Apartment Fire in Kenmore Friday morning

Friday, August 16, 2013

The Northshore Fire Department was dispatched at 6:36 am on Friday, August 16, 2013 to a fire at an apartment complex on 73 Avenue NE in Kenmore. The fire began in a corner apartment on the 3rd floor. The one adult, one teenager and three children evacuated and several neighbors reported to 911 that they saw smoke and flames from the back of the building.

The firefighters arrived and found flames and heavy smoke coming from the single unit on the 3rd floor. A second alarm was quickly activated and the first arriving units were able to contain the fire damage to the bedroom of the affected apartment. There was smoke damage throughout the rest of the apartment and some water damage to floors below. Estimated damage from the fire, smoke and water is $80,000. The Northshore firefighters were assisted by personnel from Bothell, Shoreline, Kirkland and Woodinville Fire Departments.

A King County Fire Investigator determined the cause to be accidental and there were no firefighter injuries. Other tenants from the apartment complex reported seeing a teenager with minor injuries but that he had departed the scene.

Off the beaten track in Kenmore: Living Room Consignment and Tea store

Off the beaten track in Kenmore:
Living Room Consignment and Tea

This is the first in a series of articles about Kenmore businesses. If you go off the beaten track (read: SR 522) in Kenmore, there are many small, one-of-a-kind businesses that you might miss. The first of these is the Living Room Consignment and Tea store at 6524 NE 181st St, Suite 10, Kenmore 98028.

Owner Katie Christine Rhodes

Located in Kenmore Village, this shop has been open since 2009, and is just entering its 5th year as of August 1, 2013. The owner/operator is Katie Christine Rhodes (no relation). She was a licensed massage therapist prior to owning this shop. She maintains an interest in aromatherapy, and has some products available for sale.

How to describe the Living Room Consignment and Tea shop? Well, it is packed full of unique and interesting items, most of which are in excellent condition. Some might qualify as “antiques” (but I’m no expert on this). Katie researches her older items to correctly identify them and find out some of their history. Most of the items are furniture, but there are also books, dishes, lamps, paintings and prints, artwork, jewelry and more.

Katie has pop-up random sales from time to time –  if you go to the website, you can contact her about getting on the mailing list to get updates on eBay or craigslist sales. She also has a Facebook page (thelivingroom98028 if you want to “like” it). I see a French Baroque mirror there right now, that she has listed on eBay.

The atmosphere in this shop is very tranquil, even though it is full to the brim with merchandise.  As I was there, several people wandered through to purchase or drop off items. One woman described the atmosphere as her personal “blood pressure medication” – there is no pressure to buy, and you can wander the aisles at any pace you prefer. There’s a lot to see!

Tea and snacks for donation

Finally, if you all you want is a cup of tea, you can have that for a donation. There are also chocolates and small snacks for sale. I had the green chai. Katie told me that the bag could be used for a second brewing and it would still be flavorful. She was right!

So, check it out – go off the beaten path in Kenmore!  You might be surprised at what you find.

First Lady celebrates Kenmore's efforts to complete health and wellness goals

Monday, July 15, 2013

Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama hosted Kenmore Mayor David Baker at the White House, celebrating the outstanding efforts of Kenmore and other communities to complete health and wellness goals over the past year for Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC). LMCTC calls upon local elected officials to adopt sustainable and holistic strategies that improve access to healthy, affordable food and opportunities for physical activity.

Since joining LMCTC, Kenmore’s Let’s Move! efforts include providing more opportunities for children to play outdoors in parks and working with the Northshore School District to ensure children have healthy food options in the schools' breakfast and lunch programs.

“The League of Cities appreciates the support and energy of the First Lady for her tireless efforts to reduce the obesity epidemic facing our communities,” said National League of Cities’ Executive Director, Clarence Anthony. He continued, “We congratulate all the local elected officials who participated in the event and are playing an instrumental role in providing our nation’s children with a healthier future. When children grow up in cities, towns and counties that promote healthy development, they become productive and healthy adults, contributing to the prosperity of our communities.”

LMCTC is a major component of First Lady Michelle Obama’s comprehensive Let’s Move! initiative, which is dedicated to solving the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. A total of 330 cities, towns and counties from 46 states and the District of Columbia, which collectively represent more than 56 million Americans, have committed to the initiative’s five goals. NLC has awarded more than 1,000 bronze, silver and gold “medals” to recognize local elected officials who have made progress in achieving these goals.

As part of LMCTC, local elected officials are working towards the following goals:
  • Goal I: Start Early, Start Smart: Promoting best practices for nutrition, physical activity, and screen time in early care and education settings
  • Goal II: My Plate, Your Place: Prominently displaying MyPlate in all municipal or county venues where food is served
  • Goal III: Smart Servings for Students: Increasing participation in school breakfast and lunch programs
  • Goal IV: Model Food Service: Implementing healthy and sustainable food service guidelines that are aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans
  • Goal V: Active Kids at Play: Increasing opportunities for physical activity
NLC is working in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and with the support of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Association of Counties and other nonprofit organizations, to assist local elected officials who join LMCTC as they implement policy and environmental changes to prevent childhood obesity.  The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has awarded NLC a grant to provide technical assistance to local elected officials working to create healthier communities and prevent childhood obesity, including sites participating in LMCTC.

Mayor David Baker is on the Board of Directors for the National League of Cities. While in Washington, D.C., Mayor Baker also worked to further Kenmore’s federal legislative priorities, including transportation funding, and funding for dredging the Kenmore Navigation Channel.

For more information about LMCTC and City of Kenmore’s accomplishments, visit Healthy Cities.

The National League of Cities is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.

Kenmore City Council expected to approve MainStreet Property Group LLC as buyer for Kenmore Village Upper Parcel

Saturday, July 6, 2013

Kenmore City Manager
Rob Karlinsky
recommends property sale

Purchase and Sale Agreement will be considered at the July 8 City Council meeting

Next week, the City of Kenmore City Council is expected to approve a Purchase and Sale Agreement (PSA) for the 4.75 acre upper parcel of Kenmore Village, formerly the King County Park / Ride. On July 8, during the City Council meeting, City Manager Rob Karlinsey will recommend MainStreet Property Group LLC (MainStreet) as the buyer for a $3.6 million purchase price.

The property is part of the redevelopment of the downtown. Kenmore Village, as it is known, is a commercial and residential area at the northwest corner of 68th Avenue and 181st Street, across from the Kenmore City Hall. MainStreet is the recommended buyer based on the company’s offer price, experience, financial wherewithal, implementation capability, and alignment with the City’s goals and position statement for the property. The deal will close when the building permit is issued.

“Real estate investors are bullish on Kenmore,” said Karlinsey. “We are at the forefront of new development with excellent partners like MainStreet.”

MainStreet expects to develop and build in excess of 160 units of quality multifamily apartments in downtown Kenmore, a portion of which will be affordable housing. Construction is expected to begin as soon as summer 2014.

The City purchased the property in 2005 for $2,525,000. It is currently an interim location for a skate park and layover point for two King County Metro bus routes. According to Karlinsey, the City is evaluating options for a new skate park site and will have the above-ground skate ramps relocated. King County Metro is planning to move the layover locations for the two bus lines to the Kenmore Park / Ride near 73rd Avenue and Bothell Way.

Last month, the City Council approved a PSA for the sale of the lower parcel of Kenmore Village. Benaroya Company and Real Property Investors are the approved purchasers for the commercial property next door to the parcel MainStreet is expected to purchase.

The two Kenmore Village projects combined will include the construction of retail and office space, high density residential units and a public gathering space. The city anticipates the potential for $25 million in new investment to the downtown area.

City of Kenmore expected to approve buyers for Kenmore Village properties

Monday, June 10, 2013

The City of Kenmore is announcing the buyers for the Kenmore Village properties in the developing downtown commercial area.

Benaroya Company and Real Property Investors (RPI) are the anticipated buyers of the 3.3 acre Kenmore Village lower parcel. MainStreet Property Group LLC is the expected buyer of the upper lot, formerly the King County Park / Ride.

Benaroya Company and Real Property Investors (RPI) purchase is expected to be approved by the Kenmore City Council at a meeting on June 10. The MainStreet agreement will be ready for City Council consideration at the July 8, 2013 City Council meeting.

The new construction will include retail, office, high density residential, and a high quality, signature public gathering space. The City will likely see more than $8.2 million in direct economic value from the sale and development of these properties, including the Kenmore Camera expansion location.

Kenmore Camera will be moving to the new site and plans to triple in size. As reported in the Puget Sound Business Journal

The new location is 17,000 square feet, more than three times the size of its current location. Kenmore Camera will occupy the space by early fall. Kenmore Camera’s new store will have two classrooms, a customer lounge, retail space and custom lighting displays.

New traffic signal activated at 61st Avenue NE and NE 181st Street

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

A new traffic signal at the intersection of 61st Avenue NE and NE 181st Street in Kenmore is now in operation and all lanes are open. This safety improvement project included the traffic signal, roadway widening, illumination and placing utilities underground.

A second project was completed in this intersection during this timeframe. Culverts carrying a stream along 61st Avenue NE and underneath NE 181st Street had to be replaced. The new culvert provides additional conveyance capacity, removes fish barriers, and improves fish habitat.

Construction of these improvements began in August 2012. The projects were constructed by Razz Construction out of Bellingham, Washington. The traffic signal was partially funded by a $650,000 appropriation from the State Legislature.

Kenmore City Council to review multiple offers for Kenmore Village Properties at February 25 meeting

Friday, February 22, 2013

The City of Kenmore has received multiple offers for the upper (former King County Park and Ride) and lower commercial properties at Kenmore Village. At the February 25 City Council meeting, the City Manager and Kenmore Village brokers will review the process and provide a recommendation for the top several proposals to move forward in the process. Citizens are encouraged to attend the meeting and provide feedback during the public comment portion of the discussion.

In 2012, the City of Kenmore retained two brokerage firms to list the Kenmore Village properties for sale. Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) listed the upper lot and Colliers International listed the lower lots. Prior to being listed for sale, the City led an extensive public involvement process to reconfirm the goals for the downtown, develop a Position Statement for the properties, and create a strategy to take the properties to market.

Multiple proposals were received on both the upper and lower properties. Colliers, JLL, City staff, and Spinnaker Strategies recently interviewed potential buyers for the properties. Based on the goals for the properties and the principles outlined in the Position Statement, four potential buyers for each of the properties are recommended to move forward in the process.

In keeping with the next steps outlined in fall 2012, the City should narrow down the finalists to one for each property in the near future with the anticipation of approving agreements for the properties in spring 2013.

The potential buyer summaries, position statement, and downtown goals are available in the February 25 City Council meeting agenda on the City’s website. More information on Kenmore Village.

John McMaster names the Village of Kenmore on January 10, 1901.

Thursday, January 3, 2013

Courtesy Phyllis McMaster Failor
and HistoryLink

On January 10, 1901, mill owner John McMaster names the village of Kenmore in honor of his previous home of Kenmore, Ontario. McMaster also serves as the community's first postmaster. Kenmore is located in King County 12 miles north of Seattle and 2.5 miles west of Bothell at the north end of Lake Washington.

John McMaster moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1889, and was a prominent shingle mill operator in Snohomish and Kitsap counties before establishing the McMaster Shingle Mill in Kenmore in 1901. In 1903, he became Kenmore's first postmaster, with the opening of the first post office, which delivered mail from the company store of his sawmill.

McMaster chose the name Kenmore in honor of his earlier home in Kenmore, Ontario. Kenmore, Ontario, was in turn named for the town of Kenmore, Scotland, and a century later the village still honors its Scottish roots with an annual Founders' Day celebration, held on January 10.
