Friday Roundtable: The Interview - Dressing for Success and the Most Important Interview Question of All

Monday, April 11, 2016

Many thanks to Ann Conklin, whose story of success in her pet walking / sitting business was quite inspirational. It took a little failure and a lot of perseverance, but she’s now on track to solidifying her dream of being her own boss and making the money she needs to keep going. Congrats, and thanks, Ann!

This Friday’s Roundtable: The Interview: Dressing for Success and the Most Important Interview Question of All. Friday, April 15, 1-2:30pm.

All job interview questions ultimately boil down to this one: “Why should we hire you?” For some, this is a tough question to answer. You don’t want to come across as bragging or conceited, yet you need to explain why they should hire you over the other presumably qualified candidates.

You can answer this in a positive way that sets you apart and tells them why they need you. We’ll also touch on “Dressing for Success,” with some info that might be surprising. I wanted to include this topic last week, but time did not allow.

Please come share your ideas and experiences with these topics! All this with the usual great coffee and snacks, compliments of Central Market. Hope to see you!

And ask always – Good Luck Out There!

Friday Roundtable: Start a home-based business

Tuesday, April 5, 2016

This Friday's roundtable: Start a home-based business - featured guest: Annie's Walk and Talk Founder, Ann Conklin.
Friday April 8, 1:00pm - 2:30pm
“After attending several of Ron’s Roundtable sessions, I met Tiffany Mcveety, who was a guest speaker and teaches entrepreneurship at SSC. My sister and I spent nine months on a novel idea and took all of the steps necessary to start a business and a full-fledged business plan. Though I shelved the idea in October of 2014, the process enabled me to start Annie's Walk and Talk that December. Simply dog walking and pet sitting. I knew I needed another stream of income that was dog oriented and something of consequence that I believed in. In March of 2015, I found the perfect company to help fulfill my wishes. Using a direct sales model, PawTree offers a customized nutrition program that utilizes an algorithm to identify the best food/dry kibble and supplements for your dog’s needs.”  -Ann Conklin

Not too long ago, Ann told me she sometimes has more business than she can handle and has in the process networked for other great ideas.

Come by and hear her success and even the failure or two that lead up to her awesome idea.

Also, I have something current on the psychological and practical angles of “dressing for success” – probably not what you think.

As always, strong coffee and sweet treats play a part in this, compliments of Central Market.

Friday Round Table: Job Search & Preparation that No One is Talking About

Wednesday, March 23, 2016

This Friday’s Roundtable: Job Search and Preparation that No One is Talking About

How many times have we read job posting “KSAs” (Knowledge, Strengths, Abilities recommendations for applicants), then grew excited about how the bulleted items were all matching up to our abilities and expertise. . . And then – Boom – the last one or two listed are not within our skill range, and we pass on applying.

Not a lot of applicants know that they can still get positions without aligning to every detail of what’s asked in the job description. We’ll talk about some of these strategies along with some info on our revamped Word and Excel courses. All this along with the usual great coffee and treats from Central Market.

See you Friday – and as always, Good Luck Out There!

Friday Round Table: Get placed through Accountemps

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

This Friday’s (3/11) Roundtable: Get Placed through Accountemps!

Are you ready to get a paycheck? Is it a temporary job you have in mind – that is, just something to make do until the dream job arrives -- or is it something more permanent in an office setting? Either way, if you stop by Roundtable this Friday, your chances of becoming employed very soon will increase dramatically. Below is an excerpt from a very nice card I once received from Roundtable participant, Kathy Tiedman:

“My contact with your speaker from Accountemps facilitated contact with a recruiter at Robert Half and ultimately led to my placement in a long term, temporary position.”

Kathy went on to say that the experience boosted her confidence and has added some attractive caché to her resume. And wouldn’t you know it, Elizabeth Goodnow from Accountemps / Robert Half Agency is our featured guest for this Friday!

Please come by, bring your resume and business card, and arrange for a one-on-one with Elizabeth. She and the folks at Accountemps have been awesome over the past couple years and have landed many Roundtablers much needed employment.

We’ll of course have coffee and treats on hand, compliments of Central Market. Have a friend or family member looking for work? Please bring them along.

See you this Friday – and as always, Good Luck Out There!

Friday Roundtable: Soft Skills

Tuesday, February 9, 2016

This Friday’s Roundtable: Soft Skills, with Ed Cruver
Friday, February 12, 1:00-2:30pm

Soft skills is a term often associated with a person's "EQ" (Emotional Intelligence Quotient), the cluster of personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, interpersonal skills, managing people, leadership, etc. that characterize relationships with other people.

Other examples of soft skills:
  • Communicating well verbally, as well as non-verbally
  • Making good decisions
  • Adaptability
  • Problem solving
  • Commitment
  • Flexibility
  • Time Management
There are even more, and we’ll touch on a few this Friday, with Shoreline Senior Center volunteer and longtime Roundtable contributor, Ed Cruver.

Do you react when criticized, or calmly consider the criticism? How well do you handle pressure? Do you see things from other’s perspectives?

Ed will cover this and more, and of course we’d love to hear your own examples of soft skills and how best to put them to work. Great coffee and treats, compliments of Central, and always free!

See you this Friday – and as always, Good Luck Out There!

Friday Round Table - readings from career coach Raghav Haran

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

Friday Round Table, Friday, February 5, 1-2:30pm

From Ron Carnell, Program Coordinator, Workforce and Continuing Education, SCC

I don’t remember how it happened, but I ended up on an email list by career coach and “Land the Perfect Job” author, Raghav Haran.

Sure, he has something to sell – you know, the DVDs and all – but he’s been very approachable and helpful,  returning my emails with suggestions and advice.

Interestingly, he never pressures me to buy his program. A very insightful guy with a deeper sense of what this career / job seeking thing is all about.

I sense that he’s a business guy who genuinely enjoys helping people become more secure about job hunting and interviewing.

I have kept most of the emails from Raghav and have asked him if he would not mind that I share a few of them as talking points for Roundtable – his response was very enthusiastically positive. How cool it would be to actually have him in person for a Roundtable!

But maybe this is second best to hosting Raghav in person: What I plan to do this Friday is hopefully get about 10 of you to Roundtable, and hand out different copies of his messages. Emails with titles such as: “Stop Settling on the Big Things in Life,” “What Separates the Top Performers From Everyone Else,” and “Why Won’t Anyone Be Honest With You?” And one of my favorites: “I Dyed My Hair Green and Orange in 4th Grade.”

We’ll read the messages and go around about points made, have a few laughs, get some new insights in the process –  all this of course with the best coffee in Shoreline, compliments of Central Market.

So see you this Friday – and as always, Good Luck Out There!

Friday's Roundtable: Pros and Cons of Working From Home

Tuesday, January 19, 2016

Great chat with Big 5 Sporting Goods recruiter, Krista Brown last Friday! A few of us applied online, and one was offered a close by and flexible position on the spot! We’ll see Krista in May.

This Friday’s Roundtable (1/22): Pros and Cons of Working From Home

Experience in the field (and life with a freelancer) dictates to me that there are more pros than cons. Roundtable participant, and stay-at-home freelance editor, Mary Keils, will be on hand to help get the conversation started.

Lots of info online about this topic, but nothing beats real life experiences. Please come by to share. We’ll talk about researching home based employment, the opportunities in our area, tips on motivation, getting set up, the tax situation, and other topics. All this of course with great coffee and snacks, compliments of Central Market.

Tuesday, January 12, 2016

This Friday’s Roundtable (1/15): Hiring Event: Krista Baker from Big 5 Sporting Goods.

With spring around the corner (yes, it really is!), Big 5 is gearing up for outdoor sports: fishing, biking, canoeing, rafting, camping, etc., Big 5 is one of the country’s biggest retailers for sporting goods and accessories.

Whether you are a career-minded professional looking for management opportunities, a sales or cashiering specialist looking for full time employment, or a student looking for an exciting part time job, Big 5 has an opportunity for you.

Come by and meet Krista Baker who will answer questions about applying and which stores are looking for great customer service and other positions.

Also, let’s take a look at our LinkedIn pages. Are you letting your contacts know what you do? Who you are? What you can bring to the table? Let’s talk about some great examples.

Coming in March: Most of us have been to Trader Joe’s. You have probably noticed that the customer service folks are always friendly and helpful. My guess is employees are treated right, and TJ’s is a fun place to work. Good pay, benefits, the works. Did you know that the Shoreline Trader Joe’s is about to open on 175th near Aurora? The new store’s Captain will be on hand to talk about careers, who they hire, when and why. We don’t yet know which Friday he’ll be by, but when I find out, this will be a sign-up Roundtable. I will keep you posted.

Friday Round Table: The Customized Cover Letter

Monday, December 7, 2015

This Friday, December 11: The Customized Cover Letter

The dreaded cover letter: As if building a carefully worded and detailed resume alone isn’t time consuming and tedious enough, additionally we’re forced to address in a short narrative the reasons why we believe we’re perfect for the position. And even if the process doesn’t require a cover letter, we should try to include one nonetheless.

I’ve seen plenty of letters that seem like they were lifted right off the Internet and don’t address very well the requirements to whatever job position the candidate is applying. Responding to an ad? Before whisking off our resume and letter, we need to make sure we’ve studied the ad to determine how our qualifications match the employer's requirements. Armed with this information, you can craft a cover letter that positions you as the ideal candidate.

There’s a great method afloat and I’ll show you what it’s about!

We’ll go through a near perfect example of a customized cover letter and discover what those who are selected for interviews are doing, what they aren’t, and why. Bring your letter on a thumb drive, or email it to me, and we’ll project a few and go through them.

Also: Please take a couple hours to join us on Friday, December 18 – it’s a Holiday Treats Potluck and Social! I know there are a few connoisseurs of goodie-baking (or just procuring) on these lists, so I’m expecting some holiday sugary greatness.

Got a good job hunting story from this year? Share it at the party!

If you have not yet included social networking as part of your job seeking activities, you absolutely do not want to pass up this Friday’s Round Table!

Did you know?:

  • LinkedIn currently has 300 million users cutting across all professions/industries
  • LinkedIn is built on "chains of trust" and the famous six degrees of separation concept

  • LinkedIn doesn't replace traditional networking methods, it amplifies them
  • LinkedIn requires very little maintenance; it's not something you need to check regularly
  • LinkedIn has dozens of settings allowing you to control your privacy and visibility

Among other topics, Joe will show you how to find who you’re looking for and how to approach them, also how to make yourself more approachable to relevant employers. Friday's Round Table: What's Your Story?

Tuesday, November 3, 2015

What’s your story?

You may have heard someone say, “Everyone has a book in them.” Possibly true, as we have all interfaced with the world in our own unique ways: Hobbies, talents, life experiences, and wisdom, you name it. But maybe you haven’t arrived to a clear picture about how to build a narrative, or story about who you are and what you have to offer.

This Friday (11/6) brings us Patrice Tabor to share the Dependable Strengths Articulation Process (DSAP):

“DSAP is a peer-assisted, group process first developed by Bernard Haldane in 1945. The heart of the process is story telling. DSAP facilitators are trained to elicit the kind of stories that illustrate a person's Dependable Strengths—each person’s special talent for excellence.”

So come on out and zero in on your dependable strengths and how to put it to a story!

Patrice was a guest last November to a full house. For this Friday, it will help if you respond to this email or give a call 206-533-6706 to reserve a spot.

Of course, coffee and light refreshments are on hand for all Roundtables. Just shoot an email back to save your place.
