowling Green State University and subsequently was elected student body president. He became a Seattle City Councilmember despite being significantly outspent, with the majority of the council, the mayor, and both daily newspapers supporting his opponent. He was elected to five terms to the council and became its president.

In 2012 he was named Progressive Municipal Official of the Year by The Nation. He was twice named Best Local Politician by the Seattle Weekly. He was an acknowledged leader in passing Paid Sick and Safe Leave, raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and legalizing marijuana. He initiated the founding of Local Progress, the national municipal policy network and served as its first chairman.

He is the author of two books: Becoming a Citizen Activist: Stories, Strategies, and Advice for Changing Our World and Princess Biana and the Vandals, a children’s novel.

Use the Power You Have is available for purchase from Third Place Books, 206-366-3333.

Prepare for the event and get help with technical questions by reading the Crowdcast attendee guide. If you're having issues with video quality, click the gear icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and change your resolution from "Auto" to 360p.

If you would like to watch the conversation with live captioning, please visit the King County Library System's YouTube Channel on the day of the event to view a simulcast. Automatically generated live captions use machine learning, and the result is imperfect but helpful for many. Chat on YouTube will not be monitored. This event will be recorded. A video with captions will be available on our YouTube channel. An audio-only version will appear in our podcast feed, with a transcript in the show notes. These alternative access points will be available about a week after the event.

Do you have questions for the author? Submit your questions using the "Ask a question" button. Audience members may also vote for the questions they would like to hear answered. Questions submitted in the chat will not be monitored. It's likely that there will not be time to answer every question. Questions will be chosen by the author and moderator.

Part of the Author Voices series, made possible with support from the King County Library System Foundation.

Date: Monday, June 8
Start Time: 4:00 PM

Experienced teacher Wes Weddell will start with the basics and introduce some easy chords that fit with familiar songs (digital handouts will be provided). We’ll cover how to hold the uke, tune it, and strum it, as well as what you can do to practice on your own. Given the limitations of the digital platform, if parents can help younger students arrive in tune (lots of videos on YouTube), or stick around at the beginning to help, that will go a long way toward us getting good use out of the time.

Sponsored by the King County Library System Foundation. Classes will use Zoom as a platform, and participants will be asked to mute themselves during songs to accommodate Zoom’s limitations processing audio from multiple sources. Please register by 10am the day of the event. The Zoom link will be sent to you by email.

KCLS offers personalized financial assistance service

Monday, June 1, 2020

The King County Library System (KCLS) launched a new reference service to help patrons find financial resources in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Financial Assistance Navigation Service is available in a variety of languages, and helps point King County residents to the financial assistance programs they need, such as business loans, unemployment claims and rent assistance.

Residents looking for guidance may visit this website to complete an online form detailing their small business and/or personal financial needs, and they will receive personalized financial information and referrals from KCLS staff.

Those without computer or Internet access may call for assistance instead of completing the request online at 800-462-9600.

“It can be overwhelming to navigate through all the complex government resources and application processes,” said KCLS Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum. “KCLS staff can help make sense of the information, and connect residents to the assistance they need.”

Founded in 1942, the King County Library System (KCLS) is one of the busiest public library systems in the country. Serving the communities of King County (outside the City of Seattle), KCLS currently has 50 libraries and more than 700,000 cardholders.

In 2019, residents checked out more than 5.6 million digital eBooks and audiobooks through Rakuten OverDrive, making KCLS the No. 3 digital circulating library in the world. In 2011, KCLS was named Library of the Year by Gale/Library Journal.

KCLS’ annual Summer Reading Program moves online

Wednesday, May 27, 2020

The King County Library System (KCLS) is pleased to offer their annual Summer Reading Program online this year while KCLS Libraries continue to remain closed to help slow the spread of COVID-19. For those up to the challenge, KCLS encourages residents of all ages to read 1,000 minutes from June 1 to August 31.

Residents can participate in hundreds of fun and educational online activities throughout the summer with arts and crafts, music and magic programs, Story Times, STEM learning opportunities and a variety of literary events. Visit kcls.org/summer for the most up-to-date information on events and activities.

“KCLS’ Summer Reading Program may look different this year, but we are committed to keeping children’s minds active and engaged while school is out to help prevent the “summer slide,” said KCLS Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum.
“KCLS staff have worked hard to redesign this multifaceted program into a fully virtual experience. We hope residents enjoy the programming, and have fun reading this summer. ”

This year’s theme is “Imagine Your Story,” and participants are invited to unlock their imaginations, and embark on a reading adventure of their choosing. Reading to someone or listening to an audiobook also counts towards their minutes. Everyone who reads for 500 minutes or more can enter a raffle for a prize package of books, and one winner will be chosen from each Library location after August 31.

Past participants will recognize the online app, Beanstack, from previous years’ reading challenges. Patrons may use Beanstack to log their reading hours, or they can choose to print a downloadable reading log to track hours instead.

With KCLS investing more funds in its digital collection during the closure, there are more eBooks and audiobooks to choose from, and a variety of titles to help patrons reach their reading goals. Participants looking for inspiration can browse through a selection of book recommendations curated by KCLS staff to find great titles and get started.

“In this difficult time, the need for connection and community is even more acute,” added KCLS Youth and Family Services Manager Rekha Kuver.
“Although we are physically distant from one another, we will continue to provide meaningful ways for people to come together online as a community of readers and learners.”
