Friday’s Roundtable: Tips on Reinventing Yourself

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

Friday’s Roundtable: Tips on Reinventing Yourself, with Career Coach and Plus 50 Instructor, Bud Wurtz.

As the years go by, our interests might change. Whether or not intentional, sometimes we might even burn some bridges. These are just a couple of reasons we might arrive to the dawning of self-reinvention.

Reinvention can be starting from scratch, or transferring talents and skills from one chapter of your life to the next. Also, the new world of work, jobs and careers has shifted for sure and will continue to at warped speed! It’s our current reality and one that must be taken very seriously. Both career changers and career educators face this new challenge. New rules, new tools, new approaches are all the order of today.

What’s your story? What are you looking to reach for in 2016? (It’s coming up fast!) Come on by and join the conversation. Perfect coffee weather is predicted for Friday, and it’s always plentiful and free, along with other snacks, all compliments of Central Market.

REMINDER: Paul Valenti will visit us on 10/23 – I like to think of him as our own Roundtable “TED Talk” star. He has a great story about how he came from zero to the Seattle Mayor’s Office. Paul is also a one-person Linkedin info army, and will book you for a one-on-one skills assessment. Save a seat ahead by just emailing Ron Carnell

Friday, October 9, 1:00-2:30pm, Shoreline Community College, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor), SCC Campus Map and Parking info.

Friday Round Table: Best First Impressions and Avoiding the “Seasoned Pro” Stereotype

Monday, September 28, 2015

This Friday (10/2): Best First Impressions and Avoiding the “Seasoned Pro” Stereotype

Everyone knows age discrimination is illegal – but there’s nothing stopping employers from making quiet judgement. After all, no employer is accountable to explain to a candidate why he or she was not hired. And not only do employers sometimes make these judgements face-to-face, they are increasingly looking more closely for clues to your age before they even do a phone screen.

This Friday, we’ll not only cover some ideas in interviewing to maximize success from discrimination, but we’ll also talk about some items on resumĂ©s and cover letters that may reveal your age. The best way to avoid discrimination is to limit an employer’s reasons to discriminate. As always, the high-octane coffee and treats from Central Market will be on hand. Please join us! The group is open to all job seekers.

NEXT MONTH: October has shaped up to be an amazing month for Roundtable: Costco and UPS will be on hand to take resumes. Paul Valenti will be here from Seattle Mayor’s Office (this one will require sign-ups), and I’ll join career coach, William Wurtz to talk about personal reinvention.

Friday Round Table: Bring Your Resume, Get an Interview, Get Placed

Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Terra Staffing employment specialist and recruiter, Sue Putnam will join the conversation at Shoreline Community College Job Seekers' Round Table with details about Terra, what you might expect during a placement interview, and who’s hiring.

Please bring that resume we polished up last week (or for those who did not attend, your most recent resume) and meet Sue. This is a great opportunity to get placed!
Coffee and snacks, compliments of Central Market were a hit last week. Maybe a sure sign of hot beverage season closing in.

Friday Round Table: The Engaging Resumé

Monday, September 14, 2015

This Friday (9/18): The Engaging Resume

We have talked a lot about style and grammar, tenses punctuation, etc. We’ve also talked about the non-human methods of reviewing resumes, Applicant Tracking Systems. This week we’ll hit on how thinking of your resume is more an advertisement for you, simplifying information, and trying on for size some drills in “sound biting.” Also: editing, editing, editing. Refining the art of Less is More!

There will of course be plenty of time for other questions regarding interviewing, cover letters, and what’s coming up between now and the end of the year. As always, great coffee from Central Market, with dunking treats.

Friday, September 18, 1:00-2:30pm, Shoreline Community College, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor).  SCC Campus Map and Parking Info. All job seekers are welcome.

Coming up

We’re busy getting resumes tight for upcoming recruiters and other job possibilities. On board in the near future for Round Table: 9/25 will bring us Sue Putnam from Terra Staffing, and next month, we’ll have a recruiter from Costco letting us know about the ins and outs on landing a good paying job there. We’re heading to the seasonal employment phase of the year, and these opportunities sometimes turn into permanent positions. Be ready!

Also coming in October: Paul Valenti from Seattle Mayor’s Office for Senior Citizens. A dynamic, entertaining speaker, Paul will share his story of how he went from literally Zero, to working as a Hawaiian legislator, and later, one of Seattle’s most connected job connections for older workers. Keep Friday, 10/23 open for Paul, this one is reservation sign-ups only!

Friday Round Table: Resumé editing and Goal setting

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

This Friday (9/11): Resumé Editing Idea and the Importance of Goal Setting for Your Job Search

It’s been said that goals are just dreams with deadlines. Setting a goal is how we approach bringing something that was mysterious or not all that visible more into focus.

VISUALIZATION WORKS. One way of doing this: Before he became a much in demand actor, Jim Carrey, even as he was routinely turned down after auditions, was in the habit of writing himself multimillion dollar checks as “payment” for the parts he visualized he would one day be offered. And when he was turned down, he spent more time trying to figure out what was wrong with the people who passed him up, rather than what was wrong with him!

This week we’ll talk about goals, what makes them work, how they fail. Part of the purpose of this meeting is a ramp up to next week’s Round Table on engaging resumĂ©s - so please, along with discussion on how to put goals into motion, let’s touch on resumĂ©s. Please bring yours for a quick scan and editing ideas! Please come have some coffee, tea, and other treats and share with everyone what setting goals means for you, what has worked, what hasn’t.

All job seekers are welcome.

Thursday’s Round Table (8/27): "Tell Me About Yourself"

Monday, August 24, 2015

Thursday’s Round Table (8/27): Exploring the Most Dreaded Interview Question: "Tell Me About Yourself"

So you got the call: You’ve been asked to interview!

It can be a feeling of excitement, even relief, but sometimes accompanied with a bit of anxiety.

What many of us don’t consider is that the interview is more a conversation than it is a test. How do we get past the edginess and jitters of a looming job interview?

Being prepared is a given, but being yourself is an imperative! This Thursday we’ll give this subject some airtime. If you haven’t yet, you will get an interview eventually, so you might as well come by, right? So please share some skills and insights, have some laughs – and of course some great coffee and refreshments.

Thursday, August 27, 1:00-2:30pm

Thursday's Round Table: Applicant Tracking Software and How Resumes Are Sorted

Monday, July 13, 2015

Do employers see you
the way you see yourself?
Today’s job seekers need to spend the time to make sure that our professional resumes can get by the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), which is the software that reads your resume and ranks it according to keywords.

Today about 65% of medium to large companies are now using Applicant Tracking Systems and this has created a nightmare for job seekers.

In fact, a recent study indicated that about 75% of qualified job seekers are being eliminated because they do not know the rules.

This Thursday we'll share some of the do’s and don'ts with the usual treats and beverages. Bring your resume on a thumb drive, as we’ll broach other topics to do with resumes.

Thursday, July 16, 1:00-2:30pm

Shoreline Community College, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor), SCC Campus Map and Parking information,

The Round Table is aimed at older workers returning to the work force, but is open to anyone who is in the job search process, both students and community members. Sessions are free.

Thursday Round Table: Best Resume Formatting

Tuesday, July 7, 2015

Round Table This Thursday (7/9): Best Resume Formatting: How and Why

Nobody can ever underestimate how important it is to have a good resume. First impressions count, and the first impression that a potential employer will have of you, is going to depend on how you present your resume. This is going to be your one and only chance to capture a potential employer’s attention, or for your resume to be tossed into the file of those they don't want to pursue. And this is where resume formatting becomes exceptionally important.

So what makes a well-formatted resume stand out? In a nutshell, not so much the minutia of every job you've held over the past 10 or so years, but the precision and readability of your work history. Get rid of the fluff, or "resume padding." Proof for correct grammar. Make good use of white space. All this will be covered and more.

See you this Thursday! Please bring your resume and share some tips over ice tea and other treats compliments of Central Market. 1-2:30pm.

Thursday Round Table: Best Cover Letters: How and Why

Monday, June 22, 2015

Job Seeker's Round Table: Thursday, June 25, 1:00-2:30pm

When you find a job you'd like to apply for, how do you approach writing your cover letter? If you're like most people, it’s with a groan of apprehension rather than a skip and a hop up of elation. You don't have to be a wordsmith to write a great cover letter. You just need to understand what the employer is seeking to accomplish in hiring this position.

Please join us as we discuss, show off, and strategize cover letters. Along for the ride will be my guest, Mary Keils to offer her experiences.

We'll of course have coffee and treats on hand, compliments of Central Market. Have a friend or family member looking for work? Please bring them along!

Thursday Round Table: Dressing for Summer Interview Success

Monday, June 15, 2015

This Thursday (6/18): Dressing for Summer Interview Success, with Myriam Mampengu

A fun one to kick off summer: When we think of job interview preparation, a common rule of thumb is to investigate the dress code of the potential workplace, and dress equal or just a notch above those doing the interviewing.

However, the workplace culture of the Pacific Northwest has been described as unique from the rest of the country (especially in summer!), not only with attire, but also expression, diversity, use of office space, breaks, and employee interaction, to name just a few.

Myriam Mampengu, Employment Specialist, Goodwill of Puget Sound, will share insights to how workplaces have evolved in these areas, and what to consider on how to assimilate with younger workers. Please join us for some coffee, iced tea and discussion as we consider Pacific Northwest workplace culture.

Round Table Friday: Answers to Tough Interview Questions

Monday, June 8, 2015

Friday, June 12, 1pm to 2:30pm, Shoreline Community College

Everyone knows that not all interview questions are created equally, and some are more challenging to answer than others.

However, most hiring managers are not out to stump or trick candidates in their interview questions. Rather, the majority of interviewers approach the process as an opportunity to gain the information they need to evaluate if a candidate is the right match – not only with the job description, but for with office culture and the many personalities already on board.

Got an interview coming up? Got advice for someone who does?

Join us with Round Table contributor, Ed Cruver as we strategize on best answers for hard questions. We'll talk about preparation, relaxation techniques, and how to make the best of what is often an anxiety-inducing conversation. Coffee, ice tea, cookies, the usual.

This is the last Friday for Round Table throughout the summer. Beginning next week Round Table will take place on Thursdays, same time, same place. We will resume the meetings for Fridays on September 25.

Friday’s Job Seekers’ Round Table: Assessing Transferable Skills

Monday, June 1, 2015

Friday’s Job Seekers’ Round Table June 5: Assessing Transferable Skills

Transferable skills are those you have acquired during any activity in your life -- jobs, classes, projects, parenting, hobbies, sports, virtually anything -- that are transferable and applicable to what you want to do in your next job.

For example, almost every resumĂ© includes the bulleted item “strong communication skills.” But what exactly does that mean? Forms and styles of written communication? Great storyteller? Conveying a positive and likable self-image?

We often fall into the trap of describing ourselves as a job title, rather than who we really are, and what inspires or motivates us. The fact is, the skills we’ve learned from a lifetime of “you do this, I give you a check,” are just a tiny fraction of everything that makes each one of us unique.

Let’s talk about how we might assign our skills to a broader variety of jobs and careers.

As per the usual: Strong coffee, sweet treats, all compliments of Central Market.

Friday's Round Table: Deciding What You Want in a Job or Career

Tuesday, May 5, 2015

“The most interesting and thoughtful over-50 people I have met are those who still have no idea what they want to do.”
            -Unknown
Job Seekers' Round Table, Friday, May 8, SCC

When we were young and plotting our career paths and personal lives, most of us thought very little of the day we might have to reinvent ourselves. This is approached with maybe some deeper digging than we could have ever thought necessary. For this deeper career excavation, we need to identify personal meaning and pleasure indicators and how they intersect with our strongest skills.

Please join us this Friday (5/8) and share your experiences on this subject. We'll talk about six basic pathways suggested by career coach, Cheryl Simpson.

Settled on a job choice? As always, the floor is open for sharing how you found your path, along with the ups and downs of your job search and strategies; all with the usual delicious coffee, snacks, and networking.

Job Seekers' Round Table, Friday, May 8, 1:00-2:30pm, Shoreline Community College, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor) SCC Campus Map, Parking information.

Open to anyone of any age who is job seeking or interested in career change.

Job Seekers' Round Table: working around ageism and how to put age in your favor

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

You've heard it before: “But age discrimination is against the law!”

It sure is. But employers still do it. And they can be pretty crafty. Another side to this is: Someone hired with just five years left before retiring, is more likely than a new 20 or 30-something hire to stay with the same employer for that amount of time. This is just one of the many positives for older job searchers.

Please join us this Friday, May 1, as Edmonds Senior Center Director, Farrell Fleming joins Ron Carnell with a discussion on the realities of ageism in the job search, and how we can put aspects of age in our favor. Farrell and Ron will share strategies on detecting employer age profiling, the types of methods often used to reveal age, and how to counter them. This is Ron's third ageism workshop over the past couple years, and the discussions and stories are always intriguing and informative. Last time we featured this topic, it filled up fast!

So please respond to save yourself a place at the “Round Table.” As always, great coffee and treats, compliments of Central Market will be on hand.

Job Seekers' Round Table: Dealing with Difficult Discussions

Thursday, April 23, 2015

Interviewing for work is a tough business. Some of the pitfalls for not winning over the selection panel or HR reps are real, while others may be our imagination getting the best of us.

We have to ask good questions based on what we know about the workplace, and meet their questions with concise and thoughtful answers.

All the while remembering to curb enthusiasm, anxiety, and to never appear too hungry.

This Friday (4/24) brings us author, Compassionate Communication Trainer, and life coach, Moreah Vestan discussing Dealing with Difficult Discussions. Among the workshop topics we'll learn to apply to interviewing:

  • How to connect at interviews or when you fill out an application
  • How to deal with disappointment and frustration over job hunting
  • How to manage difficult interactions with family, friends, at work, etc.

Moreah brings 11 years’ experience in communication training, and has much wisdom to share about maximizing your impact at the interview. There are also tips on choosing how to react, which benefits not only the interview process, but every area of your job search.

Not to be missed! Also the usual great coffee and other delights, compliments of Central Market.

Friday, April 24, 1:00-2:30pm, Shoreline Community College, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor). SCC Campus Map and Parking information.

The group is organized by Ron Carnell. The focus is students over 50, but it is open to all who are looking for work or seeking to re-enter the job force.
