Clean air and the asphalt plant in Kenmore

Saturday, December 17, 2022

Asphalt plant in Kenmore
On October 26, 2022, Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) issued a Final Order of Approval for a new permit for the Cadman Asphalt plant in Kenmore.

The permit includes new conditions for the plant, including air quality standards and testing.

On November 22, 2022, Cadman appealed the permit to the Pollution Control Hearings Board and filed a motion to “stay” (i.e. delay) the new permit conditions pending the appeal.

In December, the Kenmore City Council voted to file a petition to the Pollution Control Hearings Board for the City to intervene in the appeal, with the intent to assist Puget Sound Clean Air Agency in arguing for upholding the conditions of the permit.

The City’s request to intervene was granted. The Pollution Control Hearings Board will likely decide whether to approve or deny the stay some time in the second half of January 2023.

Newly refurbished Log Boom Park in Kenmore has something for everyone

Thursday, September 1, 2022

All photos by Steven H. Robinson

Kenmore, WA - Log Boom Park reopened to the public after a year of renovations on the 1.5-acre Waterfront Access and Viewing Project. The project improves waterfront access to Lake Washington while restoring native vegetation for wildlife habitat.

The 3.9 acre park features a range of new amenities including a new sandy beach and lake access area, water access for hand-powered watercraft, a picnic shelter, a boat rental building, public artworks including the signature “Flume” sculpture by Jennifer Dixon, seating, and an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible concrete path promenade.

A local concessionaire, WhatsSup Stand Up Paddle and Surf, will also be on site this summer renting hand-powered watercraft such as kayaks and paddleboards.

Photographer Steve Robinson says "The kayak rental is run by the same person as the rental at Bothell Landing. People can rent a kayak in Bothell and paddle down the river to Kenmore. Then pick up a bicycle and go back to Bothell on the Burke Gilman Trail. This makes for a pretty adventure."

Bicyclists are to dismount and dogs to be on leash

Kenmore Mayor Nigel Herbig remarked that "Residents and visitors to Kenmore will have a much-improved experience when they dip their toes in the sand, launch their kayak, or take in a sunset. I am especially proud of the planning and care taken to preserve, protect and restore the natural habitat along Kenmore's shoreline."

New shrubs, trees protected by rail fencing.

The project includes environmental enhancements such as protection of one acre of on-site wetlands from public access, improvements to aquatic habitat, removal of invasive plant species, and riparian and upland plantings of native vegetation. The work resulted in 106 new trees and over 1,000 new shrubs being planted within the project site.

Sculpture and lake view
"We want to thank the Kenmore community for their support of this project and their patience as we have awaited project completion", said City of Kenmore Project Manager Maureen Colaizzi. We are so excited to share this beautiful new outdoor space with the public."

View of the park from across the lake

Maureen Colaizzi was previously employed by the City of Shoreline Parks department, and among other projects, designed Echo Lake Park.

The park is a pleasant stop off for bicyclists on the Burke Gilman Trail. Parking is about two city blocks from the beach and kayak rental.

Log Boom Park is in Kenmore, at the head of Lake Washington. The address is 17415 61st Ave NE, Kenmore, WA 98028. The Burke Gilman Trail runs through the middle of the park and Bothell Way is within view.

Fireworks and a party in Kenmore to celebrate completion of the West Sammamish River Bridge

Saturday, August 13, 2022

Kenmore celebrates their new bridge
Thousands attended the Grand Opening Celebration of the West Sammamish River Bridge Thursday night, August 11, 2022.

The City of Kenmore temporarily closed the newly completed West Sammamish River Bridge and invited the public to celebrate on the bridge deck with live music and entertainment, food, and other free tokens of appreciation.

“This was our way of saying thank you to all of our residents for supporting the bridge project,” Mayor Nigel Herbig said. “Not only did our taxpayers pay for the bridge, they also endured the inconvenience of the construction. For that, we are grateful.”

$39 million of the $43 million cost of the bridge came from sources outside of Kenmore, including state and federal grants. “I applaud the tenacity and hard work of City Engineer John Vicente and his team for applying for and securing the grants to build the bridge,” said City Manager Rob Karlinsey.

Vicente previously worked on the Aurora Avenue project for the City of Shoreline.

Over 2,000 residents joined together on the bridge deck in celebration of the bridge’s completion. The event began with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6pm and ended with fireworks that were seen and heard around Lake Washington and into central Shoreline.

The bridge is part of 68th Ave which connects Kenmore on both sides of the river. It is the route to St. Edwards Park and Bastyr University. Simonds Road connects to 68th just on the other side of the bridge and leads to north Kirkland.

The bridge features a generous bicycle lane and pedestrian walkway.

Log Boom Park Project update

Tuesday, April 12, 2022

The Log Boom Waterfront Access and Viewing Project is one of the five voter-approved Walkways and Waterways bond measure projects.

Log Boom Park in Kenmore is undergoing a major renovation. Construction began on August 3, 2021 but was interrupted by the concrete delivery drivers' strike.

However, all flatwork concrete has been completed at Log Boom Park.

All that remains is the two boat ramp walls scheduled to be placed on Tuesday this week.

For information on this project visit http://kenmorewa.gov/wwlb

Log Boom Park photos courtesy City of Kenmore

Road Construction Northwest works to finish the project with two additional small concrete pours this week east of the boat rental building and boat access ramp to the water.

RCNW plans to begin painting the boat rental building in the coming weeks. Wetland buffer protection fencing will be installed. The irrigation controller added and system tested. Incremental progress to complete the project hopefully by May. An updated schedule will follow completion of concrete work.

While the contractor has gone to lengths to keep the project schedule moving, including pouring concrete at late hours in the day when delivery was available and procuring concrete from Snohomish County, the strike impacted work on the main ADA pathway to the boat rental building, and the picnic shelter.

The Cake by Bekah Brunstetter (NBC’s This is Us, Starz’s American Gods and founding member of The Kilroys) tells the story of Della in her legendary North Carolina bakery, where life is sweet as she prepares to be a contestant on her favorite television baking competition.

When her best-friend’s daughter comes home from New York City to ask her to make a cake for her upcoming wedding to a woman, Della is forced to re-examine her deeply held beliefs, as questions of morals, judgment and family swirl around them all.

Directed by Cindy Giese French and stage managed by Stacey Hansen, the cast of four includes Amy Gentry, Stephanie Spohrer, Roz Cornejo, and Patrick Hogan, with a creative team of Sarah Kessler (set design), Molly Hall (costume design), Gwyn Skone (lighting design), and William French (sound design).

“I connected with this play the first time I read it.” says French. “Bekah Brunstetter has crafted a beautiful, funny story that cracks open the door, just a bit, to different people’s perspectives.
"Not only does this play have tremendous heart, it’s also very funny. And after all we’ve been through collectively these past 2 years, we desperately need to be able to laugh together.”

Kenmore Deputy: This post is a hoot. Literally.

Monday, November 1, 2021

Whooo would have seen this coming?

On Friday, October 15, 2021 11:33pm, a city of Kenmore deputy was driving near the intersection of NE 194th Place and 55th Avenue NE.

The deputy saw something in the roadway in the northbound lanes of 55th Ave NE. As he drew closer, he saw it was an owl perched on the road near the fog line.

Initially, the deputy thought this poor owl was injured, but determined the feathered friend was just sleeping.

With a pair of thick gloves, and a lot of care, the deputy moved the owl to a nearby park for his/her safety.

How many times will this happen in Deputy Toscano’s career?

Owl bet not a lot.

Kenmore Police: Shoplifter retaliates against store employee

Tuesday, October 5, 2021

Shoplifter threw a rock through store employee's car window

Shoplifting is one thing, but retaliating against a store employee who asks you to leave?

On Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 6:08am, deputies responded to a supermarket located in the 6800 block of NE Bothell Way in Kenmore.

At 4:00am, store employees witnessed a male come in to the store, grab some food items, and then hide inside the restroom.

After several minutes of coaxing, the male came out of the bathroom, and employees escorted him out of the store. They watched as he seemingly walked away eastbound through the parking lot. The employees did not call police.

When his shift ended at 6:00am, an employee who took part in getting the man to leave the store went out to the parking lot and discovered a broken driver’s side window.

A review of store surveillance footage revealed that after the man was escorted from the store, the suspect walked to the victim's vehicle. He picked up a large rock and threw it through the driver's side window, shattering it.

Deputies checked the vicinity but were unable to locate the suspect. At this time, his identity is unknown.

If you recognize the individual, contact police 24-hour non-emergency number at 206-296-3311 and reference case #C21030752.

Kenmore Air 75th anniversary bash

Monday, August 30, 2021

Story and photo by Cynthia Sheridan

Local bands, politicians, Northshore fire, several popular food vans - and, oh yes, float planes - gathered Saturday afternoon 11am to 3pm along the sunny shores of Lake Washington to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Kenmore Air.

Sea planes took off and landed throughout the event, ferrying sightseers all around the Puget Sound on pre-booked tours. Kenmore Air did a formation flyover.

The Lago Vista Social Club and Inglemoor High School band provided music and people danced in the sunlight.

Kenmore Air employees conducted free tours of the campus including a brief history of their seaplane operation.

A Kid Zone had a coloring table and ready to assembly Balsa airplanes - which were a big hit.

l-r (unidentified), Kenmore Air GM Todd Banks, 46th LD David Frockt, KC Councilmember Rod Dembowski, 46th LD Rep. Javier Valdez and Gerry Pollet

There were so many politicians present that the Kenmore City Council had to announce a potential quorum!

This fancy seaplane dropped in from their downtown Seattle Lake Union Seaport. The logo on the side is from King 5's Evening Magazine show.

The beer garden is always a hit. Food trucks included Dick's - who knew they had a food truck - Sweet Wheels ice cream, Vespucci wood-fired pizza, and Tacos el Guero.

The Kenmore waterfront has been home to Kenmore Air since its founding in 1946.
