Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation (KBGF) Board of Directors accepting applications for new members

Saturday, October 30, 2021

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden
The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation is now accepting applicants to join the Board of Directors, starting in January 2022.

We welcome all, but please note this year we are especially looking for a Board member with an accounting/financial background to fill our Treasurer role, and also a Board member interested in Volunteer Organizing.

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation is a volunteer organization of passionate community members who, through fundraising and grants, support the vision of growing the garden into a resource for learning, gathering, and a place of peace and tranquility for all.

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden is a unique park in the Richmond Beach Neighborhood in Shoreline that is maintained and preserved by the Foundation in partnership with the City of Shoreline.

In addition to being a beautiful botanic garden filled with native and unusual specimens, it’s also a growing nonprofit.

Please consider joining our Board of dedicated members. We work hard, but we also have a lot of fun along the way.

The ideal candidate:
  • Is passionate about building community and fostering green space for all
  • Has a desire to help grow the Foundation through fundraising
  • Will support growing outdoor education programming for all ages
  • Enjoys horticulture, botany...or just loves plants and gardening!
Board members are expected to:
  • Attend monthly meetings (third Tuesday of each month)
  • Volunteer on committees and at garden events
  • Focus on fundraising to further the goals of the foundation
  • Act as an ambassador for the GardenIf you are interested, we'd love to meet you! Please apply by emailing our Board President, Katie Schielke, at katie.schielke@gmail.com by no later than November 19, 2021.

Kruckeberg meets its fundraising goal

Friday, October 8, 2021

Last week, (see previous article) the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden reported that their annual fundraiser had fallen short of goal and asked the community if they could help.

The community stepped up. Here's the letter from Joseph Abken, Executive Director, Kruckeberg Botanic Garden.

Earthcorps created this pathway at Kruckeberg. Photo courtesy KBG

To our community,

Last week we asked you to help us get to our Fund-a-Need goal of $30,000 for education and programs at the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden. You humbled us with your response and got us over the line. Our overall goal for the Garden Party fundraiser was $60,000. I’m pleased to say that we met our goal at $61,765. This is the most we have raised in Garden Party history or at least for the seven years of data that I have.

This fundraiser is significant for us in several ways. Our role at the garden is all-encompassing. We are the caretakers, administrators, and educators. We raise most of the income needed to perform these roles, Garden Party being just one of the avenues to achieve this. Nursery sales account for about 20% of our revenue.

Memberships and donations are also significant sources. And finally, our annual contract with the City of Shoreline gives us another $40,000. In the last few years, programs and education have grown in demand and have contributed more.

The operational budget does limit staffing at the garden. We have a full-time director, a part-time educator, and three part-time horticultural staff. As a paid staff, we do not have paid benefits outside of vacation and sick leave. Medical and dental benefits, as well as retirement packages, are outside our current capacity to support.

This year the foundation is committed to focusing on three goals: financial improvements, educational programs, and people (staff, board members, and volunteers). Through financial improvement, we can facilitate the other two goals more significantly. Already you have impacted the capacity of education this coming year with your generosity and support.

Our time and resource demands have expanded as the garden grows in popularity with visitation, growth in programs, and onsite events. Our budgetary constraints, however, continue to be what they are. Therefore, financial growth and stability are more important than ever.

Over the next year, we will make plans and goals for the future of the foundation. Through dedicated and hardworking board members, staff, and volunteers, I know that we are on our way to making meaningful improvements for the foundation and the garden.

Thank you again for your support. If you would like to join us and help contribute, please consider applying to our Board of Directors, sign up for volunteering, or donate. Contact Joe Abken at joe@kruckeberg.org and visit our website at kruckeberg.org

Sincerely,

Joseph Abken

Kruckeberg fundraiser falls short - can you help?

Kruckeberg walking tour photo by Wayne Pridemore

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation held its annual fundraiser September 26, 2021 at The Lodge at St Edwards Park in the newly renovated historic art deco building.

This year, garden friends gathered to reconnect and contribute to KBG operations and a specific FUND-A-NEED goal to raise $30,000 to increase educational programming at the Garden.

This past year we were so grateful for easy access to nature that nurtures body and spirit.

To ensure that nature is protected now and preserved for the future, we plan to expand programming for children and adults.

We raised $26,120 on Sunday but there is still time for those who missed this opportunity to donate to this FUND-A-NEED at  https://www.kruckeberg.org/donate/

Shoreline Rotary will hear about Kruckeberg Garden at Wednesday meeting

Sunday, July 4, 2021

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden photo by Wayne Pridemore

Join in for a Zoom Rotary meeting Wednesday morning, July 7, 2021. Our meeting starts at 7:30am with President Debbie Tarry!

It’s summer and a great time to get outside to explore our community. Our Rotary Guest Speaker will be Joe Abken, Executive Director for the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden in Shoreline.

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden is a four-acre public garden showcasing Pacific Northwest native plants and rare non-native species in a naturalistic woodland setting.

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden was founded in 1958 when Dr. Art Kruckeberg and his wife Mareen moved to a 4-acre farmhouse in Shoreline. Over the ensuing decades they created the Garden, growing nearly every plant from seed or cutting.

Art and Mareen took an informal, naturalistic approach to design, combining Northwest native plants with unusual and rarely cultivated species collected from the West coast and around the world. The result is a unique Puget Sound woodland garden.

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Celebrates Juneteenth and Pride

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Celebrates Juneteenth and Pride

Celebrating Black Botanists, gardeners, farmers

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden is excited to observe Juneteenth with celebrating the lives and accomplishments of a few of our nation’s many Black botanists, landscape architects, gardeners, and farmers in our community. Starting June 19, 2021 this series of short essays will be on display in the lower Garden through summer 2021.
.
Celebrate Pride all month long!

The Garden will “rock” our own rainbow flag in celebration of June LGBT+ Pride month. A colorful river of painted rocks will flow through the upper garden, arranged in the colors of the LGBT+ flag.

Join in creating this river! Paint a rock with your own design or message of love and bring it to the Garden any weekend in June. All month, watch the river grow!

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. (History.com)

Kruckeberg Garden Party reaches fundraising goal

Fall in Kruckeberg Botanic Garden

By Joseph Abken
Executive Director
Kruckeberg Botanic Garden

September closed out with a bang! We held our annual fundraiser, Garden Party, on September 26, 2020.

As a virtual event, we went into the planning process with trepidation, anxiety, dread…uncertainty.

COVID-19 has pushed us all to the edge of our abilities, only to show us that we are all capable of so much more.

With every shadow of gloom, there has been a streaming beam of light from our community.

Whether it was a PPP loan from Heritage Bank or random donations, we have experienced incredible support through it all.

But our community really turned it out for us at the virtual Garden Party, where you helped us achieve our goal of raising $50,000.

Through a list of incredible sponsors, ticket sales, meal purchases, auction items, and paddle raises, you’ve given us the chance to continue our efforts to not only maintain the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden but to maintain the momentum we have started with education programs and garden improvements.

T H A N K Y O U!
