Hats by Shoreline Knitters

The daffodils are popping up and we're already gearing up for next winter to keep those in need warm. During Thanksgiving 2012, local knitters donated over 200 hundred hats to Youth Care and Tent City 3. With your help we can do even more in 2013. This year all of the donations will be distributed to Shoreline organizations helping the needy.

We are expanding to two projects: Warm Hats and Mittens

These can be knitted, crocheted or sewn in all sizes.  To participate:

1.  *Pick up one of our craft bags to make a hat or mittens; includes yarn or fleece and instructions.  You supply the needles or sewing skills.
2.  Craft on your own or create your own group.
3.  Join the Shoreline knitters at Haggen's Market Street Cafe on 175th, Thursdays from 1:00 to 3:30. We are happy to help beginners.

*Free Craft bags can be picked up at the following locations:
  • MPNA Ice Cream Social, Meridan Park School, 3/14 @ 7pm
  • Shoreline Farmers' Market starting in June
  • Shoreline Knitters @ Haggen's (see above)

We have a limited number of bags but will have printed instructions available at these events or email Sis Polin.

Drop off your wonderful creations at the Shoreline City Hall lobby or Haggens on 175th, next to customer service.

And finally, we will have a surprise display at Haggens during the  winter Holiday season.

Tree socks at Meridian Park Elementary

People driving along N 175th noticed that the tree socks that decorated the trees next to Ronald Bog for the Summerset Arts Festival this summer have migrated a block east in front of Meridian Park Elementary.

From Meridian Park, here's the story:

Sixth grade students joined community volunteers, Cynthia Knox and Susan Armstrong, to help place the colorful knitted “tree socks” onto our campus.  These socks were part of the  Celebrate Ronald Bog festival on September 15 in Shoreline. Meridian Park students wanted to borrow them for the holiday season!  Students really enjoyed helping with this project and learned how to sew them onto trees!

More hats from Shoreline knitters

Thank you, Shoreline knitters

By Sis Polin

What a wonderful surprise when I got a call from Carolyn Wurdeman, Executive Assistant at the City of Shoreline, to tell me that the bin with over 100 hats that I emptied a week ago and delivered to Youth Care is half full again.

I recently read about Tent City setting up at the Calvin Presbyterian Church at 3rd NW and NW 185th and delivered over 60 hats to them tonight and told them they were hand knitted for them by the folks from Shoreline.

Thank you all. If you keep knitting, I’ll keep finding a needy place for them.

"Any day spent knitting is a good day"

Thank you to all of the residents of Shoreline for the wonderful hats that you knitted for Youth Care (a caring organization that helps homeless kids) . I delivered over 125 hand knitted hats, some scarves, and some new warm socks.

They were thrilled. Thank you Susan Armstrong and the Thursday Haggen Knitters, Northwest School for the Hearing Impaired Staff, Shorecrest Staff, and one of the most prolific knitters of all, Barbara Groerger, along with Gretchen, Liz, Penny, Donna and all the unnamed knitters who participated.

And thanks to the City of Shoreline for supplying the drop off location and the bin.

See you next year.

Hat for the Homeless gets good community response

Hats for the homeless created by
local knitters

By Sis Polin

What do I love about this?  The positive response that I have received from a community that I have loved for almost 50 years.

I don’t know the faces of most of the knitters, but their emails say a lot – they tell me how happy  they are to be a part of this; people like Barbara Groerger who has knitted approximately 100 hats and is still knitting, the staff at the Northwest School for Hearing Impaired Children who are dropping off hats at the City of Shoreline bin and still knitting away, the Thursday Haggen knitters and a long list I have of many more. I’ll publish the final tally at Thanksgiving.

Thank you all for keeping a homeless person warm.

(See original article - new knitters are always welcome)

Yarn bombers unite for tree socks

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Katherine D'Orazio (left) and Marion Mohrlok (right),
both of Shoreline, knit tree bombs at Swingin' Summer Eve.

Yarn-Bombers Unite for Tree Socks!

Would you like to contribute your knitting skills to a worthy and artistic cause?  Tree socks are a part of the sculpture installation at Summerset Arts Festival: Celebrating Ronald Bog on September 15, 2012.

Knitting parties are being held every Thursday afternoon 1pm-3:30pm at Top Foods at 175th and Midvale in the Market Street Cafe, and also at Shakespeare in the Park on Wednesday, July 25th at Richmond Beach Library Park.

This tree has been Bombed!

These socks are fast and easy - size 11 needles or large Knifty Knitter loom - and yarn is provided so you can play with stripes of your own design. Email Cynthia to say, "Yes, I'm in!", and get more information about supplies and the pattern.  These are needed by September 1st, for installation on September 12.

And of course, you are all welcome on the day of the festival to admire the trees and your excellent handiwork.

The alpacas were quite interested in the shoppers and the knitters

This informal group of knitters has been gathering at The Commons for some time. After a short break, they are back to regular, monthly sessions. Anyone with needles is welcome to join them.

The Commons at Lake Forest Park is located next to Third Place Books and features restaurants, a common dining area, and entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings. 17171 Bothell Way NE (at Ballinger Way) upper level.

Photo: Yarn Bomb

Dale Cameron snapped this photo on June 17, 2011 of a decorated tree at the Shoreline Library.  Guerilla art?  New art installation?  We're not quite sure, but it's certainly interesting.
