Friday Job Seekers Round Table: How to make new contacts

Monday, April 13, 2015

How to Make New Contacts Without the Pressure of Networking

Various tests abound on the internet that can place us into extrovert / introvert-based categories. Maybe you’ve taken a Myers Briggs or one of the many others.

Some of us are quite social and fun, we just need to be more selective. Others can chat at a party just fine, but aren’t too big on small talk.

And there are still some of us get waves of anxiety by the mere thought of networking, which sounds to us like meaningless glad handing, with all involved pretending that there’s no personal agendas. Some of us don’t want to show for networking events for risk of being rejected, or feeling like we don’t have anything new or interesting to say.

What if you could make connections for volunteering or learning about job opportunities, in person, and without all the “salesy” job search baggage?

This Friday, April 17, 1-2:30pm, Ron Carnell will lead the discussion about how to make new contacts without the assumptions or pressures of an agenda. We'll share resources about how to get connected more casually. All this over the usual great coffee and treats, compliments of Central Market.

All job seekers are welcome to attend. Sessions are free.

Job Seekers' Round Table: How to deal with 'No'

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

Job Seekers' Round Table, Friday, April 10, 1:00-2:30pm, at Shoreline Community College, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor). SCC Campus Map. Parking info.

How to Deal with “NO:” Moving On From Rejection

Day after day, week after week, even months can go by with another long period of responding to job announcements and getting nothing back. We have all been there. There were moments during my intensive job search, days where I actually hoped for any kind of response from my emailed or uploaded resumes and cover letters – just to see if anyone as much as noticed them!

Feeling isolated? Feeling invisible? This Friday we’ll talk about how to overcome being told “No.” Or even worse, ignored entirely. Hard as it might sound, the key for success is to stay positive to avoid becoming temporarily depressed.

Remember: It really is a game of time and numbers – we’re all going to be employed sooner or later. So in the meantime, let’s talk about how to keep a cool head and a productive job search schedule. We'll even go over a bullet list of objectives to accomplish, provided by Shoreline career and academic advisor, Gwyn Hoffman-Robinson. As always, great coffee and tasty morsels are on hand, compliments of Central Market.

All are welcome to attend. Older workers and community members are included, as well as college students.

Job seekers' Friday Round Table: nonverbal communication in interviews

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Diana Knauf, SCC
Professor of Psychology
This Friday, April 3, 2015, the Job Seekers' Round Table will hear about Interviewing: Nonverbal Communication, with SCC Professor of Psychology, Diana Knauf.
The content of what you say in response to questions (and the content of questions you ask) is obviously exceedingly important in a job interview.

What is less well known is the importance of the part of the interview that isn't spoken -- the way you present yourself and behave nonverbally.

Please join us for tips on “selling your brand in silence,” with our own Diana Knauf, SCC Professor of Psychology.

As always top notch coffee and treats, courtesy of Central Market.

Friday, April 3, 1:00-2:30pm, Shoreline Community College, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor). SCC Campus Map and Parking information.

The sessions are open to the job-seeking public, as well as students.

Job seekers Round Table Friday - how to get attention with your resumé

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

“The most precious piece of real estate in your entire resumé is the top of the first page. At first glance, this is the area that is going to get the most attention from a prospective employer.
And there are some things you can do to make that most of that – or get your resumé tossed in the “not interested” pile.”
-----Mary Elizabeth Bradford

"I couldn’t agree more with Mary", says Ron Carnell, organizer of the Friday Round Tables.

"Please bring your resumé along this Friday, March 20, and we’ll go over how to beef up your Opening Statement. Or your Summary. Or your Objective.

"You know, that first paragraph-thing that entices the employer, or HR person to keep reading the rest of your resumé."

Great conversation and networking opportunities (along with quality coffee and snacks, compliments of Central Market) await you!

Friday, March 20, 1:00-2:30pm, Shoreline Community College, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor). SCC Campus Map. Parking.

Job Seekers Round Table - hold on to your confidence

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

The Job Seekers Round Table meets this Friday, March 13, from 1-2:30pm, at Shoreline Community College, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor). SCC Campus Map. Parking info.

Okay, we all experience doubts. And rightly so, it’s all part of how we sort things out for ourselves - BUT: We also need to get the balance correct between inner doubt and inner confidence.

Our inner voice can be the voice of inspiration, courage and support. It can revolutionize our lives into a vital, glowing, growing triumph.

Successful people possess inner confidence. They hear this supportive voice egging them on to success even whilst the inner doubt tries to raise its voice and tell you can't achieve it.

Join us this Friday with Back to Work Now! career specialist, Marsha Major, as she shares ideas on getting in touch with your value (what makes you a stand out among everyone else) and regaining and holding onto your confidence.

As always, great coffee and snacks, compliments of Central Market, will accompany the work.

Great conversation and networking opportunities await you!

Job Seekers' Round Table: 3 sneaky ways to research a company

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

The Job Seekers' Round Table is held every Friday from 1-2:30pm at Shoreline Community College, Room 5116 (Computer lab). Maps

Anyone in the job search is welcome, including community members.

This Friday, February 13, Ron Carnell, Plus 50 Coordinator and Roundtable Host will discuss 3 SNEAKY WAYS TO RESEARCH A COMPANY.

One of the most dreaded questions in a job interview is:
“So, what is it about us that drew you to our company?”
And we all know at least a couple of things to definitely not offer up when this question arises, such as: “I saw that you were hiring and I really need the job.”
Or “You offer great benefits.”

Employers want to know the background and reasons for your  passion. They want to know how much you know about the company, possibly even some things about the good works of their higher office holders within the company. But it can’t come off as canned, or sounding like you memorized something off the Internet. The more genuine your homework about the company sounds to the interviewers, the better they’ll see you as a fit for their company.

Please join us this Friday for “3 Sneaky Ways to Research a Company.” We’ll go over the usual, not-so-sneaky steps too, along with taking a look at Glass Door and Indeed. And of course share other job search tips and networking advice over the usual delicious coffee and snacks.

Meetings are free, Coffee and Cookies provided. There is free parking just off campus on Innis Arden Way. For now, on campus parking is metered.
