Toyota T-Ten Program at Shoreline Community College wins national award

Saturday, May 28, 2011

For the fifth year in a row, the Toyota T-TEN Program at Shoreline Community College has received the T-TEN School Recognition Award from Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. The award is given to the highest performing T-TEN schools located at colleges across the country.

Matt Spitzer, Toyota T-TEN instructor at Shoreline, says there are 53 schools across the country that offer the Toyota program. Each year, about five programs across the country receive the T-TEN School Recognition Award.

Shoreline’s program was selected for its excellent implementation of the national training model, including placement of students at Toyota dealerships, meeting graduate objectives, maintenance of instructor and program certifications and compliance with Toyota training requirements.

The award was presented by Rick Lester, Technician Development Manager – Toyota, at the Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 in the college’s Board Room.

The Toyota T-TEN program was started nationally in 1986; Shoreline started its program in 1987. Shoreline Community College works with 15 Toyota and Lexus dealerships across Puget Sound. A total of 145 people have received Toyota certification through Shoreline’s program in 21 years.

Graduation at Goodwill Shoreline Training Center

Thursday, October 7, 2010

Goodwill graduating class, staff, and dignitaries.  Photo by Steven H. Robinson.
There was a graduation in Shoreline on September 30. It was not a June graduation and it was not at any of the high schools, community college, or private schools. A class of 13 students graduated from the Retail and Customer Service Training Program at the Shoreline Goodwill located at NE 145th and 15th NE.

The program gives participants the specific skills and training to find and keep a job in the retail sector. The participants themselves were disadvantaged, with significant barriers to economic opportunity.

But after eight weeks of class time and a two-week Goodwill internship, these graduates are ready to take advantage of the job placement services provided by Goodwill and find jobs.
Mayor Keith McGlashan congratulates Abonesh Mengistu, while Instructor William Ayears looks on.
Certificates were awarded by Mayor Keith McGlashan, who said, "I was honored to be asked to speak to the Goodwill retail graduating class.  They were individuals from all walks of life and challenging situations, and yet they found the strength within themselves to enroll in the class to better themselves."

Goodwill offers support and follow-up services for a year.

The training programs are free, supported by proceeds from Goodwill store sales, generous grants from corporations, businesses and foundations, and financial gifts from individuals. In addition, Goodwill offers participants a monthly stipend as they progress in the program.

Shoreline Goodwill student wins scholarship award

Wednesday, June 9, 2010

By David Sandler

Roseanne Trinidad (photo), a graduate of Shoreline Goodwill’s Retail and Customer Service Training Program, accepted an H. Martin Smith Jr. Scholarship Award at Goodwill’s Appreciation Breakfast on June 8 at Benaroya Hall.

When she arrived in the United States from the Philippines, her inability to speak English confidently made it difficult to find work. The Retail and Customer Service Training Program at Shoreline Goodwill helped her become more outgoing while learning valuable jobs skills. Now she works two jobs to support herself here and help her four siblings in the Philippines, all while taking classes at Shoreline Community College. Roseanne’s goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree and get a job in the medical field.

“I’m just a simple person who dreams about finishing school and lifting up my family from poverty,” she says. “I believe that when I finish my studies, I will have a better future, because education is the key to success.”

“We are proud of everything that Roseanne has achieved since coming to this country. This scholarship will help her continue on the path to getting a college education and a good job so she can have a better future,” said Barbara Nabors-Glass, Vice President of Job Training and Education.

The scholarship program was established in 2003 to honor the memory of H. Martin Smith Jr., a long-time member of the Goodwill Board of Directors who was instrumental in raising the profile of Goodwill in the community. He also worked to expand the programs in order to help more people.

Ribbon-cutting on expansion of SCC automotive training center

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

By Jim Hills

Ribbon-cuttings are usually ceremonies to launch the work that has already been done.

On Tuesday, June 8, Shoreline Community College drew about 400 people to a ribbon-cutting that did the usual, inaugurating a $4.2 million expansion of the Professional Automotive Training Center, and then it did more, much more.

“I’m here to announce Phase 3,” said Pam Nelson, President of the Puget Sound Auto Dealers Association and owner of Foothills Toyota Scion in Burlington, Wash. “In this technological automotive world, education is critical in maintaining the sophisticated transportation systems we now drive.

“So, in partnership with Shoreline Community College, we will expand once more. More international automakers will join us at this facility and hundreds more young people will have the opportunity for excellent high pay, high growth sustainable automotive jobs.”

Nelson, a third-generation auto dealer, said the college training center is a “partnership between auto dealers and automakers that creates jobs, improves lives and does it efficiently and economically.”

Nelson’s announcement was made possible after a recent PSADA Foundation meeting during which board members voted to spearhead the fund-raising efforts for the next expansion of the training center. At this point, no further details have been announced about the drive.

The current expansion added 26,000 square feet to the original 32,000-square-foot center that opened in 1992. While it nearly doubled the size, the expanded center is already full with new industry partners and previous partners now offering more training and education. Current training center industry partners include: Toyota, Honda, GM, Chrysler, Volvo, Hyundai, Snap-on, Hunter Engineering with full-time presences and others such as Subaru, Kia, Volkswagen and Raytheon also using the center.

The Tuesday ceremony was emceed by SCC President Lee Lambert. Speakers included:

  •  State Rep. Maralyn Chase, D-32nd Dist
  •  Bill Bergen, Toyota University
  •  Vicki Giles Fabre, Washington Auto Dealers Association
  •  Pam Nelson, PSADA Foundation and Foothills Toyota Scion
  •  Frederick Brookhouse, Snap-on Industrial
  •  Frank Ferrara, Hyundai of America
  •  Paul Svenkerud, Honda of Seattle

Grand opening of expanded professional automotive training center at SCC Tuesday, June 8

Thursday, June 3, 2010

By Donna Myers

Already tops in the country, the automotive technician training program at Shoreline Community College is about to get bigger and better.

On June 8, college, state and industry officials will be on hand as students cut the ribbon for the just-completed $4.2 million expansion of the Professional Automotive Training Center.  More than just a capital project at a community college, the expanded center represents a confluence that has considerable economic impact to individuals, companies and the state.

Starting at 2 pm in the training center, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Shoreline 98133, the program is open to the public. In addition to presentations and the ribbon-cutting, the latest vehicles and automotive technology will be on display with guided tours of the facility.

“This program is all about good jobs for our students and good employees for the automobile dealers,” said Don Schultz, program director. “This is a partnership where everybody wins.”

The expansion project itself was a partnership. Of the total cost, $2 million came from the state of Washington, with the rest from automotive-industry sources, including $1 million from Toyota USA and more than $1 million from members of the Puget Sound Automobile Dealers Association (PSADA).

“The dealers support this program because it works,” said Jim Hammond, executive director of PSADA. “It has the best instructors in the country, in the best facility and it turns out the best students.”

Starting in 1978 with classes on emissions control, the foundations from Shoreline and PSADA worked together to fund and build the original center, which opened in 1992. The center now educates about 120 students a year and provides skill-upgrade training for anywhere from 6,000 to 10,000 currently employed workers a year. Student-program partners include Toyota, Honda, GM and Chrysler. For current-worker training, the list includes those four, plus Hyundai, Volvo, Subaru, Nissan, Snap-on Tools, Hunter Engineering and PSADA-sponsored classes.

“There’s nothing like Shoreline in the country,” said Jack Carroll, owner of Jack Carroll Automotive, in Lynnwood, Wash.

Brad Miller, owner of Toyota and Honda dealerships in the Seattle area, said, “In my estimation, (the program) is an example of government/private enterprise and partnership at its finest.”

The expansion adds 26,000 square feet to the existing 32,000-square-foot center. The additional space allows for a corporate center for Toyota, and dedicated training spaces with vehicle lifts and classrooms for Hyundai, Volvo, Hunter, Snap-on and others. Schultz said that Snap-on is creating a “Center for Innovation” in its space.

“Snap-on has been a great partner. They donated hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of tools and tool benches,” Schultz said. “Now, with the Snap-on Center for Innovation, Shoreline will become a center for training and technology for the next generation.”

Schultz said that PEMCO Insurance Company is another key supporter of the center. “Stanley O. McNaughton, Jr., then-CEO was instrumental and Stan McNaughton, III, and his foundation board have continued that support,” Schultz said.

Shoreline Community College’s CNC Basic Machining Program makes the “A” Team

Saturday, April 24, 2010

Shoreline Community College’s CNC Machinist program gets a 4.0 with its recent accreditation by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).

“Getting this accreditation is really good news for our students,” said SCC’s CNC instructor Keith Smith. “With industry using the credentials to recruit, hire and promote machinists, and with few other programs in the state providing the NIMS stamp of approval, Shoreline students are ahead of the game.“

College officials and Smith, who has been at Shoreline for five years and worked as a machinist for 22, decided several years ago to pursue NIMS accreditation for the CNC program. Although students were receiving excellent training and education at Shoreline, Smith said he knew that the accreditation would provide nationally recognized skill sets that would set them apart in the job market.

The CNC Machinist program is involved with a number of innovative programs. The NIMS accreditation effort was already underway when the program received a grant that helped it expand the number of student slots. That grant is administered by the National Association of Manufacturers. The money also adds support for the students both in class and out on the job market.

The CNC Machinist training is also one of Shoreline’s designated Integrated Basic Education Skills Training (I-BEST) programs. I-BEST also adds in-class support for students needing help with English and basic education such as math and reading.

“It is wonderful getting these students into jobs that provide salaries that can support families,” David Cunningham, Dean of Workforce Education, said.

Smith said the I-BEST designation is a real asset to students. Now, students who need help with English and math can enter the program and get the one-on-one help they need with basic skills from one instructor and their machinist training from Smith.

“Before this was an I-BEST program, I was too busy in the classroom to find the time I needed to help one-on-one in the shop as often as I’d like,” Smith said. “Now we’ve got Chris (Lindberg) to help the students with their basic skills, freeing up time for me to work in the shop with students. It’s a win-win situation.”

Susan Hoyne, Dean of Science, Mathematics and Manufacturing points out that the NIMS credentials could also help when the college lobbies for state funding. “We are asking for help supporting a population that really needs help at the same time we are asking for dollars to support our local economy – and they (local business) have already let us know they want our students,” Hoyne said.

“It’s pretty obvious that our program and our instructors are respected across the board,” said Cunningham, referring to the positive comments by employers. “They really are impressed with our grads who work at their shops.”

Although students can earn a Certificate in Basic Manufacturing in just one quarter and move immediately into an entry-level job, Smith said the majority of students complete the CNC Machinist or the CNC Technology program, a three-quarter commitment.
