Julian Anderson steps down as president of LFP Stewardship Foundation

Friday, January 8, 2021

Julian Anderson steps down as President of the
Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation
Julian Andersen, who has served as Board President since November 2016, stepped down from leadership of the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation effective December 31, 2020. but will continue serving on the Board.

A retired college teacher and newspaper publisher, Julian has long been involved in protecting LFPs natural environment.

Many recognize him as an eloquent speaker at City Council meetings, and a friendly face at our Farmer's Market and Green Fair booths.

Julian was President during the intense and ultimately successful Campaign to Save Five Acre Woods.

In his resignation, Julian wrote:

"My years as president have been challenging and rewarding. I will always be thankful for the spirit and dedication of all the board members with whom I worked. It was an honor to be seen as a spokesperson for the Stewardship Foundation, in settings both formal and informal.
"There are many opportunities for ongoing Stewardship Foundation activism. I look forward to playing a part in future activities and in supporting the new President."

The Foundation continues in good hands, as Kim Josund is serving as president for 2021.

As the annual meeting and Board elections have been rescheduled because of the pandemic, the board is planning a virtual event for the end of February (details to come) and then return to our regular cycle with a meeting in November 2021, hopefully in-person!

LFP Stewardship Foundation funds intern to gather data about tree removals and replacement in LFP

Tuesday, August 28, 2018

There’s a new intern in the City of Lake Forest Park (LFP), thanks again to funding made available from King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski, and Elizabeth Louden, Grant Manager at the King County WaterWorks Grant Program.

The grant recipient, the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation, is partnering with Steve Bennett, the City of LFP’s Planning Department Director, and UW Bothell’s Dr. Rob Turner, Senior Lecturer in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, with coordination provided by Tyson Greer, of the LFP Tree Board, to provide a UWB student intern to gather data about tree removals and replacement.

This tree data will be useful to the City Council, City Arborist, the Tree Board, and the public in evaluating the effectiveness of the Tree Preservation and Enhancement Ordinance, including enforcement.

As communities at the north end of Lake Washington such as Lake Forest Park move forward with the implementation of the Return Kokanee to Our Streams Project, the data gathered will be critical for long term planning, and making decisions concerning trees in land use development and avoiding salmon habitat loss.

Other cities in the region, such as Seattle, are spending heavily to replace their tree canopies so they can also benefit from the tree services an urban forest provides.

The entire region looks to Lake Forest Park for leadership in urban forest enhancement and preservation.

Walk to 5 Acre Woods on Saturday - listen to the birds sing

Learn About Community Efforts to Create an Urban Forest Park with Trails

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF) invites the community to join us for “A Walk to 5 Acre Woods Event” at 10:30am on Saturday, June 10, 2017.

The month’s event features a bird walk and talk by Ben Pedigo. Ben is a Lake Forest Park native and birding enthusiast who is an active member of the University of Washington’s Birding Club.

Ben will lead a bird walk on the way to the woods, so bring your binoculars and bird guides and join the fun. Learn about the feathered residents of our urban forest and how to recognize their songs. Families are welcomed and encouraged. We will also provide updates on the latest progress for the project.

The 5 Acre Woods site is the largest remaining mature forest within the area. It includes a wetland, a tributary of Lyon Creek, and serves as an important wildlife corridor.

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF), a community based nonprofit association, advocates strongly for the City of Lake Forest Park to purchase this property to develop an urban forest park with trails.

The Foundation has spearheaded grant writing and fundraising activities to assist the City toward meeting that goal.

Community matching funds for those grants are key to successful acquisition of the land.

If you would like to contribute to our fundraising efforts, contact Brad Keefe (keefeba@gmail.com) to donate, pledge or volunteer for fundraising.

Seattle Public Utility, the current property owner, plans to sell the property later this summer, so community support for the project is critical to our success.

Meet in front of the Lake Forest Park Elementary School, 18500 37th Ave NE, Lake Forest Park – parking available in the school parking lot, and proceed along the pedestrian walkway on 40th Place NE, to take a short walk to 5 Acre Woods.

Refreshments will be provided at the end of the walk courtesy of Honey Bear Bakery and the Seattle Green Space Coalition

The walk will occur rain or shine at 10:30am on Saturday, June 10, 2017.

Remember to save the date for the July 8, 2017 walk featuring wetland biologist Sarah Cooke, who will speak about the importance of wetlands. See the 5 Acre Woods Facebook page for more information.

If you are interested in volunteering, contact Lisa Pedigo.
