Kenmore Town Square and Hangar Community Building grand opening Saturday

Friday, August 25, 2017

The Community is invited to attend the Grand Opening celebration for Town Square and Hangar community building in Kenmore, 6728 NE 181st St.

The new $4.5 million investment includes:
  • The 4,700 sq. ft. “Hangar” (named in keeping with Kenmore’s seaplane heritage) is Kenmore’s newest gathering place for casual get-togethers and events. It’s also a great spot for students to do homework and parents to enjoy a relaxing morning or afternoon. It features a double-sided fireplace, comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, computer charging stations and a robust audio visual system and a multi-purpose room that can be reserved.
  • The newest Diva Espresso café is located inside the Hangar where guests can enjoy coffee, tea, baked goods, beer, wine, sandwiches and more.
  • The Town Square is a 12,750 sq. ft. outdoor area surrounding the Hangar. Its features include seating, green space, a water feature, heated, bike racks and a maintenance station plus an electric bike charging station, and other amenities to surprise and delight residents and visitors.

Most of the funding for this project came from proceeds from the sale of the former Kenmore Village properties slated for redevelopment and a State grant secured by the State Legislature’s 46th District delegation.

This project is the latest in a series of downtown revitalization investments made in Kenmore, fulfilling the City’s economic development plan to make downtown Kenmore a walkable destination.

Kenmore Air Harbor fined for dangerous waste violations

Tuesday, August 1, 2017

Kenmore Air Harbor is between Bothell Way,
the Burke Gilman Trail and Lake Washington
Kenmore Air Harbor's aircraft maintenance facility on the Lake Washington waterfront faces a $25,000 state environmental penalty for dangerous waste violations.

The Washington Department of Ecology issued the fine to Kenmore Air Harbor, 6321 NE 175th St, after observing repeated violations in regular inspections since 2009.

The most recent violations were found during an inspection on Aug. 17, 2016.

The company maintains float planes at the facility.

“With Kenmore Air’s location right on the lake there’s very little room for error in managing dangerous wastes,” said Darin Rice, manager of Ecology’s Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction program.
“They’ve cooperated and made corrections after past inspections, but four of those violations have re-appeared at least twice in subsequent inspections.”

Ecology is fining the company for failing to determine whether its wastes should be designated as dangerous waste, properly label and close all its dangerous waste containers, and keep required records of dangerous waste shipments.

Washington’s dangerous waste law and regulations set standards to protect the public and the environment by preventing releases of potentially harmful waste materials at commercial and industrial facilities. Ecology inspects workplaces that generate dangerous wastes to ensure compliance with requirements for safe handling and storage.

“We immediately responded to Ecology’s August 2016 inspection report with changes to procedures and training that we believe will keep our Air Harbor facility in compliance,” said Todd Banks, Kenmore Air President.
“We’ve been committed to sustaining and nurturing the Pacific Northwest since our founding in 1946. Our business and employees genuinely care about a healthy environment. We intend to work collaboratively with Ecology to ensure that our operation continues to meet all required environmental standards.”

Ecology penalties may be appealed within 30 days to the Washington State Pollution Control Hearings Board. Kenmore Air has informed Ecology that the company intends to file such an appeal.

Waterfront Activities Day in Kenmore Saturday - kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, and dragon boats

Thursday, May 11, 2017

Ride canoes, kayaks and stand up paddleboards for Free from Noon to 4pm

Race 12.4-miles on Sammamish River from Redmond to Kenmore for prize money

Kenmore’s inaugural Waterfront Activities Day begins its maiden voyage Saturday, May 13.

The day-long community celebration shoves off at 10am with a 12.4-miles race of human-powered watercraft on the Sammamish River from Redmond to Kenmore’s Squire’s Landing Park where people of all ages will be gathered to enjoy FREE canoe, kayak and stand up paddleboard and dragon boat rides during the Waterfront Fair from noon to 4pm.

The Kenmore Waterfront Activities Center (KWAC) is the event organizer.

“Our access to the Sammamish River and Lake Washington make Kenmore a coveted destination for those who enjoy a day out on the water with family and friends,” said City Manager Rob Karlinsey, an avid canoeist.
“Last year’s successful Walkways and Waterways bond measure, the Lakepointe project and this year’s Waterfront Activities Day are some of the ways we’re leveraging our proximity to water to enhance the quality of life in Kenmore.”

Racers can begin to assemble at 9am on Saturday at Luke McRedmond Park located at 15811 Redmond Way in Redmond. Any type of human-powered watercraft can be used during the race. The race begins at 10am. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Pre-register for $30, or on race day for $40. All participants will receive a goody bag.

"People in Kenmore have a strong affinity for water-based recreation and leisure activities," said race organizer Sheri Baker, a KWAC board member. "By combining the race and fair we're able to bring together community around a shared passion, which helps to cultivate it."

The family-friendly waterfront fair starts at noon -- the same time race participants will begin arriving at Squires Landing Park, 7353 NE 175th Street. During the festivities attendees can try out canoes, kayaks, and standup paddleboards for free or learn about summer rowing and dragon boat programs available to youth and adults.

Other scheduled on-site activities include: food and beverage stations, raffles, local vendor booths, information about Kenmore’s boathouse and dock plans.

KWAC board member and fair organizer Debra Srebnik said she believes Kenmore’s “Waterfront Activities Day has the ability to become a very large, transformational event for Kenmore.”

KWAC is a volunteer-run non-profit formed in 2013 to promote a healthy, hand-powered watercraft culture in Kenmore by providing community access to sprint canoe and kayak training for youth, rowing and dragon boat practices for adults and youth. KWAC merged the race and waterfront fair after years of them each operating independently.

Presenting race sponsors are 9 Yards Brewing Company, Spencer 68 and LINQ. In-kind race sponsors are HodgePodge, Ostrom’s Drug and Gift, Great Clips of Kenmore and Redmond, Starbuck’s-Redmond, Jessica’s Unique Bites, Bastyr University, Daddy’s Donuts, Hyatt House, Ford of Kirkland and Super Supplements as well as the cities of Kenmore and Redmond.

Right: The 4,500 square foot Hangar building will open summer 2017.

The City of Kenmore and locally owned and operated coffee retailer Diva Espresso have signed a six-year lease to occupy 1,200 square feet of retail space inside the 4,500 square feet Hangar building at the 20,000 square feet Town Square in downtown Kenmore. Build out is expected to begin in April. The opening of the Diva Espresso Kenmore location is planned for late spring. It will be the company’s seventh non-franchised shop.

Diva Expresso will complete the living room ambiance that’s planned for the Hangar. Residents, visitors and employees from nearby businesses will soon have a new place to relax with a great cup of coffee, a tasty lunch or sweet treat while enjoying the beauty and serenity of Kenmore’s new Town Square.

“Signing this agreement with Diva Espresso is the latest in a series of significant steps we’ve taken over the last several years to move forward with the community’s vision for downtown Kenmore,” said Mayor David Baker. “Diva Espresso’s local brand is a great fit for our City’s newest hangout space. Their presence in the Hangar Building will help to shape the warm and inviting atmosphere we envision for the space.”

Anticipated to open in late Spring, Diva Espresso will operate seven days a week from 6am to 8pm Monday – Saturday and 7am to 6pm Sundays serving espresso and other coffee drinks, teas, and other beverages, such as smoothies and Italian sodas; baked goods, sandwiches and related food items; ice cream; and beer and wine for on-premises consumption.

“We are thrilled to expand the Diva family to the City of Kenmore! We are looking forward to helping the City build a strong and vibrant community,” said Diva Espresso Director of Operations Jessica Hamper.

In summer 2017, the highly anticipated Town Square and Hangar building will open to the community as a new destination in downtown Kenmore with a #WhyILoveKenmore grand opening event.

The Town Square and Hangar are part of a multi-million dollar public-private downtown investment that includes pedestrian improvements and street restriping for additional on-street parking; the LINQ Building’s 94 modern residential lofts and flats that opened in February; plans for a new sit-down restaurant; the Spencer 68 Apartments + Lofts completed in 2015 with the second phase constructed slated for completion in August 2017; and the relocation of Kenmore Camera in 2014.

These developments will bring more than 300 multi-family units to Kenmore’s downtown when complete. Learn more about Kenmore Village here.

Diva Espresso has been independently owned and operated since 1993 and now has six locations throughout Downtown and North Seattle. We believe noteworthy coffee only originates with a combination of moral and equitable relationships between grower, broker, roaster and consumer. In January 2017, Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, a non-profit organization that locates and propagates the world’s largest and most iconic trees, contacted the City of Kenmore to donate clones and offspring of Coast Redwood trees taken from multi-thousand-year-old trees.

The Archangel Ancient Tree Archive has produced and planted over 300,000 individual trees with a wide reach across seven countries. Increasing global climate awareness, the non-profit group has begun to garner attention, having several articles were written about their work as well as the production of an award-winning short film “Moving the Giants – An Urgent Plan to Save the Planet.”

City of Kenmore passes first bond measure in city history

Saturday, November 12, 2016

Nearly 20 million in safety and trail improvements now approved for bicyclists and walkers, along with improvements to waterfront.

The passage of Kenmore’s bond measure Proposition 1 Walkways and Waterways Improvements marks the first city bond measure ever on the ballot in the City of Kenmore, which was incorporated in 1998.

Proposition 1 Walkways and Waterways Improvements is a pedestrian and bicycle safety and waterfront park improvement bond measure that required 60 percent voter approval. As of the latest count, King County Elections results showed Proposition 1 passing with 64 percent voter approval.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for us to improve safety on a major roadway and also enhance waterfront access and the natural beauty at three of Kenmore’s parks, which is what residents have advocated for since incorporation,” said Mayor David Baker.

Through an extensive community input process known as “Imagine Kenmore,” Kenmore residents confirmed that safe routes for pedestrians and cyclists and connecting residents with the City’s public open space and waterfront are top priorities.

The five projects included in the bond measure reflect the results of the public input. Proposition 1 authorizes the City to issue up to $19.75 million in bonds to be repaid over a period of 20 years from the date of each bond series to pay for the following projects to be constructed over the next seven years:

  1. 68th Avenue Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
    1. New sidewalk and buffered bike lanes on 68th Avenue connecting downtown Kenmore at 182nd Street to the northern city limit.
  2. Juanita Drive Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
    1. New sidewalk and buffered bike lanes on Juanita Drive from the Kirkland city limit north to 170th Street / Simonds Road.
    2. Other improvements include adding or extending selected left turn lanes, and improving the curve at NE 155th Place.
  3. Log Boom Park Waterfront Access and Viewing
    1. Improve public access to Lake Washington including beach expansion, new trails and viewpoints, picnic areas, waterfront pavilion, environmental enhancements, and access for hand-powered watercraft.
  4. Rhododendron Park Waterfront and Natural Open Space Access
    1. Improve public access to the Sammamish River by constructing a new trail and boardwalk to connect the existing playfield through the natural open space to the riverfront and future dock.
    2. The project will also include improving the access drive and parking near the river, as well as environmental enhancements to the shoreline and wetlands.
  5. Squire’s Landing Park Waterfront and Natural Open Space Access
    1. Eleven acres of new park development to enhance public access to the Sammamish River.
    2. Natural open space restoration, trails, boardwalks, and viewing points will connect the park to the river and adjacent Burke-Gilman Trail along NE 175th Street.
    3. The project will also add new docks, parking and a restroom.

The City of Kenmore will host the annual Jack V. Crawford 'Courtesy is Contagious in Kenmore' Day park cleanup event on Saturday, October 22 in honor of Kenmore's first Mayor Jack V. Crawford.

Volunteers are needed to help with mulching, planting, weeding, and picking up trash from 9am to noon at Log Boom Park, 17415 61st Ave NE.

In 2009, City Council proclaimed October 22 'Courtesy is Contagious in Kenmore' Day as an annual observance in honor of Mr. Crawford, who passed away in December 2008. Mr. Crawford served on the Kenmore City Council from the City’s incorporation in August 1998 through December 2005. City of Kenmore expresses concern about chronic PSE power outages

Monday, September 26, 2016

The City of Kenmore has expressed its concerns about chronic electrical power outages in its neighborhoods.

What seems to be more than our share of outages has been an ongoing issue for many years, with the latest major outage on a warm, sunny day.

Puget Sound Energy (PSE), a for-profit corporation, is the electric utility provider for Kenmore as well as neighboring cities of Bothell, Kirkland, and Woodinville.

In recent years the City has taken steps to more aggressively push for improved electric reliability in Kenmore. As a result, PSE has proposed future capital projects in Kenmore that will presumably improve electric reliability in some parts of the city.

PSE’s proposed improvements are a step in the right direction; however, we are not convinced that they are enough to address Kenmore’s ongoing reliability problems. We have data that shows that eight of Kenmore’s 10 neighborhood circuits are performing below PSE’s average for reliability.

The City of Kenmore says that it has and will continue to voice concerns about electric power reliability to PSE, and citizens and businesses are encouraged to do the same. You can do so by calling PSE at 425-424-6446 or by emailing PSE at RaeLynn.Asah@pse.com.

In addition, PSE customers can also contact the Utilities and Trade Commission to voice their concerns. Fill out the Online Complaint Form,  or call toll-free 1-888-333-WUTC (9882).
