Island Jazz Quintet at Third Place Commons Friday

Thursday, December 27, 2012

Island Jazz Quintet

No one ever called Vashon Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, a hotbed of innovative jazz—no one, that is, except Island Jazz Quintet (IJQ).

Meeting and growing in a place that is the antithesis of bright lights and glamour gave the band a chance to develop its style in peace. That style combines improvisational jazz, bossa nova, and a smoky hint of cabaret in distinctive arrangements that lead Victory Review to note,

“Vashon Island boasts a group worthy of national attention. This group would be right at home in a New York cabaret."

In the beginning, jam sessions in a cabin in the woods led quickly to regular gigs and a desire to record. The band released its first album in 2001, a self-titled collection garnering local airplay and critical notice:

"In these guys you have a fine instrumental quartet…They can swing with the best and seem especially influenced by the California cool sound of Chet Baker. Their rendition of the classic number, "Bernie'sTune" is a knockout. But that's not all. They have a dynamite vocalist as well. Singer Maggie Laird is a real find…Her take on "One For My Baby" is near perfect."
-Lars Ghandil, Victory Review

Shorewood grad forms Seattle band in New York

Friday, November 23, 2012

Emily Asher’s Garden Party brings the flavor of New York’s fashionable vintage music culture to Seattle for the holidays.

Emily Asher’s Garden Party is receiving high acclaim in New York City, New Jersey, Boston and other East Coast cities, but Seattle is at the heart of the band.

Led by Shorewood and UW grad Emily Asher on trombone and vocals, the Seattle core of the band found each other through the community of young traditional jazz players in New York. Jay Lepley , drummer, and Mike Davis, trumpeter grew up just blocks from each other on Queen Anne, yet they didn’t meet until playing on a New York bandstand. Asher was Davis’ beginning improvisation teacher at Burton Music Camp over ten years ago when Davis was only eleven years old. Davis and Asher reconnected at a late night jam session in Manhattan’s East Village. The band also includes Seattle native Michael Glynn now living in Palo Alto, CA.

Emily Asher’s Garden Party will be performing four public dates in the Seattle area December 16-22, 2012:
  • Sunday, Dec 16. The Century Ballroom 915 E. Pine St 9pm-midnight $15 All Ages
  • Monday, Dec 17. Tula’s Jazz Club 2214 2nd Ave 7:30-11:30pm $15/$8 students. All Ages until 10pm
  • Tuesday, Dec 18. Boxley’s 101 W. North Bend Way. North Bend, WA 7-9pm
  • Wednesday, Dec 19. The Royal Room 5000 Rainier Ave South 7:30pm All Ages until 10pm
  • Saturday, Dec 22. The Conway Muse 18444 Spruce St, Conway, WA 7-10pm $15 All Ages

More on Gary Smulyan

Gifted multi-instrumentalist Gary Smulyan started his music career by first learning alto saxophone during his teenage years on Long Island. Today he is critically acclaimed across the board and recognized as the major voice on the baritone saxophone. His playing is marked by an aggressive rhythmic sense, an intelligent and creative harmonic approach, and, perhaps most importantly, a strong and incisive wit.

Gradually establishing himself, the talented Smulyan was asked to share the stage and the recording studio with a stunning potpourri of luminaries, including trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Dizzy Gillespie, saxophonist Stan Getz, pianist Chick Corea, timbales king Tito Puente, and R&B/Blues and soul icons Ray Charles, B.B. King and Diana Ross.
  • Voted Baritone Saxophonist of the Year in the 2011 Downbeat Critics Poll.
  • Winner of the 2011 Jazz Times Readers and Critics Polls for Baritone Saxophonist of the year.
  • Gary's new CD, "Smul's Paradise", will be released in early 2012 on the Capri label, featuring Mike LeDonne (organ), Peter Bernstein (guitar), and Kenny Washington (drums).

Jazz Great Diane Schuur takes the stage at Northshore PAC

Sunday, October 30, 2011

Diane Schuur, Jazz great
plays at Northshore PAC
Two-time Grammy Award winner and one of contemporary jazz's leading vocalist/pianists, Diane Schuur brings her distinctive jazz styling to the Northshore Performing Arts Center (18125 92nd Ave. NE, Bothell). Schuur and her band will perform in concert Saturday, November 12 at 7:30 PM.

A longtime disciple of Dinah Washington and other legendary jazz singers of the '40s and '50s, Schuur has built a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents' generation, but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and '60s. Born in Tacoma, Washington, in December 1953, Schuur grew up in nearby Auburn, Washington, where her father was a police captain. Nicknamed Deedles at a young age, Schuur discovered the world of jazz via her father, a piano player, and her mother, who kept a formidable collection of Duke Ellington and Dinah Washington records in the house.

In a recording career that spans nearly three decades - and includes two Grammy Awards and three Grammy nominations - Schuur's music has explored nearly every corner of the 20th century American musical landscape. In her latest CD release The Gathering, Schuur turns a corner into a brand new lane, infusing her jazz sensibilities into ten country-brewed tunes from such seminal songwriters as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Cochran, Kris Kristofferson, Roger Miller and others.

Ticket prices for this special event are Adults/$45, Seniors/$40, and Youth under 17 yrs/$25. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling 425-984-2471.
