Smile for the camera… unemployed job seekers got free headshots

Tuesday, July 28, 2020

This job applicant is going thru a difficult time
with change in marital status as well as
relocation to a new community

Story and photos
by Cynthia Sheridan

Jeremy Stubson of Bothell is looking for a job in Health Care Operations and Sales.

He saved over $300 by getting a free headshot at the Alderwood Mall last Wednesday, July 22, 2020.

And he’s not the only one. In the first hour of this one-day event, over 30 people showed up for the opportunity to improve their resume.

Five local photographers gathered at Alderwood Mall and set up a ton of equipment for a busy day taking free headshots.

Results were sent to the jobseeker’s cell phone within an hour.

Headshot Booker, which organized the project, was aiming for 10,000 photo shoots across the nation in a single day and Brookfield Real Estate, the second largest mall owner in the US, helped to make that happen.

Jeremy checks in wearing a handsome suit
jacket and tie ..the camera won’t
see his jeans, he mentioned (a bit sheepishly).

The goal of the national head shoot was to help unemployed workers improve their job resumes at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic is reducing employment opportunities.

Another goal was to support and advertise the skills of independent photographers who are also lagging in business.

Headshot Booker is the premier agency committed to uniting corporations with accredited headshot photographers around the globe.

Employment Security Commissioner: “We’ll work night and day until everyone receives their benefits”

Friday, May 1, 2020

Employment Security Department
Commissioner Suzi LeVine

During the week of April 19-25, there were 1,455,908 total claims for unemployment benefits filed by Washingtonians for unemployment benefits, according to the Employment Security Department (ESD).

In addition, during the week of April 19-25, ESD paid out over $988 million (an increase of $811.2 million from the previous week) to a total of 504,407 claims (an increase of 151,498 from the previous week).

An individual can file more than one claim, so the number of claims does not equate to individuals.

Since the week ending March 7 when COVID-19 job losses began:
  • A total of 787,533 distinct individuals have filed for unemployment insurance
  • ESD has paid out nearly $1.5 billion in benefits to Washingtonians to more than 500,000 Washingtonians

Employment Security Department Commissioner Suzi LeVine released this statement Thursday about Washingtonians awaiting unemployment benefits:

“While the team at the Employment Security Department has helped hundreds of thousands of people get unemployment benefits since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, we know that there are still many who are awaiting their payments. It is beyond frustrating for these individuals and we will continue to work night and day until everyone receives their benefits.

“Unfortunately, resolving these issues takes both people and time. Claims may be pending for a number of reasons, the most common of which is a discrepancy between the information the employee entered when applying for unemployment, and the information reported to us by their employer. In order to make sure the customer is eligible for benefits, and to ensure due process for both the employee and employer, these cases need to be adjudicated.

“Under normal circumstances, cases are adjudicated within 21 days. That means additional information is requested and reviewed by a trained adjudicator and a decision is made in about three weeks. However, right now is anything but normal.

"We’ve had more claims in the past 7 weeks than we had in the prior 3.5 years combined! The work of an adjudicator requires specialized training and additional skill development in order to make sure these cases are fairly and accurately processed, and it takes time to staff up this team. In the meantime, we know that people continue to wait for an answer.

“It is our agency’s number one priority to get benefits to those people who are eligible for some form of unemployment assistance and who are still waiting. These are the four things we’re doing right now to address this issue:
  1. Getting people who are eligible to be paid to take action. Tens of thousands of people have not filed their weekly claim, or do not know they are should apply for expanded unemployment benefits under the federal CARES Act. Targeted emails will remind them to take these important steps.
  2. Reaching out to those in adjudication for various reasons and updating them on the work we are doing to resolve their situation.
  3. Bulk-clearing certain issues when we can. For example, people who noted that they are a student as well as an employee, typically must show that they have enough hours in their week outside of school available to work. With most schools cancelled, this is an issue we have been able bulk-clear from many applicants, speeding up the process for many of those folks to be paid.
  4. Bringing on more customer service staff to both help people across the state process their claims and get through on the phones and free up our adjudicators to do the specialized work of resolving claims issues. We’ve more than tripled our claims staff and we continue to hire, so please go to esd.wa.gov/esdjobs to see current postings.

“We know people are struggling all across the state and many are in desperate situations. These are our friends, neighbors and families. I am so sorry that we haven’t been able to provide everyone with relief when they need it and we will continue to work hard to eliminate this backlog and get money to all those who are eligible as quickly as possible.”

Commissioner LeVine also shared a video about this topic on Wednesday.

Friday Roundtable: Start a Home-Based Business

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

This Friday’s Roundtable: Start a Home-Based Business

Featured Guest: Annie’s Walk and Talk Founder, Ann Conklin

Friday, April 21, 2017, 1:00-2:30pm Shoreline Community College, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Bldg 9000, Room 9202.

Just give a call to save a place: 206-533-6706

Ann Conklin:

“After attending several of Ron’s Roundtable sessions, I met Tiffany McVeety, who was a guest speaker and teaches entrepreneurship at SSC. My sister and I spent nine months on a novel idea and took all of the steps necessary to start a business and a full-fledged business plan.

"Though I shelved the idea in October of 2014, the process enabled me to start Annie's Walk and Talk that December. Simply dog walking and pet sitting. I knew I needed another stream of income that was dog oriented and something of consequence that I believed in.

"In March of 2015, I found the perfect company to help fulfill my wishes. Using a direct sales model, PawTree offers a customized nutrition program that utilizes an algorithm to identify the best food/dry kibble and supplements for your dog’s needs.”

Not too long ago, Ann told me she sometimes has more business than she can handle and has in the process networked for other great ideas. Come by and hear her success and even the failure or two that lead up to her awesome idea!

And as always – Good Luck Out There!

Friday Roundtable: Get places with Terra Staffing

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

Terra Staffing employment specialist and recruiter, Sarah Hoffman will join the conversation at Shoreline Community College Job Seekers' Roundtable with details about Terra, what you might expect during a placement interview, and who’s hiring.

Word is that office staffing companies are at the very least even with requests for workers, and numbers of workers to be hired. So it’s a strong possibility that if you need something fast in the temp or temp-to-perm sphere, Terra could be your last stop.

Bring your resume! (If you bring it on a thumb drive, I’ll project it for tips and takeaways.)

This is a great opportunity to get placed quickly!

Roundtable Friday with Elizabeth Goodnow from Accountemps

Wednesday, January 25, 2017

Roundtable is back for 2017

Are you ready to get a paycheck? Is it a temporary job you have in mind – that is, just something to make do until the dream job arrives -- or is it something more permanent in an office setting?

Either way, if you stop by Roundtable this Friday, your chances of becoming employed very soon will increase dramatically.

Below is an excerpt from a very nice card I once received from Roundtable participant, Kathy Tiedman:

“My contact with your speaker from Accountemps facilitated contact with a recruiter at Robert Half and ultimately led to my placement in a long term, temporary position.”

Kathy went on to say that the experience boosted her confidence and has added some attractive cache to her resume.
And wouldn’t you know it, Elizabeth Goodnow from Accountemps / Robert Half Agency is our featured guest for this Friday!
Please come by, bring your resume and business card, and arrange for a one-on-one with Elizabeth.

She and the folks at Accountemps have been awesome over the past couple years and have landed many Roundtablers much needed employment.

We’ll of course have coffee and treats on hand, compliments of Central Market. Have a friend or family member looking for work? Please bring them along.

See you this Friday – and as always, Good Luck Out There!
