King Conservation District annual report: 49,719 trees and shrubs planted in the county in 2019

Friday, September 11, 2020

2019 report
In 2019, KCD planted 49,719 native trees and shrubs to improve habitat on King County forests, shorelines, and farms.

Over our last 5 year work plan, we planted over 327,000 native trees and shrubs!

We also improved just shy of 10 miles of shoreline and helped train over 3,000 people to become better stewards of our waters, soils, and forests.

This year’s report not only captures KCD’s impact in 2019 but also summarizes the body of work conducted within the framework of the King County-King Conservation District Interlocal Agreement spanning 2015 – 2019.

In these challenging times, KCD is finding innovative ways to deliver education, technical assistance, resources, and services to the residents of King County to support the health of our natural environment.

We value our partnerships with King County and many others and look forward to five more years cooperation in making our region the best it can be.

Filing for King Conservation District commissioner deadline December 12

Tuesday, December 3, 2019

The King Conservation District is running its annual election for an open seat on the board of commissioners. This is a great elected office for people who are interested in environmental conservation issues, ensuring we have healthy farmland, soil, and water in our county.

They run the “manure match” program — which provides farm fresh manure and the “landowner incentive program” which pays landowners to enact conservation activities on their properties.

King Conservation District is led by an all-volunteer, five-member board of supervisors. Three of the members are elected while the other two are appointed by the Washington State Conservation Commission, an agency created to assist and guide conservation district activities in Washington State.

Board members contribute local perspectives on important natural resource management and conservation issues, seek feedback about conservation programs from District residents, set KCD policy, and direct KCD’s work plan and budget.

KCD elections occur annually during the first quarter of each year. Elections are conducted pursuant to guidelines established by RCW 89.08 with oversight from the Washington State Conservation Commission.

2020 Board Elections

KCD will be holding an election on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 to fill an open board seat.

The position is open to any registered voter living in the district — which includes all of King County except Federal Way, Milton, Skykomish, Pacific, and Enumclaw which are not part of the conservation district.

The King Conservation District is paid for by a special tax that supports technical assistance and education on water conservation, soil protection, wildlife habitat protection, farm conservation, etc.

Interested candidates, and voters, should follow the instructions below on how to participate in the election, which is a process unique to the District.

For Potential Candidates

Candidate Qualification Due Date: December 12, 2019.

Online election ends Tuesday for Conservation District position

Monday, March 12, 2012

Online voting for a position on the King Conservation District board ends Tuesday, March 13.

The Conservation District includes all of King County except the cities of Enumclaw, Federal Way, Milton, Pacific and Skykomish. All registered voters in the District are eligible to participate in the election.

Unlike other elections, those for positions on the boards of the State’s 47 conservation districts are not conducted by County elections officials or scheduled on dates set by the State Legislature. The 1930 law that established the conservation districts allows them to conduct their own elections using County voter-registration lists. The system saves the districts thousands of dollars.

King Conservation District officials have made some changes from last year’s first online election, Voters can now register, read the voters’ guide and cast their votes in a single session on a computer. Also new this year is an affidavit, which voters must print, sign and return to the District office by mail, fax or e-mail attachment. Voters must complete online voting by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday and send their signed affidavits with a postmark by Wednesday, March 14. The District considers all votes provisional until it can check signatures. This makes the affidavits the equivalent of a signed ballot envelope.

Voters can participate by logging on here and following directions.

Voters who lack internet access can use computers at the Shoreline Library or 10 other libraries around the County, or at the King Conservation District office from 9am to 9pm Tuesday. The office is at 1107 SW Grady Way, Suite 130, Renton 98057.

While last year’s election had four candidates for a single position, this year’s election has only one candidate, Christopher “Kit” Ledbetter of Issaquah for one position.
