How to get your government to respond to you - Tuesday at LFP Library

Sunday, January 13, 2019

People often feel frustrated when they think local government ignores their concerns.

There are reasonable and clear steps that can be taken not only to be heard, but also to get government to change their policies.

It does take time and diligence, but with a well-defined strategy, improvements can be made, and more quickly than you might expect.

Presenter Nick Licata, author of Becoming a Citizen Activist and former Seattle City Council member, will go through the strategies that have worked and discuss how they can be applied in practical ways.

Tuesday, January 15, 2019, 7- 9pm Lake Forest Park Library, lower level Town Center (by escalator) intersection Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

What Parents and Educators need to know about smart kids - Feb 4

Friday, December 14, 2018

Austina De Bonte
The Shoreline Hi Cap Advocacy Group, in partnership with the Shoreline PTA Council, is excited to welcome back Austina De Bonte, president of the Northwest Gifted Child Association (NWGCA), to Shoreline for her presentation, "What Parents and Educators Need to Know About Smart Kids."

Many people are surprised to learn that their bright child’s unique “quirks” are actually well-studied social and emotional behavior patterns that appear across large populations of highly intelligent children.

Whether it’s refusing to wear shirts with buttons or tags, overreacting to the slightest criticism, gravitating towards adults and older children, forgetting to turn in their homework, trouble with handwriting, anxiety about trying something new, or preferring a book to a party, these and many other perplexing behaviors are common in this population.

Learn what’s normal, what to expect as they grow, and why genuine challenge is vitally important for kids’ social and emotional development, as well as developing their academic talents, from the preschool and elementary years all the way to high school and beyond.

Speaker: Austina De Bonte of the Northwest Gifted Child Association

Not Just for Kids: How kids and adults can use children’s books from around the globe to navigate our complicated world

Sunday, October 28, 2018

AAUW Seattle and AAUW Edmonds SnoKing cordially invite you to a presentation on children’s literature by Dr. Ana Taranath of the Washington Humanities Speakers Bureau.

In this talk, Dr. Taranath will showcase children’s books from around the world, as well as diverse communities in the United States.

She will invite audiences to take a closer look at children’s books and suggest ways we adults might also learn some new lessons about how to navigate our complicated world.

Within these seemingly simple stories are important messages about how we think about our differences, and importantly, how we might rethink our similarities.

Dr. Taranath is interested in creating a program around children’s literature that asks, “Who has been published? Who is not being published? What do you think that means? Can books help us get along better, and if we think so, how? If not, what do we do?”

Saturday, November 10, 2018. Program at 10:30am.
Third Place Commons, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park

All are welcome. No charge. Free Parking.
