On Wednesday, March 27, 2019, Shoreline Community College graduated its second class of service technicians for the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla.

The class is a collaboration between the college and Tesla, which provides vehicles, tools, and instruction materials - and hires the graduates at service centers across North America.

It's a new approach to vocational job training. Instead of sending students through a generalized class, this course trains specifically for Tesla.

The college has three other highly successful automotive programs each specializing in a specific make of vehicle.

And what is the advantage for Tesla?

According to Martti Thomas, Operations and Implementation Manager for Tesla START,

“Tesla is working with some of the best automotive education programs in the country — like Shoreline Community College — to educate students on electric vehicle technology and our unique approach to customer service to prepare them for a career at Tesla.
"Shoreline Community College is one of the North West’s top automotive tech schools and offers a wide range of different automotive manufacturing programs.
"Students graduate with a full time job, certification and the skills necessary to succeed in the growing electric vehicle industry."

Last year's inaugural class of 10 students, also under instructor Luke Thompson, completed an intensive 12-week training and were quickly employed by Tesla service centers. About half of them found employment in the Puget Sound area and the rest went to dealerships in other states.

This year Shoreline CC graduated a new class of ten students, all with Tesla certifications.

Cheryl Roberts, President of Shoreline Community College said “These students have bright futures ahead of them in the fast-paced electric vehicle industry and Shoreline Community College is so pleased to pioneer this training in Washington state.”

10 hard-working students will celebrate the completion of their Tesla START service technician training at Shoreline Community College with a special ceremony on Thursday, December 6 from 4:00 - 5:30pm.

“We are thrilled to have the very first cohort of students complete their Tesla training at Shoreline,” said Cheryl Roberts, President of Shoreline Community College.
“These students have bright futures ahead of them in the fast-paced electric vehicle industry and Shoreline Community College is so pleased to pioneer this training in Washington state.”

Shoreline is just one of five community colleges in the nation to offer the program from electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla. The inaugural class completed an intensive 12-week technical training that provides them with the skills necessary for job placement as service technicians at Tesla service centers across North America.

Tesla said in a statement, “Tesla is currently working with colleges that have strong automotive programs to help attract and train students who are passionate about our mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
"The program recently introduced at Shoreline Community College will help students learn about electric vehicles and sustainable energy and be prepared to start their career on Day 1. As Tesla grows across the United States, it is important that we invest in our community and build a strong pipeline of local talent excited by our mission.”

The public is invited to attend the Tesla Inaugural Graduation and Ribbon-Cutting Celebration on December 6 from 4:00 - 5:30pm. held on Shoreline’s campus. Photo by Steven H. Robinson

Beginning Fall 2018, Shoreline Community College will offer a training program from electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla. The intensive 12-week technical training program, Tesla START, provides students with the skills necessary for job placement as Service Technicians at Tesla service centers across North America. Students will develop technical expertise and earn certifications through a blended approach of in-class theory, hands-on labs, and self-paced learning.

Shoreline is currently just one of four community colleges in the United States that offers the program.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Tesla to provide this exciting new opportunity to our students,” said Guy Hamilton, Acting Vice President for Student Learning.
“Tesla is leading the charge toward all-electric systems and greater sustainability in the automotive industry, and this program will allow our students to be on the forefront of this cutting-edge technology and the job opportunities it presents.”

Tesla provides the curriculum and instructors and works with students to provide job placement at a Tesla service center upon successful completion. With 76 Tesla service centers across the country and Tesla’s rapidly-expanding revolutionary Mobile Service program, Tesla START is designed to prepare students for a smooth transition from hands-on learning to full-time employment. Students will benefit from job-specific training, a chance to earn certifications while they learn, a job opportunity pipeline, and a foothold in the future of the automotive industry.

“Shoreline is already well-known for the quality of our automotive programs,” said Hamilton. “This new partnership with Tesla strengthens our reputation of producing workforce-ready graduates and gives students one more stellar option for their career trajectories.”

Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy through all-electric vehicles and infinitely scalable clean energy generation and storage products. Tesla believes the faster the world stops relying on fossil fuels and moves towards a zero-emission future, the better.

Ready to get started? Apply for the Tesla START program at Shoreline. The ideal candidate for the program is a graduate or soon-to-be graduate of a certified automotive education program with an interest in working on electric vehicles. For questions about the Tesla START program, email.

Founded in 1964, Shoreline Community College offers more than 100 rigorous academic and professional/technical programs to meet the lifelong learning needs of its community.

Saturday, January 28, 2017

MOPAR CAP
Shoreline Community College MOPAR CAP (Motor Parts Career Automotive Program) students will take their learning to the next level thanks to a generous donation from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).

The FCA donation included 21 pallets of the latest automotive technology, such as engines, transmissions, transaxles, and axles.

The donated components help give Shoreline’s students a leg up in the industry, as the components are the same caliber as what students will encounter during their cooperative learning experience in the dealerships and well into their careers as automotive technicians.

“Part of the uniqueness of our program is the relationship we have with auto manufacturers,” said Michael Boehm, Director of Dealer Services and Manufacturer Relations for Shoreline’s Professional Automotive Training Center – Dealer Training Academy.
“Our industry partners recognize that we educate and train some of the top automotive workers graduating today, and their donations ensure that we are able to maintain that high level of training and provide them with the top notch talent they need.”

The FCA donation allows students to stay up to date with emerging vehicle technology, diagnostic equipment, and service information from one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, further ensuring their employment and earning potential out of the program.

The MOPAR CAP program at Shoreline is a two-year, Associate in Applied Arts and Sciences (AAAS) degree that includes rotations between class time and on-site training at sponsoring Chrysler Group dealerships under the direction of a master technician.

Openings for ICHS Nurse Practitioner Residency Program

Sunday, January 25, 2015

DoQuyen Huynh, DNP-FNP, (right) ICHS ARNP Residency Program Administrator, conducts a briefing on clinical work assignments and issues with program residents (from left) Jean Baumgardner, Kimberly Lee-Cooper, Megan Wilbert (in blue sweater), and the program's deputy administrator, Chris Yee, M.D.

Newly graduated Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) may receive health care training in a unique community health setting through the International Community Health Services (ICHS) Family Nurse Practitioner Residency Program.

Applications for the program are now being accepted through April 1.

ICHS ARNP Residency Program Administrator DoQuyen Huynh, DNP-FNP, said the program, now in its second year, offers a valuable training opportunity for nurse practitioners, especially those who want to work in community health settings, to serve traditionally underserved populations.

"ICHS has a very unique population. We serve many new immigrants, refugees, low-income, and other patients who often fall through the cracks due to health care access barriers," Dr. Huynh said.
"Nurse practitioners who want to work with these populations tend to be very passionate about what they do. However, unless they receive training in this kind of setting, they are often overwhelmed with the population complexity, or burn out quickly. What we do is we take their passion to the next level, to better prepare them for a career in community health."

Competitive candidates will be accepted to a one-year salaried intensive education program, focused on family practice with specialty clinical rotations. The residency is open to recent graduates of accredited nurse practitioner programs in the United States.

More information about the ICHS Family Nurse Practitioner Residency Program and an application form here.

Another Goodwill success story: Liba Meatchi from Togo

Saturday, December 22, 2012

By Katherine Boury

When Liba Meatchi came to Goodwill he was frustrated by not being able to find a good job to support his family. Originally from Togo, he lived in Italy for over ten years playing professional basketball. “I came to America because I wanted to give my daughter a better life,” Liba remembered.

Liba Meatchi learned English at Shoreline Goodwill

After he arrived in Seattle he found his lack of English skills a barrier to finding a good job. After taking classes at Shoreline Goodwill to improve his English and job search skills, he was able to acquire a good job with the Seattle Public Schools at Highland Park Elementary.

“Goodwill is a good place,” Liba said. “It helped me to have everything I have now.”

This past year Seattle Goodwill assisted almost 6,300 students with free job training and education in our 10 community job training centers, helping 700 people facing barriers to employment find jobs.

Goodwill students come from diverse backgrounds. Last year, our students represented 102 native languages and 113 countries of origin.

Boeing grant helps low-skilled adults train for manufacturing careers

Monday, November 19, 2012

SkillUp Washington, a Seattle-based organization that supports workforce development training, has been awarded a $750,000 from Boeing to help low-skilled adults launch manufacturing careers.

The 3-year grant called Manufacturing Advancement Pathways Project (MAPP) will help students in four area community colleges (Shoreline, Renton Tech, South Seattle and Everett) complete training and find employment with area manufacturers.

“We are extremely grateful for Boeing’s dynamic investment,” said Susan Crane, SkillUp’s Executive Director. “This grant will lead to deeper and broader relationships between colleges and manufacturers. This will ensure students get the training they need for successful manufacturing careers and employers have a well-trained pool or workers.”

According to Snohomish County Workforce Development Council data, the aerospace industry is expected to create more than 21,000 aerospace jobs in Washington state.

Under the grant, local workforce training and education organizations will identify common strategies that will help them work together and keep the sector strong; students will receive educational and community supports that will help them stay in school, and college partners will hire manufacturing Navigators who will play a pivotal role in developing connections between students and employers and help students reach their educational goals.

Special focus will be on helping military veterans and women enter manufacturing training programs.

“SkillUp is uniquely positioned to lead the MAPP,” said Crane. “We play a weaver role in connecting low-income students, colleges and employers and in ensuring that mutually reinforcing strategies exist to inform and support the design, quality and productivity of these relationships.”

Other SkillUp grant partners include the Manufacturing Industrial Council, City of Seattle (Pathways to Careers initiative), Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC), Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Employment for Women (ANEW) and Workforce Development Councils in King and Snohomish Counties.
