Kruckeberg Botanic Garden will be closed until further notice

From Joseph Abken, Executive Director
Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation

Yesterday, we decided to close the Garden until further notice.

This decision did not come easily. Our amazing staff has been dedicated to keeping the garden and MsK Nursery open to provide our community a refuge during these stressful times.

As we continue to monitor the ever-unfolding events of this crisis, we feel it is our responsibility to close out of concern for the safety of our guests, volunteers, and staff. This last week has been the hardest for our organization, just as it has for so many.

As you are abundantly aware, this pandemic could not have come at a worse time for public gardens everywhere. These are the prime months of support that we gear up for and anticipate annually to keep us working. The loss of spring plant sales, canceled programs, events, and workshops, has severed a significant part of our support system.

During this closure, we will be keeping you informed of our status, posting images of the Garden on Facebook and Instagram, and providing additional resources for families on our Kids Only page. The staff and I will continue garden maintenance and care for our nursery stock despite this closure.

We look forward to opening our gates and welcoming you back when this is once again safe for all to enjoy.

That day will come.

CANCELLED: Memorial to co-founder to be dedicated at Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Mar 21

Tuesday, March 10, 2020

Tony Angell

This event has been cancelled

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation will dedicate a memorial to its co-founder at 2pm, Saturday March 21, 2020.
It will feature a bronze raven, sculpted by Lake Forest Park resident Tony Angell, perched on a basalt column.

The ceremony will be held on Art Kruckeberg’s 100th birthday and is open to the public. He was 96 when he died.

Dr. Kruckeberg, long the chairman of the UW botany department and a prolific writer, started the garden with his wife Mareen in 1958.

It is now home to more than 2,000 species on four acres in Richmond Beach and is owned by the City of Shoreline.

Both Art and Mareen Kruckeberg were active with local horticultural societies and helped form several that are still active today, such as the Washington Native Plant Society, the Hardy Fern Foundation, the Northwest Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society and the Northwest Horticultural Society.

They collaborated on the creation of Gardening with Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest, a classic gardening guide, named one of the top 50 gardening books of all time by the American Horticultural Society.

Artist Tony Angell, who helped to illustrate Dr. Kruckeberg’s The Natural History of Puget Sound Country, will be the featured speaker. He will address the role of ravens in his life, the role of Raven in Indigenous cultures, and the role of his raven in Art and Mareen’s garden.

A reception will follow the ceremony. The Garden is located at 20312 15th Ave NW in Shoreline.

Volunteer opportunities with Kruckeberg Botanic Garden children's programs

Tuesday, April 23, 2019

Campers at Kruckeberg

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden has opportunities to volunteer with their children's programs.

Summer Camps
  • Friends in the Forest, July 8-12
  • Backyard Botany, July 15-19
  • Garden Gumshoes, July 22-26
Camps run Monday-Friday, 8:30am - 3:30pm

Each summer camp has a different nature theme and is geared toward a certain age group.

July 8-12 and 22-26 are camps for kids entering 1st-3rd grade. July 15-19 is for kids entering 4th-6th grade.

We are looking for volunteer counselors to assist campers during activities, play games, enforce camp rules as needed, and make every camper feel known.

An extensive knowledge of plants and animals is not required, but volunteers should possess enthusiasm about nature and excitement to work with kids in a naturalistic garden setting. We ask that summer camp volunteers commit to a full camp session (five days), or more if so desired.

Garden Tots

Fridays from 9:30am - 1:15pm
June 7-August 30

Garden Tots is a drop-in program for families with children ages 3-7 years old. It consists of a garden exploration activity and a craft focused on a different nature theme each week.

Volunteers set up materials for the day's activities, check-in families, help with the art project, and clean up. Volunteers should be a welcoming presence in the garden and comfortable interacting with young children and their families. Volunteers can sign up for as many of the dates as they like, but please let us know ahead of time!

Field Trips

2-hour time commitment, at most

Field trips, mostly for preschool through second grade, occur throughout the school year. Volunteers help guide simple activities, based on seasonal field trip themes, at a Garden station through which groups of children rotate. Field trips last for an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the age group. They often begin at 10:30am.

These programs are great opportunities for high school and college students (but others not in those categories are also welcomed). Will consider volunteers ages 14 and older. We provide training to familiarize volunteers with program material.

Interested? Email Jessi via jessi@kruckeberg.org or call 206-546-1281 ext. 70.

Spring Plant Sale brings in $1,500 for Kruckeberg and Audubon

Sunday, April 21, 2019

Volunteers from Kruckeberg and Seattle Audubon

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden worked in partnership with the Seattle Audubon Society as co-recipients of the estate of Kent Slaven, a long-time constituent and supporter of our organizations.
Together they collected as many of his prized and beloved horticultural treasures as they could in February.

As directed by the estate, we were able to keep what we wanted for our own collections and offer the remainder for purchase. As a result, we were able to raise over $1,500.00, for a total of $786.00 for each organization!
